“Hahahahaha!” Ryan's laughter echoed through the kitchen. For a while, he kept laughing then he stopped.

“You and I know you aren't going anywhere, love. Now fix my food before I come out!” He sneered, his voice dulled to a sinister whisper.

Melinda's tears fell like rain, her head throbbing with excruciating pain, and her body trembling as she sobbed.

She needed to calm herself down and figure out what to make for Ryan, but her tears seemed to have a will of their own, controlling her every move.

Six years of marriage with Ryan had conditioned her to believe she was nothing without him. He ripped her of all her self-worth and confidence with his consistent cruelty and vile words and she grew to believe him.

She was tired of it all and what gave her the strength to somehow believe she could leave him, was the fire that ignited within her every passing day. Her feelings for Ethan, her billionaire boss.

Gathering her strength, she cooked chicken sauce and mashed potatoes from leftovers in the fridge.

The house fell silent as Ryan closed the parlor door behind him. Melinda breathed a sigh of relief, picked up her bag from the parlor, and slowly walked to their bedroom, tears running down her cheeks.

With each step, the weight of her harsh life pierced her heart. She gave Ryan everything. His job at Brookslake Care Facility was a result of her connections, she gave him a comfortable life, funded by her hard work.

In return, all she received from him was wickedness, abuse, and contempt.

As she pushed open the bedroom door, an unfamiliar smell enveloped her. A perfume with a soft scent typically worn by women. Her heart skipped, her mind swirling with many questions as she quickly scanned the room.

She knew it wasn't hers and she always bought Ryan's perfume so it wasn't his, she thought. A wave of anger and betrayal engulfed her. Did this asshole bring a woman into my house?! She pondered.

“No, no, no" she whispered to herself. "He wouldn't dare" she continued.

The seed of doubt was already planted and Melinda couldn't shake the feeling that something was amiss but she was too tired and emotionally drained to think about it so she took a deep breath and reassured herself it was nothing.

She made her way to the bathroom, her nose still bleeding and with a swollen face. She showered, took painkillers, and applied her soothing face cream before returning to her room to sleep off.

——

As Melinda entered Ethan’s office to drop some files for him, Ethan’s sharp gaze made her heart skip. He knew, she said to herself.

“Take those glasses off. He touched you again didn't he?!” Ethan snarled, his voice filled with anger and disdain for Ryan.

Ethan Blackwood was the CEO of the biggest bank in America, Blackwood.Co bank, where Melinda worked.

Due to her exceptional talents, she was transferred from their sub-branch in Midtown Atlanta three months ago to the headquarters in Downtown Atlanta where she worked closely with Ethan, her boss.

Melinda paused, confused about how to respond. She didn't want to lie to Ethan but she was too embarrassed to tell the truth.

“I’m fine, it’s nothing” Melinda replied, her tone casual to minimize the situation.

“Why do you keep defending this jerk?! He treats you like shit and somehow you always find a way to defend him!” Ethan said, his expression twisted in disbelief and frustration.

A few weeks ago, Ethan found Melinda in her office, her body trembling as she cried, trying to hold back the humiliation caused by her husband’s brutal hands.

Ethan offered to press charges but Melinda blatantly refused, her eyes begging him to understand. “If you do it, I’ll quit, “ she said, her voice filled with fear.

Now, Ryan struck her again and he was engulfed with helpless rage, unable to do anything but ask her why she had to put up with it.

“Why are you still with him, Melinda?” Ethan continued, his tone now softer.

Melinda’s eyes began to betray her as tears struggled to drop. Her heart raced, no one had ever asked her that question before. She looked at Ethan and they stared at each other for a brief moment, the tension between them so thick you could cut a knife through it.

“Sir, Lila sends for you…” Katherine, Mrs Lila’s assistant interrupted as she opened the office door of Ethan.

“Ok, I’ll be there shortly,” Ethan nodded, his gaze still on Melinda.

“This discussion isn't finished. Go back to work. When I’m done with my sister, I’ll come see you.”Ethan continued as he walked out from his office, Melinda behind him.

As Melinda and Ethan worked out, there was Lila, her heels echoing on the marble floor as she walked through the corridor.

Mrs. Lila Blackwood, the senior sister and only sibling to Ethan Blackwood was a formidable force. She was a 45-year-old tall woman with a sharp psychic that gave off an intimidating aura. She had taken on the maternal role of the family since their mother died years ago.

She was known for her ruthless nature, always ready to defend her family’s legacy no matter the cost.

“That woman is beginning to get on my nerves! Her little charade online is going too far. Why isn't she in prison huh?!” Mrs Lila hissed, her heels slammed on the marble floor as she stopped and stared at Ethan.

“She was released on bail, but the investigation is still active. The police aren't going to let this go easily, I made sure of that.” Ethan said firmly as they both walked off.

Melinda practically sprinted to keep up their pace, her shorter legs working hard to match their pace. As they approached the elevator, Lila turned to Melinda, her eyes full of rage.

“Melinda, you fix this! Because I promise if I see that woman again in this building, I'll rip her head off with my bare hands!”

“I will ma’am. Working on it” Melinda nodded. As the elevator door was closing, Melinda’s eyes met Ethan’s and a jolt of electricity rushed through her.

His gaze was warm and gentle and for a brief moment, she could sense a genuine raw connection in his eyes. She felt seen…

As she walked back to her office, she couldn't shake the feeling that he might feel the same way she felt for him. Or did he just feel sorry for her? She wondered.

Melinda, you're still very much married, don't forget that! She scolded herself.

____

Melinda looked at her wristwatch as she readied herself to go home as it was closing hours, and then her phone rang.

“Are you ready? I’m taking you home” Ethan said as she picked up the call.

Melinda’s heart skipped a beat.

Ethan can’t take me home! What if Ryan’s back? He can't see me with Ethan! Melinda thought, her heart racing as she froze. The room fell silent…

“Hello? Are you still there?” Ethan’s voice broke the silence. Melinda’s heart skipped a beat as she snapped back to reality. “Um, yes boss, sorry. You don't have to worry, I'll find my way, I don't want to impose” she muttered, her voice barely a whisper. “Who said you were imposing?” Ethan replied, this time, firm and cold. “I'll be in your office in fifteen minutes, be ready,” he continued and immediately hung up, leaving Melinda disoriented and anxious. Her thoughts swirled as she walked towards her office ceiling-long glass window, the warm evening sun creating a shiny glow on her face. As she looked out, she couldn't help but sense a surge of excitement at the thought of sitting next to Ethan in his car, alone with him, but her logical side warned her of the possibility of Ryan being home to witness Ethan dropping her off. Ryan’s temper was unpredictable and he overreacted to everything. If he saw Ethan, he may misinterpret their innocent encounter and beat her up, she

A woman working in the reception center quickly approached Ryan, her voice firm. “Sir, you need to leave. That's what you guys do here right?! Fucking people’s wives!” he continued. The receptionist hurried to her desk, her fingers racing over the phone keypad. “Security! We need you here immediately!” she said. The hall erupted into a frenzy. People began to whisper to themselves, their eyes wide with intrigue. Some pulled out their phones and began capturing the chaos unfolding. “Ryan, stop this, please! Why are you embarrassing me!” Melinda snapped, her face flushed with humiliation. “You be quiet! Shameless woman. Now I see why they gave you a promotion!” he sneered. Melinda tried again to pull her hands away but Ryan’s grip only tightened.

Melinda’s eyes slowly opened, but the bright light forced her eyelids to close back up once more. The faint sounds of voices and beeping machines swirled around her, making her head spin. As she drifted in and out of consciousness, she sensed her body being moved, the sensation of chaos surrounding her. She managed to open her eyes again, and the light felt softer and she noticed she was in a hospital bed. An IV drip fed into her arm, and machines beeped quietly beside her. Panic gripped her as she struggled to remember how she got there. On scanning the room, her gaze landed on Ethan’s PA who was sitting next to her, her focus on her phone. The PA looked up, relief evident on her face, and she quickly dialed a number on her phone. “She’s awake, Sir,” she said into the phone. Turning to Melinda, she gently uttered, “Ma’am, please hold on, let me call the doctor.” A few minutes later, the PA returned with a tall, young doctor in a lab coat and a stethoscope around his neck.

Amelia Reed was the sister to Lila’s husband, Robert. Both families had long envisioned her marriage with Ethan as a way to strengthen their business alliance. However, Ethan had no interest in it as he didn't love her. Amelia on the other hand was a 25-year-old who behaved more like a spoilt teenager, oblivious to Ethan’s lack of interest in her. She was delusional and pursued him with relentless passion, convinced that he would eventually accept her. “Did you miss me?” Amelia chirped, her voice bursting with delight as she jumped into Ethan’s arms, wrapping herself around him. She giggled as her body wiggled with childish energy. Ethan’s face remained bland, his tone indifferent as he mumbled, “Hey.” He hardly looked at her, his face contorting slightly with discomfort. Amelia turned to Melinda, her high-pitched voice slicing through the air like a sharp bell. “Oh, hello!” she gushed. Tilting her head, her wide eyes stared at Melinda like a curious child. “Ethan, you didn

The entire board members and shareholders are waiting for you in the conference hall.”Her gaze was all over the place, and then it landed on the two of them, her expression hardening as she saw them. “So this is what you're doing? In the office, really Ethan?! And your investors are waiting for you downstairs!”Ethan simply rolled his eyes, unbothered, while Melinda hopped down from the office desk, her cheeks burning with embarrassment. Lila gave Melinda a venomous stare, her words soaked in cruelty,“This is the work you came here to do right? Being a whore!”“That’s enough Lila,” Ethan cut in immediately, his voice low and

“Hi, Ryan,” Melinda replied, her voice was flat and filled with scorn. She walked into the office, her eyes focused on the woman sitting at the office desk. “Hello, please I’m here to see Ryan. Can I borrow him for a minute?”“And you are?” The woman asked as she raised her eyebrow, curiosity written all over her face. A brief silence filled the air and then Ryan and Melinda blurted out almost at the same time,“He lives with me,”“She’s my ex-wife,”They both gave themselves a hard, cold stare before returning to the woman who was looking at them with so much confusion. Finally, the woman waved her hand dismissively, “Whatever… I’m done with him anyway.”Without saying a word, Ryan and Melinda walked out of the office, the tension between them thick. They walked down the staircase in silence, only the soft thug of their footsteps making a sound.Melinda paused at the bottom of the staircase and looked at the chair in the waiting room, contemplating whether they sat there or not but

Deborah stared at the open space as her thoughts raced, and Amelia’s gaze stayed fixed on her, waiting and trying to figure out what her mother would say.Deborah’s fingers unconsciously traced the shape of her jawline, her face hardening with uncertainty. “You're right,” she said calmly with conviction. “Let's just see how this goes…. If Ethan keeps being a stubborn goat, we will have no choice. She gradually shifted her gaze to the mirror in front of her, her thoughts already scheming. The two women sat in silence, their shared grudge choking the room as they stared ahead, united in their evil plans.——The door creaked as it opened and Melinda entered her parlor. On entering, a fou

Irene paused, her eyes fixed on Melinda as she struggled to find the right words. Her voice trembled, stumbling over words until she finally found the right words to say. “I r-returned back b-because…” She paused and adjusted herself, holding Melinda’s hands tightly. Her grip was warm yet unsteady, betraying the calm she desperately tried to show.“I came back because I needed to be close to you. Yes, I assumed you were probably dead but this city… It’s where I last saw you. I had to come back… to feel close to you.”She took a deep breath, her eyes dropping briefly before returning to Melinda again. “Then Sarah… the bitch is bedridden. God has helped me to punish her for all her sins, she’s now too weak to even pursue me. When I found out about her condition, I knew it was time… I had to come back.”Melinda studied her mum’s face, her expression reading skepticism. There was something about Irene’s story that felt off. The words seemed rehearsed, and her emotions felt overly calcula

“Yes Boss!” Liam’s voice echoed from the kitchen as he rushed out, his steps hurried and anxious.“Where were you when she was cooking this… this abomination?!” Ethan roared, his voice vibrating across the dining room into the parlor as his eyes were fiercely on Liam.“S-sir… I was preparing smoked salmon with poached eggs when she walked into the kitchen, demanding to make your meal for you. Ethan turned off the shower with a quick twist, water dripping down from his hair as he faced Amelia. “Amelia, what is it?” he growled, his voice echoing off the bathroom tiles, low and controlled as he tried to suppress his rising anger. I'm thinking of making pancakes with scrambled eggs but I don't know… would you prefer pancakes with bacon or shrimp and grits with Andouille sausage?” She replied, her tone bright and cheerful as if she didn't barge in on him taking a shower. Melinda turned, her heart almost racing out of her chest. She gasped as her eyes landed on the figure calling her. It was a woman… similar in height and physique, with the same dark black hair as hers, though shorter. The resemblance was striking, almost like staring at her reflection.“Mother…” The words escaped her lips like a shaky whisper. Her legs trembled under her. This was a woman she had mourned, a woman she thought was dead! The mother she hadn't seen since she was five years old. There she was, standing right in front of her. It felt like she had seen a ghost. For a brief moment, it felt like time had come to a halt. They just stared at each other, lips slightly opened but no words to describe the moment or say anything at all. Tears gathered in Irene’s eyes, glowing like delicate jewels as they dropped. Then Ethan broke the silence., his tone harsh and sharp, seeking clarification.“Excuse me?… Coming to stay with me because?…” His face twisted, revealing a blend of confusion and growing rage.“Because your carelessness put her in that condition! I didn't invite her nor did I cause her to slip and fall. So how's this a result of my carelessness?”“Besides, I thought she left at the time I told her to leave. How was I supposed to know she'll go hide in my kitchen to attack my guest after I left!” Ethan snapped, his voice escalating with each statement as his irritation boiled over.“That’s not the issue here!
