Arthur sits in the darkness, watching the slow and steady rhythm of her chest as she breathes in and out.
He doesn't even know this woman but something about her is tugging deeply on his heartstrings. Nobody, absolutely no one deserves to be treated as such trash. Daisy had said it herself that Charles's wife had cleaned their own house and this strange woman herself had said she got home by midnight to meet another woman in her own husband's bed... And even worse, much much worse, they have been married for over a year. The woman sighs softly and lays down on her side, deep asleep. That makes him wonder when last she has had such good sleep for her own body to shut down on her. Arthur rises up from the chair and walks over to her, crouching by the bed, he raises his hand and puts it over her face, not touching it but just tracing out the outlining of her face. Her curved jaw and sharp nose, with those curled eyelashes that look luxurious and her... She suddenly opens her eyes with his hands in mid air, right above her lips. He pauses, not letting the fact that she startled him show. Bethany shuffles slightly away from him while Arthur stands to his feet. "What do you want? Who are you? Why were you about to touch me?" She asks in rapid succession and he chuckles. "I don't mean any harm. You took a huge breath so I came to make sure you were still alive, considering that you had collapsed, I had to keep a watch over you." Bethany looks around and notes that it's really just himself and herself in the dimly lit room with a chair at the foot of the bed. "You were the one who brought me in here?" She asks, sitting up. "By yourself?" She vaguely remembers how he had caught her right before she had collapsed. She owed this unknown man. And Bethany absolutely hates owing people. Arthur shrugs. "I never introduced myself to you. My name is Arthur Worth. You don't need to introduce yourself to me, Bethany." She puts her legs over the bed gingerly, letting her hair fall in waves over her head, back and shoulders. "I want to leave this family. I don't like the name Worth... I don't like you." She risks a glance at his pristine face and she catches a tiny smile that flickers away. Pretty much a lie if you ask her. Arthur only scoffs. "Are you sure about that? You were married to him for two years and for a year and half out of that, he was married to another woman, seeing her while seeing you too... I understand if you hate the man but why hate the name? It didn't offend you. Only the character did." "The name didn't offend me... It tortured me." She laughs ruefully. "Do you know, about a week ago, I had gone to the grocery store to get some things and a woman was asking how much something was worth. At the mention of the word, I jumped and everything I had been carrying spilled all over. Hearing the word in itself is making me jump, not even talking about the name and then the family..." Arthur walks to the door. "You want a divorce right?" Bethany looks up at him. "You saw and heard it. I am trapped in this sham marriage." "I know the family hasn't treated you well but allow me to make an exception..." His hands glance ever so briefly to her bandaged hand. "All you need is Charles's seal on a divorce document right?" Unsure but somehow, trusting him, Bethany nods. "Fine. I'll have my lawyer dissolve the marriage in front of a judge. You don't even need to be there. He just needs the documents with both your seals. I'll get Charles's seal for you tonight. Get yours ready. I'll see you in two hours." He suddenly leans in and she takes in a sharp breath. He runs his hand down her chin and smirks. "I'll get you out of here." Arthur gives a small, mysterious smile and then goes out of the room, closing the door gently behind him. Bethany watches the door for a few moments, wondering how the man is going to help her. Who is he to the family? How was he going to convince Charles to divorce her? What was it about him that made her heart skip in a way that she does not like one bit? True enough, his small touch to her bare skin had caused it to tingle and it went down to her stomach... She raises her hand unconsciously and touches that same spot. Too many thoughts are going through her head and she suddenly feels a bit woozy, she lays down on the bed, glancing at the time. She notes that it's already few minutes past four pm in the evening. She had been out for that long? Bethany sighs as she drifts off to sleep once again. * The next morning, Charles wakes up alone in the bed. Feeling slightly groggy, he sighs to himself, wondering aloud when Bethany will come to her senses and just accept Alexa as her junior wife. He puts his legs into his crocs and walk into the bathroom where he splashes some water on his face. He looks at himself in the mirror. "What happened last night? I don't remember much. Did I have too much to drink?" He mutters aloud and he pours some more water on his face to fully wake himself up. He currently has the worst headache and he shuffles around, searching for his phone. He finds it and notes how empty the whole house sounds, he can't hear the usual morning hum of Bethany's vacuum cleaning, or the familiar clanging of plates and spoons as she always managed to make noise with them whenever she was cleaning them, no matter how gently she claimed to have handled them. Talking of hands, Charles catches a glimpse of something black and he turns his hand over to see his palms. He examines the black spot on his thumb and he frowns... Suddenly, he has a flashback from the night before. Someone had forced his thumb down on a document while he had been drunkenly rambling away! Alarmed, he goes down the staircase, hurriedly passing everything by until he comes to a stop in front of Bethany's room. He pulls open the door and it opens in his hands so easily. Everything seems to be in place, all except the one thing he had wanted to see the most. Bethany. "Beth? Beth?" He calls out, secretly hoping she's probably taking a bath but as he walks in, he sees a document on the bed and picks it up. He gasps slightly. Below the document was an handwritten note that said "Here's a copy for you, I am no more your wife. Fuck you both." And sure enough, there are two fingerprints and seals on the document. He grabs his phone and calls his parents. "Mum? Dad? Bethany is gone!"Exactly a week and three days later, it's very early in the morning in Charles's Worth home and now, he lives with his newly celebrated wife, who is now free to live with her husband ever since the first wife decided to leave of her own free will...Only that a couple things are starting to change...Charles comes in frustrated and runs his hands through his hair over and over again. "Argh!"Alexa turns in bed and opens her eyes. "What's got you so riled up this early in the morning?"Charles looks over at her and sighs, trying to suppress the boiling rage within him. "It's nothing, go back to bed." It's all you ever do anyway."Did you say something?""What? No." He stands up from the unlaid bed and walks down the living room, he looks around and realizes how much, within a week, the whole place looks like a pigsty. His mind does a flashback to just two weeks ago, and maybe as far back as two years ago. Bethany was an early riser and even before Charles, who as well woke up pretty ea
"I, Arthur Worth, is married to Bethany Worth, the beautiful woman on the television right now." He states again, flashing an identical ring with the one they just saw on the screen on Bethany's finger. The light catches on it and it's unmistakeably the same one that Bethany had shown to the world.Charles immediately springs up and dives for Arthur's collar. "You're what?! You're just an ordinary uncle of mine... Married to Bethany? Who are you to her? She's my...""Your what?" Arthur asks him coolly, maintaining the eye contact so Charles will realize what he is doing. "Don't tell me you were about to call her your wife?" Arthur raises his hands and effortlessly sweep Charles's invasive hands off his chest area. He breezes past him and stands in front of everyone, between the despicable Worth family and the television where the interview is still ongoing although no one is listening now.Arthur clears his throat. "Oh no, I am not about to explain myself and my decisions to you... Bu
Back in John's living room, Daisy is pacing around, livid. "Why will you take such a decision without consulting us? Do you just how much desperate she must have been to seduce you?"Arthur rolled his eyes. "I was the one who asked her to marry me, she did not in any way seduce me or show loss of morality like you're implying."Charles stands up from where he had been biting his nails and come to Arthur in front. "I'm sorry for grabbing you by the collar earlier but see where I am coming from. She divorced me without my permission... I know that sounds pretty stupid but it's what she did. If she can do that to me while I am drunk, imagine the horrendous things she can do to you while you're not looking."Arthur maintains a level gaze and let's him finish rambling before replying. "First, she did no such thing."Charles shakes his head vehemently. "I knew you would not believe me when I said that. That's exactly how it went, all of us here including her was in that house, she is the on
Just the next morning, Bethany wakes up as early as she always does and heads downstairs to make breakfast for herself and Arthur, what she did not expect is that she'll meet Arthur down there already, making bacon and eggs."Good morning." She greets, standing by the door.He turns around and smiles. "Good morning, please come have a seat." His eyes wander down to her hands and he suddenly rinses his hands in the tap and comes over to meet her. "You took off the bandage?""It was long overdue..." She massages the back of her palm where the bandage had been wrapped around from the coffee burn. "It's going to scar though.""I won't let it." He walks over to the living room where Beth peeks after him but he soon goes out of sight and then returns with a small lotion in his hands. "I had gotten this yesterday but I had forgotten to give it to you. They say it works quite well to clean burn scars. Maybe you should give it a try?""Tha... Uhm, I will."Arthur chuckles. "I see you're gettin
Her words spark a reaction in everyone in the lobby, including the receptionist who immediately rings up Jade and exchanges a few words with her.Alexa smirks at the reaction she's able to get from the people as they start to gather and to murmur amongst themselves. "Oh, you're wondering if it is true? It is completely and totally true. I received an anonymous tip this morning that my husband, who did not come home last night has spent the whole night with this whore."The elevator opens and out comes the tall, black haired secretary, Jade. She simply looks at the door and the men nod immediately, reading the meaning in her look. With the aura she possesses, as she walks to meet Alexa in the middle of the large hall, the people standing in her way part so she can walk through to the front."Are you sure about this claims?"Alexa turns to her immediately, completely thinking something else. She definitely has the look of a reporter so Alexa thought she's reached out so she can get an e
"When I was three years old, some of you have got children that age or maybe even less, either way, I went missing as a child. Still don't know how that happened but I disappeared when I was three. When I became conscious of myself and my surroundings, I discovered I didn't have parents and was living in an orphanage run on charity... Things were tight. Even that I had to do after school jobs and all of that just to make ends meet."By now, the whole hall is silent and hanging on to her every word while she mentally accesses the situation before her.Daisy is there, waiting to lay a bait so that all these reporters that line up the front row on the other side will have something to drag her for but if she wants to have a successful life, she must avoid online conflicts by all means, and even if they do happen, it must be in her favor...And what's better to bring a person to the right side than a sob story? True story, but sob all the same... "When I turned eighteen, I was turned out
Back in the office, Bethany breathes a heavy sigh of relief as she grabs her bag off the couch. "We can leave now.""Sure." Arthur opens the door for her and she heads out first.Jade is standing right there in the doorway. "You had informed me that you won't be around for most of today so most of your meetings have been rescheduled between tomorrow and the day after.""Thank you very much Jade.""Also, I wanted to ask if we should blacklist Daisy Worth?""Yes please. John Worth too, even though he has not come here yet. That's practically the whole family.""Noted ma'am. Have a nice day."Bethany nods her thanks and walks past with Arthur nodding slightly at the secretary as he passes her by.Jade keeps her expressionless eye on the duo till the elevator doors close before she turns around and walks into her office, setting to the work.At the lobby, people bow in greeting and voice their greetings each as the duo walk by."You're cool ma'am." Someone says and she laughs, forcing the
The kiss lasts for about three minutes before he pulls away, trying to catch his breath. He then chuckles."What's funny?" She asks, breathlessly."I just thought of something.""What is that?""You take my breath away, literally."She rolls her eyes and laughs lightly, the earlier tense moments forgotten. "We are here." He announces as he looks out the window to see the tall gates that he's starting to get familiar with. The gates open right when they get to the front.Bethany does not fail to notice the blinking cameras at the top of the gate pillars that are turned their way.The car drives by and enters into the large estate. Not a compound, an estate. It's so large that there are acres and acres of vineyards stretched on both sides of the road and at the end of it is some scattered apartments and homes for members of the staff to live in so there is no shortage of staff around.Right smack in the middle of the large expanse of land is a castle like building. That night, as Bethany Worth settles into bed after a long and eventful day, Arthur has gone to get them one extra bottle of wine to celebrate in their room, her phone vibrates on the nightstand. The screen lights up with a call from an unknown number. She frowns slightly, wondering who could be calling this late. After a moment of hesitation, she answers it.“Hello?” Bethany starts cautiously, waiting to hear who the caller is and why. There is a brief pause on the other end before a voice speaks. “Hi, is this Bethany? I’m sorry for calling so late. My name is Melanie Martins. I’m a friend of Quinn.”Melanie.“He had been Melanie’s ex boyfriend…” Quinn had said that.Bethany immediately straightens up in bed, her full attention now on the caller. “Yes, this is Bethany. Quinn gave you my number?”“Yes ma’am, she gave it to me yesterday. I... I know the man who did that to Quinn.” Melanie says immediately, her voice steady but carrying a hint of urgency.Bethany’s heart skips a beat, he
The blaring of the wake up call shattered the entire silence of the barracks, pulling groggy and half asleep soldiers from the depths of their slumber. The sun had yet to rise at all, but a lone orange light casts a soft, pale glow over the training grounds.Groans and heavy sighs filled the air as boots hit the ground, weary bodies slipping into uniforms with mechanical precision. It is what they are programmed to do every morning just before their morning drills and stuffs.Private, Second Class Mason Campbell adjusted his belt and slung his gear over his shoulders. He was only in his second year of mandatory service, but the routine was already second nature to him. As he fell in line with the others, his eyes briefly scanned the faces around him. Some were resigned, some irritated, and others, like him, were simply enduring another day, staring to actually adapt to it.The morning drill commenced under the sharp eyes of the drill sergeants. Orders were barked, and soldiers moved in
Bethany Worth arrives home earlier than usual, a lightness in her step that she hasn’t felt in weeks. The stress and pressure of the past few months has weighed pretty heavily on her shoulders, but after today, after seeing that small glimpse of support amidst the chaos, she feels a spark of joy returning. She drops her keys on the counter and walks straight into the kitchen, deciding that tonight is the night for something special. A lavish dinner for her and Arthur, something indulgent, something that reminds them both of better, simpler times than being splashed on the news every morning, afternoon and night. As she rummages through the fridge and pantry, her mind settles on a dish that will be both comforting and elegant.Coq au Vin.A classic French dish, rich and hearty, but with a refined flavor that she knows Arthur will appreciate. It is as good as going to a five starred restaurant because she can make it even better in her own home. She set to work immediately, chopping onio
John Worth can feel his heart pounding away deep in his chest as he speeds through the crowded streets of Brooklyn. His lawyer, Mark Henson, follows closely behind in another car, and John can’t help but replay the past few days over and over in his mind. Daisy in trouble, Charles's strange phone calls... none of it sits right with him. Now, Daisy is at the police station, and he has to get to the bottom of it, to get her out of there before things spiral out of control. They can’t possibly suspect his wife for murdering that scheming bitch, because she did not.As John parked outside the station, he quickly steps out of the car, the cool afternoon air doing nothing to cool his nerves. Mark walks up beside him after parking his own car, adjusting his tie and giving John a serious look. “You’ve been keeping me in the dark about this, John,” Mark said in a low voice. “What exactly are we walking into?”John clenches his jaw, avoiding the question. “Let’s just get Daisy out of here. We c
Back in the police van, Daisy sat with her hands folded in her lap. The city passed by in a blur through the window, but her mind was somewhere else. She could feel the tension in the air, and despite the detective’s silence, she knows they are ready to pounce with questions the moment they arrived at the station. In hindsight, she did something real stupid, truly. She can’t hide him forever. Her thoughts drift to John and then to Sienna, and to the events that had just spiraled out of control over the past week and few days. How had it all come to this?“Almost there, Mrs. Worth.” Marsh says from the front, breaking her thoughts as he glances at her tensed up body sitting at the back. The eyes looking ahead and yet so far away.Daisy nods, not trusting herself to speak. She stares out the window, the buildings getting taller as they near the city center and the police station gradually comes into view. She isn’t ready for what was about to happen. How could she ever be ready for some
The detectives were waiting for her down there by the lobby as Marsh had said earlier, standing by the entrance. Marsh and Halloway stand with their backs straight, their expressions unreadable as they watch Daisy approach.Though they had not cuffed her for Quinn’s sake, there is not much difference in being cuffed or not when a person is being arrested as a suspect. They won’t tell her arrest but she knows pretty well.Fingerprints are big pieces of evidences. But she did not do it, and somehow, she knows the officer she shares a look with just now knows that fact.Daisy swallows hard, trying desperately to keep her emotions in check. The hospital lobby is as busy as usual, but to her, everything feels muted. Almost like she is walking over to an executioner who will put her head in a guillotine and hack!, her head is gone… the whispers of passing nurses, the shuffling feet of patients walking and being walked is all a blur, drowned out by the loud thudding of her heart. She knew Qui
The interview airs the next day, and the public reaction is immediate. The tabloids lit up with headlines. Such as…“Millicent Fires Back: Claims Bethany Worth Orchestrated Scandal!”“Millicent Atkinson Accuses Bethany of Manipulation, Sabotage and Loss of her Husband!”Social media explodes with reactions, many siding with Millicent, others defending Bethany. But the story has been set in motion, and there is no turning back now.She is now not just a homewrecker or husband thief, she is now a gold digger alongside the many names. People were questioning everything, had Bethany really been behind the viral recording? Was Millicent telling the truth, or was this just another ploy to shift the blame? Then the video from the restaurant comes out, and they all see Bethany playing the recording for everyone to hear. What had been her own instrument of safety has been cleanly turned back around, and the video is now her own sentencing.Back at Arthur and Bethany’s home, the atmosphere is no
She sits on the floor of her room, her phone back in her hands with a new manager. This one seems completely supportive of her new moves after all.She checks up on her Instagram DMs and after checking past all the angry messages left by fans, supportive messages and even cursing, she arrives at the one she had been expecting, one she had been diligently checking for since the whole thing began. An interview invite to one of the biggest show houses in the country. There will be no better place to tell the world her own side of the story.Well, her own new side of the story, since they all seemed to have Bethany’s side alone, she still has the support of many people with her anyway.Three hours later, Millicent Atkinson walks confidently into the brightly lit studio, her expression cool and composed, nothing on her face gives away nothing of how she really feels, she feels elated that soon, the tides will turn on her side again, against that scheming witch.Although, even Millicent wil
Quinn lay there on her hospital bed, staring blankly at the white, partitioned ceiling. It is white and empty just like everything has been for many days now.The room is quiet, and the silence only increases the ache in her chest and the wild voices in her head, the silence only makes them louder and unable to ignore as they yell things into her conscious state. Her tears come softly, silently, rolling down her cheeks as she thinks profusely about everything that had happened. There was no one by her side in that moment and even now, and in this moment, the loneliness hit her even harder than ever.Daisy had gone off somewhere about an hour prior to this minute, Charles only comes by in the mornings and the late evenings and John has never visited since she has been conscious. Something must have happened but no one is telling her anything and it is frustrating enough already. She sniffles, trying in vain to compose herself, not wanting anyone, especially Daisy, to see her like this,
