AUTHORS POV
A week passed by, Gavin hadn't returned home. He called the house telephone, and Emily picked up. He told her he was on a business trip in Paris. He asked of Ethan and she told him he was practicing Hockey in his room. Gavin got angry and asked to speak with Ethan. Ethan put the telephone on the table and went to the kitchen while Gavin ranted to himself. Ethan kept on saying, "Yes, I heard you." every minute. Gavin asked if Sydney had taken her drugs, then he ended the call and hadn't called since. "I need need a bag of vegetables, four packs spaghetti..." Sydney had the phone pressed to her ears with her shoulder as she talked to a salesperson. He was listening to rock music as he took her order. She was convinced he wasn't listening because she had repeated herself continuously. "Four cartoons of root bear and six Scottish wines. Check." Sydney groaned. "Forget it. I'll stop by and get it myself. "Took you long enough." He ended the call. Sydney threw Ethan's clothes into the washing machine. She wanted to be sequestered from the world. She had been receiving hateful emails since the rumor about her and Gabriel's affair. When she'd check the mailbox she saw tones of heart-warming messages for Gavin. He'd managed to get what he wanted. She was a sit-at-home mum with nothing to do. She heard the doorbell ring. "I'm coming, if it's a mail, leave it in the mailbox." Sydney opened the door and saw Sofia holding a box of donuts. Sofia frowned when she saw how pale and gaunt Sydney looked. "What are you doing here, Sofia? Come in." Sofia looked star-struck as she took the majestic house in. She felt like she walked into a vibrant fiery haven. The LED lighting system, embedded in the walls and ceiling, shifted seamlessly from soothing blues and greens to fiery reds and oranges. The room was now bathed in a warm, golden glow, evoking the crackling flames of a campfire. "I wanted to know how you are doing. The company is boring without you." Sydney didn't believe that, considering how many times she had shouted at her for just minor issues. "I didn't expect anyone to miss me." "Well, I do, Mrs. Reed. I brought you donuts." Sofia smiled nervously and handed it to her. "You didn't have to but, thank you." Sydney took the donuts and placed them in the fridge. Sofia helped Sydney wash the dishes since the dishwasher was faulty. They talked about work. Sydney was happy Alfred considered her request. Sofia changed the topic and asked about her family but Sydney didn't want to answer. "I'm low on groceries. Would you mind getting them for me from the grocery store down the street? I have to pick up Ethan and Emily." Sofia shrugged. "Anything for Mrs. Reed." Sydney smiled gratefully. They talked about books and celebrities before Sydney had to take a shower. ————— Ethan didn't have practice today so Sydney took him with to Theresa's. Theresa managed to convince her to stay for an hour. They were watching, The Kissing Booth, in the living room. "Mum, can we leave now." Ethan groaned, tired of watching Emily and Authur spell words he hadn't heard before. "You can play Call Of Duty with Vanessa and Oliver," Theresa suggested. Ethan's eyes glowed with excitement. He got up from the dinette chair. "Where are they." Without peeling her eyes off the screen, Theresa replied, "Upstairs, second room by the left. Call me if the door is closed and make sure you knock and wait for five minutes before entering if it is." Ethan nodded and ran up the stairs. Sydney released a breath. "I have to leave now, Theresa." "But you didn't stay for an hour." "I know, I stayed for two." Sydney immediately regretted saying that, when she saw Theresa's shoulder slump. "I'm sorry but I have to make dinner." Theresa forced a smile. "Okay, but I'll drive Ethan and Emily back, you look like you need a long nap." Sydney smiled gratefully. "Thank you." "Since you are home all the time. Every Thursday and Saturday at the country club, old folks comes to play tennis. You could stop by sometimes. " She knew if she refused, Theresa would press on the matter. So, she replied simply, "I'll try." _________________ "Dad!" Avery exclaimed happily after she opened her front door and saw Auxanger. His smile widened and he pulled her into a hug. "Three months seems like a lifetime." Avery chuckled and pulled back. "Tell me about it. Come in!" Auxanger stepped into the room and his smile was replaced with a grimaced. He suddenly felt angry as he sat on the faded slumped couch in the middle of the room. He shifted, unnerved when he noticed the deplorable condition of the roof. "That could cause a lot of damage during a storm." Avery smiled wryly. "I'll have it changed this week. What would you like to eat, Dad?" Auxanger waved her off. "Don't bother yourself. I wouldn't want to add more to your problems." Avery went to sit next to him. Auxanger had a bitter look on his face. "Any time I think of that son of a b!tch, I lose my mind. If only that bastard had taught his son how to control those things between his legs... I warned you that girl would betray you one day." Avery's body turned rigid. "I wish I listened." Auxanger scoffed. "You can't correct the past, can you? You had something good in your hands and you foolishly handed it to that girl." Avery's hatred towards Sydney surged. "I had no idea she'd betray me." Auxanger sneered, " Have you heard the saying, tit for tat Avery? Take back what she took away from you, from us. And that husband of hers, he's also a party in this. I wouldn't have been such a terrible father-" "Dad." Avery stopped him. She shook her head, angry tears glistening in her eyes. "You are not a terrible father." She held his hand and spoke through gritted teeth. "Trust me, the game only just began."Mummy granddaddy wants to speak with you," Emily shouted from the living room.Sydney ran out of the kitchen and into the living room. She took the telephone from Emily and placed her hand over the microphone. "Go play with Ethan and Kelly."Emily nodded and ran to the back porch. Sydney gathered her wits and placed the telephone on her ear. "Hello, Daddy.""Who the f**k are you calling daddy Sydney? You lost every right to be called my daughter several years ago."She leaned on the wall and waited for him to continue. "I started to consider you as a daughter, Sydney, but you succeeded in proving you are nothing but a mistake like your mother."He continued, madly. "How dare you have an affair Sydney! Don't you know it would affect my business? I kept telling them you mean absolutely nothing to me but they won't listen. I have lost billions' worth of contracts because of your infidelity."People are saying you purposely killed your child because you didn't want that bastard you call
Gavin scrutinized the papers in front of him, his eyes narrowing in concentration. As the executive leader, he occupied the central chair in the spacious conference hall, where a sea of chairs curved around the perimeter, forming a vast U. Clayton Wesley, a dynamic young intern, stood at the podium, his voice filled with conviction as he unveiled his visionary idea: Mechanical Gloves. This pioneering technology promised to redefine the boundaries of human potential, enabling athletes to build strength and enhance performance like never before - a game-changing innovation with far-reaching implications. Mr. Wilson, directing governor of the fifth largest firm in North America, nudged Gavin. "You haven't said a word, Mr. Reed, you are scaring the poor boy. He's sweating bullets under the AC." Although Gavin was the youngest amongst everyone in the hall, they all accorded him with indefatigable respect.Gavin's intimidating eyes moved to the intern. He felt nostalgic, remembering
AUTHORS POV THE ICU lights dimmed signaling the end of a high-risk delivery. The ward was almost silent except for the bickering of nurses and Doctor Natasha. Gavin held his wife's hand firmly, his eyes glowed with anxious tears threatening to escape his green eyes. Doctor Natasha, turned to the married couple after handing their immobile baby to a nurse. A glimpse of sadness flashed in her eyes through her glasses. “I'm sorry, Mr. Reed, but your child couldn't make it.” Doctor Natasha announced grimly. Gavin's grip on Sydney's pale hand loosened, his heartbeat matched the beeping of the Life support monitor. “There were high traces of caffeine in her bloodstream as well as the baby's. Unfortunately, the baby couldn't survive it.” Gavin said nothing. His eyes drifted to his dead baby and then to Sydney. She was crying, normally, he would wipe her tears away, but instead, it disgusted him. “I'm sorry,” she mouthed, veins bulging from her forehead. He said nothing but st
AUTHORS POV SYDNEY was going mad and the nurses had to run to get anesthesia. “I need to go home.” She barked for the umpteenth time. It hadn't been up to a minute since she woke up from surgery, and she demanded to return home. After Gavin's curt exit, Sydney's heart began to fail due to her severe pre-eclampsia pregnancy. “You aren't stable now, your blood pressure may heighten if you do not rest.” The doctor was tired of explaining, she had already begun sweating. If Sydney stayed a night in the hospital, she was surely going to lose it. The corpse of Xavier hunted her. If only she had listened to Gavin, none of this would have happened. “What about my kids?” She struggled in the doctor's hand. Her hair was disheveled, and her mascara was ruined. She was just about to leave for work when an excruciating pain hit her earlier. Thinking about it, she had always been fine till sunrise. “We can't bring them in. They won't be able to see you this way. Nurse Tiffany hurry up!” On a
AUTHORS POV “I can't believe he didn't stay with you during postpartum.” Avery drove Sydney home. Ethan and Emily were asleep in the back seat. Sydney had dark circles under her eyes; she didn't look like the immaculate businesswoman everyone knew. She's spent three days being tormented by Xavier's spirit and Gavin didn't take the liberty to visit her. Sydney sniffed.“He must still be hurt, I understand.” He had come to take Ethan and Emily home, but Emily didn't want to leave their mother; on the other hand, Ethan was mad at him for lying. Avery held a scoff. “That doesn't justify his actions. No man would leave their wife after she just put to bed.” Sydney didn't want to talk about it but Avery kept on talking. “Syd, I know you are blaming yourself for Xavier's death; you should stop. It isn't healthy.” Sydney bit her lips. “I should have listened to Gavin.” She had decided to be defiant for five years and see where it got her. Avery rolled her eyes. “Oh please, a man has no
AUTHORS POV SYDNEY'S heart thudded in her chest at Gavin's words. She wasn't sure she heard him right. Tears immediately began running down her cheeks. Gavin's eyes softened, he had no choice. “I said I was sorry.” She hoped it was just mirth. Gavin looked away.”The divorce papers will be ready tomorrow. I'll mail it to your office, you'll probably be busy with work to care.” How could he say that? She loved him, but she wasn't sure he felt the same. Was Avery right? Is he using the baby as an excuse to divorce her because she sexually castrated him? She grabbed the collar of his shirt and looked up at him. “How can you say I wouldn't care?” He wanted to wipe her tears away but he held himself. “If you'd care, you would have been a proper mother.” and wife. “What do you mean? I was always there for Ethan and Emily. I never missed PTA meetings, I read them to sleep every night.” and what about your husband? Gavin tasted something bitter. “That wasn't enough Syd. After you sudde
AUTHOR'S POVSYDNEY held her ears, rocking back and forth. Gabriel's house was a small bungalow a few miles away from Beverly Hills. Sydney was scared shitless when Gabriel drove into the forest but heaved a sigh of relief when she saw a quaint bungalow with numerous logs of trees in front and tools carelessly on the ground. It's been exactly two hours since Gavin had asked for a divorce. As she sat by the fireplace, she could hear his hateful words haunting her mind.Gabriel walked into the obsolete wooden living room decorated with animal skins and quaint abstract paintings of nature, he held a mug of coffee in his hand.“You'll burst if you keep holding it in.” He placed a hand on her back and dropped the mug on the table.Sydney slowly took her hand off her ears like it had been glued to it. She looked at Gabriel as he kicked the firewood that had fallen out of the fireplace, inside .“Thank you.”He sat a few inches away from her. She uttered grace and sipped the coffee. He seemed
AUTHORS POV The junior sales representative of Omnium V&P Marketing Enterprise called Sydney. "Are you okay Mrs. Reed?" Sofia asked, concern dripping in her tone. Sydney was sorting out the laundry when she called. "I'm fine, Sofia. Aren't you supposed to be working?" She wondered if Gavin had already informed the press about her miscarriage. "The SD put Riley in charge; she does the job better than me anyway." "Sofia, she's equally a newbie under training as you are. I've told you countless times to stop underestimating yourself." Sydney threw Emily's gray hoodie in the laundry basket. Sofia sighed, no one could win a debate with Sydney. "I didn't call to talk about me, Mrs. Reed... Are you sure you are fine?" Sydney stood with the laundry basket under her arm. "Is there a reason why I shouldn't be fine?" she hoped Gavin hadn't disclosed the news yet. "I know you aren't fine Mrs. Reed, even if no one believes you, I do. I know-" Sydney lost her patience. "Sofia I do
