I stood right in front of the golden-handled door. The polished wood was beautifully carved, exuding a luxury that seemed to synergize with the other furniture around it. It was a symbol of splendor that belonged only to the Langley family-my husband's family.
Who doesn't know the name Langley? A renowned furniture company that has dominated the world market with its products that are always sold out within hours of launch. Under Roderick Langley's leadership, the business has grown exponentially, reaching into new sectors despite the passing of its patriarch, Sebastian Langley.
Sebastian lost his long battle with illness. The best doctors had been brought in to treat him, but fate would have it differently. In the seconds before a rescheduled surgery due to his deteriorating condition, his life was taken. Since then, the Langley family has been in mourning. However, for me, it was the beginning of a much more painful hell.
I, Evangeline Rutherford, was the wife of Roderick Langley. The marriage that started out full of promise and hope turned sour after the passing of my father-in-law. Rick, my husband, began to openly humiliate me. He picked up another woman, bringing her to this house, where I still live. Shamelessly, he made out with her intimately as if I were just a lifeless ornament in this magnificent palace.
“Did you bring her back?” I asked one day. I had just finished my meal. The aroma of honey-soaked roast chicken filled the spacious and luxurious kitchen. In the past, every dish of mine was always praised. My father-in-law and even Rick himself-in Sebastian's presence-enjoyed every dish I served.
However, this time, Rick didn't even turn his head. He only cast a fleeting glance at the plate I was carrying.
“None of your business,” he replied coldly.
This chest felt tight. However, I tried to stand up straight, holding back the emotions that were about to explode in my heart. I wanted to scream, wanted to ask her to stop being like this. However, I knew it wouldn't do any good.
“Maria!” called Rick to the butler who had been standing not far from us.
Maria rushed over, her face tense. I could tell that she felt the tension created between us.
“From this moment on, I don't want to smell this woman's cooking anymore,” she said, her voice sounding so cold and piercing.
My heart seemed to stop beating. “What do you mean, Rick?” I asked in a trembling voice. “Is my cooking not good? What part is missing? Or is there something on the menu you'd like to eat?” I tried to find a way to understand the reason behind his increasingly outrageous behavior.
“Shut up!” he snapped suddenly.
I shuddered. My grip on the plate of grilled chicken tightened. In an instant, the already tense atmosphere turned even more tense.
Rick looked at me with sharp, hateful eyes. “Since when do I ever want to eat your cooking, Eva?” he said, full of contempt. “You're enjoying being the favorite son-in-law too much, aren't you?”
I didn't understand what had made him change like this. In the past, Rick was a warm man in his father's presence. Although not always romantic, at least he never treated me this cruelly. However, after Sebastian's departure, his attitude seemed to change one hundred and eighty degrees. I was no longer someone precious in his eyes.
“Bury your dreams like they buried Papa's coffin,” he continued, in a mocking tone.
My heart broke. I couldn't believe the words that had just come out of his mouth. “We all mourn Papa's passing,” I said softly, trying to hold back the sobs that were starting to fill my chest. “But you shouldn't have said something like that to me, Rick.”
Rick stepped closer, making me spontaneously step back. There was something in the look in his eyes that made fear creep through my body. My emerald green eyes caught his cold, domineering expression.
My back was now against the kitchen wall. I was trapped.
“Aren't you the beneficiary?” Rick laughed sarcastically. “Do you know what Papa wrote in his will?”
I blinked, trying to understand where he was going with this.
“I...” this voice came out trembling, ”I don't know, Rick.”
However, I could feel a bad feeling running through my veins. Rick's gaze was not only full of hatred, but also such deep disappointment. It was as if I was a thorn in the flesh standing in his way.
I held my breath, waiting for the next blow that would probably hurt more than all the insults he had thrown at me.
In my heart, I wondered-how could someone who once promised to love me turn into a monster who couldn't even hide his hatred anymore?
The man grinned faintly. His face, which was no longer adorned with a smile or happiness when he was with me, further showed his obvious hatred for me, his wife. “Most of the shares of DnA Property went to you. I don't know if this is bad luck or good luck for you, Eva.” Rick was getting closer.
Even his breath brushed my face mercilessly, sending chills down my spine. But Rick never seemed to care about how I felt.
“You get a sizable dividend from DnA Property's profits without having to contribute anything,” Rick chuckled. “I can't figure out how Papa could do this to me.”
The plate with the roasted chicken was rudely pushed aside. It hit the marble floor and created a noise. I closed my eyes tightly, trying to stand upright before Rick even though my body was shaking violently.
“You're just an outsider who suddenly came into this family, Eva. Taking away my freedom and now, making a fortune without working.” Rick laughed loudly, his tone full of contempt. “Maybe for you it's luck, but calm down...” He reached out, touching my cheek with a gesture that seemed gentle, but made me even more frightened.
“I'll make sure what you get, I get back.”
My heart raced. I swallowed, trying to muster what courage I had left. “I never intended to do a deed of inheritance which, if it really has my name on it, I'm really not interested in.”
Rick laughed even harder. “You think I'm gullible, Eva?”
I braced myself, looking at him with a look of determination in my eyes. “There was never the slightest intention of getting rich off this family, Rick, if that's what you want to hear from me. You can look into the two years I've lived here. Have I ever enjoyed all the facilities you've given me on a whim?”
Rick was still looking at me with a doubtful look in his eyes. However, I no longer cared. All I wanted was to get out of this hell.
“I just want to know one thing; did you bring her again?”
The man smirked. “None of your business.” Then he walked away. I breathed a sigh of relief, taking this opportunity to breathe in as much air as possible. But before Rick could leave the kitchen area, he said, “I take it you're a selfish woman for not wanting Papa's inheritance. Tomorrow a lawyer will come to take care of the transfer of your shares.”
My hands were clenched tightly.
“You shouldn't mind, right?”
The memory made me take a deep breath. Since the beginning, my arrival to this house was not a happy one. Ah... happy, but false. It only lasted a few hours after our wedding. But I'm not someone who likes to wallow in regret. As long as Rick didn't hit me, didn't physically hurt me except for the grip on my face, let me stay near Rita, and helped me take care of Tian as a form of gratitude, I could survive.
But today, everything had to end. Rick no longer allows me to be here.
“Madam,” someone called out, making me turn my head. A smile appeared on my face as soon as I saw who was approaching.
“Mrs. Rita is asleep. The dinner she made was all eaten. She said that Madame's cooking is at the level of a luxury hotel.”
This chest felt warm. “Thank goodness.”
“Madam... are you going to take Mr. Rick at his word this time?” Maria asked cautiously.
I no longer insisted. I had no holds barred, and I realized that Rick never wanted me in the first place. I was a nightmare for him.
“Yes, Maria. I have prepared everything. But please, promise me one thing.”
Maria couldn't hold back her tears. To her, Eva was like a light that brought this big house to life. Her presence brought such a warm aura. The way she behaved, the way she spoke, and the attention she always gave to all the residents of this house, reminded Maria of the original owner; Marguerite Langley.
Gentle and full of sincere love.
Unfortunately, Rick could never feel that.
“Every encounter has an end, Maria.” I rubbed the middle-aged woman's cheeks which were now wet with tears. “My status is the heart of this house, but I was never near the heart of the owner.” I smiled sadly. “So, what else is holding me back?”
My gaze returned to the door. I could feel my own heartbeat getting heavier. My breathing was shaky, but I had to keep going.
“Take good care of Mami Rita. Tell her I'm going on vacation with Rick somewhere far away. Don't ever say anything about the truth. Rick, Mummy Rita's favorite son. Always perfect and will continue to be perfect. I am the stain that ruined Rick's life.”
No need to wait for tomorrow. My preparations have already been completed. I've even said goodbye to some of the people who live in this luxurious house. Not wanting to intrude, I chose to order a taxi instead of accepting the offer of the driver who usually accompanied me everywhere.“But, ma'am.” Hans, the Langley family's driver groaned in frustration. All the words of persuasion went completely ignored. I just stood up, trying to stay strong, while flashing my warm smile. “It's already late. You could get into trouble leaving this late.”“Don't make me feel heavier, Mr. Hans.” I briefly patted the middle-aged man's shoulder, which looked somber. “I hope you'll help me look after Mrs. Rita. Don't let her be sad that I'm no longer here.”“Madam,” Maria couldn't contain herself anymore. Her eyes, which had been glazed over, spilled over. Her cheeks were wet with tears. “What can I do to keep you here?”I tried hard not to get carried away. My heart was breaking. It hurt so much to pa
I stared in disbelief at the three pieces of paper Maximilian Von Ziegler thrust in front of me. Ever since I first set foot in this magnificent building-which is far more futuristic and iconic-I had no idea that my arrival would end like this. My heart was beating wildly, getting more and more uncontrollable as my eyes couldn't take my eyes off the numbers.“This... is impossible.” I finally managed to make a sound, though it sounded so weak and shaky. “You're blackmailing me?” I stared angrily at the man in front of me. “There's no way the repairs are this expensive.”Maximilian just chuckled softly, as if enjoying my surprise. “You forget, Miss, my car is the latest Lamborghini. Limited edition. You can check it on the luxury car market and try to calculate the price yourself. The damage you caused may seem trivial, but that pole damaged my car's engine and dashboard quite badly.”I gaped wide.“Should I hold that power pole over there accountable?” He leaned back comfortably in hi
Irena didn't blink at all. The woman who came out of the dressing room looked embarrassed and a little uncomfortable in the clothes she was wearing. What's more, it seemed like the woman still didn't fully agree with what had just happened. Irena herself heard complaints and grumbling as she accompanied the woman around.“I can't believe my eyes, Miss.” Irena moved closer. Her eyes continued to notice every detail of the clothes that hugged Evangeline's slender body. ‘You look so beautiful in this dress, Miss Eva,’ she praised sincerely. ”Ah... right. I forgot something. One moment.”I blinked in confusion. I hadn't even said a word, including my desire to protest Maximilian's ridiculous request. Unfortunately, I couldn't just leave. That man really played on my emotions.“What exactly am I doing here?” I grumbled. In this dressing room, surrounded by large mirrors, I saw my own reflection—so foreign in this dress. There were many standing displays with dresses of various colors. Not
POV RITAMaria sighed. My eyes fell on the tray of lunch that she had painstakingly made. I knew that Maria never complained about her job. It's just that food is a supply of energy for the body, isn't it? If it is ignored, how can the body carry out its usual activities?“How?” asked Susi, one of the maids on the second floor. She was only in charge of serving the room with the large, elegantly carved door—my room. Everyone knows I don't want to be disturbed.“She doesn't want to be touched at all. The mistress chose to sleep and I think she is already asleep in her dreams.”Susi groaned in frustration. “Mrs. Rita could get even sicker, Maria. You know that, right?”Maria nodded listlessly. ”Even to simply enjoy the fruit I have served, she doesn't want to. I don't know how to persuade Mrs. Rita anymore. I can't fool her for too long.”Susi squeezed her hands. Her eyes stared at Maria with tears in them. “Mrs. Rita must feel very lost.”Of course. Loss is so painful. Not only them, b
“Welcome to the club.”I'm not used to such an over-the-top welcome. Too much spotlight, too many expectations being directed at me. I haven't even agreed to anything Maximilian has offered. Please understand, anything. I'm reluctant to even just reread the contract.I don't want to be in a world that will show my face in public. My quiet life will be gone, replaced by the hustle and bustle of public attention. No more peaceful afternoons with a cup of tea. No more freedom to just shop in the supermarket without being haunted by camera flashes.Being Roderick's wife alone is exhausting enough dealing with the media. Especially if I become part of this world, where my life will continue to be scrutinized and judged.No.I can't even imagine it. What Maximilian said was not a trivial matter. Who doesn't know the models and public figures under the auspices of Trinity Fashion? They are not only famous, but also have a big influence in the entertainment and fashion industries.Including t
These eyes stared at the beautiful angelic girls sitting in front of me one by one. They looked so calm, with eyes that scrutinized my every move as if I were an interesting subject worth observing. I swallowed, an uncomfortable feeling running through my chest. Maximilian's request sounded completely ridiculous to me.“Look at the three of them. Imagine they are wearing the dresses that are now attached to your body. And give your assessment from my point of view, which I think is quite observant in judging color,” Maximilian said without hesitation, as if his request was so reasonable.I could only stare at him in disbelief. Since when did I become a fashion expert? I am not someone who has ever been involved in a world full of admiration and the demands of a busy schedule. Oh my God! If only I could refuse! But, unfortunately, the opportunity never came. I was even pushed out of the car that stopped in front of this luxury apartment.A girl immediately picked me up, claiming that s
I sat restlessly in the passenger seat of the red car that had returned smoothly without a hitch. A car so familiar, belonging to Maximilian Von Ziegler. However, when he drove me to this apartment before, it was not his beloved car that was used. I don't know when he exchanged it, and I don't want to know. There were too many things I was trying to avoid thinking about further.“How?” Max's voice broke the silence that had hung between us for ten minutes. I hadn't spoken a word since getting into his car, even refusing his invitation to just enjoy a cup of coffee. I knew this must be frustrating for him. What else could he offer me? I am not someone who easily accepts something, especially from someone like him. It felt so difficult for me to just nod and follow his invitation without thinking.“What do you mean?” I asked, not understanding the direction of the conversation.“Your day at Giselle's place? You've already met Harley and Ursula too, haven't you?”“I have,” I replied brie
Nothing changed in my life after that. Everything seemed normal as usual, but there was one thing that made me feel like I was stepping into a vast space. I no longer felt suffocated, and the weight that had been suffocating my chest seemed to be lifted. I entered the DnA Property building with a light step, accompanied by a whistle that showed my mood was at its best.Occasionally I returned the greetings of employees spread across several divisions. Most of them I didn't really know. However, because they were wearing DnA Property ID badges, I assumed they were part of my staff.I ignored some whispers that caught my attention as I made my way to the room on the twenty-fifth floor. Was there something wrong with my attitude this morning? I tried to remember. Ah... maybe it was because I had slightly lowered the cold expression that was usually carved on my face. Replacing it with a slight smile and a light greeting. However, is that such a strange thing? Shouldn't a boss greet his e
The days passed quickly. Practice after practice that Evangeline went through made her more confident and much calmer about her nervousness. She had tried various styles of clothing just to smooth her steps on the catwalk. Brina even deliberately created an outdoor area so that Evangeline would also be accustomed to facing all the bad possibilities that could happen during the show.Although Brina said it was very unlikely, there was no harm in preparing.“I don't think I need to worry too much,” Brina said as she handed over a bottle of mineral water. The last training session was over. A look of joy and relief was clearly visible on Evangeline's face.“I'm trying my best, Brina. Without you I am nothing.”Brina laughed. “Say that after all the events are over, Eva. This is just the beginning, there will be many stages to go through until you are safe.”Evangeline laughed. Enjoying the refreshing water as it moistened her throat. Some people were busy tidying up the rest of their tra
Evangeline took a deep breath as soon as Marguerite Langley's car pulled out of her garage. Her thoughts were suddenly full and fatigue was eating away at her remaining energy. “I didn't think Rick was really that crazy.”But just as she was about to step back into the house, her eyes caught sight of the red car she knew so well. As well as the figure getting out of it.“Am I interrupting?” he asked innocently. The intimidating glare and the undeniably commanding voice were gone. Evangeline recognized that tone as Max's annoying one.“If I said I was interrupting, you would have forced your way in.” Evangeline hissed angrily, then opened the gate again with a single push. “Come in. By the way, Mommy Rita brought you a cake. You'll like it.”“Your ex-in-law?”A slight grin formed on Evangeline's lips. ”I can't think of it that way. We had a good relationship long before my marriage.”“But can I enjoy the cake with a cup of coffee? You know, I've been stressed out this afternoon.”Evang
Evangeline took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Once again she made sure that the dress she was wearing was appropriate, that none of the accessories were loose, including the straps of her heels this time. The training session was coming to an end and she had to master the stage immediately. Brina said that Evangeline was making fewer and fewer mistakes.Brina herself was surprised that Evangeline was so quick to master what she was directing. Could it be because of the week Evangeline spent with the three noisy models? If she could bring about such drastic changes, maybe Brina would loosen up the training time a little. Three days had passed and Evangeline really amazed her. Oh, it wasn't just Brina who was amazed, but Nico too. Many angels can be taken from various camera angles, and as a model who already has a lot of experience, Evangeline is able to do it.“I'm ready,” said Evangeline after making sure everything was worn properly. Her confidence was always at its maximum limi
“Aren't you asleep yet, Giselle?“ asked Harvey, who, when he woke up, saw his friend on the balcony. Alone enjoying the night.“Ah, not sleepy yet.” Giselle turned and gave a smile, even though her hand immediately grasped her warm chocolate cup. A sign that she was surprised by Harvey's arrival. “Why did you wake up?”“Thirsty,“ Harvey replied, narrowing his eyes suspiciously. ‘Did something bother you?’ He chose to approach Giselle, who was still loyal to her position.“Nothing.” Giselle shook her head immediately, still displaying the best smile she had. Their work resumed on Monday. They didn't want their mood to be ruined because of what Giselle was holding in—even though... she couldn't bear to be silent. The girl chose to leave Harvey because she was sure that her best friend would not let her go easily. She didn't want to be asked many questions about what she was feeling. Really, it was so annoying.“You're not the kind of person who brags like that, Giselle. It takes a skill
Isadora put down her wine glass with a smile that wouldn't go away. Her eyes looked joyfully at the interlocutor who had just given her important information.“You can always count on me, Aunt Samantha.”The middle-aged woman smiled proudly. “I'd be much happier if you could count on me.”“Why should I refuse your help?” Isadora giggled. ‘You've always supported me for a long time, Auntie. How could I just forget about you?”Samantha waved her hands with a blushing face. ’I always felt that you were the most suitable wife for Roderick, not that burden of a woman. Why would my stupid niece just accept it?”The smile on Isadora's face vanished, replaced by a sad and sorrowful gaze. Her shoulders drooped weakly as if Samantha's words had really hurt her badly. “Rick said he did it reluctantly.”“You're right. It was all because of Marguerite's persuasion! That woman is just like Evangeline. Just a burden on the Langley family. Unfortunately, our grandfather, Kenneth Langley, really liked
Nothing was more enjoyable for Evangeline Rutherford as she stepped through the lobby of Giselle's unit. Her steps were not as fast as usual, her body felt crushed due to the intensive training schedule ahead of this weekend. But she still came, fulfilling her promise to make healthy snacks for her three friends. In the midst of fatigue that gnawed at her joints, Eva's lips remained thinly curved. None of the pain could match the warmth she felt because there was someone waiting for her arrival.Just yesterday she wore various dresses, one after another. Accessories with intricate details and heavy wrapped around her body. It is said that the training aims to improve balance when walking on the catwalk. But what she wore was not just any object. A crown, with strands of crystal as clear as dew, was placed on her head. A crown that Brina herself called an original work, made of Swarovski crystals, gold-plated and other precious gems.Imagine if I slipped, Eva thought at the time, not o
The floor-sweeping long dress studded with Swarovski crystals hugged Giselle's slender body perfectly—as if designed just for her. The cut of the dress depicted every curve of her body with deadly elegance. I knew that tonight, all the spotlight would be on her. Giselle was a star. And tonight, the stage belonged to her.I have witnessed countless similar scenes. But for some reason, every time she steps out in such a dazzling outfit, I am overcome with envy and admiration. She is too striking to ignore, and I know that Giselle's presence is a stinging surprise to everyone.“Are you sure this isn't an exaggeration?” she asked, fixing her hair in a neat bun, like a goddess from an ancient painting. ‘It's just a regular gala dinner, isn't it?”I—Evangeline Rutherford—smiled slightly. ’It may be just an ordinary dinner to you. But believe me, your presence will make it extraordinary.”She sighed softly, then clicked her tongue. “All right, let's go. I don't like to linger there.”A young
Actually, I never wanted to get back in Maximilian Von Ziegler's car. I refused many times, but he always managed to find a loophole to get me to sit in the passenger seat next to him. Including covert methods, almost resembling threats, regarding my performance in training sessions in the past few days. Even though I still clearly remember how Brina and Nico sincerely praised me. That I had crossed a line that I had previously been unable to cross. But still, I chose to remain silent. Refraining from the complaints that wanted so badly to come out of these lips—because in the end, this was the path I chose for myself. There was no turning back. I had already paved the road behind me. Besides, even if I turned back, the question of how I would support myself would always loom.“At the end of the road, there is a fairly popular bakery. Would you like to stop by?” Max asked, breaking the thick silence between us.This time, I preferred to silence my voice. Not because I was reluctant to
“Your work today was truly extraordinary, Giselle. All the photo shoots went perfectly and I think everyone involved in this project agrees that you are shining brighter than ever.”Giselle just chuckled lightly. She received a bottle of mineral water in her hands, which she immediately drank without hesitation. The midday heat was really scorching, burning the skin and leaving a thirst that never went away. Tiana, her loyal assistant, immediately came with a large umbrella, shading the model's head from the excruciating heat.I just observed from a distance. They praised her. As if everything was perfect. But behind the dazzling light of the camera flash, there was something that the outside spotlight couldn't digest. I knew her well enough to know that Giselle's smile didn't always mean happiness.“Thank you. You guys worked really hard today too. I feel very comfortable,” Giselle said with a big, warm smile while still keeping her distance. She is a star who knows how to shine, but
