OLIVIA

"I am coming over. As we speak, I am a few miles away from your apartment."

That was the text I received from Adrian in the early hours of the day.

As much as I enjoyed having him around, I still wasn't expecting him.

We had spoken for hours on the phone the previous night, and not once did he indicate that he was coming over.

"I guess it's too late now. I can't do anything to change his mind," I sighed.

Sending Adrian away was certainly not the best option. It would have been easier if he had notified me before booking a flight to Paris.

I had a quick bath, put on a decent outfit, and dashed to Kate's room.

Unlike me, who had just bathed, Kate was already dressed. It looked as though she had been awake all night.

"So, what's the occasion? Why are you dressed up already?" I asked Kate.

If I hadn’t known her for so long, I would have argued that she was going on a date with the president.

"Adrian texted me that he was coming over. I just figured it would be nicer to get dressed

OLIVIA"What happened, Olivia? I just heard you scream from inside," Adrian said, rushing to embrace me.His eyes darted around the living room, scanning for any sign of danger before he turned his attention back to me and grabbed my phone.“Kate called you? What did she say? Does this have anything to do with the screaming?”I didn’t even know where to start explaining to Adrian. I had a feeling he wouldn’t pay much attention, especially since Cyril was his rival."Rene is planning to kill Cyril and take over the company. Kate just called to inform me," I finally summoned the courage to say."What? That’s insane!" Adrian screamed at the top of his lungs. That was exactly how I had reacted when I first found out.I moved closer to Adrian and held him. "We need to stop Rene. She mustn't succeed."I suggested traveling back to New York to warn Cyril about the impending danger, but Adrian immediately objected. "No, that’s not going to happen. You can reach out to him over the phone. Send

OLIVIA“Now you’re missing the point, ma’am. No one is accusing you of causing Cyril’s accident. We just need you to assist us with the investigation,” the cop backtracked on his earlier statement. At first, I’d been terrified, convinced I was about to be arrested for something I knew nothing about.I glanced at Adrian, immediately noticing how furious he’d become. His clenched jaw and the tension in his shoulders spoke volumes.I tuned into his heartbeat, hearing how loud and fast it was—like a warning drum beating inside his chest.I placed a hand on his arm, silently urging him to calm down before things got out of control. “Don’t worry, I’ve got this. Don’t make it worse than it already is,” I murmured softly.Leaning forward, I addressed the cops in a calmer voice. “I’m sorry, officers, but I can’t help with your investigation. Like I said, this has nothing to do with me. I’ve been in Paris for weeks.”I kept my tone polite but firm.“If you’ll excuse me, I have other important m

ADRIANIt’s been over an hour since Olivia left with the cops to aid their investigation, and she still hasn’t returned. They’d assured me it wouldn’t take long—that it was just a quick interrogation—but now it’s dragging on endlessly. I should’ve known they were lying. This is all my fault.I should’ve seen this coming.I tried calling Olivia. Nothing. She wasn’t picking up. I sent her texts, but no response. My heart skipped a beat. Something was wrong. To make things worse, I didn’t even know which police station they’d taken her to. I’d been so overwhelmed that I’d forgotten to ask.“What am I going to do now?” I asked aloud, my voice echoing off the empty walls. “I can’t just sit here while Olivia might be in danger.”I racked my brain, desperate for a solution, but no matter how hard I thought, nothing useful came to mind.I lost count of how many times I’d paced around the living room, anxiously waiting for Olivia to call me back.“Now this shit is getting real. This shouldn’t

ADRIAN“I asked you a simple question, Rene. How the fuck did you get my number, and what do you want from me? I hate repeating myself, and that’s exactly what you’re making me do right now. You’re so dumb. How did Cyril even fall in love with you?” I shouted, my voice laced with disgust.I didn’t hold back. Every shred of self-control I had left vanished. If Rene had been standing next to me, I swear, I would’ve done something I’d regret.“Take it easy, Adrian,” Rene said, her tone infuriatingly smug. “You might want to be mindful of your tone. This is a telephone conversation, after all. You can’t do anything to hurt me, and we both know it.”She let out a wicked laugh that crawled under my skin, twisting the knife she’d already planted there. Then she threatened to end the call if I kept questioning her.I clenched my jaw and forced myself to stay calm. As much as I wanted to smash my phone against the wall, I realized there was more to gain by playing along.“I want you, Adrian. I

RENE“How did it go?” my mom asked as I ended the call with Adrian.I sighed, still gripping the phone tightly. “Honestly? I don’t know. He seemed madly in love with Olivia,” I admitted, my voice laced with frustration.I wasn’t convinced we were heading in the right direction. Adrian wasn’t as easy to manipulate as Cyril had been, and it was beginning to show.It was my mom’s idea to use Olivia as bait to get Adrian, and at first, it sounded like the perfect plan. After all, we’d heard plenty about Adrian’s family’s generational wealth. We figured it wouldn’t be a bad idea to take our slice of it.But now, it was starting to feel like one of the worst decisions I’d ever made.“Do you think we should involve Ghost in this?” my mother suggested, watching me carefully as I paced the room. She could tell I was struggling to figure out our next move.“Ghost?” I scoffed, rolling my eyes. “The same Ghost who couldn’t even eliminate Olivia after multiple attempts? Come on, Mom. I’m not convi

ADRIAN“Who was that on the phone? And why are you sweating like that?” Kate asked as she stepped closer, her sharp gaze fixed on me.“Oh, I’m sweating? I honestly had no idea,” I mumbled, wiping my face and realizing she was right. My skin was damp.I hesitated, unsure how to explain. I couldn’t summon the courage to tell her that Rene had her claws in me now. Kate wouldn’t believe me anyway—not when Rene had already manipulated Cyril.“Now you’re freaking me out,” Kate snapped, her voice tense. “Why aren’t you saying anything? First, you froze when you saw me walk in, and now you’re sweating under an air conditioner? Please, make it make sense to me.”She was fuming, and I’d never seen her this angry before. Clearly, I was testing her patience.“It’s Rene,” I admitted at last, my voice low.I stepped back, putting some distance between us. I didn’t want to see the expression on her face.“Rene?” Kate repeated, her brows knitting together in confusion.“But how is that possible? How

OLIVIAIt’s been over an hour since I went with the cops, and we still haven’t arrived at the station. This was becoming a major problem for me. I had a feeling that something was definitely wrong somewhere. To make matters worse, none of them paid attention to my words. To them, I didn’t even exist. The only thought crossing my mind was jumping out of the moving vehicle and escaping from what now seemed like an abduction. After a second thought, I realized how stupid the plan was. There was no guarantee I’d make it out alive after jumping outside.I kept my observations to myself while I searched for another way out.“What’s going on? Why isn’t anyone saying anything to me? And why is it taking forever to arrive at the station?” I raised the alarm after being previously ignored.“Stay focused. You’re asking too many questions. We’ll be there soon,” one of them finally responded. It ought to have sounded like a relief, but it didn’t. Instead, it made my blood pressure spike drasticall

ADRIANKate had been asking about the station Olivia was taken to for over five minutes, and I still hadn’t been able to respond. Even in a thousand years, I’d probably still be clueless.I was behaving ridiculously in front of her. For the first time in my life, I didn’t trust myself.“I’m not sure how to say this to you. To be honest, I—” I paused, suddenly at a loss for words, as though I’d forgotten how to speak.“You what?” Kate snapped, grabbing my shirt like she wanted to rip it apart.“Adrian, say something! This isn’t you. When did you become so dull? I still have no idea what’s going on. If we were living in ancient times, I’d swear you sold Olivia into slavery,” she said, throwing yet another accusation at me—one even more serious than the last.If a third party overheard this, I’d probably spend the rest of my life in prison for human trafficking.I tried to calm her down, but my words fell flat.I was speechless, hopeless, and defenseless against her rage.“I thought you

OLIVIA"Stay calm, ma'am. You're not helping matters," Officer Julian called me to order.I ignored him, saying, "Don't you dare tell me to stay calm. Didn't you hear what he said? He accused me of something I know nothing about. Now that's insane.""You were the target. We were paid by someone to kill you," the criminal finally confessed. His confession sent tiny shivers down my spine. I lost some brain cells and stood up from where I was.I now know what it feels like to be agitated."Who sent you? Start talking now," I moved a step closer to the criminal.Seeing how close I was, Adrian rushed to pull me back. "Don't do this. Let him speak. I understand how you feel right now, but this isn't the way out."I stood back. I forced myself to stay calm, but deep inside, I was a burning furnace.I was being consumed by the desire to kill the criminal even before he was done with the confession."Some lady called Rene. She gave us your photo and asked us to kill you," the criminal confesse

OLIVIAAfter a failed attempt to kill me, the gunmen abandoned one of their members who had no gun in his possession. As he tried to escape, Adrian pounced on him and struck a powerful punch that tossed the masked man to the ground. As though that weren't enough, Adrian continued to punch the masked man until the police arrived at the scene and arrested him. After the arrest, we all rushed to meet Uncle Dante, who was in a pool of blood, struggling to stay alive. His eyes were slowly shutting down as we got to him."Don't leave me, Uncle. Please stay back," Adrian cried as he rested Uncle Dante's head on his lap. That was my first time seeing Adrian cry. As I tried to console him, I fought back my tears."Please take care of Olivia. She's got a heart of gold. Don't let her slip away from your palms." Those were Uncle Dante's last words before he passed away. All efforts to revive him proved abortive. He must have suffered severe internal bleeding as a result of the injury sustained f

OLIVIA“Damn! This party is the bomb. See what we've been missing all along,” Kate told me at the party. She seemed to be having fun.She wasn't far from the truth.I can't recall the last time she attended a party of such magnitude.Cyril is such a joy killer. The son of a bitch is deprived of a life like this due to his insecurity.“I am glad you're having fun. But don't get too drunk. We still got work for tomorrow,” I reminded Kate.Adrian joined us some minutes later, shortly after I saw him with Uncle Dante.“I hope you're having fun already?” he teased Kate.“More than fun, Adrian. You've got no idea what this means to me. If Olivia doesn't get married to you, I will,” Kate joked as she continued sipping her vodka. Then she stormed out to allow Adrian and me to have some moments of privacy alone.“My uncle wants to see us. He asked me to bring you to his table,” Adrian said.“Shall we?” He stretched his hand forward to hold mine.“Of course. Why not?” I held his hand.As we wal

OLIVIA Anxiety spread from my face and traveled down to my lungs' region as I stood at the prosecuting area, waiting for the judge to pass the final verdict regarding the allegations against me of being responsible for Cyril's condition.I lost count of how many times the case has been adjourned. I've lost all hopes of getting a favorable ruling. Currently, the only thing left inside of me is emptiness and fright. I might as well confess to the crimes I never committed just to be free from this dungeon of calamity and frustration.I looked behind me and saw Kate resting on the chest of Adrian. Poor girl! She's been through a lot this period. And she isn't even the one accused falsely.I drifted my attention back to the judge to avoid missing out on what she had a say.“So here's my verdict,” the judge said before she took a deep pause to put on his glasses. I was yearning for her to be done talking. Her silent treatment keeps raising my blood pressure. From the look of things, I

OLIVIAMy legs quivered as I stepped outside with Adrian. They suddenly felt too heavy to move, as if some unseen force was dragging me back. The moment Kate saw me approaching the car, she rushed forward and embraced me. I fought back my tears. She thought the kidnapping had broken me. She had no idea it was something else entirely.Adrian looked equally disturbed. Just like me, he wasn’t happy. Sadness was written all over his face. That was when Kate sensed something was wrong. She pulled away from my arms and turned to Adrian. “Can you please explain what's going on? I know this isn’t about the kidnapping, so don’t lie to me.”After Adrian narrated everything to her, Kate lost her composure and fumed. “What the fuck? That ain’t true! Olivia had nothing to do with what happened to Cyril. They barely even spoke because I was there to kick him out!”As much as I appreciated her defending me, I wished she had done it back in Lily’s office—to prove my innocence where it mattered.“Now

OLIVIA“What did you just say? Rene did what?” I lost my cool and jumped from my seat.It took the joint efforts of Adrian and the detective to calm me down.“Don't tell me to calm down! Didn't you hear what she said?” I blasted Adrian.I expected him to take my side—or at the very least, caution Lily about the false accusations thrown at me.“Ranting won't solve anything. We need to take this case lightly,” Adrian said to me.His words somehow calmed my nerves. But deep down, I was burning with curiosity. Why would Rene point fingers at me when I hadn’t even been in New York at the time of the incident?“Over to you, Detective. Why would Rene file a report against Olivia? Olivia hasn’t been to New York in recent times,” Adrian questioned Lily. For the first time in a long while, I was genuinely proud of him. That was the move I had hoped for.“Just a moment, please,” Lily said, shuffling through the files on her desk.“Oh, yes. I found this one.” She handed the file over to us and as

OLIVIAI still can't wrap my head around what happened in the last couple of hours. It still seems like a dream to me. I never, for once, imagined that I was going to survive the assassination attempt.I had already accepted my fate—that I was going to be shot dead in the head with reckless abandon. Suddenly, Kate and Adrian showed up when I least expected it.“Hey, Olivia,” I heard a voice calling my name. I disregarded the voice since I couldn't recognize it.I drifted back into my thinking mode until I saw a hand wave across my face.Looking next to me, I discovered that it was Adrian. Apparently, he'd been trying to get my attention, but I seemed not to be bothered.I wasn't even conscious of my surroundings anymore.“What's running through your mind this time? Do you want to see the Detective?” Adrian asked me while we stood next to the car.“Nah! That won't be necessary. I'd rather wait for her to summon me to the interrogation room. Want to take this one step at a time,” I told

ADRIANDetective Lily finally led us to the wood where Olivia was tied up around a tree like a sacrificial lamb.Lily wasn't wrong when she told us that she had been to the woods before to apprehend some criminals.Olivia wasn't alone in the woods. She's got two hefty men standing right in front of her. From a distance, I could tell that they were cold-blooded murderers.Right in front of her was a man pointing a gun to her head while she cried her eyes out.“Did you see that? He's trying to shoot her.We have got to save her now.We can't let that son of a bitch accomplish his mission,” I called the attention of Lily.At that point, I was tempted to snatch the gun from her and shoot the assassins from close range.“I saw them!I'm just waiting for the perfect time to strike, so I suggest you shut the fuck up,” Lily whispered, yet it still managed to get on my thick skin.I drifted my gaze at Kate, hoping that she was going to take sides with me. I was wrong. From the look on her face

ADRIAN"Stop the damn car right away! I know what I heard. Would I be joking about something like this when I know what's at stake?" Kate screamed at me.That was the moment I knew it wasn’t a joke, just like I had thought.I stayed calm to observe the situation. Suddenly, I heard Olivia screaming. "Please don’t kill me! I don’t want to die. Somebody save me! I don’t deserve any of this. I am ready to give up an outrageous fee for my freedom!"At that moment, I felt like punching myself in the face for doubting Kate when she initially revealed what she had heard."Do you believe me now? Why don't you apologize for doubting me?" Kate demanded.I snapped. "Get down. We need to go inform the cops about our discovery."As Kate and I stepped outside the vehicle, we saw a female cop approaching our direction. It was obvious that she had something important to say to us."I was about to meet you. What's your name again?" the female cop asked.I glanced at Kate, waiting for her to respond, bu
