(Cass)

I tap my fingers against the counter, waiting as the line rings. Winona picks up on the third ring, her voice instantly wary.

“What happened?”

I huff, shifting my weight as I glance around the industrial kitchen. “Why do you assume something happened?”

“Because we only spoke the other day. Or maybe you just miss me that much.”

“Firstly, I do miss you.” I exhale, lowering my voice. “Secondly, I think I’m done in this kitchen, Winona.”

Silence. Then, “done? As in ‘I had a bad shift’ done or ‘I’m about to throw a middle finger at my contract and vanish’ done?”

I scrape my thumbnail against the gleaming stainless-steel counter. “The second, but I won’t just leave. I don’t think this is for me.”

She sighs. “Cass, you’re still under protection. If you up and leave, that’s going to be a problem. Jayden, Viktor, the entire estate security team, they’re not going to let you just walk.”

“I don’t care anymore,” I mutter. “I want my life back. I didn’t come here to play the estate’s charit

Thank you for another chapter & look I’m happy for Cass BUT are we just skipping over Jayden’s lunch with Astrid & lie to Winona? There needs to be a solution or at least a conversation with them!! It’s not making sense at this point in time honestly & it’s beyond frustrating to keep reading.

(Winona) My phone vibrates against the kitchen counter.Jayden’s name flashes on the screen. Not the family call, just him. I hesitate for a second before picking up. “Hey. I hope you’re still going to talk to the kids later…” His voice is low, a little tired. “Sure am. Just wanted to check in after your message. There’s something important behind that ‘miss you’ isn’t there?” Something in me softens at that. “It’s so good to hear your voice.” “You’ve been on my mind too. Okay, spill the tea.” I sit down on the stool at the island. “Lisa and I had a fight Sunday night.” Jayden is quiet for a beat. “Yeah?” I rub my temple. “It was bad. She wasn’t herself and I’m sure she never meant all she said… but she finally told me what she’s been hiding. Well, I guessed and asked her.” Jayden doesn’t rush me, just waits. I let out a slow breath. “She’s pregnant.” The silence on the line is absolute. Then, “Lisa?” “Yeah.” Jayden exhales sharply. “Wow.” “That’s not even the big part.”

(Lisa)Logan is waiting near my office when I walk in, coffee cup in hand. “Good morning.”“Is it?”I don’t even make it to my desk before he speaks again. “How are you?” he shuts the door behind him.I let out a sharp exhale. “If you mean, did I tell Winona yet? The answer is yes.”Logan nods, watching me carefully. “And?”I drop my bag onto my desk, resisting the urge to rub at the tension in my neck. “And it went as well as you’d expect.”“Which is?”I let out a humorless laugh. “Pretty shit. She took it like Winona takes everything—with too much feeling and too much hope. And I gave her bith barrels because I’m pissed at the world silently judging me.”“Or pissed at yourself for judging yourself.”“Whatever.”Logan doesn’t know me well enough to know when to stop. “She wants you to wait and see if you’ll change your mind.”“Obviously.” I grab a water bottle from my fridge and eye all the different packaged drinks stocked in there. “I don’t need all this crap in my fridge. (Jayden)I sit in my office, staring at my computer. Winona’s last message on my mind. We’re good. We’re not. I know deep down she doesn’t mean that right now. But this is what happens when billion-dollar business empires get involved. Hard choices have to be made and they are not always the romantic ones.Even having enough money to go do whatever the hell we want doesn’t mean we get to do that… far from it. Winona and I have both made a commitment to these respective businesses and every single employee in them.We can’t just walk away when things get tough. Like a marriage. But I know I need to fix this little bleed before it becomes a gaping wound. She’s in an emotionally fragile state now. I know that. Emotions make things messy.I’ve called Viktor in because he is the logical, call-me-on-my-shit attitude I need right now. At this point I’m not sure that downing tools and heading back to Winona is the right thing to do. But I can’t ignore that we are in crisis.I love her. I

I wanted to catch you before I go to work.”“I’ll never get used to you saying you’re going to work.”“You won’t have to. I’m leaving.”“The charities?”“The charities, the city. The state. Maybe even the country.”I blink, caught off guard. “Leave?”“There’s nothing left for me here, Winona.” Her voice is steadier now, almost eerily calm. “I don’t want to run the charities. I don’t want to be a mom.”My stomach twists. “Lisa, you don’t have to leave.”“I do. I can’t hide this forever. It will be endless comments and questions. (Cass)I stretch, rolling my shoulders as I pull my jeans on. Gabriel is still sprawled across the bed. His arms are folded behind his head. He has no shame in his naked body.No reason why he should. He’s magnificent. He’s also watching me with that smug expression that makes me want to slap and kiss him at the same time. “You’re in a hurry?” he asks as I finish getting dressed.“I have things to do before my shift.” He raises a brow. “Oh yeah? Anything more interesting than what we just did?” “That was a tension release. Chef Valois wants a new plant-based soup.” A knock at the door makes me freeze. Gabriel groans. “Tell me that’s room service. I’m starving.” I pick up a pillow and throw it at his face. “It must be Jayden. Stay put.” He shrugs.Another knock. Louder this time. Gabriel pushes off the bed, already heading for the door. “Don’t—” But he doesn’t stop. He just keeps going.“Gabriel! (Winona)Viktor stands with his hands by his side while Jayden finishes up his announcement.I watch on, proud of them both. Not only staunch in business but as friends.“I’ll still be involved on a higher level, but day-to-day, Viktor’s your guy,” Jayden says, firm and confident. “Effective immediately, he’s the new CEO of Nexus Global.”There’s a brief pause before the quiet, respectful claps ripple through the room.Viktor just nods. “Thank you,” he says. No long speech. No dramatic reaction. Just two words. Classic Viktor.Jayden glances my way and walks over.“Proud of him,” I say quietly. “And of you.”“He’s ready,” Jayden replies. “Hell, he’s been ready for a while now. He taught me almost everything I know about Nexus Global.”Viktor lingers by the window, posture steady. Astrid steps up beside him, saying something low. He replies with a brief nod and the smallest of smirks.Jayden leans into me and murmurs, “did you see that?”I arch an eyebrow. “The nod or the smirk?”“Both

(Winona)I see the moment his eyes catch mine in the window behind Astrid. He blinks like he’s seeing a ghost. Too late. I’m already across the restaurant floor, my heels pounding each step out in deliberate warning, the sound sharp against the quiet hum of late-night conversations. Heads turn. I don’t care. His face shifts from confusion to panic as I advance—his mouth parting slightly, eyes darting to Astrid like he’s trying to figure out if he’s imagining this. He’s not. I’m here. I saw everything.I saw the kiss. I saw the closeness after. The lingering smiles, the laughter, and the way Astrid’s hand stayed on his like they were sharing secrets. Like she belongs to him. You don’t need sound to understand body language. That kiss wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t a friendly peck on the cheek. It was enough for me to wonder if they’ve been playing me for a fool for weeks. Maybe months.Jayden stands just as I reach the table, knocking his chair back in a clumsy scrape. Astrid rema

You have quite the work drive, Jayden. Gus was right to leave Nexus in your hands.”“Not one of you thought that at first. You all hated me. Especially Hugo. I think he still might, actually.”“Oh, you are not so bad, after all.”We clink glasses. The wine’s sharp, dry—like her. The restaurant is dim, ambient, tucked just off the canal. Astrid insisted it was the best late-night spot in Brussels. So far, I can’t argue. The food was incredible, the service seamless, and the company? Easy. A little too easy. This dinner has gone longer than I expected. I expected an answer from Winona to my text. But it hasn’t come. The conversation just flowed so effortlessly tonight. No drama. (Winona)It’s nearly 1 a.m. when I step off the jet into the crisp Brussels air. I haven’t slept. I haven’t eaten properly. My thoughts have been chewing on each other for nine hours straight.I hear my phone notification, but I see Cass and I’m so damn happy. She’s about to launch the rest of her life and I’m excited for her.“It’s so good to see you.” I say as I run towards her and give her a hug.“You look like hell,” she says as she grins and hugs me back.“Oh, thanks for the compliment. You look like death yourself.”“Just finished a12 hour shift, what’s your excuse?”We walk out to the private parking area. Having a private jet is so convenient.“I can only blame stress and paranoia,” I tell her as we put my case in the back seat and get into her car.“Paranoia?”“Yes, about where Jayden and I stand in out marriage lately. (Jayden)It’s nearly ten. The office is quiet, except for the soft hum of fluorescent lights above the boardroom. Astrid and I have been going through projections for Q3. Numbers, strategies, deadlines. All things that used to matter more than they do right now. My family call is bothering me. It’s not that Winona had a sudden business trip, that’s expected, it’s just the way we interact lately. Going through the motions. Not speaking up on how we feel in case it triggers an argument. I’m as much to blame.“You missed an adjustment here,” she says, tapping the edge of my laptop.“I didn’t miss it,” I say, not looking up. “I just didn’t apply it yet.”She raises an eyebrow. She knows I’m distracted. I’ve worked with her long enough to recognize the look that says I’m full of shit.“You want my input or just someone to nod along while you pretend to work?” she asks.I lean back in my chair. “You always cut right through it, don’t you?”“Of course.”She’s right.
