The hotel lobby is warm and welcoming, its soft lighting a balm after the long flight. The kids buzz with excitement as they spot a familiar face waiting for us by the concierge desk.

“Nanny Anne!” Abby squeals, bolting toward her. Puppy dangles from one hand.

Anne crouches down, her arms open wide. “There’s my little ones!”

Abby crashes into her, followed closely by Bobby and Sarah. They hug tightly. Even Henry lets out a delighted squeal from Lisa’s arms, his little legs kicking in excitement.

Anne looks up at me, her face beaming. “Oh, Winona. It’s so good to see you all safe.”

“It’s good to see you too,” I say, my voice thick with relief. The worry I’ve been carrying since we left Brussels eases slightly. Anne has always been our rock, and knowing she’ll be here for the next few days makes everything feel a bit more manageable.

Lisa hands Henry over to Anne, who hugs him close. “Look at you, Henry. You’ve grown so much!”

“Can you believe it?” Lisa says with a laugh. “He’s

(Judy)I’ve spent all day with Jayden at Nexus London offices today. After Winona leaving yesterday, and celebratory drinks with Jayden last night, I’m hopeful. Viktor not being here is a blessing. I can’t make a move with him always watching. This Grayson investigation is almost wrapped up and Jayden will relaunch Nexus London under a new banner. He’s done well. I’m very proud of him. Do I trust him? Probably not.But then, I had nothing to do with who she slept with and Lance turning up in Brussels unannounced. All I did was get the photos to Jayden. He deserves to know the truth. It’s not fair they played him like a fool like that. It’s a bit too soon to safely say I have Jayden back. But I’m certainly closer than I was with a no-contact order. Now I only need my grandchildren, after-all they are heirs to Nexus Global and they will need to be prepped for that role.Jayden needs more time to really be back under my wing again. I’m not sure if he and Winona are really separated, but

(Cass)It’s fine. Really.I mean, they’re paying me double the normal chef rate to do this, and honestly, after everything I’ve been through, I am lucky to be here. But as I dump another stack into the industrial washer and catch my reflection in the steel, I can’t help but feel I’m clutching at straws.A letter doesn’t mean instant success, I have a long road to get there.By the time the shift ends, my arms ache, and my stomach growls so loudly it’s probably scaring the mice away. The head chef mutters something about “grit” and “paying dues” when he finally waves me off for the night. They are all butt-hurt over me getting paid more than half of them.Whatever. I’ve always been good at keeping my head down and proving people wrong. The night air hits me like a slap as I step out of the estate’s main building. The path to the cottage is dark, and my legs feel like lead with every step. All I want is to collapse on the couch, shove some food in my face, and sleep for a year. But the

(Cass)I jolt awake to the sound of the front door slamming open. Damn I must have dozed off on the sofa. What the fuck?! Flashbacks of being kidnapped hit me and panic rises.Have they found me?My heart leaps into my throat, and I grab the closest thing to me—a lamp. My brain is too groggy to process anything logical. I’m not going without a fight this time. Although I’m not drugged either.“Who the hell—” “It’s me,” Viktor’s voice cuts through the darkness, calm and even. I lower the lamp, scowling as I flip on the bedside light. “What the actual fuck, Viktor? You don’t knock? You just break into people’s homes now?” He stands in the doorway of the living room, completely unbothered, his broad frame blocking most of the light from the hall. “It’s urgent. Get up. Now.” I blink, still half-asleep. “Excuse me? What gives you the right to barge in here like—” “Cass,” he interrupts, his tone clipped. “This isn’t about you. There’s been a shooting in London. Lance and Judy are invo

(Winona)I sit bolt upright in bed, my phone dragging me out of my grogginess. I see the number. It’s Jayden. Video call request. Why is he video calling me? We always text late at night and I’d dozed off after we’d text earlier.“Jayden?” My voice trembles as I connect the call. “What’s wrong?” “There’s been a shooting,” he says, his tone clipped but strained. His words come out fast, like he’s trying to make sense of them as he says them. “Lance and... Judy. Security called me. I don’t know all the details yet.” I can see he’s on the move.I cover my mouth, the air rushing out of my lungs. “Oh my God. Are they— I mean…” “Security said it’s bad, Lance is…gone…” he cuts in, his voice tightening. “I hung up to call you, but I’m on my way there now. It’s about ten minutes from my hotel.” The sight of him, pale and shaken, grips me with fear. “Jayden, you shouldn’t be alone for this. Let me—” “No,” he interrupts firmly. “Viktor and Cass are on their way. I’ll be fine. I have to go a

(Jayden)The flashing lights of ambulances and police cars light up the hotel’s entrance as I run the last few of the distance. My stomach churns, the bile rising in my throat as I close in on the foyer. This can’t be real. It doesn’t feel real.I enter the elevator and take what feels like the slowest ride in the world up to the top floor. My mind is full of everything. Mother, Lance. I know she did wrong, so much wrong. But she was still my mother. She loved me. I could never fault her on that.Outside the elevator now, I march towards the officers outside the open suite door.I try to push past the uniformed officers at the door, my voice sharp and demanding. “I’m Jayden Brennan. That’s my mother in there. Let me through.” Two of them grab me by the upper arms.Another officer steps forward, raising a hand to block me. “Sir, we can’t—” “It’s my mother! Do you understand?” My voice cracks with desperation. “Let me through now!” I yell, trying to get free.“Let him through,” A tal

(Winona)Jayden’s voice trembles through the phone. “They’re here.”“Viktor and Cass?” I ask, trying to steady my own voice.“Yeah.” His tone is flat, exhausted. “They just arrived. The detective’s here too.”“Let them help, Jayden,” I say softly. “You don’t have to do this by yourself.”“It doesn’t feel real, Winona. Lance didn’t even... warn me. He didn’t give me a chance to stop him. I didn’t want to discuss it with him, I didn't want to forgive him, but I didn’t want this…”“It’s not your fault,” I say firmly, though my own heart aches. “You couldn’t have known.”The sound of muffled footsteps grows louder, and then a new voice cuts in, Cass’s, calm and strong. “Winona, it’s me. Jayden, the detective would like a few words.”“Cass.” Relief washes over me. “You’re there. Thank God.”“I’ve got him,” she says, her voice resolute. “You take care of yourself and Lisa. (Winona)It’s been hours since Lisa shut herself in her bedroomI knock softly. “Lisa? It’s me.”No answer.I crack the door open, peeking inside. The room is dim, lit only by the faint glow of her bedside lamp. She’s curled up on the bed, facing the wall, her body still.“Lisa,” I say softly, sitting down on the edge of the bed. “Can I get you a tea, or coffee?”Her voice comes out muffled, raw. “I can’t, Winona. Not now.”She turns her head slightly, her eyes red and swollen. “He didn’t even let me help him. Those last few days…were so perfect, why couldn’t he see how perfect they were?”I reach out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Lance loved you. I know he did. But we know the pain he always carried.”She shakes her head violently. “If he loved me, he wouldn’t have done this! He wouldn’t have left me like this.”Her words dissolve into sobs, and I gather her into my arms. She clings to me, her grief pouring out unchecked. “I know,” I whisper. “I know.”For what feels lik

(Jayden)It’s been hours since I walked in on that horror scene, but my mind is still running on adrenaline. The detectives have been and gone, ruling it a straightforward case of murder-suicide.I’m not sure what to feel about that—relief that it’s simple enough to close quickly, or anger that they’ve already written off Lance’s actions and the death of my mother with such cold efficiency. I push those thoughts aside. There are practical things to handle, and that’s where I focus. Emotions can wait. I sit at the desk in my suite, surrounded by a chaos of papers and my phone. Viktor is dealing with much of it and I know he’s going to contact Gus. Cass sits on the arm of the couch, her arms crossed, watching me like a hawk. I dial my lawyer, leaning back in the chair as I press the phone to my ear. The familiar voice on the other end picks up after a few rings. I know this will have hits all the media outlets by now but I refuse to watch any of it.“Jayden, how can I help?” I keep

I can’t move forward if I don’t hear him out.” She hands the drive to Jayden.Jayden leans forward and plugs the drive in. The screen flickers. And then there he is.Lance. Black eye blooming from Jayden’s attack over hall pass week, bruised knuckles, the same crooked grin he always wore.“Lisa,” he says, “I’m so sorry. I wish this could have been different.”I glance at her. She flinches but doesn’t look away.He shakes his head. “No big poetic intro. No music. No tragic montage. (Winona)Viktor stands with his hands by his side while Jayden finishes up his announcement.I watch on, proud of them both. Not only staunch in business but as friends.“I’ll still be involved on a higher level, but day-to-day, Viktor’s your guy,” Jayden says, firm and confident. “Effective immediately, he’s the new CEO of Nexus Global.”There’s a brief pause before the quiet, respectful claps ripple through the room.Viktor just nods. “Thank you,” he says. No long speech. No dramatic reaction. Just two words. Classic Viktor.Jayden glances my way and walks over.“Proud of him,” I say quietly. “And of you.”“He’s ready,” Jayden replies. “Hell, he’s been ready for a while now. He taught me almost everything I know about Nexus Global.”Viktor lingers by the window, posture steady. Astrid steps up beside him, saying something low. (Winona)I see the moment his eyes catch mine in the window behind Astrid. He blinks like he’s seeing a ghost. Too late. I’m already across the restaurant floor, my heels pounding each step out in deliberate warning, the sound sharp against the quiet hum of late-night conversations. Heads turn. I don’t care. His face shifts from confusion to panic as I advance—his mouth parting slightly, eyes darting to Astrid like he’s trying to figure out if he’s imagining this. He’s not. I’m here. I saw everything.I saw the kiss. I saw the closeness after. The lingering smiles, the laughter, and the way Astrid’s hand stayed on his like they were sharing secrets. Like she belongs to him. You don’t need sound to understand body language. That kiss wasn’t an accident. It wasn’t a friendly peck on the cheek. It was enough for me to wonder if they’ve been playing me for a fool for weeks. Maybe months.Jayden stands just as I reach the table, knocking his chair back in a clumsy scrape. Astrid rema

(Jayden)Astrid raises her glass, the candlelight catching the rim. “To surviving another quarter without firing anyone major.”“To the rest of us surviving the grueling schedule of the Ice Queen herself.”“You did okay.”“Just okay?”“Better than okay. You have quite the work drive, Jayden. Gus was right to leave Nexus in your hands.”“Not one of you thought that at first. You all hated me. Especially Hugo. I think he still might, actually.”“Oh, you are not so bad, after all.”We clink glasses. The wine’s sharp, dry—like her. The restaurant is dim, ambient, tucked just off the canal. Astrid insisted it was the best late-night spot in Brussels. So far, I can’t argue. The food was incredible, the service seamless, and the company? Easy. A little too easy. This dinner has gone longer than I expected. I expected an answer from Winona to my text. But it hasn’t come. The conversation just flowed so effortlessly tonight. No drama. No awkward silences. No carefully chosen words. Astrid, wh

(Winona)It’s nearly 1 a.m. when I step off the jet into the crisp Brussels air. I haven’t slept. I haven’t eaten properly. My thoughts have been chewing on each other for nine hours straight.I hear my phone notification, but I see Cass and I’m so damn happy. She’s about to launch the rest of her life and I’m excited for her.“It’s so good to see you.” I say as I run towards her and give her a hug.“You look like hell,” she says as she grins and hugs me back.“Oh, thanks for the compliment. You look like death yourself.”“Just finished a12 hour shift, what’s your excuse?”We walk out to the private parking area. Having a private jet is so convenient.“I can only blame stress and paranoia,” I tell her as we put my case in the back seat and get into her car.“Paranoia?”“Yes, about where Jayden and I stand in out marriage lately. I’m not sure I’m what makes him happy. All we do is fight, it seems.”“Okay… ah, so me telling him you’d have been better off never meeting him probably didn’

(Jayden)It’s nearly ten. The office is quiet, except for the soft hum of fluorescent lights above the boardroom. Astrid and I have been going through projections for Q3. Numbers, strategies, deadlines. All things that used to matter more than they do right now. My family call is bothering me. It’s not that Winona had a sudden business trip, that’s expected, it’s just the way we interact lately. Going through the motions. Not speaking up on how we feel in case it triggers an argument. I’m as much to blame.“You missed an adjustment here,” she says, tapping the edge of my laptop.“I didn’t miss it,” I say, not looking up. “I just didn’t apply it yet.”She raises an eyebrow. She knows I’m distracted. I’ve worked with her long enough to recognize the look that says I’m full of shit.“You want my input or just someone to nod along while you pretend to work?” she asks.I lean back in my chair. “You always cut right through it, don’t you?”“Of course.”She’s right.
