Cassandra’s POV

When I arrived back at Dillon’s, I was surprised to see Stella’s car parked out front. I rushed into the house and found both Stella and Dillon in the kitchen.

“What are you doing here?” I asked Stella. My mind immediately went to work. Was something wrong? Had another company released our designs? Had someone broken into our office again?

But Stella smiled sheepishly and held up a massive suitcase.

“I need help,” she said. Dillon was standing at the counter, pounding a chicken breast with a giant mallet.

“Help with what?” I asked, eyeing the suitcase.

“I can’t decide what dresses to bring…” she paused for effect … “on OUR. CRUISE!” she squealed.

“What?” I asked. “Do you mean…you’re coming? On the cruise with us?” I whipped my head towards Dillon. “Did you know about this?” I asked.

Dillon laughed as he pounded the chicken. “Yup,” he said. “But I was sworn to secrecy.”

“Stella, this is amazing,” I replied. “We’re gonna have the BEST time ever!

“I know, right?” she said,

Cassandra’s POV The next few days flew by as I packed for the cruise. I wasn’t nearly as picky as Stella when it came to packing, but I was careful to bring an assortment of clothes. There was a formal dining room on the cruise ship that required appropriate ‘formal’ wear, so I made sure I packed a few gowns. Then there was the pool, so I made sure I tossed in a couple bathing suits and cute little bathing suit cover ups. The cruise ship also had a theatre and a casino, both of which we planned to visit, so I packed some fun casual wear. I also tossed in some exercise wear for good measure, just in case, as well as plenty of sunscreen. The cruise was a short one, just two nights. But it was a one-way cruise to the Bahamas, and we were staying there for an extra couple days at a beachfront resort. All in, we’d be gone for less than a week, which wasn’t that long. I was really looking forward to just getting away though, even if it was for a short amount of time.I stayed at Dillon’s ri

Cassandra’s POVI felt like a kid in a candy store as we walked around the cruise ship. It was so big and so elegant, far better than anything I could have imagined. We found our rooms, and I was shocked to see that Dillon had arranged suites for us. I was expecting a small, cramped interior room, which honestly, I’d been a bit worried about since I had such a deep-rooted case of claustrophobia. But our suite didn’t feel small in the slightest. There was a bedroom with two queen beds and more than enough for both of us. I ran my hand over the decadent duvet cover and opened one of the mahogany dresser drawers.“Cass, come see the bathroom,” Stella called to me. I went and peeked in. It was white marble, with a glass shower and two sinks. I’d seen pictures of cruise ship rooms before and they looked nothing like this. This was….extravagant.We both walked out in the main room and gasped at the same time. The main room had a little sitting area with a small couch and a table, as well as

Cassandra’s POV “Who?” I asked. Stella dragged a chair over to the table I was sitting at. Her cheeks were flushed from excitement.“Wellll,” she said, dragging out the suspense. “We were just leaving the buffet, which, by the way, is absolutely fabulous,” she started. “Like seriously, sea food for days. I think Cam ate his weight in crab legs.”“Get to the point,” I interrupted her. She’d just come up here and interrupted my cat nap with, what was apparently, exciting news. I didn’t need a diatribe on how fabulous the buffet was. I wanted to know who she saw!!!“Okay, okay,” she chuckled. “Sometimes I forget that patience is not exactly your strong suit. So, we were leaving the buffet, and I run into…” Again, she paused.“Just TELL ME!” I urged.“Lucinda Starke!” she blurted out.“What?” I gasped. “As in THE Lucinda Starke?”“One and the same,” Stella nodded enthusiastically.I couldn’t believe it! Lucinda Starke was a famous Hollywood actress. She’d just starred in a box office hit

Cassandra’s POVI glanced at Stella. Her eyebrows were furrowed in a deep frown. I knew how she felt. I never, in a million years, thought we’d see Ellie on this cruise. And just when everything had been going so well!“Lucinda Starke has no reason to just be polite, as you pointed out, Ellie,” Stella snapped. “If she says she wants Hot House Flower to design a dress for her for a red carpet event, then I’m sure she’ll follow through.”Ellie rolled her eyes and scoffed. “She’s a public figure,” Ellie said. “Of course she’s polite. She has a hundred different designers at her fingertips. Famous ones. Why would she choose your company?”My blood boiled as I stood there, looking at Ellie. She was wearing a gorgeous bathing suit cover up and her hair fell over her shoulders in loose waves. I glanced around to see if she was with Jordyn, but I didn’t see him. How was this possible? What were the chances that she and Jordyn had chosen the same exact cruise as us? I was starting to feel like

Cassandra’s POVLucinda Starke stood before us, a bemused smile on her face. Her mere presence had rendered us all speechless, which was a rare event for Ellie. Usually, that woman never shut up.“I don’t mean to interrupt, and I apologize if I’m intruding, but I was standing over there and I thought I heard my name.” She turned to Stella. “Stella, so nice to see you again. I’m actually very happy I ran into you. After our recent conversation, I got to thinking. I have some ideas for a gown I’d like to run by you? I’d love your input. It’s for the red carpet premiere of my latest movie, so it has to be dazzling.”Lucinda flashed Stella a beautiful smile. I was stunned. I couldn’t believe I was standing in front of Lucinda Starke! And just like Stella had said, she was wearing MY design. Stella’s description of Lucinda in my dress hadn’t done her justice. She looked fabulous, perfect, gorgeous beyond words. Seeing such a famous person in something that I’d created, well, it warmed my he

Cassandra’s POV“Wait,” I said, stopping Lucinda before she could go. I wasn’t sure if she believed Ellie’s accusations that I was a criminal or not, but she was clearly unimpressed with all the drama. And I didn’t blame her! She was famous, always in the public eye. And Ellie with her loud mouth had caused a scene. People were milling about all around us. They were whispering behind their hands and watching the scene unfold with wide eyes.I glanced around at the group that had gathered. They were all smartly dressed, CEOs and other business elites I assumed. I mean, this cruise was full of important people. So not only was Ellie making a scene, she was doing it in front of a lot of people that we might need to work with in the future. And to make things even worse, just then, a camera flashed. Shit. Someone was taking a picture. I could almost see the headlines now: Famous actress consorts with accused criminal on a cruise ship. Drama unfolds…Of course Lucinda was trying to get away

Cassandra’s POV“I think,” I leaned in to whisper to Dillon. “I think people are looking at you.”Dillon turned to the crowd and shrugged back at me.“Yeah, probably,” he said.I looked back to the crowd. There was no ‘probably’ about it. People were definitely looking at Dillon. A few men dressed in collared shirts and polo pants were talking quietly to themselves, their eyes fixed on Dillon while another group off the left were whispering amongst themselves, occasionally glancing up to look at Dillon.“Why?” I asked. Stella, Ellie, Cameron, and Lucinda all noticed it too.“I guess I forgot to tell you,” Dillon said off-handily. “Remember when I said I had to go out for a bit, the day before we left for the cruise?”I remembered. I’d been just about to go and read by the pool when Dillon had appeared, dressed in a suit. He said he had to go but he’d be back in time to make dinner. When I’d asked where he was going, he was pretty vague and evasive. I hadn’t thought too much of it at th

Cassandra’s POVI blinked, stunned, as I looked at the man standing in front of me. He was dressed casually, in a loud Hawaiian print shirt and his hair had been cut short. But it was him all right, the same man that I’d caught Ellie with.I couldn’t believe it! What were the chances? He hadn’t recognized me yet though. When I bumped into him, I made him spill his drink down the front of his shirt. His eyes were fixed on the red stain.“Whoops,” Stella said, seeing the mess on the man’s shirt. She scooped a napkin off the table and handed it to him. He began dabbing his shirt.I wondered if he even WOULD recognize me. Our accidental meeting had been very short. But if I recognized him, there was a good chance he’d recognize me too. I waited for him to look up, but he was too focused on his shirt. He dabbed away at the stain as I apologized again.“I’m really very sorry,” I said, urging him silently to look up at me.“No harm done. It’s a hideous shirt anyway. Honestly, you probably did

Cassandra’s POVWhat?!I felt like I’d just been punched in the stomach. Surely, I hadn’t heard her right. She’d just said that she was….Dillon’s ex-wife?But that wasn’t possible. Dillon had never been married.I looked to Cameron, confusion all over my face. Cameron shrugged, and pressed his lips together.“Sorry, Cass. I should have told you. I just…I didn’t feel like it was my story to tell. You know?”I shook my head at Cameron. Yes! You should have told me! That’s what I yelled in my head, but I was desperate to keep my composure, which meant keeping my mouth shut.Stella apparently didn’t feel the need to do the same though.“What…the actual…fuck?” she asked, approaching us. “Did you just say…” She pointed and flicked her finger back and forth between us all… “I must have heard you wrong. Because I thought you just said that you’re Dillon’s ex-wife.”Leave it to Stella to be blunt as hell.“I did,” Laura sighed. She rubbed her hands in front of her. “I’m sorry you had to find ou

Cassandra’s POVDillon received the blood he needed, and our prayers were answered. The doctor came out to the waiting room some time in the middle of the night to deliver the good news. Stella was asleep, her head on Cameron’s lap. Cameron was flipping through a magazine on women's health (it was all that they had). I was chewing my nails right down to the flesh. I leapt to my feet when I saw the doctor.“Good news,” the doctor said, smiling. “The transfusion worked. I’m happy to say that Dillon has stabilized and he’s in the clear now.”“Is he awake?” I asked, practically pouncing on the doctor.“Yes. He woke up from his coma about a half hour ago…”“Can I see him?” I asked, cutting off the doctor. He shook his head.“I know you’re eager to see your husband, but I’m afraid he needs to rest right now,” the doctor told us.“Where’s Laura?” Cameron asked, as Stella continued to sleep. I couldn’t help but notice that Cameron kept affectionately petting her head, stroking her hair with hi

Cassandra’s POVI’d never seen that woman before in my life. I was surprised to see her hugging Cameron. Stella and Jordyn were nowhere to be found. Perhaps they were still in the waiting room?As I approached, I got a good look at her. She was dressed well, in a cashmere two piece suit, with a white silk shirt underneath. She looked profession, well put together. She had gorgeous, black, silky hair that was long and straight. As I got closer, she glanced over at me. She had the bluest eyes I’d ever seen. She was roughly the same age as me, I figured, give or take a year. She was stunning, in a classic beauty sort of way. She looked like someone who belonged in a penthouse on Park Avenue in New York. She was elegant, right down to her suede Louis Vuitton’s pumps and French manicured nails.Clearly, Cameron knew who she was. They both had concern etched on their faces as they talked. But when Cameron saw me approaching, his expression shifted to a more intense look of worry.“Cassandra

Cassandra’s POVI entered Dillon’s room and my heart sunk. He was hooked up to even more machines than before, and his face was paler than I’d ever seen it. The machine beside him beeped rhythmically, showing his heart beat. But his eyes were closed. It killed me to see him like this, in a coma. I went to his bedside and took his hand in mine. The doctor had said that I should talk to him. What was I supposed to say? Tears brimmed in my eyes as I looked at his lifeless face. Cameron said he’d found a match for Dillon, but he was vague about who that was. I didn’t push the issue. As far as I was concerned, it was a miracle. Apparently this person was on her way. Dillon’s condition was critical though. The doctor told us that, at any moment, his organs could start shutting down.I stroked his hand with my thumb, thinking about what to say to him. Then a little voice inside my head told me to just speak from my heart. So that’s what I did. “Dillon,” I said softly. “I don’t know if yo

Cassandra’s POV“Isn’t good?” I asked. I felt faint. My heart was beating so fast I could hear it in my ears. “What does that mean?”“Dillon needs blood,” the doctor said. “Without it, there’s a high chance that his organs will shut down again. We’re doing everything we can for him. But without more blood, there’s really nothing we can do.”I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. How was this possible? Dillon needed blood. There had to be blood, somewhere. There had to be someone with Dillon’s blood type.“We’re going to keep calling around. Unfortunately, because the blood is so rare, we often don’t get a lot of it from donors. So in the meantime, if any of you know someone with his blood type, then please. Reach out. I’m afraid the situation is quite dire.”With that, the doctor patted me on the arm and walked away.I watched him walk away, stunned. If we know anyone? How the hell were we supposed to know anyone with Dillon’s rare blood? Wasn’t that their job? This was a hospital for

Cassandra’s POVAgain, we found ourselves waiting. Again, we found ourselves tense with worry. Again, Stella stuffed her mouth with sugary snacks. And again, my thoughts turned to the worst case scenario. The doctor had told us nothing. There was no news, no updates. We were stuck in a holding pattern that felt like it went on forever. At one point, I felt like I would break. I honestly didn’t know how much more of this I could take.I’d been there, with him, in the room. He’d been smiling. A little groggy, yes, and talking nonsense about being my husband, but he had seemed…well. Hadn’t he?What had happened? One moment he’d been sleeping and the next? He’d been convulsing. He was in surgery. Again. That was all we knew. And again, all we could do was wait.I don’t know how long it was before Dr. Forter came back. I’d lost all sense of time. Hell, I didn’t even know what day it was anymore. Our time in the warehouse, with Ellie and her stupid pictures felt like a lifetime ago. Had it r

Cassandra’s POVShit.I was worried that Dillon was going to correct the nurse. And if he did, they might kick me out of here. So I gave Dillon a look that said, follow along. Although, he was pretty out of it so I wasn’t sure if would pick up what I was laying down.“He’s so brave, isn’t he? My husband.” I enunciated the last word, hoping Dillon would catch on. “Cameron and Stella are here, too,” I said. “But they can’t see you yet since they’re not family.” Again, I enunciated the last word.“Husband,” Dillon sighed contentedly. “I like the sounds of that.”“There, there,” I told him, hoping he wouldn’t say anything else. The nurse was nice and quick, thankfully. She just took a few vitals and jotted some things down.“All done,” she smiled. “He does need to rest though. So not too long of a visit, okay?” “Of course,” I said. When she was gone, I explained to Dillon that I was pretending to be his wife so they’d let me see him.“We don’t have to pretend,” he said, his voice stil

Cassandra’s POVI waited with breath held for Dr. Forter to tell me about Dillon. Cameron and Stella appeared behind him and came to join me.“He’s out of surgery,” the doctor said. “We were able to extract the bullet cleanly. Thankfully, it didn’t hit any major organs. He’s stable, for now. But he’s lost a lot of blood so we’re monitoring him closely.”His words were like heaven to my ears.“Stable?” I asked. “That’s good, right?”“It is,” the doctor smiled. “He’s not completely out of the woods yet, so to speak. But it looks very promising at the moment. It’s a good thing he got here when he did.”“Can I see him?” I asked. I felt an enormous weight lifting off my chest. I’d feared the worst, we all had. I’d been terrified that the doctor was going to come and tell us that Dillon hadn’t made it. But now that he was stable, my mind immediately turned to thoughts of seeing him.“You can, yes. But not quite yet. He’s still waking up from surgery.”“I want to see him too,” Cameron quipped

Cassandra’s POVWe did our best to pass the time but it felt like the clock was moving backwards. Jordyn went to get us some food, and when he came back, we couldn’t help but chuckle. He dumped an armload of vending machine crap onto the table.“What did you do?” Cameron asked, “Rob every vending machine in the hospital?”“I didn’t know what anyone wanted,” he told us, suddenly sheepish at the mass amounts of chips, chocolates, and candies he’d purchased.“Thank you,” I told him. I knew it was his way of helping. None of us knew what to do, really, as we waited there in that room. Jordyn was at least trying to feed us.Stella reached for some chips and tore open the bag.“Cassandra? What’s your poison?” Cameron asked me. I was sitting, my knees nervously bouncing up and down. “Chocolate? Gummies?”I shook my head. “I’m not hungry,” I told them. Food was the last thing on my mind. Dillon had been in surgery for over two hours now. Several other people waiting had been called away, one b
