Cassandra’s POV

I stood frozen in spot. It was pitch-black in the elevator. I couldn’t see a thing. My heart started racing.

‘Don’t panic,’ I told myself. ‘Stay calm.’

But my breathing quickened as I realized that the elevator must have broken down. It wasn’t moving.

I reached into my purse, fumbling in the darkness for my phone. I pulled things out: a lipstick, a powder compact, a small notebook. I tossed them on to the ground. Finally, my hand found it and I pulled it out.

“It’s going to be okay,” I said out loud. “You can phone Jordyn. He’s in the building and he can find someone to help you.”

But as I looked at my phone, I saw there were no bars. Which meant there was no signal.

How could there be no signal?

“No no no,” I said as my hands started shaking. My mind filled with awful thoughts. What if the elevator cables were defective and the elevator plunged to the bottom? What floor was I on? How far up?

What if there wasn’t enough air in there and I ran out of breath? My knees w

Cassandra’s POV“HELP!” I cried out immediately. “Please, help me! I’m trapped in the elevator. It’s dark and I’m alone.”“It’s okay,” the voice said. It was muffled through the door. I ran to the door.“Get me out!” I cried out, my voice high and frantic.“You need to stay calm,” the voice reassured. “We’re going to get you out of there.”“I don’t have enough air,” I said, breathing heavily.“There’s more than enough air. Take a deep breath. And please back away from the door. We’re working on it. You’ll be out soon. I promise.”Relief flooded through me. They knew I was in here! They were working on getting me out! I thought for a moment that I recognized the voice. But it was faint through the door.“Are you away from the door?” the voice asked.I did as I was asked and backed away from the door.“Yes,” I called out.“Good. Stay towards the back of the elevator, okay?”“Okay,” I said.I took a deep breath and bit my lip. I already felt a bit calmer. But I still hated being trapped

Cassandra’s POV“Cassandra!” Dillon exclaimed. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?” His eyes anxiously scanned my body.“No, I’m fine,” I said, looking up at him. I was relieved that the doors were finally open. But he was above me. Which meant the elevator was dangerously between two floors. My heart sank. The doors were open but I still had to get out. “Just stay there,” Dillon instructed. “The maintenance crew is here with me. They’re going to help you out.”I was happy to see Dillon, but I suddenly wondered what he was doing there. This was Jordyn’s company’s office building. It seemed awfully coincidental that Dillon just happened to be there at the same time I got trapped in an elevator. “What are you doing here?” I asked. Dillon flashed me a smile.“Don’t worry about that right now. I’ll explain later,” he told me in a voice that left no room for arguing. “Let’s get you out of there first, okay?”I nodded.“Do you think there’s enough room to pull her out?” Dillon asked whoever was

Cassandra’s POVDillon tightened his grip on my shoulder. The atmosphere between the two men was tense. I felt it.“Come on,” Dillon said to me. “Let’s get you out here. I’m sure you want to rest after all that.”Jordyn’s eyes narrowed at Dillon’s words. He seemed angry that Dillon had helped me. But whatever, I couldn’t dwell on that. I was so over Jordyn and his drama and his complicated feelings. If Jordyn was jealous, that was his issue. Didn’t he have enough on his plate with Ellie and his engagement? He needed to start focusing on his own life. “Are you sure you’re okay, Cassandra?” Jordyn asked, stepping towards us. “Maybe you should come back to my office to get checked out before you go.”Back to Jordyn’s office was the last place I wanted to go.“She’s fine,” Dillon said dryly. “I’ll make sure she gets home safely.”“I’d feel better if you just sat down for a bit,” Jordyn said, completely ignoring Dillon. “I know how much you hate confined places and…”“Thank you for your

Cassandra’s POVI appreciated his kind words. I could tell that he really cared about me. We locked eyes for a moment. Then I realized something. He’d said he’d been looking for me and had called Stella to ask where I was.“Why were you looking for me?” I asked.“Oh my god! Right! I almost completely forgot,” he said sheepishly. “I wanted to invite you to…this thing.”He looked down at his hands. He was acting a bit shy.“What thing?” I prodded.“It’s a cruise party,” he said, fidgeting with his hands. “It’s next month.”“Oh, like a date?” I asked, confused. Dillon was always so confident but he was acting strange. If I didn’t know better, I’d say he was afraid to ask me.“No, it’s not a date,” he said in a rush. Cameron’s coming, too. It’s out of town. So I thought we could all go. It’s a great ship. They have live entertainment so we could catch a musical. Have a nice dinner? I think they’re having a dance, too. Oh, and there’s a casino? I suck at black jack but we could hit up some

Cassandra’s POVDillon drove me to my house.“I’m home,” I called as I came through the front door. “And I have a guest so set another seat at the table.”The maid came and took our coats.“Are you sure your parents won’t mind?” Dillon asked as I led him through the foyer.“Dillon,” I said, fixing him with a stern look. “Come on. You know you’re always welcome in our house.”“We’re out on the terrace,” my mother said in her sing-song voice. We went through the terrace doors and sure enough, both my parents were there. The table was set, with candles and fresh cut flowers. I could tell my mother had gone through some effort for this dinner.“It looks lovely,” I said, kissing her on the cheek. “I love eating outside.” Then I turned to my dad and kissed him on the cheek too.“We’ve been having such nice weather,” my father said. “So we figured, why not take advantage of it.”“Plus it’s not very often we get to eat together as a family anymore.”“Mr. and Mrs. Stoneworth,” Dillon said. “So

Cassandra’s POV“I’m sorry,” Dillon said, misunderstanding my silence for a refusal to tell him. “I was pressing and I shouldn’t have. It’s your past. It’s none of my business.”Just then, I saw a shooting star. It seemed like some sort of sign. Dillon was a good person, and even though the incident from my past was difficult to talk about, if there was anyone I could share it with, it was Dillon. I always sort of feared people would look at me differently if they knew what had happened to me. But I knew Dillon wouldn’t. He wouldn’t judge me.He wasn’t like that. Which is why I knew I could trust him. I shook my head and told him it was fine. “I just don’t talk about it very often,” I sighed. “But it’s okay. I’d like you to know.”He took my hand and squeezed it. Then he sat and waited patiently while I collected my thoughts. I didn’t even know where to start. It had been such a traumatic ordeal.“I was kidnapped,” I said, my voice low.“What?” His eyes grew wide as saucers. “Are yo

Cassandra’s POVI was deeply moved by Dillon’s words of support. I wasn’t used to feeling so supported and cared for. My marriage to Jordyn had done a real number on me, and when I found out he had cheated on me, it broke my heart. For weeks after our marriage ended, I felt inadequate. I asked myself the same questions over and over again. Why hadn’t he loved me? Why wasn’t I good enough? Why didn’t he want to be with me? I felt like such a colossal failure. But when the dust settled and it was all over, I looked back on the marriage. I’d spent pretty much our entire marriage feeling neglected. How often had I lied awake at night, waiting for Jordyn to come home, eager to see him? But then, when he had, he’d completely ignored me, choosing to take a shower and watch Netflix instead of cuddling with me. He hardly ever invited me out to his business events. Whenever I asked to go, I felt like I was annoying him. It was an awful feeling, trying to vie for someone’s attention. He was supp

Cassandra’s POVRealizing it was Jordyn, I stepped even further away from Dillon. I wondered what Jordyn could possibly want. It was a little late, after all. But then I realized it was probably a call about work.“I’m so sorry about the elevator, Cassandra,” Jordyn said quickly into the phone. “The elevator manager knew something was wrong with the elevator. He was supposed to post notices on each floor but I guess he skipped our floor. There was a malfunction with the electric pad. It had been misfiring. That’s why the elevator stopped.”I glanced over at Dillon. He was still sitting on the swing but his eyes were locked on me. It was almost like he could sense it was Jordyn. I knew that was impossible. Dillon was a good guy but he wasn’t a superhero with supernatural powers or anything. I was being silly.Besides, even if Dillon did know it was Jordyn on the phone, so what? I was in a business deal with Jordyn. I’d have to talk to him from time to time. Dillon and I were just frien

Cassandra’s POV “Are you fucking kidding me?” Stella spat out. Her face contorted into a look of seething rage. I didn’t blame her. I was really pissed off too. “Jordyn’s bidding against you?”“This is ridiculous,” Dillon exclaimed, shaking his head. “He just really won’t leave you alone.”The auctioneer gave the going once, going twice warning, so I lifted my paddle again.“Sixteen thousand,” I said loudly.I actually couldn’t believe this. Ellie was perched next to him, her hand on his. She glanced over at us, a smug smile plastered on her face. Obviously, they were there together. I should have known I’d run into Jordyn at some point during the cruise. I hadn’t seen him that afternoon, but of course he was there with Ellie.“Seventeen thousand,” Jordyn said, lifting his paddle. I heard a few people whispering in the crowd. It was a beautiful, rare fabric, most people didn’t understand it’s true worth. From their perspective, Jordyn and I were fighting over some old lace.“You have

Cassandra’s POVCam, Stella, Dillon and I all gathered in the hallway outside our rooms. We were on our way to a charity auction hosted by the cruise ship. After the strange meeting with Brock and his wife, we’d spent the afternoon at the pool. We’d left Dillon behind since he was knee-deep in networking, but I’d been thrilled when he joined us poolside a little later. It had been a fabulous afternoon and our faces all bore signs of the sun we’d basked under while lounging by the pool.Stella had taken forever to get ready. She put on one dress after another, discarding each one in a huff. She’d finally settled on a low cut, form-fitting red dress with cute, black polka dots. I opted for an emerald green silk slip dress with an exposed back. It fell to my just above my knees and the color reminded me of Dillon’s eyes.“Well look at you two,” Cam exclaimed, kissing us both on the cheeks. He’d had all afternoon to sober up and he looked charming in his pin-striped suit. “Aren’t we the lu

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 88: Brock

Cassandra’s POVI blinked, stunned, as I looked at the man standing in front of me. He was dressed casually, in a loud Hawaiian print shirt and his hair had been cut short. But it was him all right, the same man that I’d caught Ellie with.I couldn’t believe it! What were the chances? He hadn’t recognized me yet though. When I bumped into him, I made him spill his drink down the front of his shirt. His eyes were fixed on the red stain.“Whoops,” Stella said, seeing the mess on the man’s shirt. She scooped a napkin off the table and handed it to him. He began dabbing his shirt.I wondered if he even WOULD recognize me. Our accidental meeting had been very short. But if I recognized him, there was a good chance he’d recognize me too. I waited for him to look up, but he was too focused on his shirt. He dabbed away at the stain as I apologized again.“I’m really very sorry,” I said, urging him silently to look up at me.“No harm done. It’s a hideous shirt anyway. Honestly, you probably did

Cassandra’s POV“I think,” I leaned in to whisper to Dillon. “I think people are looking at you.”Dillon turned to the crowd and shrugged back at me.“Yeah, probably,” he said.I looked back to the crowd. There was no ‘probably’ about it. People were definitely looking at Dillon. A few men dressed in collared shirts and polo pants were talking quietly to themselves, their eyes fixed on Dillon while another group off the left were whispering amongst themselves, occasionally glancing up to look at Dillon.“Why?” I asked. Stella, Ellie, Cameron, and Lucinda all noticed it too.“I guess I forgot to tell you,” Dillon said off-handily. “Remember when I said I had to go out for a bit, the day before we left for the cruise?”I remembered. I’d been just about to go and read by the pool when Dillon had appeared, dressed in a suit. He said he had to go but he’d be back in time to make dinner. When I’d asked where he was going, he was pretty vague and evasive. I hadn’t thought too much of it at th

Cassandra’s POV“Wait,” I said, stopping Lucinda before she could go. I wasn’t sure if she believed Ellie’s accusations that I was a criminal or not, but she was clearly unimpressed with all the drama. And I didn’t blame her! She was famous, always in the public eye. And Ellie with her loud mouth had caused a scene. People were milling about all around us. They were whispering behind their hands and watching the scene unfold with wide eyes.I glanced around at the group that had gathered. They were all smartly dressed, CEOs and other business elites I assumed. I mean, this cruise was full of important people. So not only was Ellie making a scene, she was doing it in front of a lot of people that we might need to work with in the future. And to make things even worse, just then, a camera flashed. Shit. Someone was taking a picture. I could almost see the headlines now: Famous actress consorts with accused criminal on a cruise ship. Drama unfolds…Of course Lucinda was trying to get away

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 85: Accusations

Cassandra’s POVLucinda Starke stood before us, a bemused smile on her face. Her mere presence had rendered us all speechless, which was a rare event for Ellie. Usually, that woman never shut up.“I don’t mean to interrupt, and I apologize if I’m intruding, but I was standing over there and I thought I heard my name.” She turned to Stella. “Stella, so nice to see you again. I’m actually very happy I ran into you. After our recent conversation, I got to thinking. I have some ideas for a gown I’d like to run by you? I’d love your input. It’s for the red carpet premiere of my latest movie, so it has to be dazzling.”Lucinda flashed Stella a beautiful smile. I was stunned. I couldn’t believe I was standing in front of Lucinda Starke! And just like Stella had said, she was wearing MY design. Stella’s description of Lucinda in my dress hadn’t done her justice. She looked fabulous, perfect, gorgeous beyond words. Seeing such a famous person in something that I’d created, well, it warmed my he

Cassandra’s POVI glanced at Stella. Her eyebrows were furrowed in a deep frown. I knew how she felt. I never, in a million years, thought we’d see Ellie on this cruise. And just when everything had been going so well!“Lucinda Starke has no reason to just be polite, as you pointed out, Ellie,” Stella snapped. “If she says she wants Hot House Flower to design a dress for her for a red carpet event, then I’m sure she’ll follow through.”Ellie rolled her eyes and scoffed. “She’s a public figure,” Ellie said. “Of course she’s polite. She has a hundred different designers at her fingertips. Famous ones. Why would she choose your company?”My blood boiled as I stood there, looking at Ellie. She was wearing a gorgeous bathing suit cover up and her hair fell over her shoulders in loose waves. I glanced around to see if she was with Jordyn, but I didn’t see him. How was this possible? What were the chances that she and Jordyn had chosen the same exact cruise as us? I was starting to feel like

Cassandra’s POV “Who?” I asked. Stella dragged a chair over to the table I was sitting at. Her cheeks were flushed from excitement.“Wellll,” she said, dragging out the suspense. “We were just leaving the buffet, which, by the way, is absolutely fabulous,” she started. “Like seriously, sea food for days. I think Cam ate his weight in crab legs.”“Get to the point,” I interrupted her. She’d just come up here and interrupted my cat nap with, what was apparently, exciting news. I didn’t need a diatribe on how fabulous the buffet was. I wanted to know who she saw!!!“Okay, okay,” she chuckled. “Sometimes I forget that patience is not exactly your strong suit. So, we were leaving the buffet, and I run into…” Again, she paused.“Just TELL ME!” I urged.“Lucinda Starke!” she blurted out.“What?” I gasped. “As in THE Lucinda Starke?”“One and the same,” Stella nodded enthusiastically.I couldn’t believe it! Lucinda Starke was a famous Hollywood actress. She’d just starred in a box office hit

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 82: All Aboard!

Cassandra’s POVI felt like a kid in a candy store as we walked around the cruise ship. It was so big and so elegant, far better than anything I could have imagined. We found our rooms, and I was shocked to see that Dillon had arranged suites for us. I was expecting a small, cramped interior room, which honestly, I’d been a bit worried about since I had such a deep-rooted case of claustrophobia. But our suite didn’t feel small in the slightest. There was a bedroom with two queen beds and more than enough for both of us. I ran my hand over the decadent duvet cover and opened one of the mahogany dresser drawers.“Cass, come see the bathroom,” Stella called to me. I went and peeked in. It was white marble, with a glass shower and two sinks. I’d seen pictures of cruise ship rooms before and they looked nothing like this. This was….extravagant.We both walked out in the main room and gasped at the same time. The main room had a little sitting area with a small couch and a table, as well as
