Cassandra’s POV

We all bolted onto our feet. The surgeon approached us as he removed his plastic gloves. We waited expectantly, fearing the worst. Jordyn took my hand and held it so hard, I thought he would crush my knuckles.

“He’s stabilized,” the surgeon said.

Jordyn let out a long breath. He released his grip on my hand.

“Really?” Jordyn asked, relief in his voice.

I was relieved too. I’d been so worried that the surgeon was going to come and tell us that Stanley hadn’t made it.

I couldn’t even bear the thought of it.

“Yes,” the surgeon confirmed, nodding his head. His tone was dry and factual. “He’s out of the woods, so to speak. His life is no longer in danger.”

“Thank God,” Jordyn said.

“Not God,” the surgeon quipped. “You have modern medicine to thank for this one.”

“Yes, of course,” Jordyn said absently. I couldn’t tell if the surgeon was joking or not. His face remained serious.

“Fortunately, the myocarditis hadn’t progressed to the point where he needed a heart transplant.

Cassandra’s POV“What?”He repeated himself with the same, calm voice.“I don’t want a divorce.”I was speechless!Speechless and angry! Where was this coming from? Who did he think he was? What did he mean ‘he didn’t want a divorce?’I stared at him, bewildered, unable to mutter even a single syllable.“I believe we can save our marriage,” he continued. But I held up my hand to stop him.I didn’t want to hear this. I didn’t want to hear ANY of this.“Jordyn,” I said, regaining my composure. I gently placed Stanley’s hand down on his blanket and stood up, to face Jordyn. “I can’t believe what I’m hearing.”“Please listen to me,” Jordyn pleaded. “I can explain. I can…”“Stop,” I shook my head. He did. He furrowed his brows and swallowed hard. Then he waited for me to continue. My mind was reeling. I didn’t even know where to start.“It’s not…it’s not that simple,” I said. “You neglected me for years. Do you know how many nights I sat alone, waiting for you to come home? Craving your aff

Cassandra’s POVI called Stella first thing the next morning and explained the situation. I wanted to go back to the hospital to visit Stanley, but I wasn’t sure how she’d react. She thought Jordyn was a total asshole so I didn’t think she’d be overly sympathetic. To my surprise, however, she was.“Of course, Cass. Don’t worry about anything. I’ve got it covered. I’ll look after things here at the company while you visit Stanley,” Stella told me.“Really?” I asked, unable to hide the shock in my voice.“Yes,” she laughed. “I’m not a cold-hearted bitch! I know you care about Stanley. I hope he recovers soon. Just check in with me, okay?”I agreed and hung up, a little flummoxed by her support. Clearly she understood that this was about Stanely, NOT Jordyn.A little while later, I pulled into the hospital parking lot and was surprised to see Ellie. She was just getting out of her car and she hadn’t seen me.“Really?” I scoffed to myself. It was hard not to get riled up when I saw her.

Cassandra’s POV“He’s awake!” I gasped, rushing to his side. “Stanley, can you hear me?” I gently took his hand. He squinted under the bright light, waiting for his eyes to adjust. For a moment, he looked confused. Then realization dawned on him.“Cassandra?” he asked, turning his head towards me and smiling weakly. “What are you doing here, dear? There’s no need to fuss over me.”I squeezed his hand. I was so relieved to hear his voice. For a moment last night, I thought I’d never hear it again. He still looked very weak and he was hooked up to an IV, but he was awake and alert.“Nonsense,” I smiled at him. “Of course I’m here. How are you? Are you in pain? What do you need? More pillows? Water?”“Slow down,” he chuckled. “Always the caregiver, that one,” he pointed at me and winked at Persa.“I just want to make sure you’re comfortable,” I told him. That’s why I was there, after all. To take care of him. “I’m perfectly fine, Cassandra. In fact, seeing your beautiful face is medicin

I was overtired and careless. He nodded quickly. “Well, please let me know as soon as you hear anything,” he said. Apparently, he didn't take my words seriously.Phew. I dodged a bullet and managed to circumvent any suspicion.I told Jordyn I had to go but that I’d check back in with Stanley later. I went straight to the studio and sat down in Stella’s office.“How’s Stanley?” she asked. I sighed deeply.“He’s recovering,” I told her. “But I don’t know, Stell. It’s strange. He was perfectly healthy and then bam, he just developed this heart condition. The doctor’s looking into it. Running more tests. That sort of thing.”“Well,” she said, resting back in her chair. “I’m glad to hear he’s doing okay. Cassandra’s POVThe next day, I pulled up to the café to meet with Dillon. I was a bit nervous as I walked through the door. I didn’t know why I was nervous. Was it because I had to tell him we wouldn’t be moving forward with the collaboration?Or was it something else?I did my best to shrug it off. This was a business meeting, after all.Dillon had chosen the café. He said it was one of his favorite places, and raved on and on about pastries or scones or something. Originally, I’d wanted to meet in his office, since that felt far more ‘business-like’, but he’d persuaded me.He was already there, seated in the corner of the small café. He was wearing a crisp white shirt, rolled up at the elbows with a couple of the top buttons undone. He looked casual and comfortable, like usual. He saw me and waved, a huge smile breaking out onto his face.I went over and he motioned to three coffees on the table.“I took the liberty of ordering a coffee for you,” he said. “But I didn’t kno

Cassandra’s POV“Do I look like an assistant?” I asked. It was three days later and Stella and I were standing outside Jordyn’s office. We were about to meet with him to sign the contracts but I, of course, had to keep posing as a personal assistant.“What the hell does that even mean?” Stella laughed.“I don’t know,” I said defensively. “I mean, like, am I dressed okay?”Ever since I’d almost let my true identity slip at the hospital, I’d become a little paranoid. I really didn’t want Jordyn to discover who I really was until the divorce papers were signed.“Yes,” Stella huffed. “You’re fine. Stop worrying so much. He already thinks you’re an assistant. He had no reason to think otherwise. Now come on, we’re gonna be late.”Stella and I met the receptionist, and then we were led into a large conference room. Jordyn and his team were already waiting for us.“Miss Sinclair,” Jordyn said, standing to address Stella. “I hope traffic wasn’t too bad.” He extended his hand and Stella shook i

Cassandra’s POVThe revised divorce papers sat on the table. The room was completely silent.Ellie’s eyes flew open. Jordyn stared at the papers in stunned silence.“Jordyn,” Ellie started, but he waved his hand dismissively at her. “Leave, please” he said. “All of you.”Everyone stood and awkwardly filed out of the room, Stella included. But as Stella left, she winked at me, gave me a little thumbs up, and mouthed:‘Good luck’.“What are these?” Jordyn asked, his eyes fixed on the papers on the table.“You know what those are,” I said firmly. I was done with playing games. He agreed to sign the papers after his meeting with my company’s CEO. And I was holding him to it.“The divorce papers?” He looked up at me and I saw a flicker of sadness in his eyes. But I couldn’t let myself care. I reminded myself of our marriage and the way he had treated me all those years. His feeble apologies now didn’t make up for the years of neglect.“Yes, Jordyn,” I replied, lifting my chin. “Sign them.

Cassandra’s POVI arranged all the papers back exactly the way I’d found them.My heart beat quickly in my chest. I resisted the urge to read through all the files. Surely, Jordyn was waiting for me and he’d wonder what I was doing if I took too long. The last thing I wanted was for him to catch me snooping around on his desk.I racked my brain, trying to think. But I couldn’t reconcile my memory of that night with the picture. I hadn’t been there, the night of the accident. I didn’t remember being anywhere near the scene.Yet, I was in that picture, clear as day.I wasn’t sure what was going on, nor why I was in a picture at the scene of Ellie’s accident. I couldn’t dwell on it though. I had to file those thoughts away for the time being.I had more pressing matters to attend to.I’d come here determined to have Jordyn sign the divorce papers. Enough stalling. Enough beating around the bush. He apologized that night at the hospital, as though his weak apology could somehow wash away

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 146: Big success

Cassandra’s POV“Come on! It’s staring!” Stella squealed, motioning for us all to join her. We were at Dillon’s, eagerly awaiting the start of the televised red carpet event for the launch of Lucinda Starke’s new movie. True to her word, Lucinda had ordered a custom dress from Hot House Design to wear to the event. I’d worked tirelessly on the dress myself, making sure that it was perfect. Now it was time to watch her prance down the red carpet in it.It was a Saturday night, and we were only a couple weeks away from our vacation now. Dillon was back to his old self and had been given the green light from the doctor to go on a holiday. I hadn’t told Stella about my strange phone call with Jordyn regarding the fashion show bill. The phone call had been almost a week ago, and despite his promise to pay the bill, I kept getting calls from the venue.I tried to push the stress aside so I could really enjoy the evening. Dillon had cooked us all his famous lasagna, and we’d eaten outside, si

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 145: The Venue Bill

Cassandra’s POVI asked the person on the phone to clarify. What did she mean Jordyn hadn’t paid the bill! I asked for the amount of the bill and balked. It was a massive amount of money, since the venue included décor, food, lighting, and drinks. Jordyn had arranged everything, promising to foot the bill, as per our collaboration. And clearly, he’d spared no expense.Don’t get me wrong, the venue had been magnificent and Jordyn had really outdone himself. But I never, in a million years, would have made some of the choices he had if I’d known we might have to pay for it.I thanked her and told her that I would take care of it. I hung, feeling upset. Hot House Flower didn’t have that sort of money just sitting around. But as co-signers of the event, we were on the hook for the bill if Jordyn’s company reneged on the payment.Which it looked like they were.My mind spun. Sure, we had a company account, but paying off a bill that large would put a massive dent in our company funds, and w

Cassandra’s POVLisa! Of course!“Come in,” I said, smiling. She was the wife of the man Ellie had been cheating with. I’d sat with her and consoled her while we talked about men and how awful they could be. I’d given her my number, hoping that we could become friends, but I’d never heard from her. What was she doing here in my office though? I told her to come in.She came and sat at my desk, a troubled look on her face.“I’m sorry to bother you,” she said, tucking her hair behind her ear.“It’s no bother,” I said kindly, my curiosity piqued.“I thought about doing this over the phone, but I figured it was best to do it in person.”She reached into a briefcase at her feet and pulled out some papers. She placed them on my desk, spread out, and then shook her head.I stared at the papers, shocked. They were…my sketches. The design sketches that had been stolen the night of our office robbery.“Where did you get these?” I asked, my eyes fixed on the sketches.“I found them. In his drawer

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 143  Were we friends, or more?

Cassandra’s POVI closed down my computer for the day, happy to be done work for the day. I was bringing Dillon dinner at his house, even though he was more than capable of cooking again. He’d been home for over two weeks now, and he was back into his old routine, with a few modifications. He still had to take it easy when it came to physical exercise, and he wasn’t supposed to work too much, but he was getting better day by day.I brought him supper every day after work. It was the least I could do, since he’d looked after me when I was ill. Besides, I liked being at Dillon’s house, and I looked forward to it every day. Honestly, I think he liked being taken care of, which was why he hadn’t offered to cook dinner yet. He was milking it a bit, the whole ‘me looking after him’ thing. I was happy to do it though. It felt nice, taking care of Dillon after everything he’d done for me.We’d talked about having me stay with him, at his house, while he recovered. But I ultimately thought it w

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 142: Just you and I

Dillon’s POV“Vacation?” Cassandra asked, an amused look on her face. I blushed. What the hell had I just said? Of all the things I could say to her, right in that moment, I asked her to go on vacation?I felt like an idiot. I’d made a promise to myself when I’d found out she was kidnapped. I promised to tell Cassandra how I really felt. This whole business with Laura had stirred up some unexpected emotions in me, bringing me back to a time I wanted to forget. Plus I was emotional from the medication. But none of that changed how I felt about Cassandra. My feelings for her were so strong, so real, and so all-consuming.I loved her. I’d always loved her. And I always would. The night I met Laura at the law school mixer was the night I’d found out that Cassandra was engaged. I pretty much NEVER had one-night stands. I was more of a relationship type guy. But seeing Cassandra’s engagement splashed all over Facebook, well. It hurt. I felt like I’d lost her, forever. She was getting married

Dillon’s POVShe was so cute when she ate soup, Cassandra. I watched her from my bed as she tried to delicately slurp the soup from the spoon, dripping some onto her chin. I’d been bracing myself for the conversation we just had for days, ever since I learned that it was Laura who had swooped in and given me the blood I needed for my transfusion.I hadn’t even seen her, though, Laura. She left long before I was awake that night. She just sort of slipped in and slipped out, just like she had all those years ago. Or at least, that’s what it felt like.I rarely thought about those days. Sometimes it felt like it hadn’t even happened. One minute, I was flirting with a pretty woman at a law school mixer. And the next? I was sitting in a café being told I was going to be a father. I’d been so caught off guard, so overwhelmed. And then I’d been overjoyed. That was the part I left out while I told Cassandra the story. The news that Laura was pregnant had hit me like a bolt of lightning, but on

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 140: Shot Gun Wedding

Cassandra’s POVI felt my jaw drop wide open. What did he just say?Laura had been…pregnant? That wasn’t the reason I’d been expecting. Dillon fell silent, staring out the window. My thoughts whirled.“And the baby was…” my voice trailed off.“Mine,” Dillon finished, a finality in his tone.“Oh my god, Dillon,” I said, reaching for his hand. “What happened? To the baby, I mean?”For a brief moment I wondered if Dillon had a child. I mean, it was possible, I supposed. I wasn’t naïve enough to think he’d never been with a woman before. And accidents happen. So it was plausible that Dillon had a little kid out there, running around somewhere in the world. But then why wasn’t he with his child? No. I shook my head. Dillon would NEVER abandon his own child. He was loyal to a fault. I chastised myself for even thinking that way.“It was an accident,” Dillon told me. “I barely even knew Laura. We just…we hooked up one night at a college party and then bam, out of nowhere, she called me up to

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 139: Marriage

Cassandra’s POVIt wasn’t until a week later that I finally got up the nerve to ask Dillon about his ex-wife, Laura. Dillon had been recovering for the better part of the week, and I didn’t want to disrupt his progress. He was mostly asleep anyway, drifting in and out of dreams, seeming a bit dazed and confused. So I waited until I felt like he could handle the emotional weight of the conversation.“Hello beautiful,” Dillon smiled at me as I came into his room. Cameron and I had been taking shifts at the hospital, making sure that at least one of us was always there for him, although, in all honesty, I was there the most.He was sitting in his bed, looking quite good. The color had come back to his face and he was no longer hooked up to the machines. He wasn’t quite well enough to go home yet, but he’d been transferred out of intensive care and now had a room with a window. He’d still need to stay another week or so in the hospital so he could be monitored, but he looked more like hims

  • Divorce and Regret, His Ex-wife is a Billionaire   Chapter 138: Just Hold Me

Cassandra’s POV“There she is. My beautiful wife,” Dillon teased from his hospital bed, winking at me. He was trying to make a joke about the fact that I was pretending to be his wife, but hearing him say the word ‘wife’ cut my heart like a knife. He was looking much better though. The color had returned to his cheeks a bit and his complexion was less gray and pasty. He was sitting up, still hooked up to an assortment of machines. But he was awake and lucid.I paused at the door. Part of me wanted to run to him and take his hand in mine. I wanted to rest my head on his chest and have him stroke my hair. The other part of me?It wanted to slap him hard across the face.“What’s wrong?” he asked, furrowing his brow. “I was shot, remember. I’m not contagious. Come. Sit.”He patted his bedside, searching my face. I tried to move, but my feet wouldn’t budge.“Dillon,” I said. I wanted to ask him about Laura, but he was still hooked up to machines. He’d just gone through hell, hell that I’d c
