"You don't want to have children?" Nicholas asked calmly.
Nathalie was stunned by Nicholas' question. Did she want to have children? Of course she did. She almost had them, but Charles killed him instead.
But did she want to have them with Nicholas? It was just a temporary marriage, right? And her feelings for Nicholas were not at all comparable to her desire to have children.
"Look, Nicholas," Nathalie said carefully. "You said your grandfather needed a successor to your family and that meant you had to have children for that purpose, right?"
Nicholas smiled and his gaze and body language did not change at all, remaining as calm as before.
"Don't think too much about it. That's not my main goal and as for my grandfather, he doesn't need to know too much about our plans, right?" Nicholas said.
"But--"
"Nate, this is modern times. Even if we need to have children, we don't need to have sex to get them. You've heard of IVF, right?"
Nathalie pouted. "Don't joke about things like this."
"Don't think about it too much, Nate. We'll think about it again when the time comes to talk about it."
Nathalie thought that Nicholas was right. She must have been thinking too much about things that hadn't happened yet and was getting stressed out because of it.
"Look, Nate," Nicholas said softly, placing his hand on top of hers on the table. "I know you've been through a tough time in your life. But, I think you should also stop worrying and let someone else help you through all your tough times."
Nathalie felt embarrassed, realizing the position of their hands on the table, but before she could pull her hand away, Nicholas did so first.
"Let's just talk about general things," Nicholas said. "Tell me, what do you want to include in our draft marriage agreement? Don't hesitate, we'll think about it together."
"Are we going to sleep in... Uh... the same room?" Nathalie asked nervously.
"Do you want to sleep in the same room with me?" Nicholas asked with a raised eyebrow.
"No, of course not," Nathalie quickly denied. She was sure her face was red again. She could feel her cheeks warming. "That's what I meant to ask. We can sleep in separate rooms, right?"
"Sure, Nate. I'll set aside a special room for you. I won't be disrespectful to you, Nate. I'll respect this marriage, as long as we're still bound to each other. There won't be other women, there won't be any lies. I won't hurt you, let alone force anything you don't want."
Nathalie nodded quickly. "Yes. I'll do it too, just like you. At least until the marriage is over."
"A year, at least."
"Yeah, okay, a year at least. Yes, I understand, Nicholas."
Nicholas stood up and straightened his jacket. "Let's go back to the hospital now. Your father is probably awake and looking for you."
"Can we stop by the clothing store for a moment? I need to buy some comfortable shirts or pants to wear while I wait for my father in the hospital," Nathalie said hesitantly.
"No need," Nicholas said quickly. "Just tonight you can sleep in your father's room for the last time, but starting tomorrow you must come to my house. I will prepare everything you need there and you can ask for anything if you need anything. George will take care of it for you."
"B-but I want--"
"There's a bag in the trunk, filled with new clothes that I think will suit you. I've prepared them for you. Now I'll take you to the hospital and pick you up again tomorrow."
Nathalie swallowed, thinking that Nicholas had prepared everything for her, even when they hadn't started anything yet.
"Thank you, Nicholas," Nathalie said sincerely.
"You're welcome," Nicholas replied.
He got into the car that George had already opened for him and Nathalie saw him wince as he got into the car.
"Nicholas, are you in pain? I saw you holding back the pain when you got into the car," Nathalie said carefully.
Nicholas patted his thigh lightly. "This is just the effect of an accident I had many years ago. My leg was broken and it took a long time to heal, because the fracture was quite severe. I had surgery many times, but the effects are still often felt until now, especially when I feel tired."
"Did you have to take painkillers when it happened?"
"Sometimes, if the pain is unbearable. According to the doctor, there is a fracture that pierces the muscle and if it is removed, the muscle will tear and be difficult to recover. I should have had another surgery last year, but the doctor was worried that the muscle that was penetrated by the fracture would be even more damaged if the bone was forcibly removed."
There was a tired and sad tone in Nicholas' voice. "I guess, I have to be friends with this pain for the rest of my life and undergo boring therapies."
Unconsciously, Nathalie reached out and squeezed Nicholas' hand gently.
"It's okay. You are a strong and resilient person. You will always be able to get through anything," Nathalie said. "When we get married, I will help you get through the pain, even if it's just reminding you not to get too tired or taking you to therapy so you don't get bored."
Nicholas turned to her with an amused expression. The way his dark blue eyes stared at Nathalie made her feel she was going to melt anytime soon.
Nicholas sighed and looked down at Nathalie's hands on top of his hand.
He turned his hand and held Nathalie's hand tightly.
"I think we can easily adjust to each other, Nate. I feel optimistic."
Nathalie felt her heart beating faster, but strangely, she felt Nicholas's grip made her feel warm and her mood light.
She smiled. "Yeah, I feel the same way, Nicholas. I guess, I'm glad that I met you in my difficult time."
Nathalie squeezed Nicholas' hand gently, before letting go. Something felt missing, but she shouldn't get used to it because what was between them was not at all romantic. It's business.
The journey back to the hospital went by too quickly for Nathalie. She wished she could have spent more time in the car with Nicholas, but unfortunately, George had already pulled over at The Grand Care hospital driveway.
"Sir, we are here," George said.
Nathalie's hand had just reached for the door handle, when her phone rang. She took it out of her jacket pocket and saw Charles' name displayed on the screen.
She stared at her phone, letting it continue ringing, then looked up and stared at Nicholas.
"I already blocked him, but I thought, for the divorce, I might need to talk to him, so I unblocked him again. Can I block him again now? Permanently?" Nathalie asked.
Nicholas nodded. "Yes. Just block him. You don't need to contact him anymore. Not only is it unnecessary because all the divorce matters will be handled by my lawyer, more than that, I don't like you talking to him anymore!" Nicholas said firmly.
Nathalie smiled faintly and obediently blocked Charles' number. She showed her phone to Nicholas. "I've blocked it."
Nicholas smirked. "Good. George will find you a new number and phone for you. You don't need to keep anything related to Charles from now on."
Nathalie nodded. She felt a sense of pleasure creep into her heart, seeing the possessive attitude that Nicholas showed.
Oh come on, Nate, of course he's possessive, this is a billion-dollar business for him and you are his accomplice, Nathalie said scolding herself for the feeling of pleasure she felt.
"George, take Nathalie upstairs," Nicholas said. "Bring the bag in the trunk too."
"Oh, no need," Nathalie said quickly. "I can take it and go upstairs myself. Don't bother."
"George will take you upstairs, Nate," Nicholas said firmly.
Nathalie looked into his eyes and a wave of curiosity washed over her.
"Nicholas, can I ask you a question?" Nathalie asked.
"You're doing it," Nicholas responded with a smile.
Nathalie smiled too, realizing that Nicholas was teasing her. "No, I mean, this is about you and Charles. What happened between you two that you became rivals? You were best friends in college, right? Charles never told me when I asked about you."
Nicholas chuckled sarcastically. "Of course he wouldn't tell you. Between the two of us, he's the traitor. Looking at you now, I think he does have a habit of betraying those closest to him. Two-faced and cheating."
Nathalie pondered. "I guess you're right."
She remembered what she said to her father, that at first she had a crush on Nicholas, but ended up dating Charles because he helped Nathalie.
"If only you had warned me about Charles, when we were in college," Nathalie said.
Nicholas touched Nathalie's wrinkled forehead. "Don't think about it. It was a long time ago and I'm sure that if I had said something at that time, you would have only been mad at me. You really loved Charles at that time, right?"
"But, actually I also-- ah, never mind," Nathalie said, wanting to say that what Nicholas said was not entirely true.
She opened the car door and got out. "Thank you, Nicholas. Be careful driving home later. Bye."
Seeing Nathalie walking into the hospital, accompanied by George who was carrying the bag, Nicholas took a deep breath.
"Not only did you betray me, Charles, but you also hurt her. You couldn't keep your promise, so I'm going to take back what should have been mine a long time ago. Just watch, I'll make you regret your stupidity and betrayal!"
Charles PoV"How?""Mrs. Marla, go to your father-in-law and tell him about what happened between you and Ms. Nathalie. She was rude and made Mr. Hardy Adams shocked and fainted," said Alex, my personal assistant. "His condition deteriorated rapidly and required immediate medical attention. There were many witnesses when Mrs. Marla attacked Mr. Hardy.""She did something like that? How could she?" I asked in disbelief."I never thought she would do such a senseless thing!"I didn't understand what was on Marla's mind. Why would she go to Nathalie's father and bother him, isn't it clear that I have divorced Nathalie and will soon marry her daughter.I didn't really feel comfortable with my future mother-in-law before, because I thought that she made Gina a money maker, so that Giba had to work hard to fulfill her needs and desires continuously, even though she was still young and healthy to work on her own. However, I never thought badly and thought she would do something like that."A
Nathalie PoV"Are you comfortable here, Dad?" I asked, while adjusting the blanket on my father's feet."Yes, very comfortable," my father replied while taking a deep breath. "The air is fresh and smells of leaves and clean water."I looked towards the garden next to the pavilion. The large windows in my father's room spread the fresh aroma from the garden into my father's room.Nicholas placed my father in the VVIP pavilion, a special pavilion usually used by officials, wealthy businessmen, even ministers and presidents when they were sick and needed treatment. He did it without much delay and I, although feeling embarrassed, knew that protesting would be useless. Nicholas was not the type of person who would listen to objections if he had a wish.He did everything quickly and when I found out, everything was fine and my dad was in a comfortable and better place."This place must be very expensive, Nathalie," my father said. "They even provide special nurses and guards in each room."
"Do you want me to clean him up, miss?" George asked Nathalie, watching Charles standing in a daze in the apartment yard."No need, George, just leave him be. I think what I said to him earlier was enough to shake him up," Nathalie replied."Okay. Luckily Mr. Nicholas didn't come along and see him bothering you. If he had, I don't know what Mr. Nicholas would have done to Charles," George said quietly."I'll tell Nicholas later. I promised myself that I wouldn't hide anything from him, especially if it was about Charles. He's helped me enough and I've made a pact with him," Nathalie said softly."Yes, ma'am, I understand," George replied softly. "It's best that you don't hide anything from Mr. Nicholas after you've been with him.""How did you know I was in the apartment?" Nathalie asked in surprise."Mr. Nicholas asked me to pick you up at the hospital, but when I got there, Nurse Lucia said that you had gone back to the apartment to get your things," George replied.Nathalie stared
Nathalie's presentation made a good impression on the Professor and with a very small difference in grades, she ranked first in the marketing course. Nicholas was in second place. Both concepts were considered very good, but Nathalie's was considered more friendly, because it also took into account the value of housing ownership by the lower middle class. When the professor praised Nathalie's presentation, she could feel Nicholas' sharp gaze piercing her sharply."Ah, Nathalie, shouldn't you and Nicholas be in the same group?" asked Arnold, the class president. "Why are you and him working alone?""Oh," Nathalie replied while looking at Nicholas. She deliberately raised her voice. "I don't like working with people who are too confident that their ideas will be the best, so that before they even start, they are already afraid that their ideas will be stolen."The corner of Nathalie's eye saw Nicholas' eyebrows furrow, and she smirked. Her friends were amazed at Nathalie's challenging a
Eight years ago, Harlington University participated in a clean-up drive by the beach. Many students signed up for it because it earned them extra credit.Nathalie and her friend Sandra had just finished picking up trash by the shores when Nathalie said, "I am so thirsty. This scorching heat is going to melt me if I don't get a drink right now!""I'm already soaked in sweat," Sandra said, fanning herself. "Let's go to the bar to get a drink."They had surrendered their collected trash to another school representative before going to the floating restaurant and bar. The bar was crowded by the the students and other tourists passing by around the beach. When Nathalie and Sandra made it to the bar and restaurant, she bumped into two famous, celebrity-like men in her college. Nicholas Grand and Charles Frederick.Nathalie had just learned how famous they were, especially Nicholas Grand. He is a Grand, a noble family that has been in the top ten richest families in America for the past tw
Back to the present. At Grand's Enterprises Headquarters."They've started?" Nicholas asked George."I think so," George replied with a knowing smile. "They started the meeting an hour early. Panicking."Nicholas smirked and pushed the door open quietly. All the people in the meeting room, who were busy arguing with each other, stared at Nicholas who had just arrived."Why did you just come?" asked Andy Grand, Nicholas' father. He is upset."Wasn't the meeting notice for eight? It's only eight minutes past seven," Nicholas said calmly. "I have other work to be done."Andy snorted. What his son said was true and he knew very well that Nicholas was a punctual person."This is the third project the Big Construction Firm has taken from us. All they took was the big projects.""They can offer lower prices than us because they also have metal factories, so that becomes a subsidy for development.""It isn't just the bid!" Andy said. "From what I have gathered, the Big Construction Firm offe
"I'll accompany you," Nathalie said, grabbing her bag. "I'm ready."Nicholas's brows furrowed. "What do you mean, you'll accompany me? Didn't you promise to accompany your father for a check-up today?""The time has been postponed until tomorrow," Nathalie answered lightly. "I'll visit him after you finish therapy."Nicholas shook his head, "But therapy will--""Come on, Nicholas, didn't I tell you that I'll accompany you? I don't like you making me go back on my word."Nicholas was stunned to hear Nathalie's words. Why did he become the guilty party when he just didn't want to burden Nathalie. He sighed and finally nodded. "Okay, whatever you want, Nate."Nathalie smiled. "Let's go!""Wait," Nicholas held her back, grabbing Nathalie's arm and holding her back. "I forgot to grab my cane.""Ah, wait, I'll get it. I know where you keep it," Nathalie said. She went to the living room and returned with the wooden cane that Nicholas usually used when his legs hurt. The cane was usually pla
Towards evening, after accompanying Hardy to dinner and waiting for him to go to sleep, Nicholas and Nathalie returned home.Lyle was already waiting for them in the hospital yard when they came out and quickly opened the door, taking over Nicholas' cane."Are your legs no longer sore?" Nathalie asked."No," Nicholas replied. "I took my medicine earlier, after lunch."Nathalie nodded and they were silent throughout the journey, enjoying the comfortable silence, because of each other's presence. After arriving home, Nathalie immediately sat on the living room sofa, stretching her sore legs.Madam Olla approached her. "You must be very tired. Do you want me to make you a warm drink? Chamomile tea would be delicious."Nathalie looked up and took Madam Olla's hand with a grateful look. "Yes, I would love to, Madam, you are very understanding."Madam Olla smiled and patted Nathalie's hand gently, then went to the kitchen.Nicholas entered accompanied by Lyle. He raised his eyebrows, seein
Andy paced back and forth angrily. He still wanted to scold Leon, but he couldn't bear to look at Lilian's eyes that were already very swollen from crying too much."Dad, please, listen to my explanation first," Leon said carefully. "I'm willing to give up my position to Nicholas, with certain considerations.""Tsk!" Andy snapped angrily. "Why did you do that stupid thing, Leon? You've never been too interested in women, why are you now trying to seduce Nicholas' girlfriend?""Honey, please, don't keep getting angry," Lilian said in a hoarse voice. "Can you listen to what your son has to say?"Andy exhaled loudly and sat down, slumping back against the sofa.Nicholas and Natalie had gone home and Grandpa Jerome went straight to his room, not saying anything to Andy or Leon at all. However, the look in the old man's eyes clearly implied great anger and the three of them felt afraid."I just wanted to test Nathalie," Leon said. "I'm suspicious of her. We know that Nicholas has been ask
The CCTV footage clearly showed what happened in the hallway.Leon's face was burning with shame. The pain in his groin was still throbbing, as was his shin that was kicked by Nathalie, and his face was also very sore after being beaten by Nicholas."Tomorrow morning, I will make sure you become the main topic in the mass media, Leon," Nicholas said sarcastically. "The CEO of Grand Enterprise tried to harass his brother's lover.""What do you mean, Nicholas?" Andy snapped. "Do you want to embarrass our family?"Nicholas stared at his father with a look full of hatred. He slammed the table, until everyone was shocked, except for Grandpa Jerome, who remained calm watching the interaction between his son, daughter-in-law, and grandson. When shocked, Nathalie spontaneously put her hand on Nicholas' thigh and it did not escape Grandpa Jerome's gaze. He also saw how Nicholas' head fell back."Dad, what do you mean I want to embarrass this family?" Nicholas asked sharply. "Leon was the one
Nathalie wasn't afraid of anything. Let Grandpa Jerome live with her and Nicholas in the Grand Mansion and see how they interacted. So far, everything between Nathalie and Nicholas had been natural and straightforward. There was no awkwardness or fake behavior.Maybe, it was fortunate that Nathalie and Nicholas had known each other since they were in college and even though they weren't close at that time, their relationship wasn't bad either. After talking, Grandpa Jerome invited Nathalie back to the living room, where the others were still gathered.Andy and Lilian looked at Nathalie suspiciously, while Leon seemed to be thinking about something. The conversation that was taking place felt stiff, as if forced, but Nathalie didn't want to show that she was feeling tense.Nathalie and Nicholas had talked about this before, even anticipating what kind of atmosphere might occur. So, this wasn't a big problem to deal with.Nicholas mostly talked to Grandpa Jerome, occasionally with his f
When she arrived at the White Grand mansion, Nathalie's eyes widened. The classic-style building in front of her eyes was even twice as big and grander than Nicholas' Grand mansion.Nicholas grabbed Nathalie's hand and put it on his arm. "Are you ready?"Nathalie took a few breaths, patted Nicholas' hand, then stomped her right foot and lifted her chin. "Let's go!" -- she said gallantly.Nicholas smiled because even though Nathalie was like that, her voice sounded shaky. The Grand family had gathered in the living room when Nicholas and Nathalie entered."Good evening everyone," said Nicholas. He nodded to everyone in front of him, as did Nathalie. "As requested by grandfather, I brought my lover, Nathalie Darren to formally introduce herself to you.""Good evening everyone," greeted Nathalie politely. "Although we have met twice before, I feel the need to formally introduce myself again. My name is Nathalie Darren Adams, but I rarely use my father's name. Thank you for the invitation
Nathalie PoVMy hands were clammy. I felt so nervous right now, that I had to wipe my hands with tissues several times. On the dining table there were already lots of wads of tissue that I had used.Nicholas saw my nervousness and he took my hand, rubbing my palm gently."It's okay," he said. "I'm by your side. I won't let anyone bother you."Technically, I had already met grandfather Jerome Grand, and the couple Andy and Lilian Grand, before NSync's opening a few days ago. When I was having dinner with Nicholas in the restaurant, after we met with Charles and Gina in the Shark Fin restaurant, the three of them also came to the same restaurant as us and Nicholas introduced me as his girlfriend.Grandfather Jerome was friendly to me, while Andy Grand, Nicholas' father, gave me a questioning look, and his wife didn't say anything, just stared at me coldly.Still, I could read their confusion and surprise. They definitely wouldn't have thought that Nicholas already had a girlfriend and
After returning to the Grand Mansion, Nathalie felt her heart grow closer to Nicholas. She wondered if Charles had deliberately separated her from Nicholas eight years ago so that he didn't say anything about the pineapple pie incident when Nathalie asked him.He already knew Nathalie had misunderstood, but didn't say anything about it.If Charles had been honest with her at that time and said that it was Nicholas' gift and that it was actually Nicholas who had saved Nathalie, maybe she wouldn't have ended up dating and marrying Charles.Maybe Nathalie would have waited until Nicholas returned from his college leave and asked him out first.Besides, since their fight in marketing class, Nathalie had actually started to like paying attention to Nicholas, it was just that her sense of prestige made her cover it up with an indifferent attitude. In the end, Nathalie realized that she had indeed chosen the wrong man. Charles had lied to her from the start and instead destroyed her dreams a
"Who's that?" Charles asked, looking at a car that had just pulled out of the gate of his house, just as his car arrived."Ah, it's just a man who got lost. He's old, so his eyes can't see street names and house numbers clearly. He's going to our neighbor's down the block," Gina replied cheerfully. She held Charles' arm affectionately. "How's your work, is it going?"Charles slumped down on the sofa and exhaled loudly. Everything was a mess now. Who would have thought that Nathalie would start her own company and her clients would switch to her?"My clients ran to Nathalie's new company," Charles muttered wearily. "This could be bad if I don't get them back soon."Gina was surprised to hear Charles' words and she took Charles' hand and kissed it softly."I'm sorry," Gina said weakly. "I'm really useless and can't help you. I can only conceive and give birth to your child."Charles looked at Gina, feeling a little touched by her words. He hugged Gina and kissed her forehead."I'm so d
A month later, Nicholas and Natalie's company opened. The opening ceremony went smoothly, and even Charles' former customers came.In the newly rented store in Harlington Metropolitan Mall, elegant flowers and wide white ribbons dotted the entire area. Cocktail tables were neatly placed outside the store, and waiters brought expensive champagne and snacks."Dear guests, today we gather to witness the opening of NSync Company, an interior design company, which is a collaboration between Ms. Nathalie and Mr. Nicholas Grand. Today's event will be led by our beautiful and talented CEO, Ms. Nathalie Darren. We invite Ms. Darren to give a speech, before cutting the ribbon," the host called out enthusiastically.Everyone applauded, welcoming Nathalie who came up to the podium, enthusiastically."Thank you all for being here," Nathalie said with a big smile on her lips. "It is an honor to welcome you all and hope that in the future we and all the supporting crew of NSync Company, can help an
"Are you ready?"Nathalie nodded. She looked at Nicholas with an admiring look.Nicholas looked handsome in a dark blue suit, over a light blue shirt without a tie. He looked formal, but also casual. Very handsome, Nathalie said to herself.Nicholas also looked at Nathalie with an uncertain feeling. Why is she so beautiful? Look at her white shoulders and neck, so smooth like marble and the color of her cheeks and lips are already pink without the need for lipstick and blush on.Nathalie wore a light blue dress, matching the nuances of Nicholas' clothes. The knee-length A-line model of her dress, showed her calves and legs that were as long as grains of rice. She wore a white gold necklace with a tear-shaped stone pendant, dark blue, a ring, and little amulet in her ear."Beautiful," Nicholas said, nodding. "You always look so beautiful."Nathalie was surprised to hear Nicholas' sudden compliment, she felt her heart start beating faster and had to hold her handbag tightly so as not t
