JOJO'S POV

Six days ago, Jeremy Vongov walked out of my life and I didn't follow him. The piece of paper he forced into my hand is collecting dust inside the bedstand drawer.

The hospital just approved my clearance, declaring me fit for the real world.

“You ready?” Aunt Sherry asks from the door.

“Yeah, I can't wait to be out of here.” I start to leave the room but stop at the drawer and chuck the stupid piece of paper into the back of my jeans.

After this, no more.

At the parking lot, standing out from everyone around them, I see Mallory and Kendrick holding up colorful placards that respectively read:

WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG, GINGER!!!

WELCOME BACK TO THE WORLD OF CRAZINESS AND HOMEWORK🙂🙂…

I turn to Aunt Sherry in shocked laughter and she nods with a wide grin, “Go on.”

I drop the bags in my grip to start sprinting towards my besties. They drop the placards and start running towards me and I can feel the joy bubbling out of me until it is suddenly taken away.

JEREMY'S POV Six days ago, Josephine Dukes ordered me out of her life and I called her bluff to her face. Thing is, she wasn't joking when she said it. She wanted me gone. She didn't care about the truth if it had my name involved in it. My head's been jumbled up ever since. My feelings soured to the gutters. I can't explain the deep longing inside of me. I can't explain the guilt that eats at me every time I close my eyes. So I resort to Vodka to numb the aching hole that has become so glaringly open in my heart. And the alcohol led me to a place of answers. “Let him in.” I shrug off the security guards as the long glass door slides open. “William Dukes,” I announce as I enter the spacious office. “Do you mind?” I sit on the leather chair opposite him without waiting for his approval. “And you're… Maxim's Bastard?” “Ouch!” I hold a hand to my chest. “Very hurtful, Mr Dukes. You almost pierced a hole in this stony heart.” There's a soft knock on the door and a young male in

JOJO'S POV “Let me out of here!” An annoying female voice shrills followed by some thumping against metal. “Shut up,” I groan against the excruciating pain all over my body. Something hits my head and my eyes flash on the provocator. “Wake up Bonehead.” She glares at me from the other side of the moving van we're trapped in and I know with every part of me that if she was just an inch closer, her soul would be staring up at this scene as it helplessly floats towards the place it belongs to. Hell. I banish the thoughts from my head and fix her a smile, “It's such a disappointment to see you, Claire.” “The feeling's mutual, Josephine. Come to think of it, you really seem familiar.” She arches a thoughtful eyebrow, “Like we’ve met before. And we might've been friends.” “Shut up, Claire. The idea of that sounds nauseating.” The van we're in is bigger and older than the one I was dragged into at the hospital and there are lots of tools hanging on torn nets along the sides of the

  • Devoured By His Enemy Eyes   Claire Eastwood

“Let me go!” I keep screaming and fighting for my freedom as men carry me onto the lower deck of the yacht. My father has one of these in Seattle. He called it Love, who was one of his many very young, very flashy side pieces and Mom didn't bat an eyelash. She never does because her lashes are too expensive. But she'd keep tabs on them, waiting patiently to pay them off after the third month because no side piece deserved to stick around after the three month time limit. She'd use extreme measures when they got too greedy. Blackmailing, spamming, bullying, sharing explicit videos, and even physical assault were just to ensure they stayed away after kidnapping, torture and other stuffs I'd rather not talk about. And in Josephine's case, what can I say other than I learn from the very best. If I got carried away back at the warehouse, it was because the skank didn't know when to shut her mouth. She needed a good lesson on manners and since her parents didn't teach her, I took it up

  • Devoured By His Enemy Eyes   New Life

JOJO'S POV I wake up the next day with horrific bruises all over my body. My face was fairly safe because I'd protected them with my hands when Claire was beating me up though I still had a swollen jaw and bleeding nose. My torso had boot-sized purple bruises around my ribs and stomach region, there were bruises everywhere with varying shades of color that ranged from blue to purple to red to black but that was the least of my problems. I couldn't find the Bradawl I'd hidden in my pillow the night before and after destroying all the pillows, the mattress of the bed and even ransacking the entire room, I knew they'd taken it. Feeling defeated, I trod into the bathroom to wash up and came out to see a bright little sundress neatly lying on the ruined bedding. A voice speaks from the telephone, “As I said before, everything in the room was made to your pleasure. There'll be no replacement of furniture or bedding for the room. Breakfast will be by the dock in ten minutes.” I pick u

Mal? Malle?!” She nudges me and I turn sharply. “Don't call me that.” “You seemed lost.” “No I wasn't, you were saying something about… Kingston.” “Oh yeah, some steroids were found in his locker so he got kicked out of the football team.” “That’s sad...” “Yeah, and Claire hasn't posted anything on her socials. Come to think of it, she hasn't posted anything since she got suspended.” “Yeah so sad,” I mutter and a book whacks the back of my head. “Ow!” I scowl at her. “You'll end up drilling holes in his head if you don't stop.” She says, ignoring my glare. “He deserves more than a hole, Ken.” “Jeremy Vongov is the only other person in the underworld who can help us find Jo. We do need him.” She tries to reason with me but all I see is red. JoJo's blo

  • Devoured By His Enemy Eyes   Empires and Threats

JEREMY'S POV I'm heading towards my car after the confrontation with Kai and his flavor of the week when former principal Dennis comes out of the exit. “A word Mr Vongov.” He says and slowly walks towards his office. Dennis has a slight limp in his walk from his days in the army. He's in his late eighties and a distinguished professor with years of academic recognition and exploits that are evident on the walls of his office. He never married after losing his high school sweetheart when they were eighteen. She’d gone to visit him in the army for the weekend and she returned with the flu. He didn't get the news until he was discharged from the army, eight months later. He blamed himself for her death and the scar never left him. He decided to pursue her dreams of becoming an English professor notwithstanding his skin color and he ended up falling in love with education. He retired some years ago and has been living out his life in a retirement home for the elderly. I follow hi

  • Devoured By His Enemy Eyes   TONIA BLACKWOOD

I run out of the park, wiping my wet eyes and almost getting hit by a delivery truck as I cross the road. I end up in a grocery store, looking for my favorite brand of chocolate when a boulder bumps into me and sends me sprawling on the floor, luckily no one is around to witness my embarrassment until the boulder speaks. “Blackwood?” I look up at the boulder— a male who's built like a boulder and gasp. “Justin Kingston?” He pulls me up with a tug and I fall into his chest. Curse my clumsy self. I push away from him with my hands on his chest which is rock solid. “Sorry.” “It's alright, I didn't feel a thing.” He winks at me and I smile. “Let me guess… Jock?” “Come on!” He throws his hands up. “Am I that obvious?” He teases me and bends to pick up my shopping cart. “Someone's in a mood.” He comments as he puts back the candies, popcorn, whipped cream, and sugary bits into my cart.” I flash him a wide smile, “It's that time of the month again.” He arches an eyebrow, “Oh

I want to know more about his tragic past.” “Don't you have records for that?” “You're not getting the point, Tonia.” “No, you aren't getting my point, officer.” “Detective.” “I don't care. I do know as an aspiring attorney that the police or anyone affiliated with the force has no right to barge into the home of a civilian without a proper warrant.” “Are you sure this is the road you want to take, Ms. Blackwood?” I ignore his question, “I don't know how he became a person of interest but I can vouch with my life that Kila would never harm a female.” “I'll go now Ms. Blackwood but before you bring your life into this, remember how much Jeremy Vongov has changed from the sweet broken boy you met when you were ten.” “You put a bug on me?” “Finding the girl is more important than any lawsuits I'll get in the future.” “That gives you no right whatsoever!” “That girl! is just a year younger

JOJO’s POV Two Months Later… They were graduating high school today but Josephine would always go back to that day each time she passed the workshop. She and over three hundred graduates passed by the workshop today but no one spoke about it. They had all forgotten. It felt like they'd forgotten everything linked to him along with him and that made Josephine sick to her stomach. One month ago, She, Junnev, and Jeremy were hanging on for dear lives in the hospital. Of their three cases, Jeremy’s was the most baffling because apart from the external injuries he suffered from the accidents and the cement, the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with him. So why wouldn't he wake up? They closed off Jeremy in a special room for “intense observation purposes,” that's what they called it. They kept him there until he was cleared for flight to be transported back to America. Junnev knee joints were broken from the weight of concrete. He’d woken up during the surgery, his tone mighty

Kendrick tried to stand but her ears were ringing so badly from the explosion so she used her hands to cover them and suddenly there was a semblance of peace in the chaos that had become the world. Kendrick blinked debris and dust from her eyes as she looked around, trying to find a familiar face. She couldn't see past the dust that had formed from the explosion but she could hear the awful screams and the rapid-fire gunshots and those sounds would stay with her forever. Bullets were flying left and right and Kendrick knew she had to get out. She needed to get out of there before she got hit by a stray bullet or before the ceiling caved in or before she died from a heart attack so she put one leg in front of the other and trudged along. The dust was settling and she could see certain parts of the building clearer. She looked around the unconsciously fed bodies of men to see Jeremy and Junnev covered with debris and as she got closer to them, her mouth widened in horror. They wer

Jeremy couldn't comprehend when the plan started falling apart but it had in fact… fallen. Lying in front of him were two bodies, Josephine was lying on the dirty ground, blood pouring out of her chest, yet she tried to sit up. Jeremy ran to her and took her trembling body into his arms, trying to apply enough pressure on her wound but crimson just kept flowing to the ground, steadily forming a pool of red around them. She’d run into the line of fire as he shot at her kidnapper. Why did she do that? Why? He racked his brain for a tangible reason but came up empty. Next to her was the masked kidnapper, they called her The Mistress. He had heard tales about her horrible doings since he'd been a tween, each one more fearsome than the last yet here she was, fallen by a mere bullet. She was dead. “Kila!” His father's men called from behind and he whipped around to see Maxim holding onto his bleeding neck. Apparently, the Mistress had decided his father would be her last victim.

“You are more like a pirate than an actual cop,” Junnev sparked after Burkely ended the call. “I am retired, Kid. Besides, all my years of following the law and reporting everything I saw left me without a wife, a roof over my head, and eventually a Jobless alcoholic with no future except nabbing one man.” “That's…” “Pathetic, I know.” Burkely fished out another stick of cigarette. “I'm a living, breathing bundle of addiction!” Burkely finished his tirade with his arms spread apart– eagle form on the sidewalk with a wide smile, pasted on his face as horns blared from vehicles passing by them. Junnev tugged his hands down and hissed through clenched teeth, “Control yourself, Old man. We don't want to draw any unwanted attention to ourselves.” Burkely shrugged out of Junnev’s hold and glared up at the kid, “Don’t call me an old man. You know my name, so use it.” “I'll call you whatever the fuck I want since you are the one who keeps forgetting,” Junnev responded with angry sparks

Something was wrong and Doc was certain, it had something to do with Josephine. The Dukes couple and their men were currently situated close to the bushes, away from the main road. Their men were well hidden with their guns and rifles in the surrounding bushes while waiting for the signal from their bosses who were inside a parked reporter van down the road. Doc was furious, anxious, and more so, scared as she got out of the van and paced down the length of the road. She tried again and again to get a hold of Jeremy Vongov but his line was switched off. “I told you we shouldn't have trusted him.” Will quipped from the back of the vehicle. “This is no time to point fingers, Will. Something bad has happened and we need to do something.” “How about you get Mallory and Kendrick and their friends involved? Get them to track down Jeremy.” Doc turned away from her husband, “It's too dangerous Will, why’d think we've been knowingly throwing them off course? Our hackers will easily h

“There was something in the air,” Jeremy thought to himself as he stalked to the back SUV where his father was already seated. Maxim looked composed and rather cheerful as he watched his son get into the vehicle from his side eye. “I told you no one was to touch her,” Jeremy growled in a chilling tone. “Oh, stop your grumbling, we have a big day ahead of us.” Maxim waved him off and grabbed the glass of vodka on the armrest, taking a healthy swallow. Jeremy schooled back his features and settled for a stiff smile, “Yes, we do Father.” “Good,” The vehicle sets in reverse and slowly pulls out of the driveway then it accelerates as the driver moves down the road and silence settles in the vehicle. Jeremy uses the quiet to finalize his plans by sending out a few texts and receiving a confirmed reply. “Tell me boy, how did your talk with the redhead go?” “That's none of your business.” “Humor me.” Jeremy locks his phone and focuses on his father, “Why do you care?” “Because yo

  • Devoured By His Enemy Eyes   The Godmother

JOJO'S POV The truth hurts, doesn't it? Jeremy steps into the room right after his father slips out and goes into a full-on wrath when he sees me in chains and I want to slap him. I want to punch him so hard in his nutsack that he feels something's wrong down there each time he takes a step. Motherfucker, I want to stump on his ugly heart and crack it into a thousand tiny pieces. Pieces so tiny, they'd be impossible to place back. I want to break him. So badly it hurts to sit there quietly and do nothing. Which is what I’m doing when the chains are finally gone from my wrists, instead I ask, “What happened when you were eight years old?” He stiffens and his eyes turn into a void. “Jeremy?” I call but it's like he can't hear me. “Jeremy?!!” I call louder, shaking him a little. “Uh, Josephine?” “I asked you a question.” I probe, not letting up. Maxim turned to Yuri, “Make sure he's detained properly.” “Another safe house?” “No, he'll come with me but I want him restrained, twice as much as before.” “I'll get it done, boss.” “I want an audience with the girl.” “I'll arrange it, boss.” “Good and make sure my son doesn't know about the little visit.” Yuri nods his acquiescence just as Jeremy bounds into the room and Yuri subtly leaves. “To what do I owe this pleasure, father.” Unsurprisingly, his bastard of an heir didn't look very happy to see his father after locking him up in a house for more than twenty-four hours. “Did you tell the girl?” He bares his teeth at his father, “That has nothing to do with you.” “The fucking ingrat
