Today is my first day of work. I look in the mirror to have a final look at my outfit. I'm wearing white trousers, a cream long-sleeve, with my stilettos. I nodded at the mirror, satisfied with my looks, then I grab my Hermes bag and I'm good to go.
I'm excited but nervous at the same time. It was my first time working in a company that is not owned by my parents. I know that the treatment will be different compared to when I was working in my company.
In Zobel Group of companies. the employees were friendly and lenient towards me. Somehow you can feel that they want to get your favor though, not all employees are like that. But some are genuine in giving their service.
Jenny, one of the HR started to tour and introduce me to all departments. Before we went to the creative department, Jenny took me to David's office.
The first thing that got my attention was his office, it looks sleek and neat. Then I look at the very handsome man sitting on his office chair. Gosh! My boss is so handsome, it makes me more excited to work here.
I imagine all the romance novels that I read where the boss fell in love with her employee, it's a perfect scenario for me and David. I guess I have a new crush now!
Having a crush is not new to me. As Mara always commented on me, I easily get attracted to handsome guys, I have long-list of my crushes but I never had a boyfriend. It's easy for me to like someone but find it difficult to fall in love. The first and only guy that I fell in love with was Mara's husband.
"Welcome on your first day, Yelle!"
"Thank you, David!"
"Are you excited?" He asked.
My eyes twinkled. "Super!"
He chuckled and turned to Jenny. "You can go back to your office. I'll introduce Yelle to the creative department."
Jenny nodded and respectfully went out of his office.
"Let's seat first. I will be discussing something with you." David said in a formal but friendly tone.
When were both settled, David started our discussion.
"I don't know if I already told you about the plan for the expansion of our business this year."
"No, you haven't."
He nodded his head. "As I said, our company is expanding the business year. Aside from ready-made furniture, customize furniture and interior design services, we want to offer architecture and engineering services."
"James found the perfect partner for this expansion. Are you familiar with Cabello International Corporation?"
I nodded. "Yes, they are the rising architecture and engineering company. Our company worked with them with our new mall in Cebu."
"Good to know. What do you think of them?"
"I met Penelope during the Cebu project. I can say that she's an outstanding person. She was good with negotiation and implementation of the project. I personally like her not just for her talent but also for being a strong and independent woman. I heard that her parents died at a young age and she had no choice but to handle their business alone. And she is great! She grew their business in just a few years." I honestly said.
Cabello International Corporation had been in the attention of the media because of her relationship with the Laertes heir. It almost damages her reputation but her talent will always speak for herself.
"You almost have the same comment as James. James also admired the owner of CIL." David said.
"Penelope is married though." I can't help but comment.
David chuckled. "Not in a romantic way, don't worry. Anyway, we had a meeting with them last week. And we are just waiting to finalize the contract before we announced our new partnership."
My eyes widen. What a nice choice.
"Why are you telling me all this?" I asked a bit confused.
I'm just a regular employee, not to mention a new one.
"We are considering you to sphere head the Asia account, especially in the Philippines since you already had prepared a portfolio," David explained.
"But I'm just a new employee. I don't think my colleagues will like the idea." I said.
"You might be new but you're the only interior designer here who has projects in the Philippines, plus we want your connection in the Philippines, of course after you prove yourself here. We are not sending you to your country right away, I know you have something you want to prove for yourself, the very reason why you chose to work here." David said in more detail.
I nodded. I get their point. As someone who grew up in the business world, I knew how connections give you a great advantage. I appreciate that they also considered why I chose to work here.
Also, I like the idea of handling the Asia account for JDLI.
"But I want you to keep this a secret. As I said, I was new here and I don't want my colleagues to have a wrong impression of me." I said.
"I understand. You don't need to worry about that. Also, it will take months or a year before we implement the whole project. We want to focus the expansion here first before we offer the full service in Asia."
David stood up and guide me to the door. "Shall we? It's time to introduce you to your department"
The employees look very busy. They stop working when they saw me and David entering the office.
David introduced me to the employees. They all welcome me with warm smiles, though I notice that some girls are looking at me intently, especially at my bag. I just shrugged.
Then we went to the head of the Interior design office.
“This is Hailey Smith, the head of Interior Design, and Hailey this is Yelle our new Interior designer.”
“Hi Ms. Smith, I'm Abriella Isla Zobel, I'm looking forward to working with you,” I said in a formal tone.
I heard that Hailey Smith is a close friend of David and Mr. Feria - I prefer to call the CEO by his surname than his name. I can’t help but think of an annoying guy whenever I hear the name, James.
Also, it was rumored that Hailey will soon be engaged to Mr. Feria. Though, these two never confirmed that they are in a romantic relationship. But the fact that Hailey chose to work here instead of working in their company somehow confirmed the rumor about him and the CEO.
Well, this girl is beautiful. I wouldn’t blame the CEO if he fell in love with her. I just hope that she's a nice boss since I will be under her.
“Nice bag! Where did you get it?”
I turned to the girl who asked me. “In the Hermes store?” I said like she was asking a dumb question.
“Oh yeah! What a dumb question, right? You must be rich! Anyway, I'm Hanah Garcia.” Hannah, my new colleague said.
“I'm Abriella Zobel, but you can just call me Yelle,” I said ignoring her remarks about me being rich.
Hannah’s eyes widen. “Zobel?! The owners of the elite malls in the Philippines?”
I creased. “How did you know that?” I asked curiously.
“Well, I'm half Filipino. I grew up there. My family moved here when I was in high school. But we visit our relatives there every 2-3 years.” She explained.
It added to my excitement to work here, knowing that I have a Filipino colleague.
“Wow! I'm so glad to know that you're also a Filipino. But can you keep my background a secret here?” I asked Hannah.
She gave me a thumbs up. “No worries. Your secret is safe with me. But to be sure, don't include your surname when you introduce yourself, because there are some Filipino employees here who might know your family name.”
I nodded and mouth thank you.
After our short conversation, Hannah started to brief me on my task. She was asked to do the briefing since her workplace is next to mine. After that, we both became busy with our work.
Hannah then invited me to join her and her friends for lunch. She introduces me to Monica and Edward. They are both half-Filipino. Monica is also an interior designer, while Edward is a furniture designer.
I offer to pay for our lunch as my way of thanking them. I brought them to my favorite restaurant near our office. Last night, I googled the list of restaurants near the office and saw my favorite restaurant on the list.
“Are you sure you are paying for us? The price of the food here is so expensive.” Edward said full of concern.
“Yes. This is one of my favorite restaurants, I'm sure you'll love the food here!” I said with excitement.
I saw Hannah shake her head.
When the meal was served, all the girls, including me began taking photos of our food. I also asked the waiter to take a picture of us.
I posted the photos on my personal I* with the caption, first lunch with my new friends and colleagues.
While we were eating, my phone got a notification. I opened it and saw James' name on it. He sends me a direct message on I*. I opened it out of curiosity. Since that night, I haven't got any messages or calls from him, except for his sudden visit to Mara’s house when I was sharing the news with them.
My eyes widen when I saw the content of his message. ‘Does that guy know you're married?’
"Are you okay?"I fake a smile. My heart started to beat fast. I look at my phone and read his message again.'Does that guy know you're married?'I look at it again and focus on the last word. Married. I was hoping that it was his typical annoying jokes. I am confident that he was able to cancel or stop the mayor from filing our marriage contract. Yes, I knew that the document we signed is real.I also knew how much we hate each other. I am sure that for James, I am the last person he will marry or I wouldn't be able to make it on his list. When I left for the US, I keep consoling myself that James will never allow our marriage to be legal. My hand was trembling while typing my reply.'What marriage are you talking about? I'm single!!!' I typed. My hands are still trembling while waiting for his reply."Hey, Yelle! Are you okay? You look pale." Edward asked me again.I look at them and saw their worried faces. I fake a smile again. "I'm good," I said.I received another notification
"You look happy." I smiled widely at Hannah and showed her the folder containing my first project. "Finally got my very first project!" I said with pure excitement.Hannah's eyes widen with excitement. "I'm happy for you girl! If you need any help, don't hesitate to ask me, I've very willing to help."I nodded and went to my chair. "Thank you! But do you know that our CEO is back?"Hannah moves her chair closer to me wearing a big smile on her face. "I know! He's already in his office. I can't wait to his handsome face."I suddenly got curious. I don't remember the face of our CEO. I saw his article once when I was in college. I know that he's handsome, I remember that I instantly put him on my crush list, but I have too many crushes and I don't remember the face of some of them. "Do you have his photo?" I asked Hannah. She nodded. "Of course, I have but it's better to see him in person. I have to warn you though, don't show your admiration when Ms. Hailey is around." I furrowed. "
"Why would I?"Hannah pinches me. I furrowed and turn to her then to the people around us. They were all stunned. David chuckled while Hailey is giving me a death glare.Shoot, did I say that out loud?! You and your big mouth, Yelle! Did I just talk back with my boss right? Shocks, am I getting fired?!I look carefully at James to check his reaction. But to my surprise, he just smirked at me. He then went closer to me. "May I remind you that I'm your boss now?" He said naughtily. I bit my lower lips and wanted to slap myself. This is so embarrassing, now people will be curious about me and James. I saw in my peripheral vision that Hailey's not liking everything that is happening. My brow crease. Wait, speaking of Hailey, I thought they are in a relationship or something. Why isn't she doing anything to make James from making fun of me? Killing me with her stares will not make James stop his scheme. I look at him and just nodded. Talking back will not do me any good. I might los
"I am not! I'm just worried because I know how much she loves you. And I kind of see myself in her." I don't understand why James can't love Hailey back. Except for her rage a while ago, Hailey is a good and competent person. I'm sure every man will like her. "Don't worry about Hailey. Soon she'll realize that the love that she felt for me is pure platonic." James said with full confidence.I look at him intently. How can he be sure that Hailey's feelings for him are not romantic? James smiles warmly at me. It was the first time he smile like that to me. He grabs my hand and squeezes it lightly. "As I said, Hailey is like a sister to me. I will never do anything to hurt her. You too will soon realize that what Hailey felt for me isn't romantic. There are different kinds of love, and it's not always romantic." I nodded. His words are so sincere, and I can't find myself disagreeing with him. "Why did you call me here in your office? You told me it's for business." I said to break t
"So you work in JDLI as an Interior Designer, and you finally got your first project today after a month of assisting your colleagues, and yet here you are drinking, I bet you feel a bit pressured and anxious since it's your first project." It was Kyle, the guy who went to me and introduce himself a while ago. I was surprised at how smoothly our conversation is going. I thought that his agenda was to hit on me like inviting me to a hotel for a one-night stand just like the common thing that guys in the bar do. But he was respectful and friendly. It feels like he was not here to flirt but to get to know me. "You can say that, but also I got some personal problems that I can't share with you for now," I said. I told Kyle the reason why I decided to move here and where my current job is. I didn't tell him about my problem with James and the chaos that he brought into the office which is the main reason why I'm here. I know that sometimes it's better to share your problem with a stran
"Is that so? Then let's call the love of your life." James pulled out his phone, his brow creased as he was searching for his brother's name. He was angry, I can sense it. But I can't understand why. He knew from the start the feelings I have for his brother. He knew that aside from pursuing my dream, I went here to move on. "Are you serious?! You will really call Andrew?! For what?!" I said panicking. He ignored me. His attention is on his phone. After three rings the video was on. I saw Andrew's face on the screen. "What's up?" Andrew greeted him. "I'm with Yelle. Are you having lunch?" He said casually. I froze on my sit. I don't know what to do. Will I greet him back or what? "Yes, I'm having lunch with my wife," Andrew said then I saw him looking at his wife full of love. My heart hurts, as always. But I was used to it. Moving on is not easy. I thought that once you accept the fact that you are not meant for each other, moving on will come out naturally. There are times
"Are you okay, girl?" I nodded and smiled at Hannah. "Hangover," I whispered. Hannah nodded and went back to work. I massage my temples. I feel like my head was about to explode. I badly need coffee, that's my best remedy for my hangover. I forgot to buy a caffe macchiato at Starbucks because I will be late for work. James is acting really weird. I can't believe that he made an effort to go to my unit just to remind me of how in love and happy Andrew is with Mara. As if I don't know that fact. After all these years, he still considers me a threat to the relationship between Mara and Andrew. Maybe because I'm very vocal to him about my feelings for his brother. But I never failed to assure him that I have no plan of stealing Andrew or ruining the marriage that Mara and Andrew has. Aside from my genuine love and care for Mara, I love their daughter so much, and I consider Tanya as my daughter. I will never do something to hurt Tanya. I will always choose to protect her. And if I
"I can make that happen."Hearing those words makes my heart flutter. Last night while I was drinking beer, I made a decision that I will need someone to help me to move on because some say that sometimes finding new love can mend a broken heart. I smirked at him. "Really? That's not gonna be easy." He looks at me intently and smiles. "It won't be easy but I know you are worth it." I bit my lower lip when I felt like my tears wanted to come out. Hearing those words from him warms my heart. I was so down last night after the video call with Mara and Andrew. I needed these words to regain my self-worth. Our food arrived just in time. We decided to eat first before we continue our conversation. "But before that, I need to tell you something," I said a bit nervous. If I want to open my heart to someone, I should tell him first about my situation with James. And yes, I decided to give Kyle a chance. He gave all his attention to me. "I'm ready."I heaved a heavy sigh before I start to
“Excuse me?!”What the hell is she talking about? Why would I ever name my future son Maru? That’s the last thing I’d do—never in a million years! In fact, I might just banish the name Maru from my list of future baby names. I can’t stand it!“Marry me.” He said in a whisper.“But I want Maru Ottave,” I whispered back.“I am Maru Ottave.” He said then he claimed my lips.Fudge! Why did that memory have to pop up now? This is all Mara’s fault!I glared at her. “Don’t say that again!”Mara and her husband just laughed. They think this is funny?! Ugh! I should have ignored the whole thing with their son’s name. Now it’s all backfiring on me.Mara and Andrew were busy tending their new born, while Tanya and I left in the living room. "Tada! Do you like it?" I asked Tanya while showing her the dress I bought in the US. I bought bunch of things for her. Of course I bought some for family, Mara, Andrew and their new baby. But most of my the things in my luggage are all the things I bought
“Mom, Dad, look who’s with me!”Luther and I had kept my transfer back to the Philippines a secret from our parents. We wanted to surprise them—and it was the reason my brother had extended his stay in the U.S., to bring me back with him.My mom gasped, her eyes welling up as she took me in. “Abrielle? Is it really you?”I smiled, warmth flooding me as I nodded. “Yes, Mom. I’m home.”She crossed the room in an instant, pulling me into a tight embrace. My dad followed, wrapping his arms around us as my mom held on like she’d never let go.My brothers stood off to the side, grinning at our little family reunion. Daniel, who had helped plan this surprise, looked especially pleased as he watched our parents’ joy.To celebrate, Daniel had reserved a table at a fine-dining restaurant. As we settled into our seats and began eating, conversation flowed easily, filled with laughter and updates on life.Midway through dinner, my dad looked at me, curiosity in his eyes. “So, how’s James? Did he
Finally, the day had come for us to return to our home country. My brother insisted on extending his stay so we could all go back together with Kyle.We arrived at the airport, the bustling terminal greeting us. My co-workers had already taken their flight back to the Philippines. My brother had upgraded my ticket to first class, but we had to change flights since the first class seats on the original one were fully booked. As we checked in, I spotted James entering the airport. My brow furrowed in confusion. What is he doing here? He was supposed to be on the same flight as the JDLI team.“You’re here,” my brother greeted James with a nod.James merely nodded back, his eyes darting to his watch repeatedly, as if waiting for someone.“Are you expecting someone?” I couldn’t help but ask.He shook his head, a small smirk tugging at his lips. “Why would you think that?”I shrugged casually. “You keep looking at your watch.”“Oh, that… I’m just checking the time. Our flight’s coming up so
"Yelle?"I startled but quickly composed myself before turning to face Kyle.He smiled nervously. "Yelle, will you be my girlfriend?" he asked again.I could see the sweat on his face.I already knew what he was planning when my brother handed me the blindfold, and I already knew my answer.I nodded and smiled. "Yes," I replied. His eyes widened, and he shouted, "Yes!" before pulling me into a hug.I chuckled and hugged him back, hearing my brother congratulate us in the background.I saw James mouth the word "Congratulations!" and even raise his glass as if offering a toast. Then he turned his attention back to the girl he was with. They seemed to be enjoying their conversation, and I even noticed him whisper something to her.Kyle released me from our hug, and we stepped down from the stage to join my brother."Congratulations, Yelle! You finally have a boyfriend!" he said, teasing me with a grin.I just smiled at him. My brother had been the one to help me decide to accept Kyle’s pr
"Are you serious?" I asked, bewildered.James smiled. "Why? Isn't this what you want?""Y-yes," I replied, frustrated with myself for stammering.I was confused. I couldn’t understand what James was thinking. He had always made it clear he didn’t like Kyle, he often sabotaging our dates. Now, he was acting supportive of my relationship with Kyle."Are you sure? Because I can see hesitation in your eyes," James said, reverting to his usual self.I rolled my eyes. "Of course not! I've always wanted to annul our marriage. We both know we don’t love each other, this whole thing was just a result of alcohol," I defended myself. He just smiled at me."Why are you suddenly being cooperative about this?" I couldn't help but ask, needing to understand his true intentions."Simple. Now that you're getting serious with that guy, I’m confident you won’t chase after my brother when we return to the Philippines," he replied with a casual shrug.I glared at him, my anger rising at his reasoning. His
"Luther! Stop pressuring Kyle!" I understand my brother’s point. Since I’m returning to the Philippines, there’s a good chance that the relationship Kyle and I are trying to build might not work out. Besides the challenges of a long-distance relationship, Kyle has a business to take care of here in the U.S. It would be selfish of me to ask him to leave his life here to join me in the Philippines.Kyle and I aren't even official yet. My brother should stop pressuring him; he has no obligation to me or anything. My brother shrugged. "You're not a fan of long-distance relationships, Yelle," he said matter-of-factly.I rolled my eyes. "But we're not official yet! He has no responsibility to me. Besides, I still have work here in the U.S., so we can still see each other. There's no need for him to follow me to the Philippines," I argued.Kyle smiled at me, his eyes softened as he spoke. "We could make our relationship official," he said, catching me off guard.I felt both stunned and pres
“Are you suggesting I’m playing favorites?” James’s voice cut through the tension, surprising both Athena and me.Athena and I exchanged startled glances, unaware that James had been listening.James strode over to us, fixing his gaze on Athena. "I'm sure you have an idea how we secured the mall project," he said, his voice steady and unyielding.Athena looked away, unable to respond, guilt etched across her face. She was one of the few in the company who knew about my ties to the Zobel Group of Companies—a secret James had revealed to her.James turned to the assembled employees, his voice firm yet composed. "Each one of you must understand that I never play favorites. You were all hired solely because of your capabilities and nothing else."He paused, letting his words sink in before continuing. "I will address this issue once and for all, not just for Yelle's sake but also for the company's reputation. I stand by my principles: this company will never be swayed by personal connecti
"How was day?" My brother greeted me with a warm smile as I returned home. Since he started staying with me, it became his habit to ask about my day. In the Philippines, we rarely find the time for such conversations; our busy work schedules leave little room for personal chats. Besides, our mom insists we avoid talking about business or work when we're together. She believes our precious free time should be spent bonding with family."It was hectic," I exclaimed.Amidst the chaos at work, I couldn't help but beam with excitement. "But I have good news for you!"I found myself unable to disclose the news of my appointment as the interior designer for Zobel Mall project here in the US to him. Instead, James and Luther dominated the conversation, their voices prevailing throughout most of our interaction."What is it?" he inquired, his tone laced with gentleness."I got the Zobel project! I'll be the interior designer for our mall here!" I exclaimed, brimming with excitement. But my b
Luther's POV"Yelle is seeing someone?" I was utterly stunned. Before she came to the U.S., we were all convinced she was here solely to pursue her career. We were certain she wouldn't find the time or even have the interest to date anyone. She had been so determined to make a name for herself."We didn't know about that," I added. "Yelle never mentioned him to us."James nodded, a frown crossing his face. "To be honest, I'm quite disappointed in your sister. I thought she came here to focus on her career and make a name for herself. Yet, in just a few months, she's already found someone to date."A sly grin crept across my lips. The jealousy in James's voice was unmistakable, far outweighing any hint of disappointment. I was almost certain he had a thing for my sister."On second thought," I began, aiming to lift his spirits, "since Yelle never mentioned that guy to us, I don't think she's serious about him."James breathed a sigh of relief. “I certainly hope so,” he murmured, a sha
