GABRIEL

***

It was too bad that Emily hadn’t interacted directly with the person who was sending those texts out to us. I had been discouraged, but I wouldn't let that stop me. Harry wouldn’t let that stop me. He had been such an encouragement this whole time and I wasn't going to let him down by giving up easily.

We would get to the bottom of things and everything would be okay just like he said it would. I didn’t believe it for myself, but I did for his sake. He was convinced that things would work out and I hoped they would. I couldn’t help but think about the timing of what had happened. It had happened just after I had talked to Emily, after our kiss.

It was just after I had told her that I didn't want to play games any more after she had agreed. Could that be what caused the whole thing to go up in flames? Could the person have misunderstood her reason for stopping as Emily betrayed her? Was that why they did it? Out of anger? Was it a warning to Emily in a way that she was next

Bakersville High School“Did you hear?” someone asked another.Emily, who was almost leaving the bathroom stall, stopped in her tracks. Was she finally going to catch the person who had told the whole school that she was dating Gabriel? It had been a week since the rumor started, a week since she and Gabriel had had the argument. She had tried every single way to find out who had spread that rumor but she had come up short. None of her sources were proving useful. She and Gabriel hadn’t talked in that time. He hadn’t even come to her house to sleep. A part of her was worried for him. Had she been staying at home with his parents arguing, just because he couldn’t admit that he was the one who had told someone about them dating? Had he been safe at that time?Had he found somewhere else to sleep? She was angry at him but she was also worried about his well-being. Theirs was a complicated relationship, where they cared for each other but they also couldn’t stand each other. Or maybe she

EMILY***“I wanted to let you have a read through the article before I posted it,” Tiffany said as she walked after me into her room.“Isn’t it one of the ones you already showed me?” I asked, suddenly feeling sick.I didn’t know if I could read through those stories again. They made me feel guilty, they made me feel bad and they made me feel confused. I was a victim, just like them, the biggest one in fact, yet it was so hard for me to be on their side. I was experiencing so many conflicting feelings. I was torn. “It is, but I wanted you to read it, see if it was okay, see if it would cause enough damage,” she said as she led me to her desk her laptop was open.I sat on her desk chair and read through it. I only read through a few lines before I turned to look at her.“Is all of this true?” I asked, my heart thumping in my chest.“Not really. The person gave me their story and gave me the liberty to change it up a little so that it had the desired effect,” she said, smiling.“So, y

GABRIEL***“I texted the person,” Emily said, “and I think I know how we can get them.”I felt my heart thump in my chest. I had so many questions. Had she reached out to them because of me? Had she risked being exposed as a result? I was worried for her. She didn’t have to do what she had done just for me.This was clearly a dangerous person who could not be treated lightly or jokingly. If anything happened to Emily because of me I wouldn’t be able to handle it. It made me wonder why I hadn’t thought of it first.“But first, I need you to confirm the details of what they said,” Emily said as she turned to face me, “is everything they said true?”Everyone in the room turned to face me. We were in my room with Harry and Harper. She wanted to come to the next meeting we had to see if she could help in some way. I was afraid that things would become awkward but so far they had not. I hoped they stayed that way until we got to the bottom of things.“I don’t even remember the person,” I s

EMILY***“Tiffany and I used to date,” Harry said, “and everything was going well for the first few months of our relationship. I won’t lie and say that it hadn't been great when it had, at the beginning. She was incredibly kind, smart, and funny. I had just become the student body president and everything was perfect. I felt like I was on top of the world and like I was unstoppable. With her by my side, I felt like there was nothing I couldn’t do, nothing I couldn’t achieve. But it didn’t last long. Things started happening to us.”“Things like what?” I asked.“Rumors started going around about me. There was a new story every day, about an incident, about how I had treated the workers at the school cafe, about interactions that I had had with fellow students. They all painted me in a bad light. According to the rumors I was rude and inconsiderate. I was selfish and uptight and I had no respect for people. I reasoned at first that they were just mindless rumors that were being spread

EMILY***“Now that we know she’s just doing this for attention, all that’s left for us is to find a way to expose her,” I said to Harry. It had taken a lot from him to tell me his story, and I had told him that we could discuss the rest of the details when he felt better but he had suggested we keep going.“Talking about it has made me realize just how deeply I was wronged. I want to get to the bottom of things as soon as possible. I want to make her pay,” he had said.“What if you just tell the truth?” he asked.“I have considered it, trust me. I have been feeling very guilty and I have wanted to just tell Gabriel that I know who she is, but there are two things to consider now. One is the fact that my reputation is at stake, and her exposing me will not have anything to do with her getting attention. It will be purely out of malice and it will ruin me. It is something very personal to me that I am not yet ready to share,” I said.“I understand. What’s the other thing?”"The other t

Bakersville High School***"I really need your help, Emily, please," Gabriel said.He was at the door of her room. She had refused to open it for him. It didn't matter that he was going through something, that his parents were fighting, on that day Emily was going through something as well, something that Gabriel had caused. She wasn't going to help him. She wasn't going to open the door. She wasn't even going to acknowledge his presence because that was all it took for him to use her and then throw her away when she was no longer helpful. She was done. It was the day he had shown the whole school his 'real' girlfriend. It didn't matter to Emily that she had been wrong, that she had actually been the one that had caused the rumor to start by telling Julie, what mattered to her was how Gabriel had chosen to act.How he had chosen to respond to that rumor had told Emily everything she needed to know about where she stood when it came to him- she was just someone he was holding on a le

EMILY***"I decided not to post it," she said and I had to hold myself back from screaming in joy.I was in her room. It had been three days since I had last spoken to her, three days since Harry and I had come up with a plan to stop her from doing any more damage. Harry had advised me to give her some time before I asked her about the post so that I didn't look suspicious. I had.On the third day, I couldn't wait any longer. I was anxious. I needed to know what she was doing. Harry had given me a go-ahead and so I rushed to her room, hoping and praying that she had not changed her mind and gone back to her original plan. She hadn’t. In fact, she had done exactly what I hoped she would do. Our plan was already working."Why not?" I asked, acting to the best of my ability."I think that those people should share their stories themselves, in their own ways and at their own times. It felt like they were riding on my courage.""I get that," I said, playing along, "it took you a lot of co

GABRIEL***“Emily and I have an idea,” Harry said as he stood and walked towards her.It was yet another day in which we were in my room trying to find out how to get the person who had made the post to confess what they had done. The two looked at each other and Harry nodded at Emily, as if encouraging her to go on.I tried not to read too much into it. They were both helping me, they were no longer together and even if they were I doubted that simply apologizing and crying in each other’s arms had made that much of a difference.“The idea is to get the person to expose themselves,” Emily said, “I know I suggested this last time but Harry helped me flesh out the idea more and this is what I have. I have been interacting with the person more and I need you to know that I have made it so that they think I’m on their side,” she said to me and I nodded, “and I’ve done so so that I’m better able to convince them to make another post saying who they are, telling their names.”“Our reasoni

EMILY***"You guys knew about it, didn’t you?" I asked Nila and Julie who were suddenly awfully quiet when Gabriel walked in."Who, me? I have no idea what you're talking about?" Nila asked while holding her hands to her chest in mock surprise. We all laughed."I won't lie and say I didn't know. In fact, I had a meeting with him to make sure he had changed for good," Julie said. She was always so intense. I loved it."Thanks for looking out for me," I said to her."You know I got you. Always," she said.

GABRIEL***"We're home," Mom said as she opened the door to our house. She dumped her bag onto the living room floor and went around every room as if she was announcing her presence. I shook my head. I knew she had forgotten all about it and so I picked it up and carried it to her room before I went to mine.It felt good to be back. It had been a great year, a year I would never forget but being home felt great. It felt like a sigh of relief. I had made it back. I had done it. My mother and I had chosen to relocate temporarily because it felt like a good idea to just start over in a place that was unplugged and away from real life and all the responsibilities that real life demanded from us.It had been healing to be in a place where no one kn

EMILY***“We’re gonna be late,” Nila said to me.“Just a minute,” I said as I put the finishing touches on my outfit.I was a perfectionist in everything my dressing included. Besides, today was a special day for someone special to me and I needed to look the part.“Okay, I'm ready,” I said as I turned to face Nila, “how do I look?” I asked.“You look.. Stunning,” she said, “you look really great.”“Thank you, you do too,” I said to her and she curtsied and smiled.

THE END(Bakersville High school)“Emily doesn’t want to see you right now,” Terry said to Gabriel and he could tell by the tone of her voice that she didn’t want to see him too.He still didn’t know what he had done. Was this still about the stupid argument they had had that past weekend? He wanted to believe that that was what it was but something felt incredibly off.Something very bad had happened but he had no idea what it was and he had no way of finding out either because Emily wouldn’t see him. She wouldn’t pick up his calls or answer his texts either.

EMILY***“See you on the weekend,” Mom said as she dropped me off in the parking lot.“See you,” I said as I got out of the car. I watched her drive off before I walked to my dorm room.I had a new roommate because it was part of the school rules to change roommates at the beginning of every academic year. Nila and I had hoped and prayed that fate would let us meet again as roommates but that hadn’t been the case.It almost didn’t matter, though, because we remained good friends who were always together around the school. It had been months since the school year started. In fact, it was closer to the end now than it was in the beginning. The semester in which Gabriel felt like it was ages ago- it was almost

I shouldn’t have dated you when I knew I had so much baggage. I only hope that you’ll find someone who will be easy to love, someone who won’t cause you as much heartbreak and pain as I have,” I said.“I’m sorry too, to you as well as to Emily. EMILY***“Dinner’s ready,” my Mom said, snapping me out of my thoughts. It seemed she had been standing there for a while, watching me, and I hadn’t even noticed.“I’ll be right down,” I said, and she smiled at me before she left.I had been home for the past three days. My parents had gotten wind of the news and they had come to pick me up in the evening after I talked to Harry. Final exams were ongoing, and I had been against the idea of being at home but my parents had insisted.I had appreciated the rest and being away from what had happened for the first few days, but now I wanted to go back to school.
