The howling continued, as bushes rustled at the edge of the clearing. Dimitri knew the coyotes were prowling, searching for a weak spot, an opportune moment to strike and attack. He grinned, hoping they would do just that. He knew something like this might happen, knew Bane would be foolish, refusing to wait too long to press his advantage in an attempt to take over Bull Creek and drive the humans and their sympathizers out. The woods were filled with panthers, cougars, and bears, patrolling the area for just such an attack. They waited, watching for Dimitri's signal.

He glanced over at Adira. If he expected her to be scared, he was gladly disappointed. She stood beside him, her back straight, and he could sense the power at her fingertips, ready to be unleashed. She wasn't afraid; she was ready. He even moved to step in front of her, a shield against whatever might happen next, but she moved to stand beside him instead. She wouldn't hide. There was too much fight in her.

He felt his animal growl, approval, protection, and hunger for the witch filling him. Down boy, now's not the time.

Turning back to the perimeter, he waited to see what Bane had planned. He didn't have to wait long.

Several coyotes, their silver-gray fur glistening in the moonlight, saliva dripping from their snarling jaws, as they snapped their threats at the residents of Bull Creek, entered the clearing, circling those within. The coyotes didn't attack, but Dimitri knew it wouldn't take much to provoke them. Everyone stood, braced for whatever was about to happen. Several men reached under the tables loaded down with food, pulling out shotguns, holding the weapons in front of them, the barrels aimed at the coyotes as if daring them to charge. The residents of Bull Creek wouldn't permit themselves to be provoked into making the first attack, but they were more than ready to defend themselves.

Bane Kastner stepped out of the woods and into the clearing, two mangy looking men a step behind him, their backs straight, arms barely moving as they walked. Dimitri could smell the stink of the coyotes the closer they came, the night wind ruffling their gray hair, their dark eyes staring right at him. The men walked with purpose, determination. Whatever their reason for being here, they seemed unconcerned about anyone stopping them or barring their way, not even those with shotguns. Dimitri's panther fought to get out, to shift and attack, and it took all Dimitri's strength to keep his animal at bay. Might as well see how this plays out first before he unleashed his panther. Human cunning was more important, right then, than animal instinct.

Bane continued his approach, his hands clasped behind his back as he walked, giving the appearance of nonchalance, even though Dimitri knew there was nothing casual about what the man intended. The snarling coyotes were proof of that.

"Well, he looks charming," Adira said, never taking her eyes off Bane.

"He's an ass," Dimitri said. "And one I wish I didn't have to encounter."

Bane stretched his arms out once he reached a few feet from where Dimitri stood. "A nice night for a farewell party," the man said, a fake grin on his face. "It's always nice to send people off with a celebration." He cocked an eyebrow at the men wielding guns. "Such a human approach to things."

Dimitri tilted his head to the side, placing his hands on his hips, as he stared at Bane. "Are you going somewhere that we should be celebrating? If I had known, I would have been more than happy to throw a few extra hot dogs near the fire for you. Perhaps even in it."

Bane chuckled as he gave a shake of his head. "Ah, Dimitri, always assuming you possess wit." He returned his arms to behind his back, his hands clasped together. "No, no. I'm not leaving. You are. You're not wanted here." He stretched an arm out, waving at all those gathered. "None of you are wanted here. This is coyote land. There's no place for…humans."

"I think you're the one telling jokes now," Dimitri said. "There's room for everyone here, but you. This land doesn't belong to you. It never did. You just wish to slither your way in and take over. For what purpose, I have no idea."

Josh stepped up next to Dimitri. "Why exactly do you want this land anyway? There's plenty of woodland south of here, good enough for you and your friends."

Bane gestured toward Highway 192. "A major interstate to the north." He gestured to the west. "A couple of productive towns to the west." He then gestured to the east. "And the beaches and even more towns to the east, with plenty of woods for prowling and hunting in between. Bull Creek is perfect for what I want. It's just infested with vermin, that's all."

Dimitri arched an eyebrow at that last statement. "Vermin?" He took a deep breath. "I think it's time for you to go. Now."

The howl of coyotes filled the night air, angry snarls following in its wake as if Bane's men tried to press their leader's point. Dimitri didn't care. He would not be bullied, and he was not going to allow these families to be kicked out of their homes. With a deep breath, he crossed his arms and just stared at the man before him, refusing to budge. "Do you need to be escorted out of here, Bane?"

Bane grinned, his yellowish teeth adding a sinister air to his face. "What? This isn't a party for everyone?" He nodded, chuckling under his breath. "You have until tonight to clear out, Dimitri. I suggest you make good use of your time. We will give no mercy to those who ignore this warning, humans or shifters."

"I just got here," Adira said, dropping her arms to her sides, palms out. "I like my cabin. It's homey, cute little roosters on the curtains, a shag rug in the living room, even a fireplace, although I have no idea when I would ever use it." She shrugged. "I don't plan on leaving. I mean, I just unpacked and everything."

Dimitri worried his feisty witch bit off more than her power could handle with Bane. The man had a horrendous mean streak when it came to hurting people.

Bane took a couple of steps closer, his grin shifting to a leer. "Well, you're cute," he said. "Spunky, even. Perhaps I'll permit you to stay."

"No one permits me to do anything," she said, as shards of magic sparked from her fingertips. "I don't need your permission, trust me."

Dimitri's panther growled, and he felt the shift begin as fur oozed from his skin. He clamped down hard before he lost control. "Leave," Dimitri growled, his voice deep, gravelly, as he took a step toward the thicker man.

Bane laughed, deep and menacing. "Down, kitty cat. I'm just conversing with the pretty lady. I didn't realize she was your girl. I'd be sure to take her with you when you leave if I were you." He winked at Adira, and Dimitri took another step, ready to lash out. Bane ignored him, however, and instead glared at Adira. "I'd be careful, witch. You're known by the company you keep, and right now, you're slumming." And then he just laughed harder, as he turned and walked away, his two men turning and following him, as the coyotes slithered back into the woods. None of them even bothered to check behind them, obviously not worried that Dimitri and his friends would attack. It grated on Dimitri's nerves.

"Like I said, charming," Adira said, her magic snapping from her fingers, dissipating a second later.

Dimitri glanced at her, shaking his head, as he gave a soft laugh. "Yeah, charming." He took a deep breath, giving his head another shake, this time to shed the irritation he felt due to Bane's visit. He then turned, offering his arm for Adira to take. "Come, I could use another beer."

He felt her turn and join him, her arm sipping into the crook of his, as he walked back over to the coolers under the tables. "What does he want with Bull Creek?" she asked, as they walked. Josh and Alanna joined them, as Eve walked back to the bonfire, her back still straight, her posture tense. Dimitri wished he knew what the small blond woman's story was.

Dimitri opened the cooler, pulling out beers and passing them around. He twisted Adira's open first before handing it to her.

Josh glanced at him and shrugged. "I think I'd prefer something stronger, right about now," he said before twisting the cap and taking a long pull.

Dimitri gave a short nod. "You and me, both." He then turned to Adira. "It's not that he wants it, really. It's more that he just doesn't want humans to have it. From what Sheriff Einstein told me a few days ago, they wander from area to area, looking for places such as ours where they can move in, chase the residents out, believing humans should keep to the cities while the woods and forests belong to shifters. They bully and threaten, sometimes using violence to get their way." He glanced at her with a serious expression. "They've even been known to kill."

"Yeah, it probably wasn't a good idea for you to provoke him," Josh said to Adira. He then glanced up at Dimitri. "His threat seemed pretty real to me."

Dimitri nodded, catching the meaning behind his friend's words. He turned to Adira, his brows knitted with concern. "You should stay with me until this is settled with Bane."

He thought she appeared ready to pounce on the idea, but then her face grew pinched in anger. "I have my own cabin, thanks," she said, her tone clipped. "I'll be fine. I don't need a babysitter."

He couldn't believe how stubborn she was being. Had she not just witnessed the man who threatened her? Noticed his size? The men who accompanied him? Saw the coyotes? Did she not hear the coyotes waiting in the woods for a fight? Her wards wouldn't protect her from all that threatened her. "Adira, now is not the time to be pigheaded about this," he said. "Bane means what he says. He'll use you to get to me and Bull Creek. You don't want to be in the middle of that. Of this."

"Pigheaded?" She spun on him, her voice dripping with venom. "Did you just call me pigheaded?"

Josh raised his eyebrows and quickly averted his gaze from what he believed was about to happen. Dimitri didn't blame his friend. It wasn't the best choice of words. "That's not what I meant. I just…"

"You just thought I was some weak female who needs a man's big, strong arms to protect me," she snarled. "Well, Catnip, I don't." She put the beer bottle to her lips and tilted it back, draining the bottle. When she finished, she shoved the empty bottle at him, pinning it to his chest until he took it. "Nor do I need your help getting home." She turned and stormed off, her anger causing shards of bright light to sputter from her fingertips as she left.

He watched, as she thundered her way back up the dirt road to her cabin, unsure what just happened. She probably didn't even know she leaked magic in her anger. He didn't understand. One moment, she seemed happy, standing at his side, ready to face Bane and his coyotes, and the next, she became pissed and stormed off. He felt his animal stir, aroused at both sides of the woman he watched walk away. He didn't doubt that she could protect herself, but he wouldn't risk finding out he was wrong.

Josh laughed beside him, his beer dangling from his fingertips. "Now that's a spunky one," he said. "You have your hands full with that one, Catnip."

Dimitri nodded, knowing it was more than that. Adira Brennan was his mate. Of that, he was positive. He only hoped he hadn't screwed up what was fated.

She fumed all the way back to her cabin, the dust from the road kicking up with her passage. How dare he? I am not some weakling, some poor female needing a man to protect me. I'm a witch damn it! The words continued stewing a morass of anger in her mind until she reached her cabin. With a flick of her wrist, the door burst open, slamming back against the wall. She continued her rampaging pace into her home, using her hand, as well as her anger, to slam the door shut behind her, sealing out her frustration with Dimitri.Entering the small kitchen area of the cabin, she pulled out a wine glass from the cabinet and then reached for the wine on the counter to pour herself a full glass. She downed half of the dark red liquid with one swallow, and then refilled the goblet as she took a deep breath. She couldn't believe how fast Dimitri went from sweet and understanding to an overprotective moron. It must be a record or something. She had already proved to him that she could take care of her

"Why the hell are you sleeping on my porch?" Adira stood there, her hands planted on her hips, legs slightly apart, which allowed her robe to fall open slightly, exposing her creamy thighs. "I told you I did NOT need protecting, damn it."The panther jerked awake at her words, or rather at the seething tone in her voice. He jumped to all fours, his ears perked back as he stood, braced for whatever was wrong. He jerked his gaze to the left and the right, searching for the attack until he realized that it came from right in front of him. His gold eyes told her he knew just how pissed she was. Then he shifted, his fur slipping back into his skin, his bones popping as his four legs turned to two legs and a pair of arms, his paws shifting to feet and hands, and his body completely naked. As soon as the shift was over, he stood, his thick muscles stretching back into shape from being cramped in his animal form for so long and asleep.Adira couldn't take her eyes off his body, his powerful le

"Shots! We need shots," Alanna called out once they found a table. Adira slid into the empty chair, as did Deputy Lainie Everest and Eve Hartlow. It was ladies night at Everglades, a shifter bar in Holopaw, and Alanna was determined that Adira would have a good time, to unwind and forget men and shifters, especially coyotes. It was a dive bar, really, nothing like Shades back in Draven Falls, but it held its own, rustic charm. It was a wooden structure, appearing to be constructed of discarded planks, rather than finished wood, with scratched up wooden chairs and tables, weak mirrors and flashing beer logos on the walls. Serving girls wandered from table to table, taking orders and flirting with the men patrons, whether the men had dates or not. Country music blared from a broken down jukebox, bouncing off the walls, as couples line danced and chugged their beers. It was the perfect place to get drunk and forget. While they were there to put coyotes out of their minds, there was one s

"You did what?" Dimitri couldn't believe what he heard. "Adira, Everglades is not a normal bar." He turned to Alanna and Eve. "You two know about that place. Why the hell did you take her there?"Eve looked at him like he was crazy. "Because it was ladies night. You know? Two for one? Duh."It took everything he had not to throttle the woman. "Damn it, Eve, this isn't a game." He could feel the panther pushing at him, wanting free to wreak havoc on whomever he could. Fur pushed through his skin a little, claws pushing out of his fingertips, the pain of the shift just beginning. He tamped it down quickly. He didn't need to lose control now, not with so much at risk. He spun to Alanna. "Everglades is a paranormal bar. You should have known they would be there. Hell, Sheriff Einstein even told me they were there the other day, shooting off their mouth." The three women returned to Alanna's cabin when they left Everglades, and Lainie went to the sheriff's department to file a report on the

"Here are the stones you asked for," Josh said, as Ezra and he entered Adira's cabin, both carrying an armload of small ordinary stones. "Planning on hurling them at Bane to drive him away?"A new day dawned and, so far, Bane's threat was unfulfilled. That didn't mean it wasn't imminent, however. Ezra chuckled as he walked over to her kitchen table, piling the stones on top. "Might not be real effective, but I'm sure it would be fun." A cloth covered the table, with various oils and gemstones lined along the edges and circled by a trio of tall white candles flickering shadows onto the cabin walls. A mortar sat in the center of the cloth, the pestle ready for action. At the far edge of the table, sage burned in an incense holder. Soft Native American music played in the background, not because she needed it for the spell, but because it helped soothe her nerves, calming her for what she needed to do. The evening sun dipped in the west, barely visible through the trees surrounding the small community of Bull Creek. A cool breeze whispered through the branches, rustling the leaves, as Adira eased her way along the trail following the panther, as he led her to where he knew the wards needed to be placed. It was hard not to be mesmerized by the feline's lithe body as he meandered through the woods, keeping his gaze bouncing around their surroundings. A smile spread across her face, knowing he protected her, keeping an eye out for Bane and his coyotes. After her run-in with Bane's thugs last night, Dimitri would not take any chances. She couldn't say that his over-protectiveness upset her. Not this time, anyway. In fact, if she were to say anything at all, it would be that his protective nature made her sex throb. If they didn't have to get the wards up so quickly, she would have loved for him to take her right there in the woods, driving his cock into her, spreading her open before him

Dimitri craved her. As soon as they were back to the cabin, he shifted again, taking her in his arms as soon as he possessed arms again. The entire time he stood by her as they took on Bane and his henchmen, it drove him crazy. Her strength, the passion in her voice as she stood up for herself, the way she defended the others in Bull Creek, it came as no surprise to him that his cock was rock hard when he shifted back. He didn't wait for her to strip. He didn't even wait for her to be in the cabin. He ripped her clothes from her body, tossing the shreds to the ground as he devoured her mouth with his, using his hands to explore her body. He cupped her breasts in his hands, his fingers grazing across her swollen nipples, teasing them. A hum of satisfaction slipped from her lips, her gasps at his touch spurring him to a hotter fire. "I mean, now that the excitement is over, we can spend time catching up."Fitz slammed the trunk closed and turned to lean back on it, sliding his hands into his pockets. "Trust me, I'd love doing just that, but I need to figure out what Dad was doing back at home with the Order of Wardens. Dad had to be into some shady dealings, and I need to know what the company is facing."Dimitri nodded. "I get it. Just don't try to do it all on your own.""Like he'd have a choice," Mandy said as she and Kinsey left the cabin to join them, Adira and Lainie beside them. Mandy's arm was in a sling to help protect her wound. Thanks to her shifter blood, she would heal quicker than a human, but she still had to be careful and not overdo it. Their mother stayed at Dimitri's cabin, deciding to visit her younger children since she was there and saw no need to rush home. Lainie had reached out to her

Jeremiah screamed. "Use your damn magic and blast them.""Yes, please," Adira snarled from the open doorway. "Try it." She raised her hands, her own blue magic's fire dancing around her fingertips. Dimitri's panther padded into the warehouse, moving over to where Mandy stood over Jeremiah. I've got him, he assured his sister-in-law. Fitz stared at the shattered glass scattered on the ground, several shards covered in blood, Kinsey's blood. He never should have left his mates alone. Now, one was in the hands of his enemies, and the other on her way to join the first. How could his father always be one step ahead of him?Fitz remained there, squatting, staring at the ruins of Kinsey's window. He couldn't blame Mandy for racing off after Kinsey. His panther urged him to do the same, and it took everything he had not to give in to those urges. He couldn't respond with rash behavior, however, as much as he wanted nothing more than to race off and devour those who hurt his family. He needed to think this through, needed to figure out the best way to save his mates. He needed… Fitz sighed. He needed to get off his ass and take his father out."The magic twists Kinsey's trail," Adira said to those gathered around. "But it doesn't twist Eve or Mandy's. No. Mandy had every intention of starting the search for her mate. She quickly stripped off her clothes, piling them on the wooden porch in the front of the cabin. Fitz would see the clothes and know what she did. He'd be quick to follow her. Daniel underestimated his son; at least, this version of Fitz. He wouldn't sacrifice Kinsey for his father's goals, not with everything the three of them planned, not now that they discovered the way to be together, that they needed to be together.Mandy braced, shifting, her bones popping, body stretching as the tawny fur of her panther slid from under her flesh. She tried to inhale some scent to give her an idea, but all she could smell was the sweat of humans, the fringes of Enoch's magic, and what seemed to be iron. Memories of what happened to her flooded her mind as she tried to move. Opening her gold eyes, she noticed the iron bars around her. A cage! They stuffed me into a damn cage. She forced herself up onto her paws, pain screaming from her right leg when she put her weight on it. Her body was sluggish, her mind still a little groggy. The floor of her cage was solid wood, while the walls and ceiling were inch-thick iron bars. She seemed to be in some sort of warehouse. By the scents that reached her, the place hadn't been used in a long time, dust and decay filling her nostrils. Windows set hig

I can't imagine how much energy three of you would have."Fitz sat across from Dimitri at Gracie's Diner, sipping his third cup of coffee. "It's kind of hard to stay naked when you're afraid the Order will bust down your door and kill your mate." The smell of greasy burgers filled the air as plates and glasses clinked against each other. The diner was filled almost to capacity as nearby residents of Bull Creek and Holopaw filled their bellies with lunch. The bell dinged by the pickup window as plates of steaming food passed through the window, waiting for the servers to swoop by and deliver it to hungry customers. Another bell dinged over the glass door as people walked in and out, either starving or satisfied. "Trust me," Fitz sa

Kinsey watched as Mandy left through the front door. She didn't really blame Mandy for needing some time away. The three of them had been glued to each other since they entered the cabin on Sunday. While it would have been nice spending this hump day doing exactly that, Kinsey knew they all needed a break to sort through the sudden waterfall of emotions their animals forced upon them. Life just took a dramatic turn for them all.Kinsey poured herself a fresh cup of coffee and headed to her bedroom. They had been so busy exploring each other's bodies, they never took a moment to unpack Mandy and Fitz's clothes completely. Not that it mattered much. With as much sex as the three of them had over the past couple of days, they hadn't really needed clothes. Of course, even with as much as they may have wanted to remain that way, eventually they would need to mingle again with the rest of the world, and for the most part, that would require clothing. For the next two days, the three of them never left the cabin, even choosing to order in their food, instead of venturing out to stock the shelves. They spent their time exploring each other's bodies in the bedroom and sitting around the cabin exploring the possibilities of the future. Their panthers were calmer; at least, in the manner of the mating call, they were. In terms of the lust that filled the room, they were as insatiable as their human counterparts. The three of them had a difficult time keeping their hands and mouths off each other, and Mandy found herself buried between Kinsey's legs several more times since Sunday. They agreed there would be no sleeping in separate beds. They would live together, love together, sleep together, and every other together that existed. They weren't separate relationships trying to coexist; they were one relationship with three parts. Unorthodox, perhaps, but for them it would be how they lived. Mandy bore Fitz's mate mark, as did Kinsey, and

Fitz remained quiet after his statement about a new alpha, leaving the packing of their motel room to Mandy. Guilt filled him because he hadn't even considered how Kinsey would feel about returning to Draven Falls once he told her about his father's plans. Of course, he hadn't really thought beyond protecting her, so it wasn't like he made future plans. Hell, he wasn't even sure what the future held. He moved moment-by-moment right now, reacting more than planning his next step. That had to change.Mandy finished packing, and the three of them loaded the trunk of the car before heading back to Bull Creek. Mandy attempted to get him to talk more, but after a few short replies, gave up and talked with Kinsey, instead. By the time Fitz pulled into Kinsey's driveway, he couldn't even remember the drive there, his mind churning over how he would take over the family from his father, and whether that was even possible. Taking over the family was never something Fitz thought about, believing
