KIARA’S POV
Exhaling deeply, I threw the brown paper bag on my bed. I was about to hop into the bathroom when my phone rang.
My heart skipped a beat when I saw the caller Id. The phone almost slipped out of my hand as I tried to pick it up in a haste.
My voice shook slightly as I rasped, “Hello.”
“Honey… what took you so long to pick up my call?”
I licked my dry lips and stuttered, “I…I… was walking… I didn’t realize that…”
“Next time, I expect you to answer at the first ring, is that clear?”
I nodded but then I realized she couldn’t see me. So, I rasped, “Yes.”
The delay in response seemed to have infuriated her further. Her clipped voice rang in my ears. “Go to the Espanol Café right now.”
“Right now? Can I take a shower first?” I asked before I could stop myself.
“If you don’t reach there in five minutes, you will have to face the consequences.”
I picked up the bag and locked the door while she gave me instructions. She wanted me to get noticed by Alpha Kevin.
Exhaling deeply, I trotted to the café. Thankfully, it was just a few blocks away and I managed to reach there on time.
My phone beeped with a message, ‘Good Job. Now go and charm him with your looks.”
I rolled my eyes. How the hell did she expect me to do that? She didn’t even give me a chance to shower.
I caught a glimpse of myself in the glass door as I walked inside the café. Though my hair was slightly messy and the makeup had worn out, I did look quite enchanting.
People stopped their work and gazed at me as I walked to the air-conditioned section. I could sense admiration in their gaze.
I halted my steps as I spotted Kevin through the glass door. My heart fluttered and my stomach churned with a funny sensation.
He was even more handsome in person; sharp jawline, eyebrows arched by the right proportion. His hazel, brown eyes sparkled with a kind of honesty that could hold anyone captive.
“Miss, you are blocking the way.” The waiter’s voice sounded behind my back drawing my attention away from Kevin.
Damn! Why did Ariana have to target Kevin? Drawing in a deep breath, I blinked away the tears that had welled my eyes.
“Will you move?” The waiter’s irritated voice sounded again. He must have already asked me to move several times. Flustered, I stepped quickly to the side but as he was about to enter the other room, I stuck out my leg.
He stumbled, swayed from one side to the other. He couldn’t grab anything for support as both of his hands were occupied.
“Miss, please help him.” Someone shouted. I raised my eyebrows and pushed him lightly.
He fell flat on the ground with a loud crash. The plates in his hands shattered and the sauce splattered across the floor.
I laughed loudly and walked past him, crushing a saucer that had managed to remain intact.
“Why the hell did you do that?” Risha said, jumping to her feet. Hatred and fury were written all over her face. Her fists were clenched and her jaws were taut.
I expected her to attack me as she usually did at school but she didn’t. Probably because she was with her brother.
Risha was still glaring at me, waiting for a reply. I just raised my shoulder and said, “He was rude to me back there. So, I just taught him a teeny-weeny lesson.”
Then I turned away from her and proceeded towards an empty table. Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw Kevin and Risha help the waiter stand up.
I was so distracted looking at them that I miscalculated a step. My feet twisted and I stumbled. A scream escaped my mouth and my eyes closed reflexively.
I had expected to fall but a strong pair of arms grabbed and steadied me. My breath hitched as I raised my eyes to look at my savior.
“Are you alright?” his deep, husky voice made my heart flutter. His mesmerizing eyes held me captive and everything blurred in the background. The erratic thudding of my heart against my ribs drowned all the other noises. My lips parted and I leaned forward hypnotized by him.
“What were you trying to do b****!?” Risha shouted, dragging me away from Kevin.
My heart sank when I realized what I was about to do. I turned on my heels and walked away as fast as my legs would carry me.
F***! If Risha hadn’t stopped me on time, Kevin would have died. This couldn’t happen again. I should have better control over myself.
My heart twisted with guilt when I heard the manager’s booming voice. He was probably scolding the waiter for today’s mishap. I was tempted to go and apologize but I forced myself to walk away.
It was important that I hated myself as much as everyone did. It would remind me that I didn’t deserve anyone in my life. Only then could I save everyone else from me.

The next day…
I was seated at the table and was doing my homework when the bell rang. I really don’t know why I bothered about homework. Maybe because it helped me divert my mind from all the chaos in my life.
A knot formed in my stomach when I saw Ariana at the door. What did she want from me now?
She shut the door quickly and sauntered to my bedroom. I trudged behind her quietly, trying to prepare myself for whatever she was about to dole out to me.
She handed one of the shopping bags to me and stated, “Shower and get dressed.”
I raised my head and looked at her questioningly. When she didn’t say anything, I walked into the bathroom quietly. Asking her questions was like stirring up a hornet’s hive.
A gasp escaped my mouth when I pulled out the dress. I ran my hand over the soft fabric of the black dress. The work on it was exquisite.
Tiny diamonds dazzled in the center of each flower that was embroidered into the lacy fabric. It looked too pretty to wear.
“Thirty… twenty-nine… twenty-eight…” Ariana’s voice sounded in the hall as she started the countdown.
F***! I had forgotten that she had given me five minutes to get ready. I pulled over the dress hastily and stepped out of the bathroom.
Her lips stretched in an appreciative smile on seeing me. if it wasn’t for the evil glint in her eyes, I would have thought she was really happy to see me well dressed.
She fussed over me for quite some time; doing my makeup, hairdo and making me wear jewelry.
My heartbeat accelerated with every passing minute. One thing was sure, she wanted to take me somewhere outside.
“This scent will create an illusion in Kevin’s mind that you are his mate.” She said, spraying something from a glass bottle all over my dress.
My heart skipped a beat when I heard this. She wanted Kevin to believe that I was his mate but why?
“What if he sees through the illusion?”
“Then, your parents will pay the price.” She said thrusting the bottle of liquid into my hands.
Exhaling deeply, I put it in my purse and wore my heels. I would have to think of a way to make the scent lose its effect.
She drove me to the location herself. So, I never got an opportunity. I would have to spill a drink on something at the party later in the party. Then, I could shower and change my clothes without her suspecting anything.
KEVIN’S POV‘Why did Dad have to keep the party on the common land?” Risha complained as she walked towards the car.She swayed slightly as she tried to balance herself on the six-inch heels. She held the edges of the long, peach gown in both her hands as she walked at the pace of a tortoise.I stifled the urge to burst out laughing and said, “Hurry up, Risha. Do you want me to be late for my own party?”She squinted her eyes at me as if she would devour me whole. This only made me want to laugh harder. I bit the inside of my cheek and turned away.“Ahhh!!!” A scream drew my attention back to her. My eyes widened in horror when I saw her fall. I rushed towards her but Cami had already caught her by the tim
KEVIN’S POVI was waiting for my drink when I sensed someone’s stare. The urge to turn around and look was so strong, almost as if I was drawn by an invisible force.I sucked in my breath when my eyes landed on the gorgeous girl in front of me. She was the one who had dominated my thoughts all this while. In the long, black gown she looked like the moon goddess had descended on earth wrapped in the star-studded sky.I walked towards her as if my body had a mind of its own. I inhaled deeply as the distinct fragrance of pine and cherries assaulted me. The scent calmed and comforted an ache in my heart which I didn’t know was present.Four words popped in my mind the moment our eyes met, ‘Mate, love, protect, honor.’
KIARA’S POVI trudged along the weather-worn path until my feet gave way. A scream escaped my mouth as I knelt to the ground. The sharp stones pierced through the flimsy material of my dress and skinned my knees but I didn’t care. They would heal while the pain in my heart would only magnify with every passing moment. The chirping of the crickets, the hooting of the owls, the clicking of the bats resounded in the stillness of the night. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of a pair of golden eyes.A mournful howl echoed in the darkness as the large grey wolf bounded into the forest. I could tell that it was a werewolf.Tears flowed down my cheeks as I recalled the first ti
CHAPTER SEVENKEVIN’S POV I remained seated on the ground long after the guests had left. I was at a loss…Warmth flowed through me as I sensed my mother’s hand on my shoulder. I raised my head to meet her kind, concerned eyes. She sat beside me and held my hand, wordlessly comforting me. This gave me time to gather my thoughts.I don’t know how long we sat like that. When I felt like I was ready to talk, I muttered, “What should I do mom? I feel like an utter failure…”She smiled at me and said, “Go and talk to your mate.”“I can’t just go and talk to her after what she said…”Mom let out a long, deep sigh. “Don’t let your ego ruin this relationship before it even begins…”“What ego? I don’t…” I stopped mid-sentence when I realized that probably mom was rig
CHAPTER EIGHTKIARA’S POV The next morning, I woke up to the sounds of chatter outside my room. One of the voices belonged to Risha and the other must have been Cami.“Damn! My brother has turned into a lovesick puppy! Do you know what he did yesterday night?” Risha’s agitated voice sounded.“Take a deep breath and tell me exactly what happened?” Cami’s sweet and soothing voice sounded.“He…that fool… called up ‘Zinnia Apparels and got twelve dresses delivered overnight. No rewards for guessing for whom it is!”“That is because Kiara doesn’t have any clothes to wear…”“You don’t understand, Cami. My brother hates shopping. He didn’t buy a dress for me even after I bugged him for ages. He hasn’t even marked her but look at him… He has changed so much… I am afraid I will lose my
KEVIN’S POV I drew in a deep breath before knocking at the glass door of my father’s cabin. My heartbeat accelerated as time ticked by. When he didn’t reply for long, I knocked again; a bit louder. “Dad, did you call for me?”“Hmm… come in…” He muttered. If it wasn’t for my extraordinary hearing, I wouldn’t have caught it.I hesitated slightly before entering. Our relationship had become slightly strained after Kiara tipped our competitors. The door swung open with a creak to reveal my father and Risha sitting opposite each other.“When did you come, Rishu?” I asked, sitting on the chair beside her.She crossed her arms and glared at me before turning to Dad. “Alpha, you have to decide right now! I can’t go to the same college as Kiara.”I placed my hand on hers and asked, “Don’t overreact, Kiara.
KIARA’S POV I woke up to the sweet twittering of birds. The cool breeze blew in through the open window carrying the faint smell of wildflowers. The sunlight that streamed in through the thick foliage was enough to light up the room but didn’t hurt. The packhouse was very homey and comfortable. It wasn’t loaded with electronics like the mansion in the city. It was airier and simply furnished. I fell in love with it the moment we reached the house. If I had a choice, I would spend the rest of my life here. The clattering of the dishes and the faint screeching of wheels drew my attention to the door. I couldn't restrain the smile that formed on my face on seeing Kevin in an apron and hat.My stomach rumbled as the aroma of pancakes tickled my nose. How did he know that it was my favorite? He looked so adorable holding out the fork with a piece of pancake that I forgot to push it away. I let him feed the pancake as
KEVIN’S POV I placed the log of wood on the large boulder and split it with one swift swing. I tried to focus on the task but my mind kept drifting to Kiara.God knows how she was doing in that musty dungeon. Dad wanted to keep her in the cell till she agreed to shift. When I protested, he commanded me to chop the wood.Shaking my head, I placed another branch on the boulder and hacked it with the heavy axe. Sweat trickled down my forehead as I continued to chop the wood in the scorching sun.In a while, the urge to keep chopping subsided. Alpha must have released me from his command. Now, I was not in a mood to give up. I continued to chop the firewood one after the other.“Kevin, Alpha has released you from his command.” Collin’s voice sounded behind me. Ignoring him, I kept on wielding my axe.“Kevin, you must not exert yourself like this. Have some water.” He tried again, thrusting a
Five years later…KIARA’S POVDrops of tears fell on the piece of paper as I ran my hand over it. It was left by Nivaan for me on the eve of my twenty-third birthday.Dear Cuckoo, I feel like my life is meaningless without Valence. Don’t get me wrong I love you all but there is a hollow in my heart that is eating me up. I am going in search of peace. I might finally be at peace when I find my mate. If that happens, I will return home. Till then, I hope my gift will give you so much happiness that you won’t miss me…Always yours, Nivaan LovelockMy lips stretched into a weak smile as Kevin hugged me from behind. He lowered his head near my ears and said, “Missing your brother.I let out a deep sigh and turned around to face him. I cupped his face and looked into his eyes. They remi
KIARA’S POV We kept waiting for the troops to arrive but they never did. Morning turned to noon and noon turned to sunset. In the end, we decided to rest and plan afresh the next day.Leaving a few guards to guard the gate, we retired to the mansion. I plopped on the bed and stretched my aching arms and legs. My head was spinning with possibilities. Was Ariana planning a surprise attack? Had she decided to use some other strategy to defeat us?I was too engrossed in my thoughts and didn’t realize when Layla thrust a bowl of soup into my hands. In my distracted stupor, I lifted the spoon to my mouth and was about to take the first sip when a force caused the spoon to fly out of my hand. The next moment the bowl fell on the floor and shattered.“What the hell!” I exclaimed and jumped to my feet. My mouth remained open and my eyes widened when I saw Layla in Nivaan’s grasp. Before I could say anything he slit h
KEVIN’S POV I groaned as I tried to open my eyes but they seemed as if they were glued together. My arms and legs were numb and no matter how hard I tried they wouldn’t budge. It didn’t take me long to realize that I was tied up with ropes.I racked my brain trying to figure out how I got here. The last thing I remembered the explosion. I had somehow managed to survive it. Then everything was bleary. There were some glimpses of a woman talking to me but I couldn’t figure out what she said.“So, you are awake, Kevin. Right on time I see…” A familiar voice sounded to my left. I tried to open my eyes. I could sense the fluttering of my eyelids but all I could see was darkness.Tugging at the ropes, I said in a panicked voice, “Cami! I don’t know how I ended up here. Please help me untie these ropes. I have to go to my packhouse…”“I felt a soft sensation as she
KIARA’S POV My lips spread into a wide smile as I watched Nivaan and Richard train the werewolves in the use of silver weapons. Alpha Orville and Alpha Rodreo had agreed to help us and had sent five volunteers each to learn the techniques. We had hired human designers to design special clothes and gloves for all the werewolves. This would keep them safe while they wielded silver weapons.Draco had managed to snag a thousand pieces of jade rings from a dealer. Valence had already spelled them and immersed them in herbs. Now, she was busy guarding them.“Luna…” Layla’s sweet voice drew my attention to her. She was a young girl who had volunteered to take care of my health. Though she was a teenager, she sounded like my grandmom when she gave me advice.I chuckled slightly as she stood there glaring at me with a bowl of soup in her hand. She was surely going into grandma mode now.“Luna Kia
KIARA’S POV“Did she buy it?” I asked apprehensively the moment Richard returned.“She did. You were right. She is proud and arrogant. We just had to play the flattering card. She was gracious enough to give you five days to mourn the death of your mate. But…”“But what…”“I have a feeling that we can’t trust her to keep quiet. She is probably planning something.”“I know that, Richard. She is slier than a fox. We have to remain alert at all times. I let out a deep sigh and asked, “Did the Alphas agree to the meeting?”“Yes they did… but it did require some convincing.”I felt a sudden queasy sensation in my stomach and bile rose to my throat. I rushed to the bathroom and threw up violently. By the time I was done, I felt drained to my bones. The whirring sound of the flush resounded behind me as
KIARA’S POV Nivaan, Valence, Richard, and I were seated in the room trying to come up with a way to win the war when Adrian walked right in.Irritation started bubbling through my veins at his sight. The nerve of him to come here after what he had done. I glared at him and roared, “Stop right there, Adrian! Leave before I order my men to snap your head off…”His steps faltered, his eyebrows furrowed as he said, “Nancy! How can you say that? You have known me for so long…”“There is no ‘Nancy’ here. You are talking to the Luna of the Mystical Pack. You are talking to the woman whose father was killed…”His eyes widened in horror as he realized what I was hinting at. He rushed towards me and knelt in front of me. His eyes were pleading as he said in a shaking voice, “I know what I did was unpardonable but can you please give me a chance to explain mysel
KIARA’S POVIt had been ten days since I met Kevin near the lake. The tiny hope in my heart that he would come back and at least give me a chance to explain myself was getting bleaker and bleaker. In retrospect, maybe I should have followed him home; maybe I should have insisted that he listened to my part of the story. Weren’t we supposed to fight harder for what we wanted in life?“Nivaan! NIvaan!” I called out as I walked out of my tent. He came running moments later. Worry was evident on his face.He cupped my face and asked, “How are you feeling?”A bitter smile spread on my lips as I said, “Like my heart and soul has been ripped out of my body…”“I am so sorry, Love… I wish I could do something for you…”“Actually you can… I am done playing the victim card. Take me to the packhouse, I want to confront Kevin.”
KEVIN’S POV I had asked Collins to arrange a meeting with all the important members of the pack on the lawn. It was Seven days since father died yet these useless morons had not found out the killer. After a quick shower, I threw on a random shirt, a pair of jeans, and a jacket. I was about to leave when I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror.A sense of déjà vu assaulted me as I recalled the day Kiara had picked clothes for my meeting. I closed my eyes and clenched my teeth. No! I wasn’t allowed to go there. I couldn’t let myself have even a single moment’s joy till my father’s killer was on the loose.Letting out a long, deep sigh; I trotted outside. I had just entered the lawn when I noticed an unfamiliar scent, no several unfamiliar scents.“Alpha Kevin,” a man in a silver-colored suit stepped forward and bowed to me.“Alpha Rodriek… I didn’t
KIARA’S POV Every muscle in my body fought to transform as the howls reverberated in the environment. My bones crackled as my wolf struggled to take control but she was too weak.Pure agony coursed through my body overpowering every single coherent thought I had. I screamed at the top of my lungs but there was no one around to listen to me.The struggle between my weak wolf and my human body continued in a loop. Before long the pain blinded me and I was thrust into a state of complete darkness. The next thing I remember is waking up on the cold floor. I groaned as I pulled myself up. The dizziness weighed heavily on me as I fluttered my eyes to clear my vision. The sun was visible just above the horizon. I didn’t have the energy to figure out whether it was sunrise or sunset. The only thought that came to my mind was that I had to find Kevin.Dragging myself to my feet, I trudged outside. With slow labored steps
