Polly had been unable to stop thinking about Sergei. It felt like a drug had been injected into her veins. No matter what she did—walked, slept, ate, trained—the thought of him was always with her. His dark, Russian features; the sound of his voice; his translucent skin, his sharp features; and his incredible, hypnotic singing voice. She had never met anyone remotely like him.

She also couldn’t stop thinking about the way he had treated her. He had been so brazen, so arrogant. No boy had ever treated her like that before. What was it about him? What made him feel so entitled? Why had she allowed him to treat her that way? And more importantly, when he had, why hadn’t she just walked away?

She couldn’t understand it. Logically, she should hate him. Yet, for some crazy reason she couldn’t understand, she couldn’t stop thinking of him.

Polly strode down the hall at a quick pace. She had chosen her finest dress, a lightweight, light blue, with a white lace trim, elaborate white collars,

Caitlin walked with Aiden in the early morning light, winding their way slowly through the forest, Ruth at her heels. They had been walking like this together, silently, for what felt like hours. On the one hand, no words needed to be exchanged. As always, when she was around Aiden, she felt like she already knew everything he was going to say.Yet at the same time, she rarely knew precisely what he was thinking. What she wanted to know most of all was if he remembered everything. From the look in his eyes, she sensed that he did.Aiden had a funny way of showing up at the strangest moments in her life. Every time she felt like she was at a crossroads, every time she felt unsure of what direction to take, he seemed to appear. And each time he led her back on the path, and she realized he was right—that she should not give up the search for the Shield, for her father, for her own identity. But once she got away from him, once other things happened, it became harder to see clearly. Jus

Sam walked the grounds of Versailles alone, trying to collect his thoughts. He walked down an ambling path, twisting and turning its way through perfectly trimmed hedges. Ever since he’d met Kendra, he had been able to think of little else. There was something about her: she was so young, and her skin was so smooth and flawless, and her aqua eyes completely hypnotized him. When she looked at him, with the full power of those eyes on him, he had been able to think of nothing else. And even now, after an entire day had passed since he’d seen her, he still could think of little else. He was intoxicated by her.He had been shown his room, and was still waiting for Aiden to summon him, and in the meantime, he didn’t know what else to do, other than wait. So he had shown himself the grounds. He had stopped and watched for a while, with interest, as his fellow vampires sparred. He admired their techniques. But even as he watched them, he felt his own strength surging within him, and he knew

Kyle stood before the Bastille, hiding in the shadows in that special moment between darkness and light. He knew this would be the time of the changing of the guard, when the night shift vampires would be replaced by the day ones. He knew this would be the moment when they were most vulnerable to attack, and when they would least expect it.He only needed one entry point. One weak, young, vulnerable, and inexperienced vampire. He could take him out, and get inside. It was a crucial first step. Before he could direct Napoleon and his men in a full-fledged attack, he needed to do his reconnaissance first. He needed to make sure that the savage seven were still down there, and he needed to find the angle to set them free.He watched, and waited. This was a funny building, the Bastille, a circular, stone tower that rose right up to the sky. It almost looked like a lighthouse in the center of the city. There were no windows— just a few iron bars here and there. Kyle spotted the multiple

Holding Ruth in her arms, Caitlin flew beside Aiden, high over the country. She looked down and watched as the landscape changed. At first, they had flown over the shoreline, and she had watched the crashing waves, the magical cliffs and beaches; then they had turned towards land, and the landscape changed to rolling hills, then to woods. It was an entirely new part of France, one she had never seen, and she couldn’t believe how endless this country seemed.Caitlin felt torn with mixed emotions as she flew. On the one hand, she was happy to be beside Aiden, beside someone she knew and trusted, someone who, she knew, would not abandon her. She was excited to see wherever it was he would take her, and excited to begin her training and her mission anew. She wondered if she might see Polly there, and the thought warmed her. She also wondered if Blake could be there, and the thought left a pit in her stomach. She wasn’t sure how she would react to that.At the same time, her heart still

Caitlin found herself walking with Aiden through a path in the woods. She could tell that he was silently fuming, as he hadn’t spoken a word since he’d summoned her to follow him. After the fight, he’d led her outside the circle, away from the others, and had lifted off in flight with her. She had followed, feeling like a chastised schoolboy. She didn’t like the feeling. She felt that she was old enough now to be able to learn her own lessons from the fight. Besides, Cain had had it coming. Now they tramped endlessly through forest, until finally, they came to a large clearing in the woods. The sunlight broke through the trees, lighting it up.Aiden finally stopped and turned to her.“I’m disappointed in you,” he said.“It wasn’t my fault!” Caitlin snapped back, preparing her defense. “You saw the fight. He fought dirty, from the beginning.”“It doesn’t matter. You should have transcended that.”“He was trying to hurt me. To really hurt me. Even when the fight was over.”“You l

Sam stood in the Roman Colosseum. He was dressed in full battle gear, armed from head to toe, wearing a helmet. He looked out through it to see another warrior facing him, also dressed in full armor. He charged, and the two of them sparred furiously. The warrior facing him was bigger and stronger, but Sam parried with him blow for blow. Sam was getting more and more tired with each strike, and finally, his arms were too heavy to lift. He sunk to his knees, as the warrior raised his sword high, ready to plunge it into Sam’s chest.Sam blinked and opened his eyes to see that he was standing in the desert, the hard-baked sand stretching beneath his feet as far as his eye could see. In the distance was a giant mountain, and Sam found himself slowly hiking up it, using his sword as a staff. He was now dressed in a white robe.Sam pulled back his hood, dying in the heat, and looked up the mountain. There, at the top, was a man outlined by the sun. The man also wore a white robe and hood,

As Caleb flew away from his home, from Caitlin, his heart was breaking. He had seen the hurt on her face, and the last thing he had ever wanted to do was hurt her. He had never imagined he would ever leave her side. There was nothing he wanted more than to stay there, and be with her. In fact, he had been preparing to propose to her.But the news of his son was just too much to handle. It was not about Sera—if the message had come from anywhere in the world, he would have dropped everything and raced to see his son. Sera was, in fact, the last thing on his mind. But Jade was overwhelmingly on his mind. He still felt crushed by guilt for letting him die back in Venice. He would do anything—anything—to have him back. And if that meant having to interact with Sera, even briefly, he would do it. Caitlin and Caleb flew out of the ceiling of the Notre Dame, and into the night air. They flew together over the small Ile de la Cite. As they did, Caitlin was wracking her brain, trying to think where to go next, where that key might lead. She kept thinking of the letter, kept turning her father’s words over and over in her head.Don’t forget: the island is a big place. It had bothered ever since she’d read it. The island is a big place. The island is a big place. Was there somewhere else on the island, she suddenly wondered, that could hold the final key? Some place close to the Notre Dame? Her adversaries—Kyle, Sergei and Kendra—had managed to infiltrate her coven, and had discovered to meet her in the Notre Dame. But no one else had seen the second half of that letter. And no one else realized that it led to something else. To one final clue. One final place. Everyone else thought the Notre Dame was the final destination, Caitlin realized. But it wasn’t.“Where now?” Caleb ask

Caitlin flew the short distance from Saint Germain Des Pres over the Seine river, and then over the Ile de la Cite. She circled the small, narrow island slowly, trying to take it all in. There, of course, was the Notre Dame, huge, enormous, towering over everything, the largest building on the island. It was an overwhelming structure. The thought of finding whatever it was she needed inside it seemed daunting. She circled the island again, trying to take it all in context, and noticed that the Notre Dame wasn’t the only building on it. There were rows of medieval houses, crooked alleyways, cobblestone streets, and other buildings spread throughout. She looked down to see if the mobs were here, too, as they seemed to be everywhere else in Paris. Strangely enough, they were not. In fact, the square in front of the Notre Dame was completely empty. She found that to be odd. Why would the masses revolt everywhere else in the city, but not in its most famous place? Who was controlling them,

Caleb flew through the night, determined to rush back to Caitlin’s side. He hated himself. He didn’t understand how he could have been so stupid, so naïve. So easily misled.Worse, he had left Caitlin for nothing. He had ruined their moment, the very time he was about to propose, the very peak of their love, to run off for an illusion. For a false belief that his son was still alive. He would never forgive Sera for what she’d done. For ruining his life—again. But more importantly, he would never forgive himself for being so stupid. He should have listened to Caitlin, and stayed put.As he flew, Caleb closed his eyes, and the image passed through it again: he recalled his arriving back at his castle, and the sinking feeling of finding it empty. Caitlin gone. He had run through empty room after empty room, and had finally realized that she had left him.Ever since then, he had combed the skies, had looked for her everywhere. Now he was combing Paris, block by block. As he did, he r

Caitlin unrolled the new scroll with shaking hands. Her heart pounded as she realized that it was the second half of her Dad’s letter. She quickly took out the first half of the letter, unrolled it, and held it up to this one. As she put them together, she saw that the ridges fit perfectly, and that now, finally, it was one complete letter. She read the entire letter again, from the beginning:My dearest Caitlin:If you are reading this, you have already surpassed many obstacles. It means that you have already chosen to travel the road less traveled, to take the difficult path. For that, I commend you. You are truly your father’s daughter. You must forgive all the riddles, codes, letters, and keys, but the secret that I guard is most powerful, and must be broken into fragments, to prevent others from decoding it. As Sam stood there, in the entryway of Versailles, watching hordes of masses storm the steps, he broke into action. He ran to help all the guards, who were scrambling to restore the huge double doors. But the human guards weren’t strong enough to lift them back up in time. Sam leapt forward, and, using his strength, pulled them up by himself, restoring them back into place. He quickly scanned the room, and spotted a huge, wooden beam mounted above the fireplace. It looked like the size of an ancient tree trunk, and like it would take twenty men to lift.Sam ran over to it, and to the shocked look of the guards, he hoisted it alone, carried it across the room, and slammed it in front of the doors, barring them.Just in time. Moments later, there came the pounding of hundreds of fists at the door, as the masses tried to get in.Thanks to Sam, the door seemed to be holding. At least for now.As Sam stood there, he was soon joined by Aiden, the twins, and all the other coven members.

Changed forever. Turned. One of his race. Just as Samantha had turned him.He recalled how difficult it was for him when he first woke, and came to the realization. But then again, it wasn’t something he had asked for. It had been thrust upon him. In her case, she had asked for it, had begged him to turn her.
