IMEELA

I dove into the water and quickly moved underneath a rock outcropping. It was perfect to shield me from the bounty hunter that was on my trail.

He would not be able to follow my scent because of my ability to mask it. Would it not be great if it could last all day and night? Sadly, that was not the case. It only worked for about twenty minutes at a time. Imagine that there was a meter showing how much ability was left. Once it reached empty, it had to be refueled. That took about two hours, so this was an ability that I tried to reserve for emergencies. Case in point, right now.

He let out a frustrated growl when he was standing on the outcropping ledge. I pushed away my amusement of the fact that he apparently hated me for losing my trail. He was not the first vampire that I had evaded and would not be the last.

“I’ll not be back tonight,” a deep voice said from above. “No, everything is not okay. I lost her trail, and you know what that means. I’m going to head back to town because that’s where she’d been staying. She’s bound to return at some point, and I’ll be waiting to deliver her to Boss. Don’t tell a soul though.”

I listened to his retreating steps but did not move a muscle and would not until I knew for a fact that he was gone.

It had been a long ten years that I had been running, hiding, and trying to survive.

My coven had been massacred when I was ten years old. My bodyguard, Emilio, had escaped with me before we succumbed to the same fate as everyone else. He was by my side for six years until he sacrificed himself in order to save me, taking the blade that had been meant for me. Luckily, I was able to kill his murderer and flee before anyone else found me.

The Precoza coven had been the royal coven of the vampire world. My parents, Desmond and Sadira, were amazing leaders. They were technically the King and Queen but were very humble about it. They never let the titles go to their heads. Our kind flourished underneath their reign. They prohibited acts such as slavery, feeding rooms, and unprovoked attacks against other covens and species. Obviously, there were many vampires who believed that they were superior to every other species and had the right to do whatever they pleased with those that they felt were lesser than them.

On my birthday, of all times, the coven was decimated with the exception of Emilio and myself.

We had always assumed that the multitude of bounty hunters were tasked with killing me since I was the rightful heir to the throne and could reclaim it at any point in time, which many people did not want. Why then would this one mention that he was going to be taking me to his boss?

Confused was my general state of being at this moment in time, but I knew that I needed to shake it off and keep my head in the game.

I waited another fifteen minutes before I quickly climbed out of the water, looking all around me to ensure that there was nobody in hiding.

My senses were sharper than many vampires because of my heritage as well as spending a decade on the run. Royals typically had stronger senses and abilities compared to the rest, which was something that I was extremely thankful for.

After an hour of walking, I happened across a cave. I needed a place to regroup, eat, and rest. Luckily, there were not any animals that I had to evict from their home. I had nearly lost a hand in the first cave that I found after Emilio died. The bear only got as far as it did because I had just lost Emilio the day before. However, that bear became dinner.

Animal blood was absolutely disgusting, but it would work in a pinch when there was no other option. Sometimes I would come across a blood donation trailer and would compel a worker to acquire a few bags for me. If that was not an option then I would have to lure a human in but would only take just enough to keep going. I absolutely abhorred the idea of doing that, but desperate times called for desperate measures.

My parents had instilled in me the belief that we should only feed from willing humans. That was precisely why they had a very popular blood donation program put in place. Sadly, all of that seemed to have gone out of the window for the most part.

I pulled out my map and my last granola bar. Luckily, vampires could supplement their diet with regular food instead of it strictly requiring blood. Although it had been a very long time since I had enough of either, it was better than being dead. Small miracles. I would need to either hunt, find more regular food, or find blood soon.

A long sigh escaped my lips. Instead of thinking about what I did not have, I focused on my next course of action.

I was currently outside of Purdy, Virgina. My next stop was Emporia, which was nearly a five-hour walk, but I knew that there were plenty of places there to get things that I needed. Emilio had prepared me in every possible way that he could, which included knowing the best places to gather supplies from. It also helped that there was not a known vampire presence in Emporia. That was precisely why I stuck to small towns and avoided cities at all costs.

There were some benefits to being a royal for vampires. Our senses were stronger, as were our abilities, and we had a higher tolerance for certain things such as being in the sun, harmful poisons such as vervain, and we healed quicker.

The majority of humans, and a good portion of supernaturals, did not have a firm understanding of vampires. There were two types – born and made.

Born vampires had a heartbeat, blood that ran through our veins, we aged, slept, and could reproduce. We could go out in the sunlight, but the effects of it ranged from person to person. Said effects were minimized based on the vampire’s age and rank. I was young, but my rank was technically a Princess – I tried not to scoff at that thought, but I failed – so, the sun had very little effect on me. That was precisely why I preferred to travel during the daytime. It minimized my risk of discovery.

Made vampires were those who were bitten. They were essentially frozen in time from the moment that they finished their transformation. There was no heartbeat and could not reproduce. They also could not endure the sunlight.

There were many legends surrounding the origins of our species, but for every truth there were hundreds of alternatives. That was what made the truth difficult to pinpoint. My father once told me that our archives held the truth, so he shared with me what that was. Three very powerful witches had banned together to create a powerful type of creature that would be able to help protect those who needed protection.

Our kind was originally intended to be bodyguards, but somewhere along the line, our purpose was tainted by those seeking even more power. A born vampire ended up turning a human, and it created the first made vampire. Others saw this and got the idea that they would be able to claim power if they had an army behind them. Luckily, some of those creating the army realized the damage that they were doing, the chaos that they were causing, and decided to fight against the very beings that they had helped create.

I sighed and unpacked my hiking bag, rolling out my small sleeping bag. Luckily, it was still warm enough during the night so that I would not end up freezing my ass off. Always loathed winter on the run. It was easier when Emilio was here because we could absorb body heat from each other.

Emilio was an amazing man. He had been twenty-one when we had escaped. My father had been the one who told him to take me and keep me alive. Emilio never once blamed me for the fact that he had to essentially parent me and had to live the way we did. Not him. He saw the honor in it as well as the pride.

With a small shake of my head, I got inside the sleeping bag and rested my head on the pack. My special knife was right beside me. It was made of copper and mercury with pieces of silver imbedded in the blade. This knife was dangerous to other vampires, but I had immunity to it because it was created and blessed by a powerful witch. It would not hurt anyone who was descended from the Precoza line.

That night I dreamed of the family I had lost long ago. Time did not heal those wounds, but it did make their memories more cherished. I never truly knew what I had until it was gone in the blink of an eye. Every fond memory reminded me that I never showed my family how much I loved them. It was the same way that every pain I felt reminded me that they were gone.

I was startled from sleep when something wet and warm touched my face. My eyes snapped open, immediately ready for a fight, but I was highly surprised with what it was that had decided to lick my face.

The most adorable gray wolf pup was sitting next to my head. I had never seen one up close like this. Its eyes were an odd, but beautiful, shade of green. This was a brave little pup because it did not even show an ounce of hesitation around an apex predator. Many animals were naturally wary of vampires, but not this little one.

“Hey there, little one. What are you doing in here?” I asked softly, not wanting to startle it.

It had been four long years since I had any type of companionship, so this was a nice change of pace.

The wolf walked closer and curled its body into mine. There was some blood on his fur, a deep gash that was created by some type of predator. I rolled it a little so that I could see the wound better. This little female pup had multiple gashes, making me extremely curious about what happened.

The good news was that vampire blood had healing properties that could be used on both supernatural and natural species alike. So, I bit my finger and put it near her mouth. She sniffed it and curiously licked the blood. It would not take much to heal her, so I was happy when I saw the gashes close up.

She looked down at her side where she had been hurt before tilting her head and cuddling with me again. Wolves were generally very intelligent creatures, and I could see that she had that quality as well.

“What shall I name you, little one?” I asked her softly while petting her head. “What about Sadi? Mom’s name was Sadira. Mom always had a habit of coming to me when I needed her most. I think that she knew that I needed you and sent you to me. What do you think of the name, Sadi?”

She yipped at me, so I took that to mean that she approved.

It was still dark out, so I had a little while before I was good to head out. If we saw her pack then I would bring her back to them, but if I did not then I would take her with me because it would be too dangerous for her to survive out here on her own.

“Let’s get a little bit more sleep, Sadi,” I said, covering her up as best I could.

JACKSON Meeting Blaine was almost enough to dispel this heavy feeling that the secrecy surrounding this mission was causing. I was thankful that things had gone the way that they did thus far. He deserved to have a life that was filled with happiness and freedom. A life on the run did not provide that. Now, he would be able to live his life for himself. We were currently driving through the backwoods of Virginia. I had no idea where we were going, but I would find out soon enough. The further that we drove, the more an uneasiness spread throughout me. It made no sense to me though, so I just kept my focus on the blurring scenery. “Jacksy, I need you to listen to me carefully,” Brynn said, meeting my eyes through the rearview mirror. I nodded for her to continue. Perhaps now she would be kind enough to fill in some details. Anything at all would do. I was not even that picky. “In about twenty minutes, you’re going to find out why this trip was necessary and why we brought warriors

JACKSON The men’s heads snapped towards me, so she took that opportunity to slice the guy that was right next to her and move backwards further away from them all. Her eyes met mine and widened. Then they turned back to the three bastards around her, focusing on the immediate threat. We quickly slid down the slope. I shot forward the moment that my feet hit the ground. Adrenaline pumped through my veins, propelling me towards the bastard who dared to utter a single word to my mate. His attention was solely on me, which was good because I would make sure that he learned the painful consequences that anyone who tried to hurt her would learn. It did not matter that I did not even know her name. It did not matter that I had not even gotten a good look at her yet. The moment that I realized she was mine was the moment that I had vowed to protect her as such. He was faster than me because of his vampire abilities, but that did not mean he was superior. If Brynn had taught me anything th

IMEELA How in the world did I end up willingly walking through the woods with a group of strangers? Nobody since Emilio had ever helped me with the countless vampires who had come after me throughout the years. I lost track after a while, but I would venture to say upwards of a hundred. I had either been lucky enough to evade them or had to eliminate them. I used to feel a lot of guilt and shame over eliminating them, but Emilio taught me the hard truth: it was either them or me. Now, do not get me wrong. I was thankful for them coming, but I was at a complete loss of what to do. Four years had been spent completely on my own. Six years prior to that were spent with one other person. Now, a fated beloved swooped in and saved the day. Not to mention that we would be heading back to their pack. Staying in one place would be a foreign concept to me. Could I do it though? Honestly, the thought of remaining sedentary sent a thrill of excitement through me. It would be weird as hell, bu

She had held her own very well until the time came when we were permitted to interfere.Brynn had gotten me out of bed for a road trip but would not tell me where we were going. Luckily, she had the forethought to bring warriors with us. Then I came to find out that she had been having visions of my mate but did not tell me because she knew how hard it would be for me to hear about her but did not know where she was or if she was okay. And she had been right, so I would give her a pass on that.Goddess, Imeela fought them like a lethal assassin. You could tell that she was an experienced fighter. Not only was she deadly, but she was fucking gorgeous too. The most intense hazel eyes, high cheekbones, and full lips. She was underweight from not getting enough food for whatever reason. • Design of Fate   Chapter 7

IMEELA My mind was positively reeling. Never in a million years would I have thought that the vampire at the door would turn out to be my uncle of all people. I had a few memories of my mother mentioning him. The resemblance was uncanny. He and my mother had the same color of hair and eyes. He looked older than I remembered compared to what she did, but vampires typically aged gracefully. I had been all alone for so long that I honestly thought I would also die alone. It was heartwarming to hear someone speaking positively about my amazing parents. They had been in my heart alone for so long, but now their memory was able to truly live on. And it was freeing in a way that I had not expected to ever feel. What did Jackson think about my parentage? Worry caused my gut to churn. Honestly, I was very confused about my personal feelings regarding our bond. Emilio had been my closest companion. That was the extent of my experience with the opposite sex. I had never kissed anyone, let alo

JACKSON Zeus and I were thankful that she was willing to stay here. That we would not have to worry for her safety outside of this pack. Just the thought of something happening to her was enough to twist us up inside. I knew that she did not have much at all and would need clothes, toiletries, and personal items. Here was the issue with that though – convincing her to let me help with it. I could tell that she was an extremely independent person, which was something that I highly respected, but I knew that it would be next to impossible to convince her unless I was able to make it appeal to her independent nature so that it was not seen as a handout or me saying it was my obligation as her mate. Thus, I decided to make it about a trade instead. Essentially, we would be getting the things that she wanted and needed. In return, she would help train me with her incredible fighting skills. She was hesitant to accept it at first, but the logical side of her mind must have pointed out the

IMEELAThe tenderness that Jackson had shown me in the short time since I had known him was really heartwarming.I had gotten so angry at the bitch who would not leave him alone even though he clearly dismissed her twice. An odd feeling had bubbled up inside of me, and I did not like her trying to claim his attention even though he did not want to give it. I appreciated the fact that he wanted nothing to do with her.A possessiveness rose up, so I made sure to show her that she had no claim to him. I had been originally worried that he would be upset that I had shared anything about our bond without discussing it first, but he was quick to reassure me.My skin tingled where his lips had pressed against my forehead, and part of me wondered if it would tingle for him to kiss my lips. That thought alone made me blush hard.I actually enjoyed myself shopping. He had a great eye for what looked good, and he made me feel sexy, which was something that I had never felt before. Yet, when he lo

  • Design of Fate   Chapter 10

JACKSON A scream ripped me from sleep, causing my heart to pound violently against my chest. My eyes swept the room, looking for any sign of danger. I jumped out of bed when I heard her scream again and made my way to her door. I took a deep breath and knocked on her door. Zeus was just as antsy as I was because our mate was distressed, but we were not certain what the best course of action would be. Hearing her heartbreaking sobs made my decision for me. She could be pissed off at me all she wanted to, but I could not just stand back and ignore her pain. I turned the doorknob, thankful that it was not locked, and slowly pushed the door open. Her body was tangled up in her bedding, showing just how restless she was. The tear stains on her face pained me too. She thrashed back and forth, begging and pleading for someone to forgive her. Goddess, her pain pushed out from her, making my own eyes water. Was this what she always dealt with on her own? I needed to figure out the diffe

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for how much support you have given me throughout these books. I love reading all of your comments, whether they were negative or positive, and use them to help shape the story as it evolves. Jackson and Imeela’s story was one story that I could not begin to write. I know that not everyone was thrilled during Theo’s story when Jackson took Brynn’s side after the rejection. However, it just showed the type of man that he was. The one who would help protect those who needed it, just like he did with Brynn. One thing that many of you had mentioned was that you enjoyed the species integration seen throughout this book and the Fated series. We will see the byproduct of that during the Legacies of Destiny series. Kalen’s story will be the first one, followed by

The peace that our world experienced would be wiped away, leaving nothing but pain and chaos in its wake. The only way to prevent this was for me to identify the supernatural that was aiding him. Run and do not look back. There will come a day when she returns here to avenge us, but it will be when she is older. We have every faith in you when it comes to protecting one of the most important gifts that we have ever been given and will never be able to express just how much we appreciate it. We have always loved you like a son, so let me give you one last piece of advice. Do not harbor guilt for leaving instead of fighting alongside the coven because you are protecting the future of our kind. That is the most important mission that has ever existed.’Those were his parting words. As much as he said not to harbor guilt… it was easier said than done. • Design of Fate   Epilogue 2

JACKSON At the same conference as Epilogue 1 – I could not be any prouder of Lola as I watched her get everything prepared for her presentation. She worked her ass off to get to where she was at right now in life. Nothing held her back, and nothing slowed her down. It had been hard for her at first because she desired to be independent, but not everyone could communicate with her and vice versa. My amazing mate was the one who could break through her barriers and encourage her to get right back up. I had never seen Lola happier than when Ziyah had given her the hearing aids that she created for her years back. Lola was born deaf, so she never had the opportunity to hear people speak to her or around her. She never had the ability to listen to the sounds of nature. While she could not do anything for the second part, Ziyah had been able to fix it to where the words were picked up by the devices and then sent as a mindlink. A lot of attention to detail was found in how they worked.

IMEELASix years later –I checked my appearance one last time just to make certain that I looked presentable for the supernatural conference that we were attending. The pencil dress came to my knees. The top was white with a notched neck and three-quarters sleeves. The bottom was black with strips of black and white crisscrossing the waist. My hair was pulled into a low side bun with my newly designed diadem.Honestly, I hated wearing the crown in public, which this conference was, but our normal diadems were not official enough, according to our Cabinet, so we designed new ones that were more official looking. They were more pronounced with the Precoza crest designed within it.I opted for a natural look with my makeup, so it just highlighted my features. Luckily, my mates did not care if I wore makeup or not because it was not something that I cared about either.“You look beautiful, Mom,” Zion said from behind me.I turned around and smiled at my handsome son. IMEELAZiyah had called me earlier and said that she had something special for Lola that should help the most with her deafness.Lola was a blessing in disguise when we first met her. She had been through so much in her short life, but it proved that she was strong and resilient enough to soldier on and keep going. Her biggest hurdle in life was learning to navigate being deaf in a supernatural world. There were many shows and movies out there that show how easy it was to overcome that hurdle and still live a completely normal life. That might be how it worked for humans, but it was extremely dangerous for supernaturals. Our world was a chaotic one where we always had to look out for the dangers hiding in the shadows, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.Lola was so fucking strong that it made us incredibly proud of her. She had learned how to read lips with damn near perfect accuracy. She was also learning how to defend herself against any attack. Zion took it upon himself t

Thankfully, he liked me enough to allow my continued breathing. It only took training with vampires for about four months before I could keep up with them entirely speed wise. Strength was a different matter because there was a biological difference between our species. However, sealing the bond with my girl gave me additional strength. I might not have been able to deck a vampire quite as hard as another one could, but it did not matter. I just had to be more strategic on when and where to hit. However, the blessing of strength that Hecate had given to me at the coronation and also the boost from being crowned King put me as close as possible to being at the level of vampires. My fist connected in an uppercut, causing Santiago to fly up and backwards with his ass landing on the ground. He just laid there, panting heavily.
