Chapter 2

Author: Three Yellow Cows
Sophia watched as Cindy blew the candles and closed her eyes to make a wish. She couldn't help but turn to look at my father, Steven, as she wiped her tears away.

Steven quickly hugged Sophia. "Sophia, what's the matter?"

Sophia shook her head. "It's nothing. I just suddenly recalled how tiny Cindy looked when she was born. In the blink of an eye, she's grown to be healthy and so beautiful."

Steven chuckled in relief. "Oh, you…"

However, he was interrupted before he could say anything further.

"Look at that! Dad and Mom are whispering."

Cindy's crisp, clear voice was heard. Although she interrupted their conversation, nobody was upset with her.

Mark moved closer. "That's right. Cindy's cutting her cake right now. Dad, Mom, you'll have all the time in the world to show your affection to each other."

Steven pointed helplessly at his children.

Suddenly, Cindy looked down and murmured, "I wonder how Rachel is doing. It's her birthday, too."

When Steven heard this, he frowned. "Why did you bring her up?"

"She's my sister. If it hadn't been for me, she wouldn't have had to…" Cindy frowned in an uneasy manner.

"That's enough." Steven waved his hand. "Rachel was destined to end up that way. Consider it her way of atoning her evil mother's sins."

When I heard that, I got so furious that I laughed.

This place had always made me uncomfortable, and I wanted nothing but to leave. Despite that, there was an unknown force binding me to the Lamberts.

What was going on?

I couldn't escape while I was alive, and now that I had died, I was still being forced to listen to their horrible comments about me. Did I have to watch while they lived a happy life?

Soon enough, I stopped struggling.

After all these years, I had gotten used to all this. Growing up, the Lamberts had said such things countless times.

Because of my biological mother, I was branded a sinner from birth.

Although I was also Steven's biological daughter, he and everyone in the Lamberts family perceived me as a sinner. I was a constant reminder of Steven's mistake.

My name was Rachel Lambert. I was an unwanted child.

I was Steven's illegitimate daughter.

To be more specific, I was a stain in his otherwise picture-perfect life.

In his youth, Steven was handsome and dashing. To add, he was wealthy and generous. As the head of the Lamberts, he was surrounded by all sorts of women.

My mother, Lucy Smith, was one of them.

Her family did everything they could to raise her well. She came from a wealthy family, and she was incredibly smart.

Unfortunately, she lost her senses after meeting Steven.

Having fallen head over heels in love with him, she did everything to make him hers—despite knowing how he already had feelings for Sophia, who later became his wife.

Seeing how Steven would soon marry Sophia because she was pregnant, Lucy drugged him and slept with him.

Towards the later stage of Sophia's pregnancy, Lucy plotted a mess in Steven's company. While Steven rushed to fix it, she showed up at their house with her visibly protruding belly. It irritated Sophia so much that she gave birth prematurely to the frail and sickly Cindy.

By the time Steven heard about the news and rushed to the hospital, he only saw the weakened Sophia. She held onto an incubator with Cindy inside, pale and wan. Meanwhile, I was wrapped up in a blanket and left in the ward on my own.

Lucy disappeared. Nobody knew where she had gone.

Steven was forced to raise me as part of the family. However, that was all he did.

My existence was a constant reminder that he was tricked by a woman he looked down upon, one that nearly took the lives of his wife and his daughter.

She could only do her best not to shift her anger towards me.On top of that, her daughter, Cindy, had been in poor health since she was born, requiring her to put in even more effort to look after Cindy.Sophia was naturally too occupied to pay attention to me.Back then, there was a big fuss over this. Nearly everyone in our social circle knew where I came from. Naturally, the Lamberts' maids were no exception. They could see that my parents didn't treat me well. Although they wouldn't do anything obvious to a kid like me, they gossiped about me behind my back. Once I was old enough to understand, some of them began to bring up my sinful origin."She's a sinner's daughter!""A nasty child.""Her mother was evil. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree!"I could hardly count how many times I had heard such things. I didn't understand why I had to be blamed for my mot

Steven hardly doubted as much. The moment he saw Cindy was hurt, he decided I was the one who hurt her."You're just as evil as your mother!"As a result, I was moved to the small room closest to the maids' room. I was also ordered to follow the maids around daily. It was a fancy way of saying they would teach me to have better manners on behalf of my mother.I was powerless to resist.Fortunately, I was alert and clever. I was used to reading the room. Those who initially gossiped about me soon changed their attitude towards me. A few of the maids saw how hard I worked at such a young age, and began to sympathize with me.They secretly criticized my family for being inhumane. However, they only dared to take care of me in secret. That was the happiest time of my childhood. It was around then that Mark was born.He had a round face and dark eyes, his hands were soft and tender, and he was very healthy.Whenever he saw me, he would reach out to grab me with his fleshy fingers

"Rachel has already married into the Carpenters. Let them handle it," Steven said. Caleb actually didn't inform them about my death. This was unlike him. However, Steven's response was hardly surprising. He had always been so indifferent to me.Meanwhile, Sophia looked over inquisitively. Steven waved his hand, signaling that nothing was wrong. To ensure Cindy's birthday was a happy one, he didn't bother to mention what happened to me that day.Only after dinner the next day did he say calmly, "Rachel's dying."The dining table was already quiet, and the silence that fell afterward was even more potent. After a while, Mark said chirpily, "Dad, even if you wanted to teach me a lesson, you shouldn't make jokes like that."Cindy's eyes went wide as she looked at Steven. Clearly, she didn't believe this either.Steven seemed unfazed. "I heard she was involved in a car accident. She's in the ICU Now. Nobody knows if she'll make it through."Cindy's eyes were filled with tears. Sh

Taking advantage of the fact that no one else could see me, I circled around the crowd and took in everyone's reaction in the room.Sophia's reaction was just as I expected.Lucy was the culprit who had repeatedly tried to destroy her family, and nearly caused Sophia to lose her and her daughter's life.I wouldn't be surprised if Sophia pounced on Lucy at this point, let alone just standing still with a blank expression on her face.Cindy, on the other hand, shouldn't have known who Lucy was. Shouldn't she have been happy when she heard that the store owner was willing to give what she wanted to her?Instead, she was frozen in place. I watched as Steven closed his eyes in embarrassment, feeling zero interest in the turn of events.I could tell he was remorseful. That was when Mark approached with shuffling steps. The hesitation on his face was obvious. Steven, who was too annoyed to make a guess, simply asked, "What did you want to say?""Huh? Mark scratched his head and spun in place twice before deciding to voice his findings."The last time we were at the store, I saw Cindy avoiding that woman's gaze. It seemed like she had known that woman for a long time.""What did you say?!" Sophia grabbed Mark's hand violently. After the authorities received public opinion and launched an investigation into the incident, people realized that I might not have been the first victim.Caleb's past female partners either went missing, died, or kept their mouths shut about him. Caleb, or rather Lucy, used their power and money to erase all evidence.By the time my parents arrived at the hospital, all they saw was a handful of ashes in a tiny jar. In order to minimize exposure of the crime, Lucy instructed someone to get rid of my corpse. By now, she was no longer in the mood to imagine the expression on my parents' faces once they saw my corpse.I followed from a distance, but was surprised to see Randal and Steven facing each other off.Randal's hair had grown long.
