IRIS

“Why don’t you ever drink?”

Maverick and I had been dining for the past thirty minutes. I was on my second glass of wine, but he’d just ordered some sparkling water.

This wasn’t the first time I was noticing the fact that he never drank, I just didn’t know how to bring it up until right now.

Maverick raised his eyes to glance at me as he cut into his steak. “How long have you been wanting to ask me that?”

I shrugged. “A while.”

He leaned back in his seat, his gaze turning slightly hard. I warily kept my eyes trained on him, wondering whether he was going to answer truthfully or not.

And truthfully, there was only one reason I could think of.

“I just don’t drink,” he finally replied.

I nodded slowly, tilting my head slightly. “So, that’s why you just order a glass of whiskey at gatherings and just… hold onto it? Because you don’t drink?”

One side of Maverick’s mouth pulled up in a smirk. “Are you questioning me, Angel?”

I opened my mouth to reply, but before I could, a shadow fe

MAVERICK I would give anything for Iris to look at me the way she was looking at me now. Her annoyance had disappeared and now she was looking at me like I created the whole damn universe.I wanted her to look at me like that forever.“You did?” Her voice was barely above a whisper, and her eyes had begun to water. It wasn’t even a bit difficult to find the hospital where Chelsea was receiving treatment. Rhoda, Iris’s mother, had been living in Louisiana with eight-year-old Chelsea who had been battling leukemia for a while. My father had flown all the way over there to seek her out, no doubt, and he had seen how desperate she was and offered to cover her child’s treatment if only Rhoda would come back and kill her other daughter.Rhoda wasn’t getting out of that jail cell anytime soon, and I had plans for my father.Big fucking plans.“Yeah,” I replied. “She’s at a children’s hospital in Louisiana. I had the hospital arrange all the necessary papers, so all we have to do is bring he

IRIS After we landed, there was a car and a driver waiting to take us to our hotel.Keeping my gaze on the dark streets of Louisiana as we drove past, I tried to steady my raging nerves. My body still felt warm from the plane ride, but my mind was elsewhere.Tomorrow, I was going to meet my sister.I had no idea how to feel about it. A mix of excitement and anxiety pressed into my chest. My mother really had another daughter. Chelsea was real. And she was waiting for me.Words couldn’t express how grateful I was to Maverick Sinclair. He sat beside me, his hand rubbing circles on my thigh as he scrolled through his phone. He looked completely at ease, as if this was natural. As if it was just another night. My mind, on the other hand, was going in circles as I tried to process everything.I stole a glance at him, giving him a tired smile, because genuinely, I was tired.“You’re awfully quiet.”Maverick hummed, not looking up from his phone. “Just handling a few things.”“For work?”“F

MAVERICKI had to fight hard against my inner voices, because all they wanted was to thrust hard into Iris until she forgot her own damn name. But patience… That was the keyword, and I had to exercise it.Iris wasn’t a meal to be rushed. She was a meal to be enjoyed. To be savored. And I was going to savor every single taste and smell of her until I got my fill.“Hands back on the window, Angel,” I muttered into her hair, enjoying the way she shivered as she did what I said.“My obedient baby girl,” I said, and Iris arched her back in response, her ass grazing the front of my pants. Grazing my hard cock.I knew she would like that.I ran my middle finger along her slit, spreading her wetness over and around her clit. And then I began to massage it, circling around her pulsing clit as Iris’s shivering intensified.“Oh my God,” she moaned, her head falling back into my chest as I pushed two of my fingers into her dripping hole.“Always so damn wet for me,” I breathed as I fucked her wit

IRIS Nothing about the hospital calmed me. Not the smell of disinfectant or the distinct smell of air freshener in the air. Not the soft blue colored walls that had slight cracks in them. Not Maverick’s hand which was pressed against my lower back as we followed behind the nurse who had been assigned to take us to Chelsea’s room. My heart was pounding so hard and fast again my ribcage, I could barely hear anything over the sound of it. She was here. My baby sister, Chelsea. Every single step I took was heavier than the last and my pulse raced with a mix of anxiety and something else I couldn’t name. Fear? Anticipation? I had no idea. I could already feel the walls closing in. Could already feel the panic rising in my chest. With a jolt, I realized that it had been quite a while since my last panic attack. Maverick applied pressure to my lower back, leaning in so his mouth grazed my earlobe. “Iris.” His voice was low and steady, pulling me out of my thoughts. I turned to

IRIS Maverick’s footsteps were quiet, but I still felt him before I saw him. I lifted my head, my vision still blurry from all the tears that I’d refused to wipe away. And there he was, standing in the doorway, his tall frame tense as he leaned against the doorpost. His sharp eyes were zeroed in on me, and in his eyes was an expression that I couldn’t quite place. And then, in a voice that I wasn’t even sure he was capable of, he said, “Hey, little one.” Chelsea turned her head slightly, her small body still curled against me. And when she saw him, she blinked up at him, her big blue eyes filled with curiosity. “Who are you?” She asked, glancing at me, and then, back at him. Maverick stepped forward, slowly and carefully, as if he didn’t want to startle her. And then bent at the knees, crouching beside the bed so they were almost at eye level. “I’m Maverick,” he said, offering her a small smile. “I’m a friend of your sister’s.” Chelsea’s hand tightened weakly around my fing

MAVERICK I was dreaming.I had to be.There was no other way to explain it. No fucking way this was real. No fucking way that people could rise up from the dead.If Iris couldn’t see her, I would have gotten myself checked into a mental facility for seeing things. But she could. She could see. She just didn't know who she was.But I did. Layla Moss was dead. I’d woken up in the hospital, barely breathing, with people telling me she didn't make it. That she was gone. That they couldn’t even find her body.So how… how the fuck was she standing right here in my penthouse suite?“Layla?” I didn't even recognize my own voice. My legs were working on their own, moving forward, moving towards Layla. “What…how…”She tilted her head, sipping from the champagne flute, that damn smirk on her face. That was always a sign that she was about to mess with my head. She hadn‘t changed. Not one bit.“Just thought I’d surprise you, darling,” she said, winking at me. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”I t

MAVERICK “I can’t do this anymore.”The words felt like gravel in my throat, but I said them anyway. Because it wasn’t a matter of how I felt, it was a matter of necessity. This had to be done. For her. For me. For both of us.Layla stood frozen in the middle of my room, arms tightly wrapped around herself like she was trying to physically stop herself from falling apart. Her eyes searched mine. Wide. Wet. Disbelieving.“You… you don’t mean that.”“I do,” I said, softer now, but more firm. “We’re not good for each other, Layla. We haven’t been for a while.”We were an unhealthy pair. A toxic pair. And with everything that was going on in my life. My father. My brother. My grandfather…It was all too much. I couldn’t be here anymore. I couldn’t do this. Her head shook violently, and she let out a sharp laugh. “You’re just mad. We had a fight. IRIS I didn’t know how long I’d been sitting at the bar. Twenty minutes? An hour? I’d drank enough wine to last me the rest of the week. Hell, maybe even two weeks.I was more than tipsy. I was drunk.Funny how I was only impulsively drinking so I could try to forget what had happened in the suite, but now, that was all I could think about.I groaned, pressing a hand to my forehead.Layla.She was beautiful in a way that made me feel plain. More elegant than someone like me could ever be. She had captured Maverick’s heart once upon a time. And why wouldn’t she?All I could think about was her hand on his chest, on his jaw. The way Maverick looked at her. As if she was his whole world. Well, I mean, she had been at some point. But what if she still was?I didn’t know her, had never heard of her, but I could feel it. Maverick had once loved this woman. It made me think about him saying he doesn’t date. Was it because of her?Why the hell was she here? How on earth did she have access

IRIS “What are you going to do?” That was Megan’s question after Dwayne had stormed out. There had been an uncomfortable silence in the room for a while, both Megan and I lost in our thoughts. Me thinking about Maverick and Amethyst, and Megan?Well…“I don’t know,” I answered honestly, crossing my arms in front of my chest as I leaned back in my seat. “Maverick wasn’t exactly clear on what he was going to do to me.”I hated that I sounded bitter when I said that, but I couldn't help it.Maverick was about to do away with me. I was sure of it. This was going to be the end. That, maybe I could deal with. Maybe I could forfeit all the drama and the plans for revenge that we hadn’t even started to go into yet. But, Amethyst? How was I going to beg Maverick not to take her from me? The look in his eyes, him wanting to be alone with her…My greatest fear had come to life. Maverick was going to take Amy from me, and he was probably going to marry Layla because of how attached they were

IRIS The first thing I heard as soon as I opened the door to Megan’s room was the soft, steady beeping of the heart monitor.Other than that, it was quiet. Dwayne sat beside her bed, his elbows on his knees, head in his hands. His entire body was tense. Too still. The doctors said that Megan had woken up earlier, but now, she was asleep.“Hey,” I whispered.Dwayne’s head snapped up, and he looked at me warily, then shifted his gaze tp the door like he was expecting someone to come in.“Where’s Maverick?”I took a seat across from him. “With Amethyst.”That answer alone multiplied the tension in the room. Dwayne heaved a sigh, his hand moving to the back of his neck. And when his eyes met mine, he gave me a sheepish smile.“Sorry for my outburst earlier,” he muttered. “I was just—”“Dwayne,” I interrupted. “There’s no need to apologize, okay? I should be the one apologizing.”His eyes widened slightly and I swallowed nervously. “And you were right. This happened because of me. If Me

IRIS I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that the moment things went south, Layla would swoop in and try to “fix” things. But that still didn’t soften the hurt that I felt. Seeing Maverick wrap his arms around the girl that so obviously wanted him, was heartbreaking, to say the least. It pulled at something inside of me that shouldn’t have been pulled at all.But I had to remind myself that Maverick wasn’t mine. And that even if he was, I deserved whatever he was dishing out at me right now.Dwayne gave me a short glance, and I could see a hint of… worry or pity in his expression. And then, shaking his head at the scene before us, he disappeared into the corner, heading toward Megan’s room.I should’ve turned around. Should’ve taken one look at Maverick’s arms around her and left without saying a word. But I couldn't.My legs had frozen in place. My lungs refused to work. And my heart?God, my heart was cracking wide open.Layla turned slightly in mavericks arms, noticing me stan

MAVERICK Fucking hell.I stood outside the hospital, staring at the hood of my car like it had personally betrayed me.My pulse thundered nonstop in my ears and my knuckles ached from how tightly I’d been clenching my fists.I was going to fucking lose itI had a daughter. My own flesh and blood. And Iris Blake had kept her from me.It was funny, really. I didn’t even know if I was mad at her for hiding her in plain sight, or mad at myself for not figuring it out sooner. Before I could realize what I was doing, my fist was coming down against the roof of my car. Hard. I felt the impact from my fist down to my shoulder, but I didn’t care.So fucking stupid. That’s what I was. Too fucking stupid and lenient to dig into a woman who was important to my plan. But then again, maybe I just didn’t want to find out. With a sharp grunt, I started to punch down on my car again, but a voice stopped me short.“Careful there, bro.”I turned to see Dwayne walking toward me, hands in his pockets. • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER NINETY-EIGHT: WORDS LEFT UNSAID

IRIS The expression on Maverick’s face was either going to make me lose my breath, or ruin me. Either way, I was going to die. I shouldn’t have said that. Definitely shouldn’t have included Maverick in the list of the Sinclairs that I didn’t trust, but I couldn’t help it. I just… couldn’t trust him. But I couldn’t also help but feel like I’d made a horrible mistake. Not a mistake as horrible as keeping his daughter from him, but horrible nonetheless. Maverick sneered at me, and in a flash, my back slammed hard against the wall with my hands above my head. Maverick had pinned both my hands against the wall with one of his. “Give me one instance,” he seethed. “One instance where I made you feel like you couldn’t trust me. Where I caused you damage like you say the Sinclairs do.” I didn’t respond. Not because I didn’t want to, or because I couldn't. But because I didn’t have an answer to Maverick’s question. My lips remained parted, but no words came out. His jaw

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER NINETY-SEVEN: ALL YOU SINCLAIRS

MAVERICK I knew. Of course I fucking knew. I’d suspected for a long time, but I just didn’t want to find out. Didn’t want to believe that Iris would keep something as serious as this from me. My own daughter. Even after everything that Iris and I had been through, she had kept her from me. Had even fucking begged me not to dig into her. I should’ve. Respecting Iris’s wishes was a decision that I was going to regret for the rest of my life. “Maverick…” Iris’s voice cracked as she trailed off. That was all she could manage at this point. My name. Because there was nothing she could say or do to fix this. Dwayne arched his brow at me. “Yeah,” he muttered through his teeth. “That’s the fucking reaction I’ve been looking for.” Last week, Dwayne had told me that Megan had slipped and said something that hinted at Iris being Amethyst’s mother. I’d though it was a ridiculous mistake because there was no damn way that it was true. That didn’t mean I was able to stop thinking

IRIS Megan. My baby.My baby. My baby. My baby.I couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t think. Couldn’t even speak.I was a zombie when Maverick led me to his car. A zombie when he drove, but not oblivious to the worried stares that he kept throwing my way.But before Maverick had even parked the car in front of the hospital, I was already out. Already running inside. The ground was cold beneath my bare feet. At some point, I’d taken my shoes off, and I hadn’t even noticed. I had no idea where they were.“Iris!” I heard Maverick call behind me, but I was already disappearing through the doors. “Wait!”I was a zombie when I walked over to the reception. The nurses looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to say something.Anything.But I couldn’t. Even though my mouth opened, no words came out. My throat, my breathing. It was all constricted. Fear and panic wrapped themselves tightly around my chest, gripping me so harshly. Rendering me speechless.“How can we help you, Miss?”“My…m–my b—”“A w

IRIS “You know, it never really made sense why Layla would dye her hair until I saw you in this dress,” Ryan said as we turned into a corner. His gaze assessed me from top to bottom, and he had a slightly amused smirk on his face. “You look gorgeous, by the way.”I cleared my throat, shifting on my feet. “Thank you.”“I really wish my sister wasn’t so obsessed with that fucking guy. I hope you’ll excuse her shortcomings, Iris.”My brows shot up as I scoffed. “Shortcomings?”Ryan’s perfectly white teeth showed as he grinned, and I realized with a start that he had dimples on both cheeks. There was no doubt about Ryan’s gorgeousness. His blond hair was tousled stylishly and he had on a black button-down shirt that was tucked into same colored slacks. He was handsome in a way that was… rugged. Carefree. And I… was noticing way too much about him.Well, forgive me for being blinded by his smile.“Maybe a little more than shortcomings.” He let out a chuckle. “My sister can be… intense.”I

IRIS “Oh, you have got to be kidding me,” I muttered under my breath as Layla catwalked toward us, in the same hair and dress color as me. I mean, I could look past the dress because I didn’t really care about that. But… the hair? Was she that much of a psycho that she would change the color of her hair? “What are you doing, Layla?” I heard Maverick ask as she came to a stop in front of us. Layla assessed me from my head to my toes, an amused smile playing on her lips, and then she turned to Maverick, an innocent, wide-eyed look on her face. “Whatever do you mean, Mav?” Maverick clenched his jaw, his gaze steady as he glared at her. “Layla.” Layla let out a laugh, reaching for her hair to play with the strands. “Oh, you mean this? I wanted to try something new.” She pouted. “Are you upset? I know how much you loved my blonde hair. You said you never wanted me to dye it, remember?” Maverick’s arm tightened around my waist, the only sign that Layla’s taunts were affecti
