MAVERICK

Iris watched me expectantly, waiting for me to tell her the reason I wanted her to marry me in order to carry out my revenge plan.

It was such an easy thing to do, yet I hesitated to speak. The emotional part of everything was a long-gone phase, and all I felt was just anger. Anger towards my brother, and my father.

I would tell Iris all that she needed to know, but I wasn't about to delve into my past with someone I didn't know.

Where do I start?

“Did Sebastian ever tell you that he was next in line to be the CEO after my father stepped down?”

She chewed on her bottom lip as she considered my question. Iris had no idea how attractive the little things she unconsciously did were.

“Um, yeah. A few weeks before the divorce,” she looked away from me, but not before I saw the pained expression on her face and noticed the way her voice cracked at the word ‘divorce’. “He was excited about taking over from your father. He was always obsessed with being CEO, he just…”

She turned bac

IRIS I sat there, waiting for the punchline. Maybe he was messing with me, maybe he was just throwing in a light joke and I was supposed to laugh. But nothing about this felt funny to me. The silence between us was suffocating as Maverick’s grey eyes stayed locked on mine, unwavering. Expectant.Marriage was one thing I could put my foot in. I’d been married before, I could do it again especially if it was a means to an end.But a child? My stomach clenched, and I gripped the edge of the table, struggling to keep my breathing even. A panic attack would be the worst way to end this night.Maverick had no idea. No idea what he was really asking of me.“Iris…” he trailed off. “I know this is a lot to dump on you, and if you’re not okay with this, we can call it off. I promise.”I swallowed, my throat dry. “You—” My voice cracked, and I cleared my throat, forcing the words out.. “You need to get married and have a child? That’s the condition?”Maverick nodded, his gaze assessing my face

MAVERICK I never gambled. I’d never made reckless bets. I sure as hell had never waited for a ghost before.Yet, here I was. Sitting in the grand ballroom of the charity gala that had been organized by my father, surrounded by Seattle’s elite, my whiskey untouched as I stared occasionally at the door.Waiting for Iris.Call it wishful thinking, but when I sent a text to Iris three days ago, I’d hoped that she would show up. I took my phone out, opening up Iris’s chat. The last message was from me. The night after our dinner, I’d gotten hopeful when she said she would think about it. So I’d sent her a text:‘Charity gala, Sunday, 9pm. If you ever change your mind, you’ll find me there.’It was a long shot. I never took risks like that, but something about Iris Blake made me want to break my own rules. She was the best option for this. I had no other choice. She should have been here by now. Iris was supposed to want this as much as I wanted. She was supposed to crave revenge just lik

IRIS The flashing lights from the cameras should have scared me away, or at least made me nervous. But instead, I felt powerful. I wrapped my arms around Maverick’s neck, letting him deepen the kiss, letting him put on a show for the public. His hand slid to my waist. He was doing everything he could to make this seem real. But it wasn’t. It wasn’t real. And it didn't matter how much of a damn good kisser he was, this wasn’t real. He wasn’t mine. And I would love to keep it that way. Strictly professional.I’d deliberately refused to reply to Maverick’s text asking me to meet him here, deciding to just surprise him. Thinking of him anticipating my arrival and then getting disappointed made me laugh. The second I broke the kiss, I forced myself to stay calm. To stay in character. I felt a shiver run down my spine but I had no idea whether it was from the kiss, the adrenaline, or all the eyes that were on me.I really hoped it was from either of the last two options.Maverick’s breath

IRIS I made sure my expression didn't give anything away as I spoke. It had been two years since I last saw Eleanor. The woman who had smiled in my face pretending to be my friend, and then slept with my husband and took my place. My ex-husband.And now? She stood in front of me, wearing an expensive, too-tight, obvious dress, her hair curled to near perfection. Her sharp eyes drank me in, sizing me up like I was her competition.“Well, here I am, Eleanor,” I said, flashing her a fake grin. “Did you miss me?”Maverick squeezed my hand, silently asking if he should remove me from this situation, but I shook my head gently. This conversation was long due.Eleanor’s lips curled into something resembling a smirk. “Of course, it’s always a pleasure seeing you, Iris.”Liar, but I could play that game.I clapped my hands together, tilting my head. “And look at you, Eleanor,” I purred. “Enjoying your promotion from assistant to wife.”If I hadn't been paying attention, I wouldn’t have heard

IRIS I loved working at the hospital. It was always so cold. Not just in temperature, but in feeling. It always smelled like antiseptic and drugs. People were always waiting, hoping, breaking.I liked that. Being able to predict suffering.Because suffering was all I’d ever known.Standing at the nurse’s station, I flipped through a patient’s chart, forcing myself to focus. The buzzing sound from the fluorescent lights above was almost soothing, but not entirely.I needed something to ground me. Something that wasn’t the contract that I had signed last night.I still couldn’t believe that I had taken that big of a risk, but it was done. There was no going back. All I had to do was play the game and keep my daughter away from it.I hated that I’d sold myself to Maverick Sinclair, but to be honest, I didn't regret it.A loud gasp from behind me snapped me out of my thoughts.“Oh my God,” I heard one of the nurses whisper. “Are those for you?”I frowned, about to ask what she meant by t

IRIS Quentin Sinclair was just as I remembered him.Tall and handsome, dressed in a black tailored suit that screamed money and authority. His salt-and-pepper chin-length hair was tied in a low ponytail. Now that he was in front of me, I could see how much Maverick resembled him. His cold eyes regarded me, and I didn't miss the sneer on his lips.I lifted my chin, forcing myself to hold his gaze. “Mr. Sinclair,” I greeted coolly. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”“I missed you at the gala. Didn't get a chance to talk to you and I would love to do that right now,” he paused, looking around. “In private.”Holding back a sigh, I nodded, leading him through the hallways until we got to a secluded area. His bodyguards lurked around but they weren’t close enough to hear. His lips twitched as he looked at me.“Let’s not waste time with pleasantries, Ms. Blake,” his voice was leveled. Calm. “We both know why I’m here.”I crossed my arms. “Do we?”When I was still married to Sebastian, there w

MAVERICK I had come running to the hospital the moment I got word from my men that my father was there. Of course, he was. Of course, he was going to pull his usual manipulative bullshit on Iris.I expected nothing less than that. But what I hadn’t expected was Iris suggesting that we move in together before the wedding date. I knew her to an extent, and I’d thought that she would need her own space at least until the wedding. Not that I was complaining. It was actually a relief. But I wasn't about to make it easy on her.She was giving me nothing—just that same defiant look that had been there since the night I met her.“Why?” I asked, my voice even.Iris crossed her arms, shifting under my gaze. Her lower lip was jutted out in a slight pout.“B-because…” she stuttered, avoiding my eyes. “I mean we’re getting married anyway, so we… might as well move in together. No need to wait.”My gaze flicked to her mouth as she chewed on her lower lip distractedly. Iris made the most attractive

IRIS A ring. A fucking ring.I had known this was coming. Of course, I had. This was all part of the plan, the arrangement, the show we were putting on for the world to watch. But somehow, sitting in Maverick’s car as he drove us to one of the most exclusive jewelry stores in Seattle, I felt like I was walking into a trap. Or maybe, I was setting the trap myself.Maverick’s car was too quiet. Too still.I was still a bit shaken over Quentin’s visit. Quentin had already planted a seed of doubt. And I was fairly sure that he wasn’t the only one who had a feeling that it wasn’t a real marriage.Moving in with Maverick would change that, and—more importantly— also protect my daughter. Still, I hated this.“You’re quiet,” Maverick finally said, turning his head to glance at me.I hated how easily he played his part. Hated that he was so calm while the inside of my head was a fucking mess. And I was the one who had been married before. The irony was glaring.I kept facing forward even as

IRIS Maverick’s voice was ice. It wasn’t teasing like before, it was just cold. The kind of cold that burned me more than fire ever could. My fingers were still hooked in the elastic of my panties, but I froze when I saw the look in Maverick’s eyes.He wasn’t looking at me with wonder, like he often did whenever I was naked in front of him.He was looking at me with… nothing. There was nothing but darkness in his eyes. Cruel, cold darkness.Had I pushed him too far this time? His fingers tightened around my wrist for a moment before he let go.He didn’t want me to move, so I didn’t.Maverick pressed the vibrating gun to my skin again. “I think I’ve let you have your way for too long, Angel,” his voice rumbled. “But not anymore.”I whimpered, arching my back when he pressed the gun to the front of my panties. “Arghh…Maverick…”“Shhhh.” He pulled it away from me. “I need you to be still for me,” he whispered. “Otherwise, I’d have to start over.”“Okay,” I whispered airily, though I was

IRIS The moment I whispered yes, everything shifted.“Strip,” Maverick ordered, stepping away from me. His voice was raspy and cold, lower than it had ever been before. Every fiber of my body knew that it was a command, and not just a statement. But something inside me still chose to be defiant.“What?” I’d heard him. I was just taunting him.Maverick took a deep breath, lowering himself onto the bench next to him. “Don’t make me repeat myself, Angel. The more you disobey me, the longer your punishment will be. Don’t test me.”Punishment being the fact that he wasn’t going to let me come. My body shivered at that thought, all the heat rushing towards my core.Keeping my eyes on Maverick’s now hooded, dark ones, I reached for the hem of my top, pulling it over my head slowly. If I was going to be tortured, then there was no harm in torturing him back.Maverick’s jaw clenched as he watched me unclasp my bra. His eyes followed my every move, only glancing at my face once in a while. I

IRIS Curling my hands into fists, I heaved a sigh, deciding to go find him in his bedroom. We weren’t kids, we were fully grown adults that could talk things out with each other instead of keeping malice and avoiding each other.Okay. Okay.Maybe I just wanted to apologize for being a total bitch to him. In all fairness, it was the alcohol.‘The fuck it wasn’t,’ my inner voice scoffed at me.“Shut up,” I muttered.I stood outside Maverick’s door for a full minute before raising my hand to knock on it. “Maverick?”No answer.I knocked three more times, pushing the door open when I still didn't get a response. The lights were turned off. I doubted that he had even been in here. Even the bathroom lights were turned off.So where the hell had he disappeared to?Chewing on the inside of my cheek, I shut his door behind me as I exited his room. I also checked a couple of other rooms upstairs, all to no avail. He wasn’t upstairs. He wasn’t in the living room. And I didn’t think he’d walked

IRIS “She’s teething,” Megan said, dropping Amethyst onto the floor. “Explains why I haven’t had any sleep since Monday.”I grinned as I picked her up, taking her into my arms. “And she’s still the cutest thing ever,” I cooed. “Aren’t you, baby? I’m so proud of you.”Amethyst squealed, her tiny fists grabbing my hair as I peppered kisses along her chubby cheeks. Her eyes were grey and wide, her curls wild. I tightened my arms around her. Amethyst had no idea how much I needed this—her warmth, her laugh, the way her fingers curled around mine like I was her whole world. As much as I loved Megan for taking care of her, I couldn’t help feeling a little jealous of her. My daughter was growing attached to her in more ways than one. Megan had been there for her first words, her first steps…Made me wonder whether it really was a good idea to keep this from Maverick.“She’s really doing it,” Megan said softly. “She’s growing.”“Yeah, she is,” I replied, narrowing my eyes slightly. Megan had

MAVERICK My father had crossed the fucking line. The moment I dropped Chelsea and Iris off at the hospital, I headed straight for work, the only thing on my mind being Quentin fucking Sinclair. There were a number of things I really wanted to do to him, and one of such things involved bashing his head into the wall. Hard.I punched the elevator button, reigning in my anger the entire ride up. Or at least trying to.I had no idea what he was planning to do, but I was going to find out. Today. The boardroom was full when I arrived at the top floor. Through the glass doors, I could see a bunch of people in suits, sitting around the table, my brother included. Quentin stood at the head, his hands linked together in front of him.I was never even informed about a fucking meeting.I didn't bother knocking.I shoved the doors open and walked right in.Everyone turned, including Sebastian and Quentin, but my father didn't miss a beat. It was as though he'd been expecting me."Well, gentlemen

  • Dear Ex-Husband, Revenge is Mine!   CHAPTER SEVENTY-SIX: A HUGE PROBLEM

IRIS The second I opened my eyes, I regretted it. My head was pounding seriously. The light filtering through the curtains only made things worse, making me feel like my brain was getting stabbed. Hard. My tongue felt heavy, and my stomach… Oh my God. I stumbled across the room, barely making it to the bathroom in time to throw up the remnants of last night’s horrible choices. Everything fucking burned. My chest. My throat. My pride. Pressing my forehead against the cold toilet seat, I tried to get myself together. Tried so hard not to cry. And I succeeded, for the most part. By the time I was done brushing my teeth and washing my face, I still felt like hell. But at least it was a bit more bearable. I was starving. Hadn’t eaten a single thing since last night. Not before I drank the wine, and not after. Though I would’ve if not for her. Layla. I stepped out of my room into the main suite, ready to order room service, when I froze. Right there, in the middle of the coffee

IRIS The expression on Maverick’s face softened, and I felt my walls building up. “Iris—”The elevator dinged.I stepped out the second the doors opened, not waiting for him to follow. But I could feel him on my heels. Why the hell was I even feeling like this? Maverick and I weren’t a couple. Not in private, anyway.Deep down, I’d known that getting into a sexual relationship with him would ruin things. Make me get attached. Make me feel too much. But instead, I listened to my body. Not my mind.“I didn’t name the company after her,” Maverick said quietly. “Not like the way you think.”I scoffed. He really did think I was stupid. My hand on the door leading to my room, I started to twist the knob, but the next words that came out of Maverick’s mouth stopped me.“She died,” he said. “And I needed something that felt like purpose. I needed…” he trailed off, letting out a sharp breath.I tilted my head, unsure what I was hearing as I turned to face him. “What do you mean she died?”The

IRIS I didn’t know how long I’d been sitting at the bar. Twenty minutes? An hour? I’d drank enough wine to last me the rest of the week. Hell, maybe even two weeks.I was more than tipsy. I was drunk.Funny how I was only impulsively drinking so I could try to forget what had happened in the suite, but now, that was all I could think about.I groaned, pressing a hand to my forehead.Layla.She was beautiful in a way that made me feel plain. More elegant than someone like me could ever be. She had captured Maverick’s heart once upon a time. And why wouldn’t she?All I could think about was her hand on his chest, on his jaw. The way Maverick looked at her. As if she was his whole world. Well, I mean, she had been at some point. But what if she still was?I didn’t know her, had never heard of her, but I could feel it. Maverick had once loved this woman. It made me think about him saying he doesn’t date. Was it because of her?Why the hell was she here? How on earth did she have access

MAVERICK “I can’t do this anymore.”The words felt like gravel in my throat, but I said them anyway. Because it wasn’t a matter of how I felt, it was a matter of necessity. This had to be done. For her. For me. For both of us.Layla stood frozen in the middle of my room, arms tightly wrapped around herself like she was trying to physically stop herself from falling apart. Her eyes searched mine. Wide. Wet. Disbelieving.“You… you don’t mean that.”“I do,” I said, softer now, but more firm. “We’re not good for each other, Layla. We haven’t been for a while.”We were an unhealthy pair. A toxic pair. And with everything that was going on in my life. My father. My brother. My grandfather…It was all too much. I couldn’t be here anymore. I couldn’t do this. Her head shook violently, and she let out a sharp laugh. “You’re just mad. We had a fight. Couples fight—”“This isn’t about just a fight,” I cut in, running my hand through my hair as I paced around my dorm room. “It’s the lies. The w
