MAVERICK
Iris watched me expectantly, waiting for me to tell her the reason I wanted her to marry me in order to carry out my revenge plan. It was such an easy thing to do, yet I hesitated to speak. The emotional part of everything was a long-gone phase, and all I felt was just anger. Anger towards my brother, and my father. I would tell Iris all that she needed to know, but I wasn't about to delve into my past with someone I didn't know. Where do I start? “Did Sebastian ever tell you that he was next in line to be the CEO after my father stepped down?” She chewed on her bottom lip as she considered my question. Iris had no idea how attractive the little things she unconsciously did were. “Um, yeah. A few weeks before the divorce,” she looked away from me, but not before I saw the pained expression on her face and noticed the way her voice cracked at the word ‘divorce’. “He was excited about taking over from your father. He was always obsessed with being CEO, he just…” She turned back to face me. “Sorry, you were saying?” Sebastian being obsessed with becoming CEO made so much sense. He didn't deserve it. He never did. “Yeah, everyone expected Sebastian to take over from our father,” I paused. “Everyone but our grandfather.” I watched as Iris took a sip of her water and placed the cup back on the table. I had not had my drink, and I wasn't even planning to. Staying away from alcohol was a decision that I made a long time ago, and I wasn't about to back out now. Why did I order the whiskey, then? It was a front. And a punishment. “After he died, I moved to the Netherlands, because frankly, there was no point in being here if the only reason I was here had passed away.” The only person to ever care for me and protect me aside from my mother. “And as you can imagine, I never heard from them or contacted them again. Are you sure you don’t want anything to eat, Iris?” I asked. Iris quirked an eyebrow at me. “I’m fine, Maverick. And you’re stalling, okay? Don’t do that. Just talk.” I chuckled. “Says the most closed-off person I’ve ever met in my life.” Despite herself, she laughed. And if I said that it wasn’t the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard, I would be telling a blatant lie. I cursed silently. If Iris agreed to get married to me, I was going to have to keep my emotions in check. What we would be doing was purely transactional. Purely business. I hadn't even told her the most important thing yet. She was going to hate me after tonight. “Anyway, my friend and I founded our company, and that was the best decision we’ve made to date. And then I started keeping tabs on my father and brother. That—” “What do you do?” Iris suddenly cut me off. “I own a security company.” I left it at that. I didn't add that it was the most successful security company in all of Europe, or that I had started working on another branch here in Seattle. “Ok,” she said. I was expecting her to ask more questions, but when she didn't, I continued. “Two years ago was when I found out that they had been keeping things from me. Before my grandfather died, he wrote me into his will. I was set to become the next CEO after my father, and I was never told.” Iris’s eyes softened. “But it doesn't look like you care that much about the company. Why care about inheriting it, then?” She was right. “Under normal circumstances, I wouldn't have cared. If I’d been at the will reading, I probably would’ve just said ‘fuck it’ and left, because I wanted nothing to do with them. But these aren’t normal circumstances.” I held the glass in my hand, swirling the whiskey inside. “You have no idea what I went through as a child, Iris. No idea. I didn't grow up to be normal. Sebastian and I have never been close. So to have him steal the one thing… the most important thing left to me by my grandfather, it fucked me up. Believe me, I was fucking livid when I found out.” Our eyes locked, neither of us looking away. “The moment I found out, I was on the next flight to Seattle. The night we met, I was on my way to have a word with my grandfather’s lawyer.” Her eyes widened then, and her cheeks began to turn red. She was probably feeling guilty about it or thinking about the night that we had. I hoped it was the latter. “So, um. You plan to take over the company? Overthrow Sebastian or whatever?” “Yeah. I got my foot in last year. I’m the COO right now. Sebastian knows that I want to take what’s mine, but he’s quite confident I won’t be able to do it.” Iris’s brows scrunched up in confusion. “Why?” “Because I’m almost thirty,” I said simply. “That doesn’t make any sense, Maverick.” This was it. The moment of truth. The moment that would determine Iris’s agreement. I took a deep breath. “My grandfather’s will states that I am only to become the CEO if I get married before I turn thirty,” I paused. “And have a child.”IRIS I sat there, waiting for the punchline. Maybe he was messing with me, maybe he was just throwing in a light joke and I was supposed to laugh. But nothing about this felt funny to me. The silence between us was suffocating as Maverick’s grey eyes stayed locked on mine, unwavering. Expectant.Marriage was one thing I could put my foot in. I’d been married before, I could do it again especially if it was a means to an end.But a child? My stomach clenched, and I gripped the edge of the table, struggling to keep my breathing even. A panic attack would be the worst way to end this night.Maverick had no idea. No idea what he was really asking of me.“Iris…” he trailed off. “I know this is a lot to dump on you, and if you’re not okay with this, we can call it off. I promise.”I swallowed, my throat dry. “You—” My voice cracked, and I cleared my throat, forcing the words out.. “You need to get married and have a child? That’s the condition?”Maverick nodded, his gaze assessing my face
IRISIt was all I could do not to fall asleep behind the wheel as I drove home. It was a long day at the hospital and all I wanted to do was change out of the scrubs I was wearing, take a hot shower, and rest in my husband’s arms.I stepped my foot a bit harder against the gas pedal. I really hoped Sebastian was home. The past few days had been a rollercoaster, but I was ready to fix everything. He didn't need to apologize for the insults he’d rained on me a week ago. I deserved them. We’d been married for over two years and I couldn’t get pregnant. What kind of woman was I?I slowed down as I approached the parking garage, a feeling of excitement coursing through me despite my fatigue. I had good news for Seb. I’d officially obtained my nursing license.Dragging myself out of my car, I took out the box of cake I’d picked up at the bakery on my way over and headed towards the elevator. But as I approached, I saw a familiar figure walking towards me.“Malcolm?” I called out. Malcolm wa
MAVERICK I was seething.I never planned to come back to Seattle. Not this soon. But sometimes, certain things cannot be ignored. My father and brother had crossed the damn line.I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, my teeth aching from how hard my jaw was clenched. My phone buzzed in the cup holder, but I didn’t look at it. I knew it was a text from Dwayne, my business partner and best friend, and the only person I trusted in this godforsaken city. He probably wanted to know if I’d touched down yet.We hadn’t seen each other in a few years, mostly because I was taking care of things in the Netherlands, but partly because the two people I hated and distrusted the most lived here, and I’d be damned before I breathed in the same air as them. But I was back. I may have let all the other fuck ups and stunts they pulled roll off my back, but not this. I’d made my decision the moment I found out what my family had done. They’d thought they could take what was mine and get away with
IRIS “Oh,” I gasped when ‘John’s’ surprised gaze met mine.I forgot to take the towel with me to the bathroom, but in my defense, I didn't think he would just barge in without even knocking.“Shit,” he cursed, stepping back and gently shutting the door.I moved to the closet, taking out a white towel from the numerous towels that were in there, and then I wrapped myself with it and walked to the door, opening it without hesitation. His back was facing me, but he turned as I opened the door. “Sorry about that,” I said. My face felt hot all of a sudden.John’s eyes flickered down briefly before snapping back up to my face. If I didn't know any better, I would’ve thought he looked… affected. Though I wasn't sure whether it was from the embarrassment or something else.He cleared his throat. “I should be the one apologizing. I wasn’t thinking,” he breathed, handing me a pair of clothes. “Figured you might need something to wear.”I hesitated before reaching out to take them. My fingers b
IRIS (Two years later) “Where is it?” I groaned as I searched my carry-on for the umpteenth time on the verge of tears.I was exhausted. I had been up since dawn, triple-checking my bags, confirming my flight details, and making sure that I had everything necessary for my journey home. But now, as I stood in the middle of the Amsterdam airport. I could feel the frustration and irritation building slowly beneath my skin.Because my passport was gone. Fucking missing.I turned everything out of my suitcase and onto the floor, praying that maybe I’d lost it in my clothes or something. But it was no use. I’d checked a million times and it wasn’t in any of my bags.I cursed under my breath, feeling my heart begin to race as panic crept in. I’d already met the security officers, and they had directed me to the lost and found to see if anyone had turned it in, but no such luck.I had no idea where I had even dropped it or when I had last seen it. The authorities at the airport said there

Because all of a sudden, he remembered who I was, including the fake name I gave him that night. He stretched his hand out, giving my box of tampons back to me. In any other situation, I would’ve felt embarrassed, but I was too overwhelmed to feel any form of shyness.“I tried calling out to you but you were too fast,” he said, his voice exactly as smooth and deep as I remembered. “You dropped this.”Taking it from him, I swallowed. My nerves were all over the place. “I–um, thought you didn't remember who I was.”He smiled mischievously at me. “That’s ridiculous.”“But—”He cut me off. “I know,” he said with a slight shrug of his shoulders. “I may have just been kidding, which probably wasn’t the best route to take. You seem distressed. Are you alright?”I wasn’t going to talk about my problems with this man. “Um, yeah. I’m fine.”He pushed away from the wall, standing at his full height. Still as intimi
MAVERICK It didn't take long for me to find out what Mia’s actual name was. In only a matter of days, I’d found out her name, where she worked, and I’d also found out that she had been married to my brother. And that the night we slept together was the night of their divorce. I never forgot how broken she was that night. How undesirable Sebastian had made her feel that she didn't mind running into the arms of a stranger. And she was beautiful. So fucking beautiful. I assumed she didn't want to be found, so I’d given her that respect and kept my distance, and even though I felt tempted to check in sometimes, I resisted the urge. However, she never left my mind. IRIS I couldn’t have heard him right. I mean, there was no way in hell a man that I had known for all of one night was asking me to marry him. “What?” I tried to make my voice sharp but it came out as a whisper. Maverick leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. His dark hair fell over his brows and he brushed it back, smiling darkly. “You heard me.” A laugh burst from my mouth. This man was truly, definitely insane. “Are you on something?” I asked. “Tell me, what is it?” If I wasn't observing him so closely at that moment, I would not have noticed the way his jaw clenched and the dark look that crossed his face. It was gone before I could even register it. Did I hit a nerve? The air in the cabin was suffocating. I was in this space with a man I barely knew, who was clearly out of his mind. I wanted no part of this. “I’m not joking, Iris.” Calm down. Deep breaths, I told myself. Inhale, exhale, just breathe… I swallowed, searching his face for any sign that he was m

IRIS “I think you should accept his offer,” Megan blurted.I paused, a forkful of spaghetti halfway to my mouth. Slowly, I dropped it back onto the plate, taking my time to shoot her a glare.Either Megan was oblivious to my glare or she just didn’t care, but she didn't stop eating.“What?” She looked at me then, shrugging, her eyes slightly wide. “I think you should marry him—”“Megan…”“Hold up,” she cut me short. “I’m not done. He’s paying you what? A hundred million? I’m just saying, you can ask him to double it. Milk him for what he’s got. That is a lot of money, Iris.”“I’m not marrying my daughter’s father, Megan. And to think it’s all just for what? Revenge? This is a marriage we’re talking about. Marriage to my ex-husband’s ‘brother’. I want nothing to do with that family.”I told Maverick that I was going to think about it, which I had been doing in the last three days since I got back, weighing the pros and the cons. Because as much as I wanted revenge, I couldn't go on w
