Jocelyn’s POV
“Wake up, you lazy sloth,” Agnes's cold, unforgiving voice wafted into my ears as droplets of cold water trickled down my face. Squeezing my eyes open in sheer fear, I saw her hovering over me, a glass cup in her hand, and a look of disdain planted in her face. “G-Good morning, Madam Agnes,” I stuttered out, as I rushed out of bed. “Do you need something?” “Do I need something?” She mimicked then chuckled incredulously. “It’s seven in the morning and you're still sleeping like a log of wood. Just how lazy and uncouth are you? Did your mother train you at all?” “I'm sorry, ma'am,” I responded, suppressing the urge to cry. “I will go make breakfast now.” “Make breakfast for three,” Agnes sneered. “And put a bottle of champagne in ice. I am expecting a visitor and I don't want anything to go wrong.” “A visitor? Who?” I blurted out, without thinking and she shook her head in negation while eying me venomously. “That's the only thing you know how to do,” She mocked. “Putting your nose in other people's business. No wonder why your child died. Learn how to mind your business, okay?” Although a part of me wanted to give her a harsh retort, I nodded. “I'm sorry I asked.” “Arrant nonsense,” She huffed, and with that, she exited the room while I stood, shivering, the front of my old pyjamas wet. After my miscarriage, Eduardo moved out of our matrimonial bedroom because he couldn't bear sharing a bed with a careless witch like me. While other husbands would have held and comforted their grief-stricken wives who had just gone through a miscarriage, Eduardo had called me all sort of unprintable names. He even went on to host a company event the next day while I mourned my child alone and devastated at the hospital. Whether I wanted to admit it or not, a divorce had always been in the future of mine and Eduardo's marriage. How foolish was I to have ignored all the warnings because I wanted my happily ever after with Eduardo so bad? How utterly asinine could I have been to pay no mind to my mother's pleas for me to return home when she saw how emaciated I had become, during our last video call, which was about a year ago? I had ignored my mother to continue living this life of hell, thinking Eduardo and his mother would suddenly wake up one day to start caring for me. Truly, my stupidity had no limit. + Placing a bottle of champagne on a tray, I inhaled shakily before lifting it and heading into the dining room, where I beheld a heartbreaking sight. Eduardo was hugging a strange woman and whispering something into her ear. Whatever it was must have been funny as she laughed and playfully hit his chest. My heart shattered to tiny, irredeemable shards when the woman hooked her arms around his neck and he tucked her hair behind her ear. “What are you looking at, buffoon?” Agnes's voice drew me out of my reverie. “Nothing,” I whispered, blinking my tears away. “I'm sorry.” “Who is she?” The woman asked, and I raised my head to take a long look at her. She was tall and pretty with blonde hair that had been cropped into a bob. A pair of pearl earrings adorned her ear, which made her look even more elegant. Her nails were long and sharp and painted bright red. She was also clad in a black bandage dress that hugged her body, leaving very little to the imagination. I didn't need to put two and two together to realize that the woman was Eduardo's true love. It was obvious with how lovestruck he seemed while staring at her. “Ignore her,” Eduardo said, without looking in my direction. “She's just a maid.” So a maid was all I was to the only man I had ever loved in my life. But then again, that was the truth. I cooked, cleaned, watered Agnes's garden, hand washed both him and Agnes's clothes at least thrice a week, and did everything in that house. Even the food Agnes had lied about cooking was made by me. Repressing the urge to cry, I blinked my eyes fervently and clutched onto the empty tray. “Oh, okay,” She said, then pulled away from Eduardo to hug Agnes. “Thank you so much for making my favorite rotisserie chicken, mum. You are simply the best.” “You don't have to thank me, Sofia,” Agnes said. “But you are always welcome.” Sofia, even her name was pretty. In all honesty, she was a better match for Eduardo than I was. For one, she was perfect and had a pretty smile while I was just a plain, blind person. “Thanks, babe,” The woman smiled as Eduardo helped her onto a chair. “No problem, sweetheart,” He smiled back at her then pressed a kiss to her knuckles, further breaking my fragile heart. “Enjoy your meal,” I muttered, as the woman fed Eduardo a grape, while licking her lips sultrily. “Where do you think you are going? Have I told you to leave?” Eduardo snarled, taking me aback. “I-I'm sorry,” I stuttered out. “Wh-” “Zip it and come serve us the champagne,” He spat. “You are just too lazy and useless.” “Don't get mad at her, babe,” Sofia placated him, throwing a glare at me. “Maids can be so frustrating. They always want you to spell things out for them.” “I'm sorry,” I whispered again, as I poured the champagne into their wine goblets, while Agnes watched me like an owl. “Stupid thing,” She scoffed. “I can't wait for her to leave.” My hands shook as I made to give Sofia her champagne, causing some of it to pour on the table. “Are your hands noodles or what?” She spat, snatching the glass cup from me. Before I could respond, she flung the remaining champagne at me. “Just take your worthless self out of here before you ruin things even more!” Eduardo snapped, darting me a disdainful glare. “I'm sorry,” I apologized, and left the room before my tears could fall. I spent the remainder of that afternoon crying in my room and reminiscing on the good times of mine and Eduardo's marriage before he started avoiding me after the miscarriage. The only time that he ever came close to me was whenever he was drunk and horny for a hole to warm his cum. Hours later when Eduardo, Agnes, and Sofia left for heaven knows where, I signed the divorce agreement and kept it on the nightstand in Eduardo’s room. Then, I walked downstairs after changing out of my wine-stained outfit, holding my luggage. “Goodbye, Eduardo,” I whispered as tears rolled down my eyes. “Thanks for the memories. Both the good and bad ones.” With that, I made my way out of the house. I soon reached the bus stop and retracted my phone from my phone to call my mum. Earlier today, I bought a plane ticket to Australia. Caressing my fingers through my hair, I looked to my right and saw a truck speeding toward me. Panic seized the logical part of my brain, causing me to remain rooted to the road, instead of fleeing to safety. My entire life flashed before my eyes as the line finally clicked just before the truck flung me against a nearby tree and sped off. Somehow, my phone, which was tightly clutched in my hand, had survived the whole ordeal. I moaned in agony as an overpowering wave of excruciating pain seized my entire body. “Dear, are you okay? What happened?” My mum's worry-laden voice was the last thing I heard before darkness fogged my vision.Jocelyn’s POV I woke up to the sound of machines beeping next to me.As I winked an eye open, a tangy antiseptic smell infiltrated my line of smell, causing me to scrunch my nose in distaste for a moment. After a while, I squeezed my eyes open and squinted instantly as sunlight diffracted through the window panes, into my eyes.Looking around, I realized that I was in a hospital room, and also experiencing numbness from my waist down which made me put two and two together as I stared at my moderately big stomach.Melon was out.I managed a weak smile as I clasped my hands together before something clicked in my head.My baby wasn't with me.As I made to rip the IV off my wrist and go in search of a doctor, the door opened and my obstetrician, Dr Wineheart, walked in, clad in grey scrubs.“You are finally awake,” He said. “Welcome back to life.”“Thanks,” I replied. “Where's my baby?”Sure, I had managed to get over the trauma of losing a child the first and second time, but I knew I
Jocelyn’s POV “I’m seeing someone,” Ivy uttered, as she took her seat beside me, a simmering cup of ginger tea in her hold. “He's also a doctor. He was recently transferred here from Norway.”“Finally,” I squeaked, clapping my hands together in excitement.“I have to get over Brian somehow, don't I?” She shrugged then took a sip of tea.“Hold on, you are using the new guy as a rebound?” I asked. “Really, Ivy?”“Don't judge me,” Ivy sighed, throwing her hands in surrender. “In all honesty, he's not a rebound because I kind of like him too. He's funny, tall, and handsome.”For peace to reign, I decided against pushing the subject further and instead remain on the current topic which was the new guy.“So how and when did he ask you out?”“Three days ago after we finished a surgery together,” Ivy chuckled. “A romantic to the core, isn't he?”“I guess he is in a way,” I replied.“He told me he got an epiphany during the surgery and realized that life was too short to keep one's feelings h
Jocelyn’s POV As I flipped through the pages of a maternity book, a knock came on the door of the bedroom before Eduardo let himself in, a smile playing on his handsome face.“Hi, baby. How are you?” He asked, walking over to press a kiss to my lips and forehead.“Good,” I replied, rubbing my gargantuan belly. “The baby is kicking gently today which is quite surprising. If I didn't have an experience with pregnancy, I would have asked you to drive me to the hospital, so we could get her checked.”I was currently in the seventh month and last trimester of my pregnancy, and as much as I loved my unborn baby girl, I couldn't wait for it to come out.Last week, I had found out that I was having a girl via the surprise baby shower Amelia and Ivy had thrown me and I was very excited to meet my little baby girl. However, being cooped up at home for the past three months could be sickening and frustrating because I was always alone in the house.Three months ago during an appointment with my
Eduardo’s POV Leaning against the doorway of our bedroom, I observed Jocelyn as she laid, cocooned in the blanket, face scrunched up in displeasure and possible ache, which she wouldn't admit. She had been like that for the past five hours and it was currently ten in the morning.I had come home last night to meet Ivy having dinner with the kids and Jocelyn copoed up in bed, burning hot with a temperature. All my efforts to get her to go to the hospital had been in vain, as she had vehemently stated she was fine and didn't need to be assessed by a doctor.Right now, as I looked at her, I mentally admonished myself for listening to her last night, instead of doing a better job of persuading her to see a doctor.“That does it, baby. We are going to the hospital,” I said, and watched her try but fail to sit up.I was instantly at her side, propping a pillow behind her and covering her with the blanket.“Thanks, Ed,” She said then sneezed into the handkerchief in her hand. “I don't need
Jocelyn’s POV I winced as the back of my head tightened with an excruciating ache, stifling the urge to groan in pain.“The sales memo and the quarterly report were thoroughly reviewed and evaluated by me yesterday, so everything should be perfect,” The team leader of sales department, Micheal Gould, said into the microphone, aggravating my migraine.“Okay, that's good.’ I forced myself to say, balling my hands into fists and placing it on my lap.I couldn't help but wonder why I had such a bad headache that afternoon, as the voices in the conference room blurred, and the sound of my heart thumping filled my ears.My mouth was hot, my lips numb, and my body warm as the ache intensified.I had woken up hale and hearty today, excited for the start of a new work week, and mine and Eduardo's impending dinner that was supposed to happen later today. But given how I seemed to have fallen ill all of a sudden, I knew the dinner would likely not happen anymore. The mere thought of it was beyo
Eduardo’s POV “It's been less than a year since I left yet it feels like a decade has passed,” Jocelyn said, one hand out of the window and her eyes squeezed shut as the wind tousled her long, auburn hair.Even though she couldn't see it, I darted her a smirk before turning my attention to the road.We were currently in Australia for the week, as Henry and Olivia were currently on summer break.Jocelyn and I had decided to take them to Australia, mainly because we wanted to expose Olivia to the country and stuff.Due to the sick plan Nancy had pulled, she had been unable to spend time in Australia with her mother and sibling.Although that was in the past now, I couldn't help but feel vitriolic anger toward both Nancy and Sofia whenever I thought about it.But as Jocelyn had told me the other day, focusing on the bad things that happened in the past instead of being pleased and grateful with one's current situation, wasn't the right thing to do.I had Jocelyn and my wonderful childre
