Sophia’s POV.

My body was still racked with the after-haze of last night and could barely remember how I came into my room.

But more than anything, I knew my head was throbbing, pounding against itself so much so that it might just kick excruciating pain to the deepest corner of my brain, where I would mentally note every regretful decision since picking up the phone and calling Jack.

I lifted my hand to my forehead as if it would lessen the ache. Then my eyes wandered, and my heart almost leapt from its place into my mouth at the realization that I was not alone.

Alexander, my step father.

He sat there and stared at me with eyes of a predator and its prey, his body reclined lazily in the chair beside the bed.

Gasping, I threw the bedsheet over my head as if any part of it would somehow take away the reality of his presence in my room. "What...what are you doing here?" My voice came out panicked, breathless, altogether unsure of what I wanted from him.

Attention? Or did I wan

Sophia’s POV.Then she asked her favor. "I want you to do me a favor, sweetheart."I was inwardly groaning. The usual favor she would never tire of asking. "What is it?" Resignation showed in my voice more than curiosity. She managed a sad little smile that provoked a surge of pity witnesses in me. "I want you to be nice to Mira ... your father's girlfriend. Look, I know you haven't really been getting along, but she's important to him. And I don't want you to give him a hard time." Mother pleaded with me. I remained silent for a long moment, searching for the right words. But why should I sugarcoat sincerity? I do not like Mira at all!But I can’t say no to Mother.Especially now, when she'd worked so hard to get it all to work for us?"I guess I will try," I muttered after an eternity, looking down at my hands. It sounded terribly empty to me, but it was all I could say. I would try. That was all I could promise."Thank you, Sophia," she said, brushing her fingers lightly over my

Sophia's POVI woke up early the next morning; my head was still pounding but not as violently as the day before.Even though the early sunlight barely shone through the curtains, that quietness felt oddly comforting. The last few days had weighed heavy in my chest, and pressure would build with every minute that passed. I had to do something to try and make it right, or at least salvage some piece. And the first thing I wanted to do was to thank Jack but also plead with him to keep our night stand a secret.I rubbed my eyes and very slowly sat up in bed. My body was sore, but I didn't mind. It was somehow a reminder that I had been doing something, living even though it was reckless. I walked into the bathroom, hoping that some quick bathing would clear my head, but deep down, I understood that I was just running away from the constantly gnawing feeling of shame just behind. The warm water, even soothing at times, made me feel a little relief as I submerged myself and let the heat in

  • Deadly obsession    DESPERATION LETS IN

Sophia’s POV The morning light streamed into my room, but I had not been granted a revival just quite yet. I still had my mother softly knocking on the door. “Who is it?” I grunted in annoyance, unable to open my eyes due to the banging in my head. "Sophia? It’s breakfast time, dear," she called out from the other side. I rubbed my temples, forcing myself to get up, and whether I could make it to breakfast at that moment was the lesser of my concerns. I sighed as I threw the sheets aside, slipped off my bed to the floor, down to the bathroom, splashed cold water on my face, and trudged to meet my reflection. I barely even identified myself anymore. My face was pale; my eyes bloodshot, and my hair looking like an abandoned bird’s nest. I began to feel terribly guilty as I brushed the knots out of my hair. I wasn't ready for any of this at all... But I had to face it. After a quick shower , I reluctantly felt like dragging myself downstairs. Maybe food would help with my hang

Sophia's POV"I need your help."Alexander did not even blink; he continued to read, the pages being turned almost too loudly within that quiet room. After a few long moments, he finally raised his gaze to meet mine. His face was blank, his eyes were cold, but something I could not place flickered there, sending my stomach into knots."What is it?" he asked, that calm, measured tone of his grinding through my last nerves. I wanted him to feel the importance of this. I wanted him to understand how desperate I truly was."I- I am being blackmailed," I said, the words weighing like lead as they left my lips. "There is a tape. Of you. With a woman. I think the woman is me... I know the woman is me." The words came out in a rush, each syllable interrupted by sharp breaths. Once the words fell from my mouth, time seemed to freeze , yet Alexander appeared indifferent, matter of fact he looked bored.A brief flicker of recognition, an eyebrow raised, and then silence. Sophia's POVI was dressing in front of the mirror, while chaotic emotions swept over me. Alexander told me I had to dress. He promised there was this old friend of his we were going to meet-who could help us out with the blackmailer. But that blackmail thing was still hanging heavily on me. I couldn't shut my eyes without the vision of the video coming up.I slipped on a tight, dress-a navy blue so dark it accented the paleness of my skin. My makeup turned up shaky-around the mascara, I could hardly get anything on my lashes. There was too much pounding in my heart. The light knock had broken the fright."Miss Sophia? Master Alexander sent to ask if you are ready?" A shy maid had asked, still lingering in the doorway."Almost," I said bravely. After a few moments, I threw one final glance in the mirror, adjusting the fabric of my dress, and went through the door. As I stepped into the hallway, I saw, unmistakably, my mom in my room. She hung on her phone, her lips drawn in a frown.E

Sophia's POV"A cleaner," he said flatly. "From the club where you and Alexander had your affair."A cleaner?A cleaner blackmailing me?That brought a chill to my blood. In a split second, my mind was yelling at me for letting my guard down so bad that a mere cleaner had the nerve to threaten me.For a moment, an impression tinted with the dark color of the wait came upon me. I could feel Alexander gauging my reaction; ten sets of eyes would have hurt less than his cold, demeaning look. With that realization, I felt the walls of the room closing in on me, the air suddenly became suffocating and my palms became sweaty.I swallowed hard, trying to slow my breath, but my rage only intensified.I repeated, "A cleaner?" incredulous. I stared from James to Alexander, praying someone would come up with something better. But none did as Alexander's face remained the same, only changing when , his brows knitting together in shock as he turned to look at me."Are you satisfied?" he asked with

Sophia’s POVThe cold night air hit me like a slap in the face just as I stepped out from the restaurant. My emotions ran the gamut—confusion, anger, bitterness, and a hint of something else I had yet to name. The talk with James had unsettled me. He had sounded calm, cool, and collected, as if this were merely another ordinary problem to solve. Yet for me, this was a nightmare. It was a nightmare I could not awake from. And then Alexander had to make things worse.“You satisfied now?” he spoke, eyes betraying a mix of emotions I could not pluck an identity for. “I’ll make sure the cleaner doesn’t live to tell the story.”Was he serious? Did he kill whoever leaked his tape with my mother?Could it be that was why I had been unable to watch the tape?A shiver raced down my spine.“Gross! Why would I ever wanna watch mum’s tape!”I looked up at him now as we walked back to the car. Calmness appeared to envelop him. Not a trace of worry registered on his expression. Sophia’s POVI remained still, frozen in the doorway of my room, while I watched Alexander sitting on the edge of my bed. He was stiff, but his expression was no longer one of arrogance. For the first time, I saw something else in him: a hint of vulnerability, something unexpected. He did not look like someone who had kept me at an arm's length for so long. Just... uncertain. He began with a steady voice laced with something soft, almost regretful, as he uttered my name. “Sophia, I owe you an apology.”I blinked in astonishment. An apology from his lips? Now we were treading new waters, complete with foreign currents. I crossed my arms, not sure how to respond.“I’ve been… cold,” he said steadily but never-ending gaze with mine. “I know that. And for all the cruel things that I said to you, for ignoring you like I did, I’m sorry.” He broke eye contact, looking down to his hands for a second, almost as though gathering his thoughts to continue. “I just didn’t want to give you an openin

My breath caught in an unnatural pause when I beheld her presence. The reality of her presence defied my initial expectations. The woman before us appeared entirely different from the youthful seductive image tabloids crafted in their grainy misleading photo. She existed as an older woman whose grace manifested through silver streaks that ran through her impeccably styled dark hair. The eyes she possessed showed intelligence and discernment yet bore the burden of experience instead of the playful mischief I had once envisioned. She displayed the sophisticated grace of a self-made empress whose presence demanded immediate respect upon her entrance into any room.I swallowed hard my stomach twisting with guilt. In what ways did my actions reach such levels of foolishness?
