Sophia's POV.

The air betweenus thickened. It balanced with unspoken possibilities.

"I need to talk to you," I said, my own voice less

audible than I'd intended it to be. "Privately."

Those piercing blue eyes regarded me intently, searching for something in my expression. He clenched his jaw before inclining his head once. "Meet me in my library."

That was all; he turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, the heart pounding in my chest.

I exhaled, fingers curling into fists. What the devil was that? The manner in which he looked at me, the manner in which his very existence caused my mind to spin, was sufficient to make my head spin. And for a moment, I had wished to kiss him. What is wrong with me?

I brushed those sly thoughts away and turned sharply, entering my room. I entered and locked the door behind me, breathing deeply, attempting to relax. Focus, Sophia. Mira is the problem-not whatever the damn hell is occurring between you and Alexander.

They couldn’t.Blinded by rage, I clenched my fist so hard my knuckles turned white, I curled my fingers around my phone. "What did you just say?" I asked quietly. Mira seemed amused by my response as she slightly tilted her head. With a interjected breath, she flicked her hair back behind her ear and smiled at me. "I said, I want Alexander." The air was thick in the room.I blinked. "Are you joking?"Mira's smirk widened. "Am I?" My laugh was a short bark, filled with no humor while controlling the rage crashing inside me. Sophia's povI woke to the sound of my mom's voice as she stood over me; a mischievous smile on her face. The morning sun streaming through the window made lines around her eyes deeper than I had remembered, making her look older. "Good morning, sleepy head, time to get up. We have a big day ahead of us," she said, sounding bright yet a little nervous.I rubbed my eyes to get the sleep off. The bed creaked as I sat up, and I winced. Mornings sucked. "What's going on?" I mumbled, my voice all husky from sleeping.Mom was already at my closet. "We're going shopping, and then your father is coming over for lunch," she said, her voice muffled since she was going through my clothes.I threw off my covers and swung my legs over the side, my feet swinging in the air. "Ugh, do I have to?" I complained, running a hand through my tangled hair. "And why are we still pretending like everything is okay with Dad? Aren't you divorcing him?"My mom’s smile faltered for a second; a look of sadness in h

I yelled at the top of my voice,my eyes welling up with tears .Just as my mom was about to answer, her phone rang. She hesitated for a while before picking it up. "Hello?I could hear the voice of my father on the other end, and the guilty look on Mom's face slowly transformed into neutrality. "Hey, yeah, lunch is still on. What's up?"There was a pause, and then Dad said something that made Mom's eyebrows rise. "Oh, okay. Well, that's fine. Bring them along."My mother hung up and turned to me, a hint of a smile on her face. "Your dad is bringing some guests to lunch."I felt a surge of anger and betrayal. "Guests? What guests? His new girlfriend, I presume?"My mom's smile faltered, and she looked at me with a mixture of frustration and guilt. "Sophia, let's not assume anything, okay?"But by now I was beyond reason. Sophia's POVI stormed into my room, slamming the door behind me. What had just happened? Mom slaps me, and now she just sends me away? Really? The anger welled up inside me, and then it seemed like something broke inside me. I began breaking everything in sight. I smashed my vase, ripped my posters, and kicked my bed. I screamed and cried, but I did not care."How could she do this to me?" I yelled at the top of my voice. "How could she just slap me and not even apologize?"My room was a mess, and I didn't even bother cleaning it up. I didn't care. It seemed as if my whole world had come crumbling, and I didn't know what to do.Just as I was about to break something else, I remembered I was supposed to meet up with Emily at the club downtown. So quickly, I wiped my tears and began freshening up: applied some makeup to cover up the redness of my face. Sophia’s POV.The garden is still now except the gentle rustle of leaves swaying in the evening air. The smell of roses freshly watered hangs mixed with the even fainter whiff of lovely chlorine from the pool. This is the time when things ought to feel calm, but because I'm lying here facing Mira under fine moonlight, tension tightens between us like an invisible rope purposed to snap any second soon.I shouldn't have followed her out here. I should have turned a blind eye and gone straight to my room. But decency did not permit it, and now I am trapped within a conversation I never wanted to have.Mira tilts her head slightly, smirking at me so that my skin tingles. "What is happening between you and Alexander?" she asks, her voice light, almost playful, but I hear the edge beneath it.Like a slap in the face, the question takes my breath away. For a second, I can only stare at her, my mind tying itself in knots, trying to think about the audacity of her words. Then I let out an amus

I usher my father and Mira through the grand entry of Alexander's mansion, a precarious mixture of emotions pounding in my heart with every passage. The house exudes warmth, and a delicious aroma fills the air. Upon stepping inside, we hear the faint murmur of voices drifting from the kitchen. My mom.Standing at the kitchen island, she is chopping vegetables with precision and grace as Alexander leans against the counter, a look of amusement on his face while peeling an apple with the sleeves of his immaculate white shirt rolled up to his elbows. The sight of them together makes my stomach clench. So domestic. So...real.And I hate it.As soon as my mom sees the two gently entering—my father and Mira—my mom puts the knife down, wipes her hands with a kitchen towel, and walks toward my father, wearing a heartfelt smile.“Daniel,” she says first to my father, steady and calm, before she turns to Mira. “Mira. Sophia's POVHeavy clouds loomed over me for two weeks after Alexander's apology, and after some time, things began feeling, I suppose, quite normal, or as normal as they could under the circumstances. My mother looked happier than I had ever seen her; she was in a frenzy over the wedding preparations. The perfect dress was found; the mere thought of marrying Alexander had re-energized her spirit. What I felt for Alexander was kept hidden and buried so deep until no one could see it; after all, he was going to be my stepdad, and there could be no other room. And so I sat and watched as their relationship unfolded, pretending that all was well when every single second spent with Alexander was tearing at the fine threads of my private little facade. So here I was, waiting for him and my mother to be done with the board meeting in his office. The meeting had been called by Alexander to discuss the latest marketing and advertising alliance between his own company and that of my mother.Th

Sophia’s POVI remained still, frozen in the doorway of my room, while I watched Alexander sitting on the edge of my bed. He was stiff, but his expression was no longer one of arrogance. For the first time, I saw something else in him: a hint of vulnerability, something unexpected. He did not look like someone who had kept me at an arm's length for so long. Just... uncertain. He began with a steady voice laced with something soft, almost regretful, as he uttered my name. “Sophia, I owe you an apology.”I blinked in astonishment. An apology from his lips? Now we were treading new waters, complete with foreign currents. I crossed my arms, not sure how to respond.“I’ve been… cold,” he said steadily but never-ending gaze with mine. “I know that. And for all the cruel things that I said to you, for ignoring you like I did, I’m sorry.” He broke eye contact, looking down to his hands for a second, almost as though gathering his thoughts to continue. “I just didn’t want to give you an openin

Sophia’s POVThe cold night air hit me like a slap in the face just as I stepped out from the restaurant. My emotions ran the gamut—confusion, anger, bitterness, and a hint of something else I had yet to name. The talk with James had unsettled me. He had sounded calm, cool, and collected, as if this were merely another ordinary problem to solve. Yet for me, this was a nightmare. It was a nightmare I could not awake from. And then Alexander had to make things worse.“You satisfied now?” he spoke, eyes betraying a mix of emotions I could not pluck an identity for. “I’ll make sure the cleaner doesn’t live to tell the story.”Was he serious? Did he kill whoever leaked his tape with my mother?Could it be that was why I had been unable to watch the tape?A shiver raced down my spine.“Gross! Why would I ever wanna watch mum’s tape!”I looked up at him now as we walked back to the car. Calmness appeared to envelop him. Not a trace of worry registered on his expression. In a split second, my mind was yelling at me for letting my guard down so bad that a mere cleaner had the nerve to threaten me.For a moment, an impression tinted with the dark color of the wait came upon me. I could feel Alexander gauging my reaction; ten sets of eyes would have hurt less than his cold, demeaning look. With that realization, I felt the walls of the room closing in on me, the air suddenly became suffocating and my palms became sweaty.I swallowed hard, trying to slow my breath, but my rage only intensified.I repeated, "A cleaner?" incredulous. I stared from James to Alexander, praying someone would come up with something better. But none did as Alexander's face remained the same, only changing when , his brows knitting together in shock as he turned to look at me."Are you satisfied?" he asked with
