RHETT

Dawn came, and I sat on the folded couch rubbing some cream onto my feet. A welcomed gift, that Nyctimus’ mate had sent to our room last night. The ointment was already doing its job and soothing my feet. This was the second application I was putting on and already my sore and blistered feet were beginning to heal.

“We will take the quickest route to MacTire and from there we will travel to Mir,” I say as Finn and Mason rise and stretch. “Travis will have transportation for us once we hit the border.” I pull my socks and then my boots on. Taking my time to lace them up.

We had been gone for five days already. That only gave us another week to come back with the dagger.

Morgan wanted to perform the ritual under the blood moon. That was only nine nights away.

The familiar feeling of pent-up frustration mixed with anxiety began to creep over me. My hand shook as I finished tying my boots. Nine nights only. I could only think about what I was tasked to do. And that was not retri

RHETT Up the mountain and around the side we had climbed. Our eyes were ever watchful for those birds in case they came back for a second go. “This isn’t right.” Mason stops, looking at the map we had been given. “What’s not, right?” I asked him, pulling up next to the werecat. He turns the map in his hands from front to back then back to front. Then rotates it clockwise like he is desperately trying to figure something out. “This,” He says shoving the map in my hand. “It doesn't make sense.” I peer at it. Looking at the lines that were drawn for us. I frown, licking my lips as I study the piece of paper. “You're right. It doesn’t make sense.” I shake my head. “You can't read a fucking map now.” Finn snatches it from my hands and takes a moment to study it. Shoving it back at Mason roughly the werebear turns to look at the rocky face of the mountain we were trekking over. With hands on his hips and deep lines across his forehead, the werebear stares intently. Finally, after a f

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 20 – The Light of Leneve

RHETT The sweet, now familiar, scent of a woodsy maple filled my nostrils. Assaulting my senses and causing me to falter. Sharp pointed teeth dug into my lightly fur-covered skin. Tearing through to the bone. I grunted and growled in pain. The bite burned and I desperately and angrily began stabbing at the creature who had latched on to me violently. “Mother fucker, take that!” I yelled when its grip on me finally loosened, and it fell away. Without warning or cause the creature suddenly backed off, slinking back into the darkness. I could still feel their presence, hear their hissing screeches, but they had retreated as if they feared something. Bright and blinding light illuminated the cavern. The creatures flinched and retreated further. Quiet yet harshly a female voice came from the source of the light. She spoke a strange language I didn’t understand. Something inside me stirred. That former feeling of excitement once again reared up making the hairs on my body tingle. The sc

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 21 – Return to Home

RHETT Two vehicles came to collect us in under an hour and transported us through the vast territory of MacTire and up to the castle entrance. The grey walls and medieval style of the castle gave me a sense of solace. I had truly missed this place. Travis and Josiah stood there waiting to greet us and welcome me home. Stepping out of the vehicle, my hands once again begin to shake until I lay eyes on Leneve, the sight of her calms me somewhat. Still, my mind and heart are at war again as my gaze turns to Travis. I couldn’t lie to him. Keeping a secret that involved him was as good as lying. Especially one this prominent. “It's been months old man,” Josiah a werebear, and the beta of MacTire as well as my closest friend, greets me, clapping me on the shoulder and pulling me in for a quick hug. He quickly releases me and greets Mason then Finn. Josiah had been friends with Mason since they were cubs. Their friendship spanned long before I had ever come on the scene. The two had grown

RHETT Sleep evaded me. It usually did. They say when you can’t sleep there’s too much on your mind. Well, there was a fuck ton on my mind. That’s for sure. I should be used to it by now. I lay in my bed contemplating my next move. We would spend the day here in MacTire then leave for Mir the next morning. Of everything that was filtering through my brain I began to debate whether having the Lycans come with us was going to be a hindrance or beneficial. Though Leneve was easy on the eyes, to say the least, she could be trouble. On the other hand, she proved useful when walking through the mountain and if it wasn’t for her, I could be dead by now. Leneve must have some powerful skills as a blood alchemist. Not only did she pull the poison from my body but whatever witchcraft she used managed to heal my feet in record time. Even faster than if I let my body heal them in their own time. Still, I didn’t trust the Lycans. My gut instinct was telling me there was something not quite co

RHETTI didn’t go back to sleep. Didn’t even bother trying. Instead, I went for a run, pulling on the strength of the knight to give me inhuman speed.Strangely enough, I felt stronger. Faster. More aware of my surroundings. Each sense heightened more than usual. I felt like a wolf. Or at least what I imagined my friends felt like when they shifted and ran through the woods. It was invigorating, to say the least, and I only stopped when I reached one of the outposts. I took a seat on the bench outside the little hut. There was no guard here tonight, that or he was patrolling. I pulled a lighter and my smokes from my pants pocket and lit it. Taking a deep satisfying drag of the tobacco stick. And watched as the smoke I blew out lifted into the air and dissipated. With the next drag, I made smoke rings.“You’re getting stronger Rhett.” I was so absorbed in watching the smoke rise and the tranquility of the mountain that I hadn’t even heard Travis sneak up on me. That was concerning. “I

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 24 – The Concrete Jungle

RHETT It took us a little over a day and a half to reach the border of Mir and another half day to drive over the uneven terrain until we couldn’t take the vehicles any further due to how rocky and cut-up the ground was. We had taken two vehicles otherwise it would have been a tight squeeze with the six of us. I had somehow managed to convince Finn to drive with the Lycans. I wasn’t sure I could sit in an enclosed space with Leneve’s scent suffocating me. There was no way I would have been able to concentrate or think. She did that – fogged my brain. I knew why. She had told me, but I didn’t want to go down that road again. Once was enough and it’s not as if having a mate panned out for me before. No thank you. No matter how beautiful and tempting I was over all that shit. Mason brings the car to a stop. We step and look at the scenery before us. A low whistle comes from Finn as he comes to stand next to us. “In all my travels I have never seen anything like that before.” He says

RHETT I see just what Mason was yelling about. Leneve lay in my arms as the others fought off the demon dogs. The nightmare horses amazingly had backed off but not too far. The creature that came from the shadows I now recognize as Senko’s children – Changelings. They jump and attack every spiked and ravenous hellhound they can sink their teeth into. With long claw-like nails, pale grey skin, mustard-colored eyes, and sharp little pointy teeth they move through the air like creatures of the night, sinking their tiny fangs into the hounds, killing them instantly. Finn, Mason, and the twin Lycans together, chop down as many as they can until the demon dog’s numbers deplete and they retreat. Running with whimpers as the Changelings chase them off. We all stand and watch, wondering what our next move is. Wondering what their next move is. Out of nowhere a large silver net with sparks of currents traveling through it is thrown over Finn. He roars out in pain and anger, violently tryin

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 26 – Mothers Magic

LENEVE Pain. Immense and intense pain gripped me as the pale male took me away from Rhett’s warmth. I wasn’t sure if it was the injury or that I had felt fine because I was in my mate's arms. I knew the dark horse's horn had pierced me good and deep. It was my own fault, but I couldn’t let Rhett get injured and I couldn’t let him kill the beast. I felt its pain and sorrow and when I touched her, I couldn’t let another one be killed. They weren't monsters at all. Not like the demon dogs. They were souls that had been trapped, ripped from their realm, and now caught in ours. A pure creature that had been turned into something dark and demonic. They were lost and corrupted souls. Innocence twisted and molded into something else. I could feel their purity underneath the shroud of darkness. I could see and feel their pain. The black beauty of a beast whispered to my mind - connected with me when my hand met her muzzle. She told me they wanted to be free. To be free of the underworld go

Chapter 1 – Through New Eyes LAMIA The night of the blood moon Seneca finally quieted down only when there was quiet. She slept peacefully in my arms as I stood at the window looking out over the rolling landscape of MacTire. I felt indifferent staring at the dark mountains lit only by the glow of the moon and the sparkle of the stars. A night sky I had dreamed of seeing once more. Now I was gazing upon it, it felt strange. Different and new. It wasn’t how I remembered it. It was more beautiful than I remembered. The soft clicking of boots coming down the hall reached my ears. I didn’t bother to turn wh

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 53 – The Wolf Who Is Not

RHETT Two days after the Blood Moon News of the return of King Kellen and Queen Lamia spread quickly. The realm rejoiced and for two nights MacTire celebrated along with other kingdoms and packs. The realm was renewed with the hope that we would be saved from the underworld god's wrath. I wish I could share the excitement. Maybe I would if I didn’t know any better. Reports said Andora burned day and night as the dark army swept through the country. Tobias had relayed that Aodh’s armies had reached the borders of Bhakhil and they were preparing to fight on the front lines any day now. Sources told us another platoon of soldiers had reached the shores of Batsia the night Lamia and Kellen returned. I was in the midst of preparing the INE to move out as soon as possible to try and cut off the army before they crossed through Lewe or Mir and reached the kingdoms they bordered. It was time for the Changelings to shine. I wasn’t sure if they were ready or not, though I don’t think any o

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 52 – The Return of the Queen

LENEVE Alpha Travis lay on the ground. Oliver was barking orders at Beta Mike to help him, Who didn’t care to be talked to by the once rogue, but came to the Alpha’s side anyway. Rhett stood in horror as he watched Mike conjure sparks of magic and attempt to restart the Alpha’s heart. In the midst of everything happening two figures appeared on the otherised of the hole between realms. Tawny cried out upon seeing the lost queen and king. Morgan and Hunji didn’t know where to look. The rest, including myself, stood with mouths gaping opening as the most beautiful creature crossed the barrier. I fell to my knees as recognition came over me. The deep green eyes of the mortal goddess looked upon me. The queen of shifters had returned. The male next to her stood tall and intimidating. A scar marred his face but it did not detract from the incredible blue of his eyes. The child in the queen's arms began to cry. Her sobs became louder and turned into screams. Her little hands covered her

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 51 – Chasm Under the Blood Moon

RHETT I walk with Leneve, as slowly as we can, back downstairs and through to the back of the castle where a set of double doors leads to the gardens. My breath hitches, and my hands begin to shake when I see the gathering of all the major players including Travis who stands in the middle of the group with Mathias. I run one hand down my pants, wiping off the clamminess that gathers on my palm. I try to release Leneve's hand to wipe that one but her little fingers are wound tight around mine. I look down at the small Lycan witch who offers me a reassuring smile. She doesn’t need words, I can see in her eyes what she says. Telling me to do what feels right and that she is by my side no matter what. She stands with me, not behind or in front but by my side no matter what happens. It’s a comfort and reassurance that I didn’t know I needed. One that helped when I saw the watchful eyes of those who expected me to perform an act I was not keen on performing. “So how's this going to go

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 50 - Tension and Intent

RHETT Like a black cloud tension hung in the air. MacTire palace grounds and its people were eerily and unusually quiet than normal. The atmosphere was thick with a forlorn vibe that passed from one shifter to another. It was no longer a secret what was going to happen once the moon rose tonight. Whispers could be heard, the warriors gossiped, and the palace keepers mumbled protests under their breath. No one was happy about the deed I was meant to perform tonight. Least of all me. I thought I could keep my mind off the pending events by ignoring them. It had worked up until now. “Damn, I bet you are the most hated shifter in MacTire right now,” Mason says with a mocking tone. I shoot him an annoyed glance as we make our way to the training grounds. I thought maybe some light sparing would keep my mind focused on something other than stabbing my best friend. “He probably is.” My smile is weak as Tawny struts across the field in our direction. “I mean shit, Travis is loved by every

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 49 – Pack of Hunters

RHETT My hand gently splays across Leneve’s naked body, coming to rest on the flat of her stomach. The tips of my fingers flex where a child, my child, grows inside her. By any nature’s law, it would be too soon to know if she was indeed pregnant. However, I had learned not to question Morgan’s knowledge over the years, so I knew it was true. Leneve would bear our child and this child would grow up with both of its parents. They would know love unconditionally and they would have a sister who I had no doubt would spoil their sibling. In the exact way, I looked after Ria, this child would have an elder sister who would do the same. “Untie me, Rhett.” “Not yet,” I mumble to Leneve, my thoughts still on the life we created. I had made good on my promise. Leneve was still bound to my bed, a beautiful mess lying in a puddle of her own mess. I had made her shake and shudder, her body convulsing with orgasm after orgasm until it was me who couldn’t stand to hear her beg. Until I gave in a

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 48 – A New Stone

RHETT I spent the rest of the morning with Leneve and Angelica, watching as they played and laughed. So many new feelings were surfacing, and I hoped this would be a new normal I would be navigating in the near future. Two weeks ago, if someone had told me that I was Lycan, not half-wolf and there was a beast hidden inside me. I wouldn’t have believed them. If someone had told me I would meet a second chance mate, one I didn’t want, and one I would end up falling for more with each passing day; I would have laughed and told them to take a hike. Yet here I sat on the damp grass watching the two females who held my heart play chase. Leneve was genuine with her reactions; she wore her heart on her sleeve, and I’ve noticed she doesn’t hide her emotions well. So, the way her face lit up when Angelica smiled, made me smile. I caught myself as my lips curled up and my changing expression froze. I can’t remember the last time I smiled. The last time I enjoyed a moment in the day. Minus whe

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 47 – The Details

LENEVE The two young pups were taken from the room by an older female werebear, leaving the grownups to sit and talk. Platters of food were brought to the table along with juice and water. My surrounding company began to pile their plates high, mates making up plates for their females. In our Clan, it was every Lycan for themselves. I can’t remember once when my father fed my mother, never mind making up a plate for her. She would probably slap it out of his hand thinking it was poisoned if he did. “You need to eat,” Rhett whispers in my ear, grabbing my folded hands beneath the table. “I lost my appetite.” I lie. A low unhappy growl emanates from Rhett. I turn my head to look at him, only to see those green eyes staring at me intensely. The look sets off a tingling sensation throughout my body, remembering the way he looked at me last night as he made love to me. “Fine.” I concede when he doesn’t let up and reach for the tongues to grab some bacon. I thought it was going to be a

  • Dawn of the Hunters   Chapter 46 – A Circle of Magic

RHETT “The blood moon is in two days.” I give Travis a painful look and raise my sword, ready to spar again. “Don’t remind me,” I say, twisting to the side as he plunges his weapon towards me. I spin, knocking his back with my shoulder. “Rhett, it must be done.” Travis turns with a sweeping motion, his leg catching mine. I fall to the floor, dust licking the air from the heaviness of my body. “How are you okay with what I’m meant to do?” I stand back up dropping my guard because I don’t feel like sparring anymore. “Seriously, I can’t do it. There is no way I can stab you in the heart.” “I rather it be you than anyone else.” He tells me honestly, now dropping his sword to his side. “Well, that’s the catch. No one else can hold the dagger. So, if I don’t, no one will.” Well, no one but Travis, my thoughts take me back to the way he easily held the dagger, unlike Oliver. It sounds so good in my head. If I refused what was said to be my destiny, then there’s no way it could happen.
