She spent the next few minutes telling her best friend about the dreamy man that shook her world the night before, leaving out the intimate details of their kiss.
Their conversation was cut short by her phone vibrating from her bedroom.
Her body acted on its own as she jumped from the chair and ran to collect it.
Juliet felt embarrassed when she picked up her phone, and it was only her boss at the local paper.
He wanted to check in on the article they contracted her to write about the opening of that new restaurant. She was getting fewer jobs each month, and she worried that she would soon need to find additional work.
It was a frustrating but enjoyable profession, and she got to make her own hours.
The problem was finding enough work to do in those hours to pay the bills. As companies grew, the amount of freelance work diminished, and they now had a full-time, in-office team typing up their articles and blog entries.
Juliet grabbed her laptop before she solemnly walked back to the kitchen. She thought about Natalie and how hard she worked at her job.
Natalie was a mortgage banker for a large company, pulling fifty-five to sixty-five hour work weeks. Even on her days off, like today, Juliet knew at some point Natalie was going to be on her phone or laptop as she communicated with clients who had just made an offer on their future home. It looked exhausting and sounded miserable. She knew Natalie loved the fast-paced work, and she definitely loved her commission checks, but it was not something Juliet wanted to do even though Natalie had been trying to convince her to apply so they could work together.
She loved the freedom and autonomy that came with writing and could see it as her future career.
As she approached the kitchen island again, she rolled her eyes at the smirk on her best friend's face.
"Moving that fast, I can't help but feel like this date wasn't as innocent as you claim." Natalie briefly glanced down at the bubbling pancake batter and slid the spatula underneath to flip it. "Got something you want to share?"
At this rate, Juliet was sure her cheeks would never stop being red as she opened her computer to hide behind the screen. “He was a perfect gentleman.”
Natalie huffed in disbelief, and Juliet could feel her gaze burning a hole into the side of her head. "What are your plans for today? Want to go see that new movie?"
Juliet was relieved when Natalie changed the subject but knew her response would make her circle back.
"I can't. I have to finish this article today before I meet Matthew for lunch. Deadline's tomorrow." She started to pull up the notes from her interview with the restaurant owner and got to work typing. Natalie gestured a plate of pancakes towards Juliet, and she happily accepted as her roommate began to cook a second batch.
Her fingers flew across the keyboard as she worked, only to stop every so often when she wanted to grab a bite of her breakfast. Juliet jumped when her phone vibrated again, and Natalie slammed her hand down on the counter simultaneously. She was torn between addressing her friend’s outburst and looking at her phone.
Her lips parted, and she sighed as she turned to stare at Natalie. “Yes?” Juliet asked, her attitude pouring out of the word as she met Natalie’s amused stare.
"You got down and dirty with your mystery man on the first date, didn't you?" Loud laughter filled the room as her roommate leaned over the island and placed her plate in the sink.
Juliet watched as Natalie stood from her seat and went to her room. Her head turned over her shoulder, and she gave Juliet a knowing look.
"He was a perfect gentleman," Natalie mimicked with her voice raised an octave, and Juliet laughed as the bedroom door closed behind her.
As soon as she heard the shower turn on, Juliet launched forward for her phone.
Matthew: Good Morning, Beautiful. I hope I’m not waking you.
She felt giddy as she read his message but rolled her eyes at the thought of sleeping in so late.
Even having had gone to bed after two in the morning, she knew there would be no way for her to sleep in any longer than she already had. Her body was used to getting up early.
Each day, she would sit down on her patio with a warm cup of coffee and write as the sun rose, while the world still had that peaceful feel to it.
Juliet: Good Morning, Handsome. I’m up. How did you sleep? Her fingers returned to her keyboard as she put her phone down and mindlessly continued her work on the article.
Her mind drifted further away with each keystroke, and she couldn't help but wonder where he slept. Were there cotton or silk sheets wrapped around him? Was he still in bed now or had he gone to the gym?
He looked like the type to work out everyday.
Matthew: Not as good as I would have if you had been next to me, but I'll live. Send me your address. I'm picking you up for our date at noon.
Juliet hadn’t been on a date where the man picked her up in two years. They usually just met at the location since they didn’t know each other.
It went against everything in her being to send back her address, but she felt deep down that he was safe and trustworthy.
So she did, with the excitement that came from the knowledge that he was going to kiss her again and again.
Things as so sweet!!! It would be a ..... shame if he was keeping something big from her...
Juliet was ready hours before Matthew arrived. She had attempted to work but kept getting lost in thoughts of the man she would spend the rest of the day with. He was a mystery to her, a puzzle. She knew the man behind the phone but did not know the man in the flesh. In a way, it almost felt as if they were two different people, and she wanted to know everything she could about the real Matthew. Her article had been written and sent to her contact at the paper just moments before she heard a knock at the
It felt as though a bucket of ice water had been thrown over her as she heard her roommate's voice. Faster than she thought possible, Matthew dropped his hand to his side, grabbing at the air as he turned around to face Natalie. After looking her over once, he turned back to Juliet and brushed her hair back into place. She grabbed his outstretched hand as he pulled her back onto the sidewalk only a foot away.Juliet knew she would blush, but she had no idea how red she had truly become under her best friend's stare. She looked up in time to see Natalie's brown eyes as they moved to trail up and down Matthew's body. "Are you going to introduce us, or are you still trying to catch your breath?" Natalie was the kind of woman that Juliet admired for her confidence. She would say or do anything that came to her mind and was never ashamed of it. It was only noon, and she had already been enjoying her day off with a midday drink, which reflected in the darkness of her lips. As she stood in
It took just under twenty minutes to reach the restaurant.Juliet didn't notice. She was doing her best not to squirm from the feeling his hand sent through her. She had been tempted to grab it the entire ride, to interlace her fingers with his. To do anything that would get her mind off of him touching her like that so she could think clearly, but as the rough pad of his thumb moved back and forth against her leg, she was lost, with no sense of time or direction. She felt the sensation run up her thigh, and she briefly wished he would pull over so they could continue what he had started at her apartment building. He was a perfect gentleman. She thought bitterly when his hand remained in its place. Juliet felt silly for thinking that when she had only known him in person for less than twenty-four hours. It was unusual that she felt this way for someone after only one date. Normally, she didn't want anything more than to hold hands or kiss until she got to know them better. She was
His hazel eyes were primarily grey in this lighting, and she liked the way that they stood out against his black button-up shirt. She watched as his eyes scanned the room slowly before they found their way back down to the menu.A short, round woman rushed to the table and set down two glasses of water with straws. Her dark hair was tied back in a clean bun, and she pulled out her notepad from the black apron wrapped around her light blue uniform. "Hi, I'm Dawn. I'll be your server today. Can I get you started with something to drink?" Her brown eyes flicked from Matthew to Juliet with a kind smile."I'm okay with just water, thank you," Juliet said, and both women turned to look at Matthew. She didn't want to be an expensive date, especially after he paid for all of their drinks at the bar last night."I'll take lemonade and a strawberry milkshake for her, please." He said as he sent a smile to Juliet. The woman nodded in response."Would you like a few more minutes, or are you read
There was a tense silence between the two of them as he let out a deep breath. "I'm licensed to carry. I don't like traveling without it, and I just got used to having it with me at all times." His voice was lower as his eyes briefly flickered to the rest of the dining area before they fell back on her. The calm demeanor he put on was good, and she had to give him credit for his acting skills, but she could see right past his nonchalant façade. It was a favorite pastime of hers, watching people. She studied their body language, read their tones or words, and eavesdropped on their personal conversations. She would frequently sit in a public place and focus on the strangers around her, trying to come up with her next story, their story. She didn't find it hard to see the slight twitch of one's lower lip when they were lying or the direct stare they made as they spoke with minimal blinking. One could say that she was trained in reading people a
"Really? I mean, that would be great, but are you sure? We can do anything that you want to." It didn't take much convincing for her to get him to drive to the range. He knew exactly where to go without directions, and she had the feeling that he was a frequent visitor to the establishment. The man behind the counter was a couple of years younger than her, at least in his early twenties. He gestured dramatically to the weapons in the display case before him with a large grin. "Good evening, what can I get for you today?" Juliet looked down at the selection as Matthew came up behind her to place his empty hand on her lower back. He held the ankle holster he had taken off in his other hand before entering the building. The signs on the front door had politely asked for all weapons to be visible and in holsters or cases.Juliet didn't hear Matthew
It was an afternoon full of stolen kisses after they left the shooting range to head to the beach. They explored the walkway that ran parallel to the water, passing by the small mom-and-pop shops that littered the walkway as they got lost in conversation. It wasn't until the sun started to descend behind the trees that Juliet looked around and found they were several blocks from where he had parked the car.The pull on her hand made her look over at Matthew as he walked towards a small restaurant. She coul
A mocking grin was on his face as he raised his voice to ask the last question. When the couple next to them turned again to stare at her openly, Juliet was sure her face went from pink to red. "No." She said shortly, sending a glare his way. "I have no fetishes, and I'm not married if you wanted to know." He tightened her hand on hers before he pulled away to take a sip of his wine. For a man so masculine and rugged, she was amazed at how refined and proper he seemed at times."My contract at work is up in just over a year. After that, I can extend it or retire from the company. One day, I want to settle down. I guess I was just trying to see if anyone was worth settling down for now or if I should stay with my job and revisit the option of retiring later." It made sense to her that he saw it as an ultimatum, especially since he had not been successful with relationships in the past because of his line of work. Either he could find a woman to settle down with and start a family, or

When his monthly calls stopped, her worry eventually outweighed her anger, and more than anything, she just wanted to hear his voice or see him one more time to know that he was okay. He called her after speaking to Cadence and was flabbergasted by the fact that she had answered the phone at all after ignoring his calls for so long. He was left speechless when she demanded that he return home so she could see he was safe for herself. Juliet watched as he bit back his emotions at hearing his mother’s voice, but he was ecstatic that he would get to introduce Juliet to the other women in his life. “We talked on the phone. Come on, you are perfect, and they will love you.” As he stepped to the side to pull her toward the entrance of the home once more, the front door was thrown open, and a beautiful blonde sprinted out with a shout of glee as she threw herself into Matthew’s arms. “Hey, sis. I’ve missed you too.” He said with a laugh as he held onto her just as tightly as she did
Juliet walked slowly across the gravel driveway with her hands down at her sides in fists to hide the fact that they were shaking. It had been a long four years, but it was also the best four years of her life. Matthew walked up behind her and placed his warm palm on her lower back, and she felt her muscles loosen at his touch. The large, beautiful ranch-style house in front of her added to the intimidation she had felt toward their current situation, and she had half a mind to run back to the car and not come out. “Relax, Red. Everything will be okay.” He bent down and whispered into her ear before he kissed the crown of her head. His hot breath fanned across her skin, and she gave a jerk as a chill ran down her spine from his proximity. It didn’t matter how long they were together. Her body still reacted like it was the first time. Sparks would dance across her skin, goosebumps would appear as they followed his lips where they trailed across her body, and her mind would melt
Juliet pushed up on her toes, wanting more, needing to be closer to him. The warm water felt nice and refreshing, but touching Matthew, being pressed against his wildly impressive form, was like touching an electric charge. She was sure that at any moment, she would be startled awake, but as Matthew stepped forward, making her move back, she felt completely out of control. Matthew didn't stop until she had her back to the cool shower wall, and he was consuming her. She lifted her leg, wrapping it around his hip, and Matthew released a deep, low groan of "Fuuuuccckkk," as he placed his tip at her entrance and slowly sank into her. They had only been apart for a few months, but it felt like ages. She welcomed him and his touch back greedily, gasping into his mouth as he pushed forward. "Tell me you're mine," Matthew insisted, thrusting quickly and taking her breath away as he entered her. "Oh my God!" Juliet cried out, her nails digging into his back, and yet, he only thru
Matthew hurried as he heard the shower turn on, eager to join his Juliet. He wanted to inspect every inch of her to see if she was telling the truth about doing better and healing, but he needed to finish locking down the house and doing mild surveillance. For the next two weeks, the U.S. Marshals would have someone posted nearby to blend in with the neighborhood as a precaution to ensure they hadn't been followed and that they were no active threat to them. Once they had, they would leave, and it would just be Matthew and Juliet all alone. He couldn't wait. He finished checking all the windows and doors, making a note of every neighbor whose windows allowed them sight into Matthew's new home, and he tried to memorize what area of the house each window granted the people in that home access to. He wanted to be sure he was fully informed and one step ahead of the enemy should they attack. The sound of Juliet dropping something made him pause, though, and he checked the lock on th
Juliet couldn't let him go even if she wanted to. Her body protested even the thought of releasing him, but Matthew seemed to feel the same way. He held her just as tightly, kissing her again deeply as if making up for lost time before a loud clearing of a throat disrupted them. "It's time to go." The Marshal said, but Juliet couldn't pull her eyes from Matthew. He walked her to the SUV and helped her inside, chuckling when she was reluctant to release him. "Let's go home," Matthew whispered, and Juliet nodded as the car was put into gear and the U.S. Marshal accelerated. "Where is home going to be?" "That information is classified." The Marshal said, and Juliet narrowed her eyes, unamused. "How is it classified when we are the ones going there?" Juliet asked, but she was fully distracted by Matthew's hand on her thigh. The heat of his touch burned through her jeans, and she leaned closer to him, her hands grabbing his arm as she tried to maintain as much contact as possible f
If she ever saw him again, she hoped he would give her a hard time for taking it. It was part of why she had taken it out of the box and put it on. “And I’m sorry again that I chopped you in the throat.” At this point, both let out a small laugh at the memory. “Would you also please tell Liam I appreciate you both for saving me? You also need to take care of Sophia. I know that you keep denying it, but it is so obvious that something is going on between you two whenever I bring her up.” Juliet had more that she wanted to say to everyone and more that she wanted to ask for him to pass along, but the most important thing she needed to say was to Matthew, and she left it written down in the letter she had written for him. “You’re not dying, you know,” Lucas said teasingly, turning the radio down to be nothing more than low background noise. “Don’t you worry, okay? We will take care of all this, and you will be home before you know it.” “For a special agent, you don’t take anything se
Juliet had felt sick even since Lucas got the call, alerting them that it was time for her to enter witness protection. They hadn't told her what had changed or why it was safe for her to be moved now versus before, but the lack of information was stressing her out. They surely should be able to tell her if something good had happened. At least, she hoped they would. It seemed reasonable that since it affected her, they could give her some sort of update, but they didn't.She was in the dark and very frustrated by the lack of information. “Are you ready yet?” Lucas asked with his boyish excitement. He was in charge of getting Julie to the U.S. Marshals, who would take over her care and get her to her new location. She wasn't ready, though, and had done everything but scrub the baseboards as a way to stall. That morning, she had taken a shower so long she almost questioned if it was possible to run out of cold water and had cleaned every surface of the house twice (much to Liam’s pr
Juliet was surprised that they stayed so long. Was she happy to be in one place? Yes. Was she sick of the canned beans and rice in the pantry? Absolutely. She refused to look because she was pretty positive they had expired a long time ago. Still, she kept her mouth shut because she knew it was better than the MREs. "Morning," Liam said, bursting into the bedroom, and Juliet sighed as she stared at the ceiling in boredom. At least he didn't say it was a good morning. That would be an outright lie. She had been watching the news every morning and every night, but there had been nothing so far. "Hm," Juliet hummed. "Have fun," Liam said, dropping a box onto the bed beside her, and Juliet's eyes shot wide open. The familiar logo and shape made her giddy with excitement. Juliet had grown bored and was getting impatient to the point of anger as she waited to hear news about Matthew. It didn’t help that she had to spend time each day practicing her new signature and re
