“Declan!”
It was happening again, that terrible nightmare that she couldn't escape from, that came to haunt her when she least expected it. Gemma tossed restlessly about in the bed, tears streaming down her face. There were her parents, laughing together, the sun was shining down on them brightly as the three of them drove down to the coast for the day.
Her father hadn't seen the man driving at them on the wrong side of the road until it was too late. The screech of brakes was amplified now in her dream, her mother's scream was echoing in her brain. The car rolled over and over again until blackness took over and she woke up screaming.
Instantly, the room was flooded with light, and Declan rushed to her bedside. His face creased into a concerned frown as he saw Gemma's pale cheeks, the te
She couldn't meet his probing eyes in case he should see her lie. Declan was much too astute to miss the love shining in her eyes for him. “Then that's too bad, baby, because I have no intention of having a wife just to put her in a glass case. Women are for loving and…” “And let me guess… You love women,” she finished bitchily. “Yes.” “God, you're such a…” “I warned you once before about calling me names.” His eyes glittered dangerously. “Well… I can’t help it. If it walks like a duck...” Gemma said pointedly. Declan laughed softly. “I'll see you at breakfast. I'm going for that ride now. And, darling… If I were you, I'd try to get a little more sleep. It may improve your temper.” His la
As his lips burned across her throat, Gemma kissed the strong angle of his jawbone, aware of the tangy smell of his aftershave and the slight roughness of his skin. His hands moved with certainty across her waist to trail a path of fire up to her shoulders, smoothing the hollows of her throat with impatient fingers. Gemma was aflame with longing, longing for Declan's possession of her. She had never felt this way in any other man's arms. Never responded so totally to the senses. If he chose to take her now, she wouldn't raise a single objection. She would give herself up to just being made his. Declan drew back his head, his eyes a deep aroused grey, his own breathing as labored as her own.“Gemma, I want you… You know that, d
“You are very quiet today…” Adele said softly. “Are you all right, sweetie?” Gemma forced herself to take an interest in what Adele was saying.“Sorry… You were saying…?”“I said you're very quiet today. You've been like this all day, and yesterday too. Is there anything wrong?” Anything wrong! She hadn't heard from Declan since their parting on Sunday evening… that was what was wrong. He had said he would call her, but Gemma knew for a fact that he had flown to Paris for the day yesterday. But today… He had no excuse for today. And he was definitely upstairs in his office.“Gems?” Adele prompted. She gave a vague smile.
They drove to one of the largest hotels in town and Gemma looked at Declan interestedly.“The party is here?” Declan turned to look at her.“Yes. It’s happening in one of the smaller reception rooms.” Once outside the car, Gemma hung back, nervous about meeting Declan's friends for a second time. But his strong hold on her arm impelled her forward. Declan opened the door for her and ushered her inside. In a second, they found themselves in a small cloakroom area where her nap was taken by the young man obviously there for just such a purpose, the room behind the double doors surprisingly quiet for a party.“Oh, God… Are we the only ones here?” she whispered to Declan.&n
They couldn't do much else in the circumstances. Gemma tried to pretend she hadn't seen the wink he gave her over the other woman's shoulder as he winked her away. She looked uncertainly at Declan who towered over her.“William thought that up on his own or did you put him up to it?” Declan rasped.“Excuse me? I don't know what you mean,” Gemma evaded.“I'm pretty damn sure my little brother had no intention of going near Queen before he had that last dance with you.” His look was grim.“You must have given him the idea…” Her eyes snapped, deeply violet in color.“It wouldn't occur to you that people have begun to gossip about the time you're spending with your mistress? So, your own brother wanted to know exactl
Gemma shook her head.“You can't mean it,” she said. Declan shrugged.“Of course, I mean it. It should be easy to change the brand of the car or the color… if you would prefer something different.” She gave a breathless laugh.“That wasn't what I meant. I meant that you can't really want to give me a car like that for my birthday. Surely you must know I don't expect anything from you. I don’t need your gifts.” He frowned darkly, all humor leaving his face.“I gave it to you because it was expected of me. Every girl should have something special for her twenty-first birthday.”“Not a car like that! I mean, it’s an amazing car, but…&rd
He slipped on his jacket in unhurried movements, putting the bowtie in his pocket.“I'll bring you to your knees before I've finished with you,” Declan taunted softly. “I'll have you begging me to marry you… You'll see…”“Like hell you will!” Gemma blazed.“Oh, I will, darling. I'll twist you up in knots so tight you'll be glad to marry me just to find the release I can give you.”“Physical gratification,” she replied in disgust. “Is that all you can give me?”“Don't mock it,” Declan warned. “You won't find it so disgusting in a couple of weeks either.” He smiled a cruel taunting smile.“I'll look forward to seeing you grovel.”“Oh, go to hell, Declan Starr!”“For the time be
Declan turned back the cuffs of his shirt to just below his elbows.'It's very hot tonight,” he explained. Gemma's cheeks flamed fiery red. The situation, as always, had backfired on her.“Look, if the circumstances were different… If the things between us were… Oh, my God, this is so absurd, Declan… Take back your damned car! Please!”“I can’t, darling. It isn't mine. It was bought in your name and is registered to your name.” She turned away.“You don't understand… or you don't want to. I’m an ordinary working girl… Okay, I accept that for the time being, I'm involved in your life, but when that's over, I'm not even going to be able to afford the insurance of the car, let alone every other expens
Pulling the card key for the room from his pocket, Declan looked at her and held it above the slot. Gemma slid the card from his fingers and inserted it. When the access light blinked green, she pushed open the door and stepped into the room ahead of him. The entire room was bathed in candlelight and flowers… She turned and reached toward him. As Declan took her hands in his, he met her gaze, losing himself in eyes that seemed both brazen and innocent. With a smile that matched her gaze, Gemma pulled him through the doorway and into her arms. For a moment, she stood pressed against his chest, fitting so perfectly. Her supple warmth flowed into him, heated Declan further still. He already held her, touched her before but somehow it felt like his first time doing it.&nbs
Gemma opened the bedroom door and walked into the sitting room of the hotel suite. The look in Declan’s eyes let her know she did the right choice. She'd chosen her dress because of its sensuous fabric and unusual design. The champagne-colored dress had a draped bodice front and back, which was barely tacked together at the shoulders, leaving most of her arms bare. The front dipped low but only hinted at what lay beneath the silky cloth. Declan took a few steps towards her then stilled.“Wow… You just took my breath away…” he murmured in front of such perfection. Gemma smiled at her future husband and felt a hot and cold shudder going up and down her spine.“You’re shivering…”
Before she could open the door entirely, someone swung it open, giving the lie to her statement. Declan was the only one arrogant enough to walk into her home uninvited like he was the master of the domain. He was dressed quite casually. Her heart jumped nervously at the sight of him.“Declan,” she said slowly. He smiled easily, completely unlike the cold front he had been showing to her all week. His eyes narrowed slightly as Jerry came to stand beside her.“Am I interrupting anything?” he asked softly.“Yes… No!” Gemma wanted him here, but she didn't want another argument. Before he had seen Jerry there had been a softness in his gaze that she had never seen before. Gemma looked at him sharply, a terrible feeling in the pit of her stomach.
The trauma of the last couple of days took its toll on her and Gemma fell asleep in the chair. The sleep was just as drugged as the night before and she felt sure that the person hammering loudly on her door must have been doing so for some time before they finally woke her. Gemma staggered as she stood up, pushing her wayward hair out of her eyes. A glance at her watch showed her it was almost seven o'clock in the evening, and the rumblings of her stomach told her that it was high time she ate. She hadn't eaten anything substantial for two days and now felt weak with hunger. Another argument with Declan was the last thing she felt able to handle. But it wasn't Declan standing nervously outside her door, it was William, his brother.“Finally… I was starting to worry…” he sai
Gemma looked into Declan’s eyes, trying to understand what the hell was going on…“What wedding, Declan? Since when are we supposed to get married next month?” Gemma demanded of him. They had arrived back at her flat five minutes earlier, after spending an hour with Declan's father. Declan would be returning to the hospital shortly, but he had made it obvious her presence wasn't needed. He looked back at her but didn’t answer.“Declan, would you, please answer me? I asked you what wedding was your father talking about?” Gemma repeated impatiently. He gave a taunting smile.“Ours, darling… Of course,” he finally replied.“Are you high? You know very well there isn't going to be a wedding! I already told you I have
“Gemma, please…”“I don’t want to be a baby about it… I just… I care about your family… I've met them… And I was… I am worried about all of them… about your father… about you...” His grey eyes flashed angrily.“Do you think I didn't realize that?” he snapped. “You had told me most definitely... you wanted to know, so I came around to your flat.” A terrible trembling started in her lower limbs. He was there… and she really called him ‘sweetheart’…“You… you did?”“Yes, Gemma,” Declan confirmed wearily. “It must have been three o'clock by this time. You'd already gone to bed. And you'd foolishly left your door unlocked,” he added sternly.&ldqu
“Of course, Gemma,” William acknowledged. She gently touched his arm.“I told you how I felt about Declan from the beginning.”“Yes, you did. I'm sorry I tried to cause trouble between you two yesterday. I don’t understand what came over me…” If only he knew how much damage he had done! But he and Declan had enough to worry about with their father's illness without her raking up old arguments. Gemma gave him a vague smile before rushing into her bedroom. Declan was partly dressed by this time, his black leather shoes back on his feet and his shirt pulled back on over his powerful shoulders. His look darkened as Gemma came into the room and she ran into his arms, her own arms passing around his waist below the unbuttoned shirt.&nbs
“W-waiting for me?” Gemma repeated breathlessly. Declan stood up now and came towards her.“Mm-hmm,” he murmured. “Your glorious eyes were promising interesting things tonight… And I have no intention of letting any other man collect them.”“Promising interesting things?” She held on to the towel that was in danger of falling off to reveal her body in all its naked glory.“You… you're quite mistaken, Declan Starr!”“I don't think so, sweet darling.” He touched her pale cheeks.“You don't look well, Gemma. Have you been ill?”“No. I’ve been just fine, thank you very much,” she answered huskily, unnerved by his closeness.“Really? Not
She looked quickly away, all color leaving her face.“Would you mind if we sat down, Jerry?” she asked breathlessly. He put an arm about her shoulders.“That last one wore you out, did it?” he teased. Gemma gave a shaky smile.“Yes.” She deliberately swapped seats with Jerry, her back now firmly turned to the couple she most wanted to avoid. This was so… unfair… So hurtful and painful…“Gemma?” Jerry touched her hand. She smiled at him wanly.“Sorry, Jerry. I think I have a headache coming on.”“Would you like me to take you home?”&n
