In the darkness of his sleek dark blue limo, Magnus knew every single shade of the deep chestnut brown whisky in his crystal glass. He sipped it, holding his cell to his ear with his free hand, and let the scotch glide down his throat. The complex, sweet taste of the half-million dollars ‘Macallan Adami 1926’ was the only thing settling his nerves. After several days like today, Magnus needed more than just one glass.
“No, Tane. I’m not worried about this part,” Magnus said to Tanner Waylon, his soon-to-be business partner. “That’s not my problem.”
“‘Then tell me, ‘Magno’, what is the problem? What is bothering you so much? Dude, calm down. You don’t have to be so worried all the time.’”
Magnus frowned as he sipped. He hated being called ‘Magno’. People used to call him that since he was a little boy. It sounded like the name of a superhero he was not but most of all, it was just annoying. His best friend Tanner was the only one who still had the courage to call him by that stupid nickname.
“The problem,” he answered after another long second, “is whether you are going to be able to pull together your funds or not. This is my problem right now. You know I can’t wait forever, Tane. We must move as quickly as possible.”
“‘Well, this is where you’re wrong, my man. You are the CEO. And this is why you can wait as long as you damn want to. You are the fucking boss, Mag,’” Tanner reminded him with a chuckle.
Magnus laughed with him, a deep sound reverberating through his six-and-a-half-foot frame. He took up most of one side of the limo’s seats, lounging his Viking-like frame over the leather.
He set his glass down to push his blonde hair from his face.
“Well, it might be so, Tane, but I have a board of directors to answer to... You know how those old men can be. Still living in the 30s or 40s. Still very much against the progress. Yes, I am the CEO, but for now, I am pretty much alone against those old boneheads.”
“‘Have I ever let you down, bro? Trust me, I’ll have the money on time,’” Tanner promised. “‘Just waiting on a few last-minute assets to pan out and after that, I’m good to go.’”
“Good, because I’d hate to see you miss out on this opportunity. We are going to make billions together, Tane, and leaving you behind just seems so wrong. So fucking wrong,” Magnus said sincerely. “You’re one of my oldest and closest friends. You need to be part of the winning team… my team.”
Magnus settled back against his seat and thought of how Tanner and he had started out together, until his friend branched off on his own, taking a completely different path in life. But if you wanted a good business venture, nothing in New York could compete with ‘Alpha Architecture’, the firm built by Magnus’s father and now run by himself.
“‘Where are you now, Mag?’”
“In my limo.”
“‘Great! Do you want to meet up? Relax a little? Maybe hit a club or two, charm a few girls, have some drinks… party all night long… I think we both need some sweet distraction.’”
“It’s tempting, bro, but I just can’t. I’m on my way to ‘Fosse Theater’. It's part of the theaters district,” Magnus told Tanner and took another long sip of his half-million whisky, letting the taste settle on his tongue before he swallowed. “Last show before we start renovating the whole area. It’s a musical or something. I’m bored already.”
“‘Oh, wow, Mag… I've known you since college and I never knew you were into musicals. I would’ve set up a membership or something. I would’ve helped you expand your cultural horizons…’”
“You’re so funny, dude. I’m not into anything. But I was invited by the person running the project,” Magnus muttered, wondering if he had time for another drink before reaching the theater. “The PR team handling ‘Alpha Architecture’ advised me to make this sacrifice. The PR coordinator said that my presence there is good publicity for the company. It shows we sustain the artistic world from every aspect.”
“‘I see… But you know that in a musical actors sing, dance, and act, right?’” Tanner asked laughing.
“Ha, ha! You’re so fucking hilarious!” Magnus exclaimed.
“‘I’ll be waiting for a detailed report on what went on that stage… So, enjoy your educational evening. I'll call you on Monday morning... Magno!’”
Tanner’s laughing voice was the last thing Magnus heard before ending the call, leaving Magnus to wallow in his misery for the evening. He threw the phone away with an annoyed gesture.
“Maybe I should join Tane in a club… Get my mind off work just for tonight…”
A musical…
For fuck’s sake!
He always preferred a good action-packed movie to a play.
Yes, not going seems such a good idea!
“If the organizing staff will notice my absence, I’ll let the PR team handle everything. This is why I pay them!”
Nodding satisfied, Magnus took the cell phone to call Tanner back and set up a meeting point.
“No, I can’t miss this. I’m the CEO… I must set an example!” he said, shaking his head. “Fuck! I need a stiff drink before I do this shit…”
Magnus reached for the bottle and stopped.
No, he was better than that!
But then again…
Tossing his cell on the seat, Magnus grabbed the bottle and filled his glass to the rim. Then, he closed his eyes, working on disappearing, mentally, at least, from the limo. But when shrill ringing echoed around him, Magnus groaned at his failure. His irritation only got worse when he saw who was calling.
“Hey, Dad. How are you? How is Mom? What’s with the call? What’s going on?” Magnus asked, hoping he sounded in a good mood.
“‘So many questions, my boy… Why does something have to be going on? Can’t a father call to check in on his beloved son?’” his father asked lightly. “‘We are fine, as always. But I said to myself I haven’t spoken to you in a while, so…’”
“Dad, it’s been two days… You just talked to me the other day,” Magnus replied, seriously considering adding more whisky to his glass. “Is there something on your mind or as always, did Mom make you call me? Maybe threatening you with something?”
Harald Karlsen sighed on the other end.
“‘You know that your mother doesn’t need to twist my arm to make me do things. All she has to do is smile at me and I’m completely lost… She is still the most gorgeous and wise woman I’ve ever seen…’”
“Dad… I love you and Mom, but why are you calling me?” Magnus asked, trying to mask the exasperation in his voice.
“‘Oh, yes… Well, your mother worries that you’ll be too busy to make the cruise this weekend. You know how important these events are to her, and we finally would like to meet the woman you’re going to marry… Your mother and I believe it’s time, Magnus. We hope that this one is going to be better than the last one you introduced to us. Or at least, more tolerable.’”
“What?”
Choking on his scotch, Magnus struggled to get air, coughing, and hacking loud enough for his driver to lower the partition and ask quietly if he was alright.
“I’m fine, Yanis… I’m perfectly fine, thank you,” Magnus told him with a grin.
Yanis frowned but put the partition back up.
“‘Magnus? Son? Are you still there? I can’t hear you.’”
“Yes, Dad, I’m still here. It’s the whisky… Just went down the wrong pipe,” he muttered and continued clearing his throat.
“‘You should be more careful with your alcohol, son. Maybe you should not be drinking while running around town in that limo of yours. I know you’re not driving it, but you are now the CEO of ‘Alpha Architecture’. You need to keep a whistle-clean image,’” Harald replied, and Magnus rolled his eyes.
“Dad, my public image is spotless. You know that.”
“‘I know, son. Nonetheless, you need to be extra careful.’”
“I always am.”
“‘Okay. Now… Back to what I was saying… Are you going to bring your fiancée? It’s high-time I met the woman who stole my son’s heart. She’s marrying the company as much as she’s marrying you, you know,’” his father pointed out in an extremely serious tone. “‘I have to make sure she’s a good fit for us all.’”
Magnus nodded and set his glass down.
“Don’t trouble yourself with this matter, Dad. She is absolutely perfect. There’s no doubt about it.”
“‘Really? Good, son, very good! Your mother will be so thrilled to know.’”
“So, maybe there’s no need to take her on this cruise…”
“‘I must go now. Your Mom needs me. Remember, the cruise leaves at sunset on Friday night. Don’t be late, Magnus. And don’t forget to bring your fiancée.’”
He promised he’d be there on time and then, heard his father hang up his cellphone.
“Shit!” he muttered, running a hand down his face. “Fuck!”
For a while, they’d let the whole finding a wife issue go, and Magnus enjoyed two years of being with who he wanted when he wanted, desperate to live life to the fullest his money could buy.
Having his heart yanked out, stomped on, and set on fire once was enough.
Magnus had trust issues, to begin with, but after that damn woman almost destroyed him, mind and soul, he barely trusted anyone but himself. Not even his parents, in some instances. And he loved them.
Yes, their intentions were good, but he was not interested. A string of women using him for one thing or another was the norm. Now, he used women like they used him and dumped them just as fast.
He sighed, glaring out the window.
A fiancée.
Magnus had completely forgotten the lie he’d told nearly a year ago about finding a new woman to get his mother off his back, and now they wanted to meet this imaginary woman.
What the hell was he going to do?
He needed a fake fiancée as soon as possible.
Where could he find one?
Was there a place, a site, an app where he can find the right woman to take home to meet his loving but sometimes, overwhelming parents, pay for her services, and then go on their separate ways?
“Mr. Karlsen, we’re already at the ‘Fosse Theater’,” Yanis said after the partition lowered again.“Great… That’s fucking great,” Magnus mumbled absently as he straightened his jacket and tie while Yanis walked around to let him out. “Thank you so much, Yanis. You may leave for the duration of the play if you wish, or you can stay and suffer alongside me. I have an extra ticket and the places are great.” Magnus pulled it from his pocket and waved it in front of Yanis. His driver, an older man with gray hair, chuckled.“Thank you so much, sir, you are most kind, but I was never a theater fan. I always preferred going to see a good movie. My wife is more open to the idea. But don’t worry, I will be here when the play is over, Mr. Karlsen. You won’t have to stay a second more.” Magnus sighed and tucked the ticket away.“You are a good man, Yanis. Thank you again,” he replied and walked with the rest of the forming crowd up the stone steps outside the old theater and t
Sunny Makkena… The amazing, sleazy Sally Bowles all dressed up in silky panties was gone. The redhead standing on the stage, in front of him, was dressed in jeans and a black t-shirt.“What can I do for you?” She was even more breathtaking wearing those ‘civilian’ clothes than she was in her stage outfit.“Do you speak English? Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth, Mister…?”“Karlsen. My name is Magnus Karlsen,” he said and held out his hand to her. “And I understand English perfectly well, amongst other ten foreign languages.” Sunny eyed him curiously but sat down on the edge of the stage so her legs dangled off and took his hand. He was almost taller than her like that, and he realized how short she must be.“Oh, wonderful. Such a precocious young man. I bet your parents are extremely proud of you. Well, I am Sunny Makkena and I’m here because Quincy Lloyd said you wanted to talk to me. So, what is this all about?”
Frowning as she stared at the business card in her hand, Sunny almost wandered backstage to gather the rest of her things and head home with Alec, not only her co-star, and best friend but also her roommate.“Mein Schatz,” Alec said, while digging deep in his big bag, “I cannot find the detangle brush I gave you yesterday. Where exactly did you put it? I don’t want to leave it here…” Since Sunny wasn’t replying, Alec turned towards her.“Miss Makkena, are you still on Earth with us?” She nodded slightly, without looking at him.“Good. So, what’s with the face, sweetie?” he asked, sitting at his dressing table as she passed by. “Is it your mother again? Does she need more money?”“No… I didn’t call her…” Sunny replied slowly.“Then what’s with the long face?” he insisted.“Well… I just had the weirdest conversation,” she muttered. “And I’m not sure what to think of it. It’s like in that song… ‘Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it’.”
She shifted so she sat with her feet curled up under herself. Alec made everything sound so simple. ‘Take the money and run with it.’ ‘Get out of the city and find a life somewhere else.’ ‘Forget about your mother’s problems and live your life.’ But real life wasn’t that easy, and this wasn’t a play. This was her life, and somewhere along the way, Sunny had forgotten her part in it. At first, she was somebody’s child only. That life hadn’t been great but it has been okay for just a few years. And now… Well, she wasn’t only a daughter anymore. Sunny was now playing the role of a mother, a protector, a guard, and a living money box. Her mother needed all that, and more. So much more.“I know I’m being harsh, Schatz, but I’m doing this because I love you and I want only what’s best for you. Listen, you need to remember that you have your life to live. This endless sacrifice isn’t helping you and, definitely isn’t help
“There are some things you don’t need to know about me, Sunny… Just like I don’t need to know everything about your life. You are a stranger to me and this is not a real relationship. We are talking about two nights only… Nothing more. After that, we’ll never see each other again. So, as you can see, there is no need to tell you my life story. Even if you are going to be my fiancée in front of all the people I know.” Sunny cracked her knuckles nervously and cursed her stupidity for pushing. She needed the money, and that was the end of it. Two nights, then both on their way.“You are right, Magnus. You are perfectly right. It’s not my business. I apologize. I promise I won’t bring it up again unless you want it to.”“Thank you so much, Sunny. Apologies accepted. Now, as I’ve mentioned, I need you to look absolutely impeccable. So, go out there and buy every single thing you might need. Create outfits for every single occasion. Like I’ve said, all your expenses will be covere
Sunny nodded at his necklace.“Well, there’s Odin, your second name, and then there’s that silver Norse coin that you keep touching every single time you’re extremely nervous, agitated, irritated, or lost somehow.”“I am not touching my coin all that often,” Magnus countered. “Yes, you do, Magnus. And then there is the way you look,” Sunny insisted. “Hmm… And how do I look?”“Like a freaking Viking… Tall, blond, blue eyes… You are gorgeous… So… if it quacks like a duck…” she said, half laughing. Man, she was so observant. Magnus tucked the coin beneath his shirt, wondering what else she might have picked up on so easily.“Tall and blond… I get that from my father’s side,” he told her. “His great grandfather came to America from Norway… All the Karlsen men were as tall as I am, my father included.”“All built like Norse gods, I bet. So muscular…” she added slowly, and Magnus smirked when her cheeks flushed.“Yeah… But none of them had such a fiery woman as a fianc
Sunny dropped the bags on the floor of the apartment and giggled as Alec asked her where the hell she’d been and how many stores she just robbed.“Damn, look at these dresses,” he said, pulling out a long red one with slits up the sides and a dip in the back. “This is gorgeous. Where did you get all of this?”“Bonus for taking the job,” Sunny replied, shoving a bag with matching jewelry towards him.“Are you sure Magnus Karlsen is not gay?” Alec asked longingly.“Not as far as I can tell,” she said when someone pounded on their front door. She froze, her hand shaking. Alec shook his head and they waited, but the person knocked louder and yelled, a booted foot bashing against the bottom of the door. It shuddered in the frame, and Alec stalked to it, yelling to hang on a second. His hand wrapped around the baseball bat he held nearby just in case, and he whispered to Sunny to stay out of sight and shove the bags away with her. She did it so quickly, her blood
On the afternoon of the cruise, Magnus pulled out his cell phone to let Sunny know he was in his limo, just around the corner.“Let the charade begin!” he murmured on his way to the building where she was living. She’d texted him the night before, asking a few last-minute questions about when and where they had met in case someone asked about those details. Magnus told her to feel free to come up with a story of her own and fill him in before they set out on the cruise. Once upon a time, he’d been more of a romantic, but after what his ex had done to him, Magnus lost all interest in things like anniversaries and first dates. After a few minutes, Sunny sent him another text. The story she came up with was simple enough and close to the truth. Since he was taking care of the renovation program, they met at the theater. Sunny started to go into the details, but Magnus stopped her, knowing the only one who would ask was his mom, and she’d pry those little facts from Sun

A FEW WEEKS LATER Sunny paced around the backstage area, cracking her knuckles until Alec rolled his eyes and told her to sit still so he could finish her makeup.“Oh, Alec… I can’t sit… I’m too nervous… This is the biggest day of my life! What if I forget my lines? What if I trip and fall? What if something bad happens?” Laughing, Alec guided her back to her chair and touched up her face.“You won’t, Mein Schatz! You are having a little panic attack, so, take a few deep breaths and calm down. Everything is going to be absolutely perfect. I promise you.”“You can’t promise, Alec… How do you know?” she asked, desperate.“Listen, sweetie, I am your best friend and best friends know these things,” he told her. “There… What do you think? Be brutally honest, please.” He stepped to the side, and Sunny gasped at her face.“There’s a thing I never understood… Why are you always better at putting makeup on than me?” Sunny asked, admiring his artwork. “You did an a
The clock hit nine, and Magnus waited for a knock at the door. Sunny stood in the doorway to her bedroom, ready to duck out of sight the second Tony arrived. Magnus was not going to have her anywhere near the man who thought he could control or take the woman he loved. She was his, and he’d prove it tonight.“Mag, maybe we should call Tony and ask him to meet somewhere else…”“Kitten, it’s too late now,” Magnus pointed out. “Besides, this is the right place to make that asshole understand that he played his last hand and lost. He could keep the money, but he would never again touch my woman.”“Baby…”“Sunshine, it won’t take long and it’s going to be alright. Trust me, okay?” The briefcase filled with the payoff sat on the kitchen counter, and Magnus smirked. It was definitely more than the measly eighty grand plus ever-growing interest she owed the man. The minutes ticked by and finally, at ten after, a fist pounded on the door. Magnus waved Sunny into h
Magnus shut off the shower spray and flattened his palms on the slick tile wall. Cold water ran down his face and chest, tightening his skin. The shower hadn’t helped his aroused state… not in the least bit. One night was never enough with Sunny. God, he was still hungry for her. He got up from her bed still horny as a red deer. His ‘rigid’ situation was not helped by the fact that no matter where he paced in the apartment, her naked, slumbering form seemed to be visible. Magnus flipped the cold water back on, wincing at the icy blast. He stuck his head directly beneath the shower spray and attempted to focus on something else but Sunny’s naked body. “Think of how you’re going to take care of that asshole!” he murmured and his hand curled into a fist on the shower wall. When the bathroom door creaked open outside the shower, Magnus stopped breathing. His right hand lifted on his own to shut off the cold water, bathing the
She nodded once, unsure what to do… unsure what to say. Magnus set the broken pieces down and took a step towards her, but she backed away quickly.“No… What are you doing here? How…?” she asked almost in a whisper.“Sunshine… Please, stop…”“Oh, hell no! You don’t get to do this,” Sunny snapped, holding up her hand. “Who the hell do you think you are? Who gives you the right to be here? You can’t just walk into my place, break my things, and expect me to… What? I don’t even know what the hell you want! Just get out of my house! Go back to your penthouse and… Just get out of here and leave me the fuck alone!”“Wait, please,” he said, but she shook her head.“No! You threw me out, you, jackass! You pushed me aside as if I was a nobody!”&nb
“My son had trust issues with women for a long time. They’re always after his money but with our girl… Well, with our sweet Sunshine, it was different. I have a feeling that before that phone call, Magnus was ready to propose to her for real,” Tora said, leaning back on the couch.“Well, my dear Tora, we’ll never know now…”“Listen, Alec, I came here to tell Sunshine that my son is being the biggest idiot in the world. He’s walking around like a corpse, pissed at himself and the world for what happened, but he’s hurt, and by the look on your face, I’d say he’s not alone.”“No, Tora, he’s not,” Alec told her. “During the last few days, ‘Mein Schatz’ hasn’t smiled once, and working at the bar under the man she owes money to… I’m absolutely sure it’s going to kill her slowly. I’d be damned if I’ll stay and watch that.”“This is what I wanted to hear from you, my dear boy! Alrighty, then,” she said and slapped her hands against her thighs as she stood. “Even though I know the answer, I’ll
Tora was in her living room, taking care of some things, before joining her husband on a short trip to Martha’s Vineyard when her cell phone rang. Maybe Magnus changed his mind and decided to call his mother finally… But when she looked at the ID, Tora froze.“Harald, darling… I’ll be right there,” she announced to her husband. He nodded, taking their luggage to the car. Tora answered the call.“Good morning, Yanis,” she replied.“‘Good morning, ma’am,’” the man said politely but seemed quite worried. “‘I’m sorry for bothering you…’”“Is Magnus alright, Yanis?” she asked quite anxious.“‘He is… Physically, at least, he is.’” His answer didn’t satisfy Tora, but she tried to maintain her composure.“Yanis, what is going on with my son?”“‘Ma’am, he is in love and he is suffering a great deal. It’s been over a week now since he’s spending every single day and night in his office.’”“He’s doing what? Why?”“‘It’s about Miss Makkena. He refuses to go to his pe
Magnus glanced over his shoulder to find the brunette still standing there so he took the hand the man offered him.“Pleasure to meet you… Mister…?”“Amato. My name is Antonio Amato,” the man replied as his eyes narrowed on Magnus’s face. “But you can call me Tony. All my friends do.” Not impressed by the man, Magnus prepared to say his name.“Wait, wait… Don’t tell me. I think I know who you are! Your name is Magnus Karlsen.” Quite perplexed, Magnus nodded. Who was this guy? How come he knew him?“I’m surprised to see such a fine businessman like yourself here
Neither said a word until they were far away from the bar and Sunny’s knees gave out completely. She leaned her back against a wall, but her strength was inexistent and she slowly slid down, finishing on the pavement.“This is not even my fault…” she murmured and started to cry silently. “So, why am I being punished?” After passing his fingers through his black hair, Alec threw out a frustrated sigh and sat down on the pavement next to her. He put his head on her shoulder, ignoring the curious stares of people passing them by. Sunny covered her face with her hands and they stayed like this, in silence, for a few long minutes. At one point, Alec put his arm around her shoulder and Sunny stopped crying.“Schatz, thanks for getting me out of there… No one has ever done something like this for me. You are the most amazing human being I’ve ever met,” Alec told her slowly and kissed her temple. “Really.”“You shouldn’t have been there in the first place,” Sunny
