I walked back to my office, trying to shake off the lingering sensations of Sophia's touch. I closed the door behind me and made my way to the cabinet where I kept a spare set of clothes. I needed to change out of my coffee-stained shirt, and I figured it would be easier to just grab a new one from my cabinet.

As I opened the cabinet, I began to undress, pulling off my stained shirt and tossing it onto the floor. I reached into the cabinet and pulled out a fresh white polo, holding it up to my chest as I examined it for any wrinkles.

Just as I was about to put on the new shirt, I heard a faint gasp behind me. I froze, my heart skipping a beat as I realized that someone was standing in my office, watching me.

I slowly turned around, expecting to see one of my colleagues or maybe even Bridgette. But instead, I was shocked to see Sophia standing in the doorway, her eyes wide with surprise and her face flushed with embarrassment.

I had no idea how long she had been standing there, but it

I woke up to the sound of silence, my eyes slowly adjusting to the bright light streaming through the window. I rubbed my eyes, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep. As I sat up, I noticed a coffee cup on my desk, with a small note attached to it.I picked up the note and read the simple message: "Good morning, boss. - Sophia". I couldn't help but smile as I read the note. It was a small gesture, but it was a kind one, and it made me feel a little more human.I glanced out the window, and my eyes landed on Sophia, who was busy typing away on her computer. She was completely absorbed in her work, her brow furrowed in concentration. I watched her for a moment, feeling a sense of appreciation for her hard work and dedication. As I sat there, I couldn't help but chuckle to myself. Sophia had no idea that I had spent the night in the office, and yet she had still taken the time to bring me a cup of coffee and leave a kind note. • DEGREE OF FANCY   Chapter 25

As we stepped out onto the rooftop, the cool night air enveloped us, carrying the scent of the city below. We walked hand in hand, like two carefree teenagers, unafraid of being judged or seen. The darkness of the night seemed to wrap around us, shielding us from the world below. The wind blew gently through Sophia's hair, rustling the strands and sending them dancing around her face. She closed her eyes, letting the breeze wash over her, and I couldn't help but smile at the serene expression on her face. As we reached the edge of the rooftop, Sophia suddenly stepped forward, her eyes snapping open. She raised her arms up to the sky, and I felt a jolt of nervousness. What was she doing? But then she turned to me, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Come on," she said, beckoning me to join her. I hesitated for a moment, unsure of what to do. But Sophia's infectious enthusiasm soon won me over. I stepped forward, and she took my hands, raising them up to the sky. We stood there, our

I sat there, scrolling through Bridgette's phone call history, and my eyes widened in surprise. There was only one number that she had been calling and talking to regularly, and that was my dad's number. I felt a shiver run down my spine as I realized that she had been in constant contact with him.I continued to scroll through her phonebook, but there were no other numbers listed. Just my dad's number and mine. It was as if she had no other friends or acquaintances, no other contacts in her life. I found it strange, but I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something more to it.I decided to check her photos gallery, thinking that maybe I would find something suspicious there. But as I scrolled through the photos, I realized that they were all just pictures of us together. There were no other people in the photos, no other places or events. Just us.I felt a pang of disappointment and frustration. I had been so sure that I would find something incriminating on her phone, so

As I drifted off to sleep, I was vaguely aware of Sophia's presence beside me. But when I woke up, she was gone. I sat up with a start, looking around the office in confusion. Where had she gone?I rubbed my eyes, trying to shake off the sleep. I must have dozed off for a while. But as I looked around the office, I realized that Sophia's things were gone too. As I sat down in the waiting area, trying to collect my thoughts and calm my nerves, I suddenly realized something that made my heart skip a beat. The voice of the woman who had called me earlier, telling me that Sophia had been rushed to the hospital, sounded eerily familiar. I jumped up from my seat and approached the nurse's station. "Excuse me," I said, trying to sound calm. "I think I need to ask you something. Can you tell me the name of the nurse who called me earlier?" The nurse looked at me with a puzzled expression. "I'm not sure what you're talking about," she said. "We didn't call you. The patient was rushed into the hospital before we even had a chance to call anyone." I felt a surge of confusion. "But someone called me," I insisted. "A woman's voice. She told me that Sophia had been rushed to the hospital." The nurse's expression changed from puzzled to curious. "Let me check something," she said, tapping on the computer screen. "Ah, yes. It looks like someone did br

We had been together for a year now, and every day with her was a gift. One day, as I was sitting in my office, I had an idea. I picked up the phone and dialed Alex's number. He answered on the first ring, and I could hear the sound of his keyboard clacking in the background."Hey, man," I said. "I need your help with something.""Shoot," Alex replied. "What's up?""I want to surprise Bridgette," I said. "I want to ask her to marry me again, but this time, I want it to be special. I want it to be just the two of us, and I want it to be a surprise."Alex's keyboard clacking stopped, and I could hear the sound of his chair creaking as he leaned back. "That's a great idea," he said. "I'm in. What do you need me to do?"I smiled, feeling a sense of excitement and anticipation. "I need you to help me plan the perfect proposal

The next day, I woke up feeling a sense of calm and clarity that I hadn't felt in a long time. I walked into the night club, the loud music and flashing lights enveloping me like a warm hug. I made my way to the bar, ordering a whiskey on the rocks. I downed it in one gulp, feeling the burn all the way down my throat. I ordered another, and another, losing count of how many I'd had. The music and lights began to blur together, and I felt myself becoming numb. I pulled out my phone and dialed Alex's number. He answered on the first ring, and I could hear the concern in his voice. "Hey, man, what's going on?" he asked. I took a deep breath, letting it all spill out. I told him about my father, about the hospital, about the anger and hurt that had been building up inside me for so long. I told him about how I'd wanted to take revenge, to make my father pay for all the pain he'd caused me. But how now, it seemed like that was impossible. "I'm so disappointed, Alex," I said, feeling the tears prick at the corners of my eyes. "I'm so disappointed that I'll never get to take rev

And I knew that I had to let it all out, to tell him everything that I had been carrying inside me for so long."You want to know what it was like to be your son?" I spat, my voice trembling with rage. "You want to know what it was like to be tortured and abused by you? To be made to feel worthless and unloved? To be suffocated by your cruelty and your hatred?"I took a step closer to him, my eyes blazing with fury. "I'll tell you," I said, my voice low and menacing. "It was hell. It was a living nightmare that I couldn't wake up from. It was a constant feeling of fear and dread, never knowing when you would lash out at me next."I felt a lump form in my throat as I thought about all the times I had tried to kill myself, all the times I had wanted to escape the pain and the suffering that my father had inflicted upon me."I tried to kill my

I stood there, frozen in shock, as I gazed at the frail, elderly man sitting in the wheelchair. His skin was pale and translucent, his eyes sunken, and his head was completely bald. He looked like a shadow of his former self, a mere specter of the man I had once known. And yet, despite the ravages of time and illness, I knew that this was my father. I could see it in his eyes, in the shape of his nose, in the curve of his lips. It was a face that I had once loved, once trusted, and now...Now, I felt a wave of emotions wash over me. Anger, sadness, pity, and frustration all swirled together in a toxic mix that left me feeling breathless and bewildered. The nun's voice cut through my thoughts, her words a gentle reminder that I was not alone.
