AMELIA'S POV.

I got him feeling a bit lost and annoyed at how things had turned out today. I wasn't happy and that was because I wasn't sure if my reaction was the right thing earlier. When I was still busy thinking and questioning my fate, I got a call from Mia as usual.

“Hey Babe.” She sounded excited, more like she was excited to hear about how my day went. After all, it was my first time.

“Hey,” I replied with less energy.

“What happened? Why that tone? Did something happen?”

“I think I might be on a one-way ticket to losing my newly found job.” I went ahead and explained what exactly had happened to her as I cuddled next to my pillow.

“Wow,” Mia responded after a while and I heard a crunchy sound…it wasn't that hard to guess that she was eating something.

“Maybe you need to learn how to tone it down a little now, Amelia. That was terrible. One thing I know and that everyone knows about your boss is that he is strict and very mysterious. You need money more than anyone else in order to run your things smoothly so you have to do anything that you can to protect your job especially when it comes in as simple as this…”

I nodded multiple times, “Yeah…yeah, I get it. I have learned from my mistake. I just pray that he doesn't fire me by tomorrow.”

“I will join you in prayers, bestie,” Mia answered and after a few more gist, the discussion came to an end. I was tempted to call my sister but it was already late. She would likely be reading or sleeping, I told myself. So I went to freshen up and came back to go through the few things that I could do as much new duty at work.

After the hostile experience I had gotten, I knew immediately that not everyone welcomed my presence. I stretched my hand and picked up my journal. After flipping the pages open, I brought out my pen and wrote,

“I have to try and get through these people.”

But that wasn't going to be my aim for tomorrow. My aim for tomorrow would be to apologize to my boss. Speaking of my boss, he was absolutely mysterious and things were not adding up for me. I saw him that night, murdering someone and then chasing me almost like he was going to hunt and kill me. Suddenly, he was winking at me the next time we met. What was happening to me?

“Okay…okay, calm down, Amelia. Remember, even though you desperately need money, you shouldn't do anything that will tarnish your soul or bring trouble to you, or bring you to trouble. Both the boss and his employees are trouble so you should learn to stay away and just stick to the job you were assigned for. If you're confused, don't bother asking questions. You saw him kill someone that night, pretend like you didn't remember and that you haven't met him before. Play ignorance and that's the simplest key to living a trouble-free life.” I admonished myself while standing in front of the mirror. I felt relieved after reciting those words to myself multiple times already so I simply went to sleep. Tomorrow was going to be better.

Ah, I screamed as I jumped right on my feet immediately I saw my boss. Just like the other night when I was being chased, I started running again. There he was, behind me, my boss was behind me, chasing me hotly with a gun in his hand. I was sweating vigorously even though it was supposed to be a cold night. My heart was about to jump right out of my heart through my mouth. The more I was running, the weaker I became and I couldn't run anymore so I fell to the harsh ground instead and turned around to plead for my life.

“Who do you think you are, huh? How dare you speak to me anyhow?” He knelt in front of me, holding his gun and pointing it at my chin, and lifting it slowly so I could meet his deadly eyes that night.

I fearfully lifted my hands and pleaded that I be spared.

“I…I am sorry…”

“You should know by now that I don't take sorry as an answer. Whosoever offends me, I will deal with them in a terrible way.”

“Please…please, I have a sister…”

He stood up, paying deaf ears to my pleas and pointing the gun again at me,

“Have a fun journey to another life, my dearest Secretary.” He pulled the trigger and I ended up yelling.

My eyes snapped open and my breath became even heavier as I tried to understand what was happening to me. I quickly jumped up from the bed and looked around eagerly to see if I was safe. After seeing that I was safe, I sat down again to calm myself down.

“What kind of nonsensical dream is this?”

I looked at the time. It was almost 6:30 so I stood up to go and get prepared for the day's job.

“Nothing like that is going to happen. I am safe…totally safe. He isn't irrational. I had that dream because I was overthinking.” I said and I left the house after I was done.

My confidence kept shrinking the closer I was to the building and when I was finally standing, I was visibly sweating again.

“You can do this, Amelia.”

I whispered and walked into the building. I managed to greet those who were available to respond to my greeting. On getting to my boss’s office, I was prepared…not really but still better.

I saw Bonny.

Well, that was because she was approaching me.

Her face was as hard as an iron and I wondered what she had to say to me.

“Good morning, Bonny. About yesterday, I am…”

“I am sorry for what happened yesterday, Amelia. I hope you will find it in your heart to pardon me. I assure you that nothing like that will ever happen again.”

I was stunned.

The apology wasn't genuine enough but who was I to say either wise?

I nodded and tried to form a friendly bond with her but…

“It's okay, Bonny. It was simply a misunderstanding, I get…”

“Alright, have a nice day then.” She walked past me and right into the elevator, leaving both my words and I hanging.

It seemed like we wouldn't be bonding anytime soon. I checked my boss’s office but he wasn't there yet. That made me feel relieved. At least, I could settle down before he comes.

About ten minutes later, Bonny came knocking on my door,

“Mr Alessandro wants you in his office instantly.”

My heart dropped.

AMELIA'S POV I prepared myself for what seemed to have been the verdict that I had given myself before anything could even happen. I was standing right in front of his door, fidgeting instead of actually knocking. After staying for a few minutes, I raised my shaky hand and tapped lightly on the door. “Come in.” He ordered and I gulped before slowly pushing the door open. He was seated in a calm manner, his pen drastically dancing away on the sheet of paper that he duly concentrated on. Standing next to him was his assistant whom I didn't know his name yet. “Good morning, sir.” My greeting came out more like a squeak. At first, he paid me no attention and that increased my anxiety. Is he perhaps still mad at me? I mean who wouldn't be? I disrespected him yesterday. I stood for what seemed to have been minutes already yet none of the men was addressing me. I was on my heels for goodness sake. Even though the heels were not supposed to cause me pain, my situation actually mad

AMELIA'S POV.Just within two minutes, the dinner was already set for both of us and I was sitting opposite him, my back against the transparent wall. I would have sincerely loved to sit opposite so I could see the lights of the city. I nervously watched as Mr Alessandro went through the menu skillfully — almost like he had nothing to lose. Well, he didn't. He passed the menu to me afterwards and I blinked at him cluelessly. “Choose any that you prefer.” He instructed and I lowered my eyes after muttering a thank you. My eyes almost popped right out of their sockets. Two thousand dollars? For what? A single meal? I tried looking for any meal that was less expensive but none was less than two thousand dollars. “Just choose one, Amelia.” He interrupted my thoughts with a drowsy voice and I pointed my finger at just anyone. After the waiter left, I shifted closer to my boss to express my surprise. I would have really appreciated it if he had given me cash instead. “These

Also, have your phone close to you. Plans for tomorrow might change so you need to be prepared.” I instructed him. “Yes, Boss. Goodnight.” He bowed his head and walked towards his quarter while I headed inside the mansion where Mike happened to have been waiting for me. “Welcome sir.” He greeted me with a smile on his face which I rarely saw and I knew why. I nodded and took off the jacket that I was wearing. “How was the date, sir?” “It wasn't a date. It's not a date if she hasn't agreed to it yet.” I replied grumpily and continued walking to the rooftop where I could see the lights of the city. Mike pulled out a glass of whiskey and gave it to me after filling it in my presence. He handed me a cigarette stick and lit the bottom for me. I took my seat and sipped from whiskey. “I agree, sir.

AMELIA'S POVI finished dressing up and carried my things happily as I walked to the door. Since I had planned my day out, I had no issues carrying out my tasks. I needed to be in the company by 7:00 am but as soon as I opened the door, I met Luca standing close to his car, leaning against it with his head bowed. He only raised his head when he noticed that I had gotten out of the house. I had intentionally been avoiding his calls and messages ever since that day when he embarrassed me in public by going against my new found job rather than congratulating me. I locked my door and decided to ignore him instead but he rushed up to me, seeking my apology as he grabbed my arm gently. “Amelia…listen, please, don't leave me like that. Please, I have been trying to reach out to you for some time now but you have been denying me any access whatsoever…” “And what gives you the right, huh? What makes you think that I am simply just going to give you access back into my life? Oh, do y

AMELIA'S POV Just like I expected, I arrived at the company ten minutes past seven. Immediately I got out of the elevator, I met Bonny on my way. “You're just coming to work, how sane of you. It's just your second day at work and yet here you are, unable to even live up to that which you have signed up for.” Bonny shunned me with her harsh words and hit my shoulder with hers as she walked past me. I was stunned. Apart from the fact that my mood was already ruined by Luca’s words this morning, she was about to start hers. Was this a temptation from the universe or a trial from my enemies to make me lose my only source of income? Fighting in the company was highly prohibited and so were insults and shades. The consequences were red enough — it led to such an employee getting sacked by the company's management. “Anyway, come here. I have some works for you to do.” She said with pride as she pulled her swivel chair, turned it around and sat on it midways. She crossed her le

CHAPTER 12. AMELIA'S POV “What are you doing, sir?” I couldn't help but ask him. “You sprained your ankle which means that you can't walk, right? As your boss, it's going to inhumane for me to let you crawl or limp to your office so I am carrying you instead.” He replied and indeed carried me to one of the couches inside the office where he gently placed me on. It wasn't serious that much…at least not for me. I had sprained my ankles a few times and came out victorious. He walked away from my sight and went to get some things. Then he knelt on a knee in front of me and placed his hand above my ankle. I had to stop him because this was getting…too unexpected, I think? He was my boss for crying out loud. “Mr Alessandro, I don't think this is appropriate. You don't need to do this. It's just a an ordinary sprain. It doesn't require this much attention. You don't need to stress yourself over it.” I tried to disengage him from the act but he paused and looked at me. His lo

"I was just asking you because I wanted to know if you know what your job entails and if you're indeed ready to do so." The pay was huge so of course, I was ready to do what my job entailed. "I don't mind being put through, Mr Alessandro. I am ready to do what my work entails. I am a very dedicated and hardworking person. I don't joke with whatever has been put into my care." I sounded determined. The aim was to get his trust in me after all. "Alright then. If you're going to become my secretary fully and finally get to work the job in which you're getting paid for, then we need to change a few things about you. Mike will see you later about it. CHAPTER 48Alessandro's mind raced as he paced the room, his fists clenched by his sides. The phone call he had just finished only amplified his worry. His thoughts were consumed by Amelia, and no matter how hard he tried to push them aside, his fear clawed at him, threatening to break through. For the first time in his life, he had a reason to be this fearful. Every moment that passed without any leads was another moment closer to losing her. The woman who had somehow slipped into his life and captured his heart was now in the hands of someone dangerous. Jack, a tech expert Alessandro had reluctantly called in, sat beside the computer, his fingers dancing over the keyboard. The hum of the machine filled the silence as he worked, the tension thickening in the room. "Where’s the signal coming from?" Alessandro demanded, his voice tight with impatience as he noticed the change on the screen. Jack didn't immediately answer. His eyes stayed glued to the screen as the map flickered

The sharp, scent of the air pricked at her nostrils, and when she tried to move, she realized with a jolt that her arms and legs were restrained. Panic gripped her as her eyes fluttered open to a dimly lit room. She could see her shadow on the concrete walls from a single, bare bulb hanging above her. Her breathing quickened, and her chest heaved as she tugged futilely against the ropes binding her wrists to the chair. Her heart pounded in her chest like a drumbeat, her fear swelling with every passing second. She blinked rapidly, trying to shake off the dizziness and piece together what had happened. The last thing she remembered was standing under the streetlights, crying into her phone while communicating with Luca, and then... a sharp pain, darkness, and now this. Her body trembled, and tears stung her eyes as she scanned the room. She tiptoed out of Alessandro’s bedroom. Her mind was racing. What had she just discovered? Guns. Weapons. And her picture. Was she in danger? Was Alessandro planning something? Was he probably sent after her? She had no time to rationalize her fears. The room had been suffocating, and now all she could think about was getting away. She slipped down the hallway, keeping her movements as quiet as possible while also looking back anxiously. Deep in her heart, she was praying that Alessandro wouldn't get in her way. The penthouse was eerily silent, save for the occasional shuffle of a bodyguard outside. Swallowing her fear, she took a deep breath and approached the nearest guard.

Should that word even exist in your dictionary? What's up with you all and anticipation, huh?" Zach snapped, cutting him off. He slammed his fist onto the wooden table, the sound echoing through the room. “Do you think Alessandro gives second chances? However, she decided not to bother much with it as he might not mean it in an insulting way. "My younger sister was quite troublesome when she was little so I was prepared for both her little and big injuries." She purposely removed the fact that she needed it more for herself because of the mistreatment she suffered at home. "Please, take your seat and let me do it." Amelia said as she sat on the edge of the bed, the first aid kit resting on the bedside table. Her hands trembled slightly as she prepared to replace Alessandro's bandage. Alessandro slowly took off his shirt while maintaining eye contact with her for a few seconds before she decided to look away. He then sat shirtless in front of her, his chiseled torso bearing faint scars from whatever secret battles he might have gotten hi

The doctor interrupted them with his arms. "Ma'am, he is profusely bleeding now, and we can't afford to waste any more minutes. The pencil skirt she chose hugged her curves just enough to be professional yet flattering, and the soft silk blouse tucked in gave her an elegant touch. Her light makeup was subtle but enough to enhance her natural beauty. She wasn’t trying to draw attention, but Alessandro’s gaze earlier at breakfast had already made her self-conscious.
