The robe covering Octavius' tunic scraped the floor gently as he made his way to the Counsel Room where he knew his father and his court were waiting. He wasn't supposed to have kept them waiting but he had received news from Emilia that morning elaborating on the plan they had made during their previous rendezvous and he had sat back to write a letter to her sending it through the ever-faithful Angus who had waited to collect it. His father would be furious that he had kept the court waiting when were supposed to be judging matters and making plans for the battle preparation.

The guard in front of the Counsel Room dressed in complete armor except the helmet bowed before him before opening the huge doors for him. The court was a restless group of men and one woman, Liliah, who was the noble in charge of Camelorn festivities. Maids with platters of cheeses, figs, and apples came and went with from a side door hidden behind the large velvet curtain that covered the room. As Octavius entered the court, all except his father stood and bowed as he walked past them. He raised a hand to them in passing.

"Where have you been, son?" King Philip asked not bothering to lower his voice.

"In bed with a nasty headache father," came his simple reply.

King Philip expressed his disgust with that answer with a scowl and gesture wildly with his hand for his son to sit at his right side. Octavius moved past his father's disapproving glare and made his way to his gold carved seat with two lion heads at both sides of its headrest. The seat to the left where Angus was supposed to be seated was vacant. A maid with a platter of cheese walked up to the king who took three cubes off the platter and laid them on the small ceramic bowl by his side.

"To the issue at hand"

Festus, Commander of the Camelorn army stood and bowed before the king "Your Majesty, as I said three days ago we have only a limited time before the northern kingdom make good their threat to invade our land," he directed a glance born of hatred and envy at Octavius "Your Majesty, my prince, had not begun any serious preparations towards marrying the princess of Amire and …"

"That, Festus, is because my son has decided not to marry her. What good does it do to marry the daughter of your enemy?"

Octavius looked in pleasant surprise at his father who glanced at him before dealing the punishing blow "But if by the end of this week he still has not come up with the best solution to defeating the Amire army he has no other choice but to marry her and bring us some modicum of peace"

"Your Majesty the prince doesn't look very keen on the idea"

"Whether or not I want to marry the Princess if I have to save this kingdom then I will," Octavius claimed almost choking on the lie. His mind whirled with the thought of his next moves. "Before then, Festus and I will work on training the troops as hard as we can with our available weapons. If we need more we will employ the labor of the blacksmiths we have here rather than import from our allies because while time is of the essence in this impending war it is also important to keep preparations secret, make the enemy think we have no plans." From a corner of the room, Octavius spotted Garius with a proud smile the old man quickly wiped off his face he merely gave a subtle nod of approval.

Festus sat back down "As my Prince wishes. Tomorrow we will begin training and we will also take inventory of our available weapons so we can get the blacksmiths to make more"

King Philip nodded "What's the next issue that bears discussing?"

"The cornfield that lies between our boundary and the Curitan bridge. To avoid any serious problem with them that will affect our trade with them I say we give them that field since we have many more fertile cornfields"

"That one is not a problem. Give them the field and be done with it. Any more issues?"

"That should be all Your Majesty"

"Then today's session is dismissed. May the gods be with you as you go back home. And you Festus, may Ashterah aid the defeat of the Amire army"

The court stood and bowed as the king left the Counsel Room. Octavius left as well and headed towards his chambers. As he moved to close the door behind himself someone held it. Garius walked through behind him and close the door.

"I can only sway my father for a while," Octavius lamented as he dropped his robe on his bed. "I need your help, Garius"

"I am already helping you, Your Majesty. Remember I already covered up for you when you needed to see Princess Emilia and I will fight at your back on the battleground so have no fear of my loyalty"

"I trust you Garius but I fear your loyalty will fail when you find out I have been planning to cede the throne to Angus"

Garius whirled round sharply "Your Majesty?"

Octavius sighed and shrugged as he opened a truck by the wide window opposite his bed to pull out his armor, sword, and shield. "Father leaves me no choice if he goes on to negotiate a marriage contract with the Amires. Garius, you of all people know how dangerous it is to have such a bond with your enemy, you have drilled enough about hidden spies and the dangers of trusting an enemy in your territory in me."

"But this is a situation that requires trusting your enemy. My Prince has seen how ill-equipped our army is? For this war, we will need to recruit even young boys to fill up the spaces in our army and use daggers instead of swords and clubs, and hatchets. I know how much you love your princess, my lord but at this point, this is the only chance we have "

Garius moved to help Octavius pull out his armor rack and brought it to stand beside the trunk. He collected Octavius' armor and hung it on the rack.

"Not if I have anything to do about it, Garius. I have faith in Ashterah I know she will not let us taste defeat against Amire which is why I need you to begin recruitment of soldiers from every family in the kingdom. I want you to work with Festus on this even though you hate his guts as much as he hates mine for not choosing him as my right-hand man. You both should begin to train soldiers as fast and as effectively as you can. I will speak to Gustoff about weaponry we should be able to find enough materials to make weapons with"

"I will do as you have said, My Prince," Garius said as he placed the helmet on the head of the armor rack. He turned to leave.

"One more thing"

Garius turned around.

"I want Angus to join in the training sessions. I need to put my younger to use here"

Garius laughed "I am afraid your majesty that Angus isn't of much use to this kingdom or its army in any way. If anything he is only good at charming the ladies"

Octavius shook his head "If I can just convince father to give Angus to the Amires for marriage instead"

"But that's not possible, My Prince," Garius chuckled "A first son must do things such as this. I think your decision to recruit Angus is a good one. I see potentials in the lad and I see potentials in you too as a great leader, one even better than your fathers before you"

Octavius' lips curved up in a half-smile. "Go, Garius, it's not like you to give compliments and I find myself feeling very uncomfortable at receiving compliments and not scathing words pointing out my incompetence in sword fights"

Garius laughed harder 'Yes, Your Highness. May the gods be with you." He opened the door and walked out to the passage leaving Octavius to his thoughts.

He was eager to hear from Emilia. She had written in her letter that she had tried making consults discreetly with the priest about rituals to offer for favors from the gods of Intavia and had not made any serious progress for fear her parent will find out and question her actions. She had written about her concerns that her parent will learn about her pregnancy and marry her off quickly to Helos. She had suggested he come over to Intavia and make inquiries about the rituals so they could both begin preparations.

He mentally calculated how much time he would need to go to Intavia and back. Emilia and his child were his life and his world and he was ready to do anything for them and for that Garius' and Angus' help would be needed again.

Octavius pulled on the reins of his horse willing it to go faster. While the soldiers were training under the ever-watchful eyes of Festus and Garius he had taken off into the stable and had taken one of the smaller horses, one his father would never notice was gone if he decided to search for him. Angus had come back with news from Emilia and it had taken two days before Octavius had been able to escape his father's watchful eyes. He had once again implored Garius to cover up for him. Emilia's message had been both worrying and hopeful. She was sure the gods of Intavia were willing to help but afraid of what the price for their help was goi

Octavius shifted his weight from one leg to another as he looked down at Emilia. She crooked a finger at him and started towards an alternate entrance. The main entrance was covered with flowers of different colors but this one was without the decorations and no one used it but a priest who stood there with his hand tucked into the folds of his cloak. On his forehead, he had a black dye dot at the center. Emilia approached him and whispered. He shook his head looking from her hooded figure to Octavius and tilted his head indicating they should follow him. He led them to an alcove where a tray with two jars of honey and baked pastries covered with crumbs of sugar laid for everyone knew Psagon, the Intavia god of love had a sweet tooth. "My lady, you requested for these," the priest said. He picked the tray and handed it to Emilia, reached over to Octavius with outstretched hands, took his hands in his, and led it to the tray in Emilia's. "Lovers who seek favor from Ps

Emilia clung to the hanging on her bed and wept for her child. She had held her tears well enough while Octavius had remained with her even though a few rebellious tears had slipped out. She hung on for dear life with her hand flat on her belly as she wept bitterly. Ilena stood at the threshold of the room watching her mistress bemoan the loss of a child she would never know and love. On one hand, she held a jar of mead in case her mistress needed it to get too drunk to feel her pain, and on another, she held a pot of hot water with some tea leaves and a few aromatic for though she was a woman of principles she also knew her mistress might require the aromatic plants to dull her pain. She had gotten the plants from the oldest priest who made sacrifices to Daegon, the Intavia god of gods during winter, summer, and fall festivals. He had narrowed his eyes suspiciously at her but did not comment giving the plants over. As she watched her mistress wallow in misery she kn

"Your Highness?" Octavius looked up from the stool on which he sat, a priest was waiting in front of him in a shabby cloak covering an equally shabby tunic that was excessively frayed at the hem. He had awoken early, taken a cloak from his trunk, and taken a walk. He had intended to visit the temple later in the day but on impulse had turned towards the cobble-stoned street and headed for the temple of Ashterah the goddess of war. The street was almost empty except for the fishermen who dragged their nets to their boats on the shore. He had stopped to watch them load up their boats and cut the ropes securing them to the shore with an absent mind. He had imagined jumping into one of the boats and rowing it to Intavia away from his kingdom and responsibilities until he remembered he already had his wishes all he needed now was the help of the goddess of war to win the war. With that in mind, he had continued on his way. "You must come with me to the inner room

“How was it?” Angus murmured under his breath. He was standing at the passage a corner way from the throne room. The passage was lined with passive guards trained to be present and not to listen and even if they did listen and gossip from time to time no one else was to hear of any leaked secrets. Still, Octavius pulled his brother into an alcove. “Great,” he replied with a bit of sarcasm he hoped his brother did not hear. He burned with shame and disgust knowing that Ashterah had offered herself to him but he knew that his brother as well as everyone else would call him a fool for not accepting her offer. Every man considered a night with the war goddess an honor even though not many men came out of her temple at Mount Kpamos alive. Angus raised his brow. “Just that?” He sighed. He dipped his hand into a slit in his tunic and brought out the copper coin that held Ashterah’s emblem and showed

The whole army that consisted of newly grafted soldiers and war heroes who had fought with King Philip marched out to the battlefields with their squires, maids, and a few helpful hands. Both squires and extra hands helped to build tents. Words had reached the Camelorn army that the Amires had set the northern villages on fire, killing, raping, stealing, and destroying. Octavius had hastened Gustoff with the weapons, getting more than 3000 swords, shields, and clubs, the trained archers had been supplied with new quivers, arrows, and new bows all with Ashterah's emblem, the foot soldiers marched in front with boxes of fire powder, horse archers and captains held their horses and led them to the makeshift stable the squires built while battalion leaders assembled to supervise. Octavius, Garius, Festus, and two more generals; Calors and Inobus supervised the all-around activities. Octavius walked slowly in the direction the maids went carrying woods for fire, pots, and pans to cook wi

The blast of the horn echoed throughout the camp and horse soldiers came out dressed in their armor, holding shields, foot soldiers carried spears with their shields, archers led by their captain Angus dressed in dark red cloaks held their bows in their hands tested the taut bowstring and adjusted the arrows in their quivers, captains ran through the camp hurrying squires about their duties. The squires carried swords and shields to their master, carrying also the bridle for their horses. Octavius stood before his armor rack and ran his hand over the same armor his father had used before in many battles, although some additional protection had been added over time, it was beautiful and strong. He began to remove the pieces off the rack and put them on with the help of a squire when he caught sight of an image on the breastplate of the armor. The red tunic of a voluptuous woman was vivid and as she came forward his heart dropped. It was Ashterah. She sensed his discom

The battle raged on and on for months, new soldiers joined the army as more men dropped dead, and with every passing Camelornian victory Octavius hungered for more. It was a feeling he could not explain, he wanted to shed more blood, wanted to see more of the enemy bleed to death. He sliced through the belly of a heavily armored Amires soldier with his sword, he reveled at the sight of him bleeding to death. He used his shield to push another soldier off his horse and watched as he dropped to the floor, the soldier's helmet came off revealing a heavily bleeding head. Octavius watched the blood drip and licked at his lips. Something was wrong with him and he couldn't put a finger on it, all he knew was he was suddenly a battle machine tearing through the enemy army, killing and hungering for more death. Garius, Angus, Festus, and the rest of the captains fought just as hard behind him. With unrelenting strength they fought as hard as the Amires, dealing a heavy blow to their

Octavius stepped back at the sight of the change that came over the brother whom he thought he knew. "What do you mean Angus? Don't do anything stupid I beg you by the gods." Angus laughed as he reached into his robe. "I am not doing anything stupid. This is something that should have been done a long time ago. I am doing the gods a favor. I am doing Camelorn a favor by saving then from the one person who has caused many troubles on them." Octavius kept his eyes locked on Angus' and as soon as his hand came out from behind his robe he knew there was no use fighting. Angus thought of everything. In his hand was a dagger with a golden liquid covering it. It was the Mekai. The one liquid that was known to kill gods and make them wandering souls. "You really want to do this?" Angus approached him. From the corner of his eyes tears fell from Octavius eyes. He knew this was the end, knew this was all his life was coming to and in that last mom

Cleopoda ran hastily down the hall, her legs barely touched the ground as she ran. She feared that one of the people in the library knew she had been there and may come for her. Tears threatened to blind her as she went. Who would believe that Uncle Angus took so many years to plan his own brother's downfall? The same Uncle Angus who loved her when no one else did, the same one who brother food to her when she was younger, the same one who risked war with an enemy nation to see that she was brought back home. How can the man in the library be the same Uncle Angus? Some part of her was glad that Father would be stripped of his power as King of Camelorn, the other part of her heart broke for him. He loved his brother very much yet that brother planned for years on how best to take his kingdom away from him. She felt sad for him but her anger at his treatment of her over these years threatened to overcome her pity for him. Uncle Angus even knew of Amelia's infidel

Cleopoda ran down the length of the hall looking for Angus. It was amazing what one declaration from the mouth of a prince could do. Since Uncle Angus made that declaration of her royalty in the morning the servants had treated her with a little more dignity even though they were still wary of her.She wasn't used to having any servant look at her with anything besides disdain, as though she was a common thing stuck to the bottom of their sandals, and curiosity. Now some even bowed slightly. Even Demeris seemed to acknowledge her presence when she stopped in the kitchen for some food for Ajun.As she walked the length of the hall ignoring the soldiers who stood guard she looked from side to side hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved uncle. She was just about to give up searching for him when she heard his voice coming from the library. She stopped in her tracks listened to be sure it was indeed Uncle Angus. Sure enough, it was he.The door of the

Octavius looked helplessly at the angry faces as they demanded that he open the gates so they can destroy the temple or do something about their predicament. They spoke simultaneously and loudly that he could not hear a single word.Taking a deep breath he raised his voice high above the din. "People of Camelorn what is it you want?"The replied all at once. Octavius' ears hurt at their shouts. He took another breath and shouted louder."I can not hear what you all are saying and as such can not respond to your complaints. If you may please chose someone to speak for everyone."It was an impossible task. They were an angry mob and everyone wanted to represent the crowd. Even before the day started Octavius already knew it would be a day he would dread. It started with Asterah visiting him, draining even ounce of his strength before the day even began. How the goddess could never be satisfied with sex he would never know. He was glad that he was able to please her this time. But as soon as she left him and he heard the knock on the door he knew his bad day was about to get worse. It was Angus who knocked. He wore a light tunic and over it was his royal robe of dark blue with the coat of arms of Camelorn sewn below its shoulder."Brother," Octavius greeted, doing his best to sound formal and regal. "You look well."Angus entered the room."You look terrible," he chuckled. Octavius laughed too but in his heart, he knew that he was indeed a miserable man. He picked himself from his bed and drew his robe around his shoulders with a show of confidence."Any news from Amire?" He asked Angus."Much news. They w

Cleopoda looked at a sleeping Ajun at the foot of her bed. The palace was quiet at this time of the morning, it was just before dawn but she was already awake. In fact, she couldn't sleep throughout the night because her mind was troubled. Since her return to the palace a week ago there had been changes. The servants were still the same as ever, eyeing her curiously and wondering why she should be allowed to live in the palace but there was a bit of respect for her too because Uncle Angus had commanded that she should be treated like royalty. She still had to cover her head and eyes when moving about the palace, especially when she had to go to the kitchen or the washrooms to hide the allure that drew people to her. But these things weren't troubling her, what was the fact that she had seen someone who didn't belong in the palace creeping around. Her surprise at seeing him there had held her rooted to the ground especially when she had seen from whose room he was coming from.

Days after they left the Summer Palace to Camelorn the tension was still high in the atmosphere. The talk and fear of war increased drastically and words of it were whispered from soldier to soldier and servant to servant. Cleopoda remained in her room because Angus told her to. She knew he feared that if she ever ran into her father, Octavius in the halls he would send her back to the temple or someplace where he may never find her again. Father never visited her and neither did his new wife, Amelia and it hurt her but by now she was used to his lack of concern for her. She wanted nothing more than to see Mama Remin and Strukus, maybe even pay a visit to Zenas at the temple if he was still there but she was to remain within the walls of the room Angus had the servants prepare for her. She shared her room with Ajun who did nothing more than to eat and sleep and read the books Angus sent to her through the servants, they were folklore with sketched pictures. Shocked Angus moved to shield Cleopoda from his brother's hateful glare. He had not expected Octavius to be here. He had planned to hide out here and plan the next way to let his brother know he brought back his daughter. "What are you doing here, Octavius?
