Guys! I was off on vacation. I had scheduled releases of chapters, but they all decided to release on the same day. I'm sorry about that!
Isaac POV Maise was following me. That was not at all to say she was conspicuous. No, I had no doubt no one else would know she was there. She was a smart girl, keeping her distance and sticking to the shadows. A couple months ago, I probably wouldn’t have even noticed her presence, mistaking her for just a benign passerby. But, things were different now. Once becoming a lycan and losing the bond, my mate’s scent no longer called to me. I could still remember it, though - full bodied and feminine. It spoke of hopes and dreams. A promise of a brighter future. Early on in tracking the rogue vigilante, it had angered me how similar their scents were, but it seemed impossible that they were one and the same. Now, I knew it was just another way the blood oath concealed her from me. The more time I spent with Maise, the more her scent seemed to imprint on my soul once more. I could sense and scent her proximity from farther away by the day, and I was beginning to pick up on unique no
I woke up to Isaac asleep on the chair. I grumbled a bit, annoyed that he hadn’t bothered to join me in bed, but I assumed that was because he had not intended to sleep. His overprotective primal instinct probably kicked in last night, but sleep won out. I got out of bed and approached him quietly, not wanting to awaken the beast. Sure enough, he jerked awake when I had barely touched him. He looked absolutely beside himself when he realized he fell asleep. I smiled softly. “Good morning, sunshine.” “Princess,” he breathed out. “Are you feeling alright?” I nodded. I felt fine, but I didn’t think that would last for long. I anticipated at least two more crashes before we left this town. Isaac must have felt the same, because he grabbed one of the quartz crystals Brandi had left for me and demanded I draw out more magic. I sighed in frustration. I’d be out of magic soon enough if we kept doing this, wouldn’t I? He was acting like it was a never ending supply that I contained
Brandi's loud and proud declaration of our real identity made my blood run cold. It hadn't been intentional - I knew that - but it jeopardized all the headway we had made. To my knowledge, no one even know our names here. Isaac had called himself Zac and no one had asked for mine. Isaac's grip on my hand tightened as he walked faster and dragged me along behind. I threw a glance over my shoulder, just in time to see Alpha Dolion jump to his feet and point an accusing finger at me. I resented the fact that Isaac had made me throw out all my colored contacts. A few purple streaks and a half shaved head were not enough to hide if people knew what they were looking for. Changing my eyes had always been my saving grace. "You," he growled. "The lycan and the runt." We had almost made it out the door. We would be home free if we could get outside. But, guards stepped forward and blocked our path. We froze. Everything seemed to freeze. No one even breathed. The slow, methodical steps of Al
Isaac and I shifted back to run to my truck. We were faster in this form, and we had very limited time. To be perfectly honest, I was surprised we did not have any bears hot on our trail, as is.As made evident by the wannabe battle scene, werebears were a disorganized bunch. They were designed to live as sleuths - very small groups - but as their numbers grew, so did the sizes of sleuths, until they were too large to even be called that. They didn't seem to function well as packs. Individually, they were much larger and packed a bigger punch than a werewolf, but were slow and lacked agility. I wasn't sure how they stacked up against a lycan, but I had to think a lycan bear would be unstoppable. The improved size, strength, senses, and reflexes on what was already the largest and strongest shifter would be deadly. It was their inability to function as a cohesive unit that gave other shifters the advantage over them. Our short run was silent. Isaac and I had nothing but unkind words to
Downtown Burlington was, for the most part, a walking town. Isaac parallel parked on the street behind Bram's Audi A7. Illogical, for this area of the world. From what I heard, it was a few years old, and he was looking to upgrade. Maybe it'd be something with more ground clearance."Mind if we check in with Bram first?" Isaac asked. "He should have all the details before he and I chat with Benate."I nodded slowly. Truthfully, I was jealous I wouldn't be able to hang around for Benate's interrogation, but after seeing the way he was raised, I understood how my presence could make things more difficult. Hopefully, once I was officially queen, that would change. I didn't like being left out of the loop.My hand froze against the door handle, realizing that, for the first time, I thought about being queen in a positive light. It was pretty easy to convince myself I was simply anxious to make a difference in a bigger and better way than the curse of the rogue was capable of. I didn't wan
The drive to the Royal Moon Pack, my old home, was nerve wracking. I spent most of it trying to decide if I should dump the car and sneak in, or simply drive right through the border as if there was nothing amiss with my presence. Everything within me screamed to go with the former. This car wreaked of lycan, and while the royal pack had an open border, it didn't mean visitors would not be scrutinized. I always followed my gut. It had never steered me wrong. So, a mile or so out, I pulled into the Kingdom Trails parking lot, locked up the car, and shifted. With my clothes between my teeth, I set out on my most risky assignment to date. I had always been my most demanding client. Once I crossed over the territory boundary, my skin began to prickle. There were eyes on me, and not the friendly kind. I needed to act normal. Rogues coming here was not unusual, but sketchy ones would be considered a threat. I wasn't worried about anyone recognizing my scent. If they could even detect it u
"It's good to see you again," the Alpha King said with a smile. The sentiment on his face, the way his eyes twinkled - I almost believed him. The sound of his voice tried to wrap around me like a warm hug welcoming me home, but I didn't let it."The feeling is not mutual." My voice was cold, a clear juxtaposition to my father's demeanor. My father's face resonated with sorrow, but he nodded. Under the desk, I fiddled with my phone. It was possibly the most important part of the plan.We only stared at each other for a few moments. I had so much to say, and no idea where to start. With a sigh, he reached for the open bottle and poured himself a glass. The red wine looked alarmingly like the blood that was on his hands."How have you been, Margaret?"I grimaced at my old name. "I'm alive. I've learned you can't ask for much more."Faolan chuckled, as if the little incident where he almost had me executed was just a simple misunderstanding we could smooth over."You know I didn't kill he
Isaac POV It took a concerted effort to pull my eyes away from my mate's retreating figure. The way she took off like a bat out of hell, I wanted to chase after her to find out just what was on her mind. But, I had minimal time. My focus settled on the werebear in the corner. I was abundantly thankful Maise had been agreeable for once in her life and left us willingly. I was not going to be kind to this bear. I slung back the remainder of my scotch and slowly stood. Bram was close behind. He was my right hand man in interrogations, and not because of his ability to tell if the information they were giving us was factual. I slipped into the chair across from Benate. I could feel the jitters coursing through his nerves - he knew our reasons for summoning him were not good. He never tore his eyes from his hands, never acknowledged our presence, but swallowed hard when he realized he was the center of attention. His reaction to no question was all I needed to know. He had secrets. "N
