Lauren cleaned her tears and checked the time. She saw it was leading to the afternoon, and she knew the family would have gone to take care of their own businesses.
So she left the hospital and boarded a cab back home with the intention of meeting Mrs McCarthy. Since she wasn't in the family meeting, she thought she could talk to her to see if she would help her.
The cab stopped in front of the house, and Lauren ran inside. She stumbled on the maids.
It looked like she was the one they had been waiting for. They stood at the kitchen door waiting and glaring at her.
It seemed like they had planned what they would do to her.
“Do you think you are some special kid all because you are an illegitimate child of McCarthy?” One of them asked.
“What are you talking about? Lauren asked.
“You refused to do your appointed work. Instead, you chose to run around skipping work.” Another maid said.
“I was busy, and I always do my work, I never ask you to do them for me,” Lauren said and passed them by. They frowned and scoffed.
Lauren had seen that it might be Melissa that had asked them to gang up against her, so she decided to cool down about it.
Knowing if she tried to argue with them, they would take it up on her.
“She is going to get it one day,” they said and left.
Lauren started doing her chores, and it seemed like they were more than usual that day. She knew instantly that it was Melissa's handwork. She didn't see any other maid come to help her which meant Melissa had instructed them not to do that.
By the time she finished them, she had become tired a little. She was also heartbroken and couldn't stop thinking about her mum.
She headed straight to Melissa's mother's room. She knocked on the door and walked in when she was s asked to do so.
She entered and saw the woman sitting on a cushion in the room and sipping her drink while she was focused on something.
She raised her head when she saw who had walked in, she frowned.
“What do you want?” She asked.
“I came to ask you for something ma'am” Lauren mumbled.
“What?” The lady asked
“Well, I came to ask for your help. My mum is really sick and needs money for surgery. Please help me” Lauren said.
“Why should I help you? Did I send your mother to the hospital?” The lady asked rudely.
“No ma'am” Lauren said and bit her lips.
“Good, so why should I care if she is sick? Besides, I don't have any money to give” Mrs McCarthy said.
“The doctor said if we don't get money quickly, she will die,” Lauren said.
“Well, she can die for all I care, ” Mrs McCarthy mumbled without giving Lauren attention.
The door opened, and Melissa walked in, looked at Lauren, and frowned.
“What is this nitwit doing here?” She asked.
“Begging for some alms” Melissa's mother said and smiled at her daughter.
“Has she done what she is supposed to do?” Melissa asked.
“Yes, I have,” Lauren mumbled, and Melissa scoffed.
She had wanted Lauren to work till night, but it seemed the girl was fast in doing her chores.
Melissa sat beside her mum and hugged her, then smiled broadly, Lauren was a little bit shocked. She hadn't seen Melissa let out a genuine smile.
“Ohh, my beautiful daughter, I can't believe that cripple thinks he can get you,” Melissa's mother said, and Melissa chuckled.
“Mum, that guy has lots of guts. I should get married to a cripple” Melissa said and laughed after imagining how it would look like getting married to Alex.
She had gone to her mother to talk about it the day before since she wasn't there when the proposal was brought. It really made her mother laugh as she found it funny that Alex would think Melissa was going to marry him.
“That guy really needs to know his place. He believes that because he is rich, he can do anything he wants? Being crippled makes him no different from a poor man, yeah, he is handsome but what is the essence of a rich handsome man that can not be used to brag” Melissa said.
“I can't imagine you two walking to the aisle together. The stupid low-life fools would definitely mock us, saying you left them for someone like that,” Mrs McCarthy said.
Mother and daughter gossiped, ignoring Lauren that was standing there staring at them.
“I am never choosing any of them, Alex or those fools” Melissa said.
“Trust me, I am planning something great for you, and I am sure you will like it” Mrs McCarthy said and winked at Melissa.
“Mum, just forget about that cripple, i am never going to get married to someone like him,” Melissa said.
“I know my daughter, you will never settle for less,” Mrs McCarthy said and smiled.
“Mum, I i came here to get money, I and my friends are hanging out, and we need some cool cash, ” Melissa said.
“How much will you be needing?” Mrs McCarthy asked.
Melissa told her the amount and Lauren gasped, the money was more than what she needed for her mother's treatment.
Mrs McCarthy brought her a card and gave it to her daughter, and then she stroked her hair.
“Use it as you like love. If that is not enough, you can text or call me” She said, and Melissa grinned.
“Trust you, mum, you know how it goes,” Melissa said. She stood up, and eyed Lauren, who was still standing there.
“Your mum can die for all we care bitch” Melissa said, she brushed past Lauren and walked out.
“You said you didn't have any money, but you gave her more than what I i needed” Lauren mumbled.
“What if I did? I said I don't have any money to give you” Mrs McCarthy said.
Lauren looked at the woman whose focus was back to her phone. She clenched her fist in anger. She knew they were really proud and cruel, but she didn't expect it would be up to that.
Lauren walked out of the room with one thought in her mind.
She brought out the proposal letter and opened it. She went through it again and thought of doing the first thing that came to her mind.
She squeezed the paper in her hand, and she walked out of the house like a crazy woman.

Alex sat on his wheelchair in his room, staring at nothing. A maid knocked in and walked in with caution. She put his meal on the table and bowed and then walked out.
He had asked them to bring the meal to his room since he wasn't interested in eating in the dining room.
He looked at the meal, not interested in it. His mind was occupied. He thought of asking Dan to call and ask for updates, but he decided against it.
He wasn't ready to accept rejection even though one part of his mind was telling him she might not accept to marry him and the other part was rest assured that he was going to get married.
It was just two days to when he chose to get married and he hadn't gotten a reply and that was what baffled him the most. But he hoped they were going to reply him soon.
He pushed his wheelchair to his bed and carefully crawled to the bed.

Jake walked into his father's office, and his face was not looking good at all. He sat on the chair opposite his father and sighed.
The old man looked up and furrowed his brow when he saw the look on his face.
“What's wrong, young man?” Mr Magnus asked
“What if Melissa accepts Alex's proposal?” Jake asked.
“She won't, you know the lady, she doesn't settle for people like Alex” Mr Magnus said, and Jake chuckled.
“I know, right, but he still thinks she is going to accept,” Jake said.
“Let him keep dreaming,” the man mumbled.
“Dad, does this mean if Alex can't get her, I can get her?” Jake asked, and Mr Magnus shrugged.
“Do you want her?” Mr magnus asked.
“Yes dad, I mean it's not like I love her but i want to show Alex that he can't get her and I can always get anything I want besides she is too proud, I want to cut down her wings” Jake said.
“Then You can have her, ” Mr magnus said, and Jake smiled.
“Thanks, dad,” Jake mumbled.
“There will be a meeting at the company tomorrow. You should go there,” Mr magnus said.
“Why?” Jake asked.
“To taunt Alex and see if he is up to anything.” Mr Magnus said and Jake nodded.
Since that was what he loved doing the most, annoying his cousin.
Alex woke up and checked the time. With the help of his personal maid, he showered and dressed up. He went to the dining and ate breakfast before he was taken to the car and the driver drove to the company. He was helped down, and Dan was already waiting for him.“Any lead?” Alex asked the moment he set his eyes on Dan.“No sir” Dan said, and Alex frowned. He wondered why it was taking so long for the McCarthy's family to respond to him. Even if it was a rejection, at least they should have sent something. Alex was wheeled to the meeting room where some investors were already waiting for him. Dan made sure to quickly brief him about the meeting before they got there. The door opened, and Alex frowned when he saw his cousin speaking with the investors who seemed to be enjoying his company. The opening of the door distracted them and they looked at who had entered. Jake grinned and stood up, then walked toward Alex. “Look who is here, you are late, they have been waiting for like
Lauren stood in the courtroom as she signed the marriage certificate, her palms perspiring. As she looked at Alex, who was sitting in his wheelchair, cool and collected, her heart was pounding. Behind her, there was a whisper, "I'm amazed that you're doing this." She kept her eyes on the page in front of her and didn't turn around. Alex's helper, Dan, came over to them holding a pile of papers. "Mr. Magnus, everything is in order," he said. "Mrs. Magnus, welcome to the family," he continued, turning to Lauren. Lauren forced herself to swallow and forced a small grin. "I'm grateful," she whispered. That was the first time that day that Alex looked at her. He had unfathomable blue eyes. "You're done here. "You may now depart," he stated plainly. At his tone, Lauren winced. "Go? However— "You've fulfilled your portion," Alex cut in, his tone icy. "For the time being, return to your life. Dan will make the car arrangements". Alex had already turned away, indicating that the conversa
Alex wheeled himself into his mansion's living room, his face as harsh and icy as ever. His uncle, Mr. Magnus, and his cousin, Jake, were sitting pleasantly on the plush couches when he suddenly halted. Their tones were light and sarcastic as they laughed over a drink.Alex said in a cold tone, "What are you doing here?" Mr. Magnus grinned. "Alex, what sort of greeting is that? We are related. Is there a reason we shouldn't come?"Swirling the whiskey in his glass, Jake laughed. "Alex, calm down. All we're doing is catching up. How is married life going for you?" He spoke in a sarcastic tone. Alex tensed his jaw, but he didn't fall for their trick. He said plainly, "Go if you're here to waste my time." Mr. Magnus's face became serious as he leaned forward. "Now, nephew, now. We're just worried. Getting married to a random girl? A nobody? It's not exactly the best course of action." Alex shot out, "You have no business knowing what I decide." And my wife is Lauren. Be respectful. J
As the driver opened the car door for her, Lauren's heart was racing as she arrived at the Magnus mansion. With its imposing construction, the house loomed huge. Clutching her purse closely, she stepped outside while trying not to display her nervousness.Dan was standing at the door, his businesslike manner unwavering. "Mrs. Magnus," he nodded courteously. Mr. Magnus is anticipating your arrival. Follow me, please. Lauren whispered, "Thank you," looking around as she followed Dan inside. With its lofty ceilings, glistening chandeliers, and marble flooring that glistened in the gentle lighting, the interior was every bit as imposing as the façade. It was unlike anything she had ever seen. Dan guided her to Alex's study and opened the door after a brief knock. "She's here, Mr. Magnus," he declared. Alex's face was unreadable when he looked up from his desk. "Enter," he said. With trembling hands, Lauren entered the house. She said, "You wanted to see me?" Alex motioned to the chair
Staring at the contract Alex had given her, Lauren perched on the edge of her bed. Her mind was racing, and the words appeared to blur. She was shocked by what she was reading. Earlier that night, Alex had said icily, "Sign this." "To make sure we both get what we need, it's just a simple agreement." She remembered their chat, and her hands shook. She recalled how she had glanced up at him, expecting to see a human face, but his expression was unreadable. Flashback: Lauren paused before saying, "You can't expect me to just agree to this." She looked over the terms of the contract as she held it in her hands. Alex's face remained unchanged. He remarked, "You stole my money to save your mother." "This is the cost you incur. Lauren, it's a commercial transaction. Not much more. "A business deal?" she repeated, her tone tinted with disbelief. "Alex, you're discussing our life. This is not only a transaction. His blue, piercing eyes met hers as he wheeled closer. "In my universe, ever
Lauren kept thinking about the note that was left at the gate to the mansion. While she sat in the dining room, gazing at her unfinished meal, the words, "Stay away from Alex, or you'll regret it," kept repeating in her head.Alex came in with a composed expression on his face, but his eyes showed worry. Rolling his wheelchair toward her, he added, "You didn't eat." "Lauren, you must maintain your strength."Lauren gave him a quick look while speaking quietly. When someone tries to harm us, how can I remain strong? It's no longer just about you, Alex. They are also aiming for me.Alex's palm covered hers as he reached out. Dan has already increased the number of patrols surrounding the estate by twofold.Lauren nodded, but her uneasiness was obvious. "What if it's insufficient? What happens if Jake manages to get past them?Alex's eyes grew gloomy. "Lauren, Jake won't prevail. I'll see to that. But you
As Alex and Lauren looked at her, Clara stood in the middle of Alex's study, her hands shaking. Just seconds before, Dan had escorted her in, his countenance tense.Alex's tone was icy and piercing. I was threatened by Jake. He threatened to harm my family if I didn't assist him.Lauren felt betrayed even though her heart thawed a little. Why didn't you visit us, Clara? Alex had the opportunity to keep you safe.Tears filled Clara's eyes. "I was unsure about what to do. I believed I could handle it without hurting anyone. However, Jake persisted in demanding more.Alex's mouth clenched. "You put everyone's safety in danger. There was too much tension in the mansion. Lauren watched Alex pace back and forth while perched on the edge of the couch in his study. The ferocity in his gaze was reflected in his angular movements. Dan was standing close by, rummaging through folders, his jaw clenched in annoyance.Dan stated, "The stock is still declining." Jake's spill came at the ideal moment. Investors are in a panic.Alex came to a sudden halt and struck the desk with his fist. He's pressuring us. However, I will not allow him to take what I have created.Lauren got up and walked cautiously toward him. She said, "Is there anything I can do?"Alex gazed at her, and his eyes softened a little. "Your presence is sufficient," he declared. Then he became firm once more. Jake won't stop, though. We must fight back, and we will begin by addressing those untrue reports. Speak to the media, Dan. Ensure they are aware of the truth.Dan gave a nod. "Working on it already, sir."Alex leaned back in his chair and massaged
With her eye fixed on the engraved words on the gate, Lauren stood motionless in the hallway: "You can’t protect her forever." Wheeling closer to her, Alex stared at the icy words. Lauren could sense the storm building beneath his placid veneer, but his face was unreadable. "This is getting worse," she said, holding her arms tight as a shiver went through her. Alex's voice was rough and icy as he turned to face Dan. "I want the security staff to double right away. Bring in more security and ensure that Lauren is always watched. Dan gave a nod. I get it, sir. I will immediately coordinate with the team. Lauren turned to Alex as Dan walked away, her voice shaking. "Is this Jake again, in your opinion?" Alex's mouth clenched. "It is beyond question. He's clearly trying to use you to reach me with this message. Lauren was devastated. She didn't want to be the cause of Alex's increased stress. "Perhaps I should go for a bit," she said. "Until this passes." Alex's tone was forceful
A knock on Lauren's bedroom door roused her. She sat up, half tired and sleepy, and yelled, "Come in."Dan came in, looking abnormally agitated. He had an envelope in his hand. He put it on the bedside table and added, "This was left at the front gate this morning." "Mr. Magnus and you are the intended recipients." As Lauren picked up the envelope, her fingers shaking, her heart fell. Carefully opening it, she read the handwritten note that was inside: Alex, you can't hide forever. Your beloved wife is now playing the game as well. Her blood ran cold as she gasped. She said, "Dan, who could have done this?" Dan's mouth clenched. We're looking into it. Nothing of value can be seen in the security footage. However, I've already told Mr. Magnus. Alex emerged at the doorway, his face a mask of rage, before Lauren could reply. With his gaze fixed on the letter she was holding, he wheeled into the room. "Hand it over to me," he insisted. Lauren silently passed it over. Alex's jaw tigh
