Brielle’s Pov

Mrs. Rebecca Stone has always looked at me in disgust ever since the night of the engagement. It was so odd when she suddenly invited me to her office.  I knew it was in respect to me getting married to his son, Albert. The invitation said 10:00 Am but I made sure I was there earlier.

I woke up very early that morning, rushed to the toilet and emptied my bowel before taking a quick shower which didn’t take much of my time. I wore a pair of black pants with a denim jacket to complement it before sitting in front of my mirror to apply a little makeup on my face. I made sure it wasn’t too noticeable because I love looking natural.

I headed out of the house to the Stones company without informing Albert who was still in his house office assembling some documents which he left unsettled before the wedding. He stopped me from going to work at least for the moment until everything subsided. Of all the things I wanted to be in life, a home wife was certainly not in the list so I objected to giving him my reasons. Albert refused to let me work saying that it was for our honeymoon and promised to let me resume work in  a month's time. Fair enough.

I didn’t want to let him know that I was leaving the house so I avoided using any of his cars. I sneaked out of the house and flagged down a taxi which took me to Stone's company.

I’ve worked with the Stone’s company for some months now but it seemed like it was my first day in the company. Suddenly, it felt strange being in the building that used to be my daily go to place. My colleagues looked at me differently from how they used to. They greeted me more officially now, as the wife of the CEO I guess.

I stood in the hallway for some seconds trying to recollect myself before stepping into Rebecca’s office. I was about to knock on the door when an average height middle aged man stepped out of the office. He looked at me suspiciously as if there was something I needed to know before walking past me.

Rebecca grinned when she saw me, dropping the documents she seemed to be studying on the glass table in her office. I’ve never had the chance to go into Rebecca’s office since I started working with the Stone’s Company, I was mesmerized by how beautiful and well furnished her office was. Rebecca was the first person I saw having a chandelier fixed in the middle of her office. The chandellier brightened the whole place in the most beautiful way and in a special way, sending a welcome note to whoever steps into the office except that the owner of the office wasn’t saying the same, maybe because it was me.

The stories I’ve heard about Rebecca Stone, none of them had a line where she was friendly so I made sure to stand until she asked me to sit.

“Good morning” I greeted her looking straight into her face to read her expressions.

“You can have a seat,” she said, pretending like no one had greeted her. Not to worry, it was nothing like I had expected,  I came expecting the worst.

I sat on the chair right opposite to her which gave her the advantage of making me feel uncomfortable with her unfriendly gaze.

“Can I make use of the rest room?” I asked her to excuse herself for a minute.

My body was becoming hot as a result of how she was staring at me and the restroom was the only place that came to my mind.

She had her own executive restroom but she watched me leave her office for the staffs’. I hurried into the restroom and brought out the mini mirror in my bag to examine my face, but there my phone was buzzing. I picked it up only to see that Albert had called a number of times. He must have been sick and worried about my whereabouts.

“Where are you?” a message popped up on my phone screen, it was from Albert. I looked at the message emotionless before dropping it back into my bag and headed back to Rebecca’s office.

“You might need the restroom again after going through these” She said as she passed a document to my own side of the table as soon as she sighted me.  My heart leaped hearing those words from her, but I kept moving until I got to my seat.

I looked at the document in front of me and then to Rebecca before I finally flipped the first page of the document open.

My heart sank into my stomach at that instant,  my heart skipped a thousand beats and my hand started to shake involuntarily as I looked into the content of the document. I fought the tears on my eyes from falling but they cascaded down my cheeks effortlessly.

I raised my face to see Rebecca’s contorting into a mask of fulfillment. She knew she had got me.

As I was going through each page of the document, I got why she had to go that far to break me.

“Is this what this is all about?” I raised my face and asked her  with my voice shaking in pain.

“Don’t you see it as a good reason?” She replied looking out for what my answer would be.

“You’re so unbelievable-“

“I know,” She interrupted, raising her face from the magazine she was studying earlier.

“How do you think fame is built?” she asked, closing the magazine and looking at me firmly.

“There’s no way I’m going to let you alter what I and my husband struggled to build over the years” she hit the table and her eyes widened as she  said those.

“Here is what I can do for you” she said, falling back into her seat.

“Let Albert be and I will give your father the freedom he needs” she stated reaching for the magazine she dropped earlier.

My father’s money laundery scandal with the  GERALD’s company took place some years back but here it is taunting me. I felt miserable and wished I could buy my father his freedom, but I had a contract that shouldn’t be broken. A contract I consented to.

I sniffed and  gathered the remaining strength and courage in me, closed the document and pushed it back to Rebecca.

“I’m sorry, I’m afraid I cannot do what you’re asking me” I replied without mincing words.

It didn’t go unnoticed  that my words had struck her like a sharp edged sword but she fought so hard not to let her guard down.

She probably didn’t think I was going to say no to her, truth is, i deeply wished I could say yes to her. My dad has lived miserable ever since the ugly incident with the GERALD’S company.

“Alright then, the choice is yours” she said looking at me and expecting I would change my mind.

I stood up and lifted my bag with me. “I would love to take my leave if there’s nothing more” I said to her as I was ready to exit the place.

“Close the door behind you” she retorted with her face buried in her magazine.

I walked straight to the door without looking back owing to the fact that I might break down if I do. Just as I closed the door behind me, my phone started to ring, I brought it out and the caller ID read ‘Albert Stone’ he was the last person I wanted to see or talk to, I hit the red button immediately and rushed out of the company with my heart heavy.

Albert’s PovIt was past 9PM and Brielle was nowhere to be found. I have been devastated ever since I came down for breakfast without seeing her. I assumed she was in her room but she was not there when I lost my patience and went to her room to look for her.I have called and messaged her, but she has not answered nor returned any. I walked and ran round the whole place like an insane man trying to reach out to her to no avail. I rushed down to the company after calling and learnt that she was seen in the company, but unfortunately, she was no longer there when I got to the office. I rushed back home hoping to see her but I got back to an empty house. The marriage happened too fast and we didn’t get to know each other well enough, but I'm definitely not a beast nor a troll. I made sure she was comfortable around me just as I’ve always done during work days, owing to her amazing personality.“Maybe I should report the case to the police,” I thought to myself. The idea was a good one

BRIELLE’S POVI stood at the bottom of the stairs staring, speechless at Albert while battling a hangover. I haven’t been married for three days and I already regret my decision. I cannot even be upset as much as I wanted to, because the contract stated that we can live our normal lives and see other people and after five years we get a divorce and go our separate ways. Quietly I walked down to the dining table and poured myself a steaming cup of coffee. I picked an apple and returned back to my room. Just as I was about entering the bathroom to wash off the stench of alcohol that clung to my skin, the door fell open and Albert came in, with a lost look on his face.“Brie, I want to explain what happened between me and Diana….”“Is none of my business,” I interrupted. “This whole marriage is a sham, to the outside world you are married but between the both of us, you are as free as a bird. So you can impregnate as many women as you want, and I will not say a word.”“It is nothing li

BRIELLE’S P.O.VI marched past Diana who was grinning not because of the delicious spread on the dining table, which smelt so good by the way, but because she was about to ruin my peace and life. I pulled Albert into the kitchen, but Diana still followed us into the kitchen.“What the fuck is your problem Diana, go and eat your dinner or better still, vanish from the face of the earth,” I spat in annoyance. “I don’t see what you want to say to Albert that you cannot say while we eat. He hasn’t had anything to eat all day,” she said. She touched Albert’s arm and that simple gesture made me flare up. “You should know better than to come between a married couple,” I was really beginning to enjoy playing this husband card. Even though my husband was an asshole. Albert yanked his hand away and told her to leave. An inconsequential victory, but still a victory.“I didn't mean to upset you, I promise,” Albert turned to me as soon as Diana left.“At this point your promises mean nothing to

Brielle's POVMy heart sank into my belly and my hand started to shake. I was amazed and at the same time angry.I reached out for my phone which was lying deep in my handbag and dialed Albert's digits at once. His phone rang but he refused to pick his phone. Is he trying to ignore me now? This has to be some kind of sick joke.I dialed his number for the second time while making up my mind on what to do next if he refuses to take his call.I doubt if the call barely rang when I heard his voice coming from the other side of the phone and as I had expected it started off with an apology. I kept quiet to hear it all from him before pouring out my heart.“This wasn't the way I wanted things to be, Brielle, but right now, things are beyond my control and I just have to do what's best for us. All I need you to do is to trust me. That's all I'm asking of you”I let out a soft chuckle at how stupid he must have perceived me to be.“I'm sorry Albert, but you've got the wrong girl on this. Th

Brielle POV The sound of the rain drumming against the window matched the turmoil raging in my chest. My thoughts were a tangled mess as I sat on the edge of the bed in my best friend Sandra’s guest room. I stared at the phone in my hand, the call history mocking me, Albert’s name, his number, his voice all replaying in my head.I tossed the phone aside and hugged myself, feeling the sting of betrayal. How could someone you trusted with your entire being turn around and twist the knife? Diana's smug voice echoed in my mind, and I clenched my fists. My marriage had turned into a bad cliché, a husband caught between his wife and his baby mama. And somehow, I was supposed to be the one to compromise?Sandra walked in with a tray of tea and biscuits, her face lined with concern. “You look like you’re ready to set something on fire,” she said, sitting beside me.I scoffed, brushing my hair away from my face. “Something, or someone.”Sandra handed me a cup, her brow furrowing. “What’s the

Brielle POV Albert left Sandra's house shortly after our heated conversation, his expression dark and conflicted. He didn’t say another word, just grabbed his car keys and stormed out.I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding, watching him walk down the driveway through the window. My emotions were a whirlwind—anger, hurt, confusion. Every word he’d spoken replayed in my mind, but none of it made sense. The silence in the house was broken when Sandra appeared in the living room, holding something in her hand. Her face was a mix of curiosity and subtle amusement as she held up a navy blue suit jacket.“Brielle, isn’t this your husband’s?” she asked, her tone almost teasing. “It seems he left in such a rush that he forgot something.”My gaze snapped to the jacket, and my heart skipped. It was unmistakably Albert’s—his initials, A.H., were embroidered subtly on the inside pocket.“Yes, it’s his,” I said stiffly, taking the jacket from her.Sandra raised an eyebrow but didn’t p

Brielle POV The drive to the bar was quicker than I anticipated, filled only with the low hum of the car engine and the thoughts I couldn’t silence. Why had Albert gotten himself drunk tonight? Was it because of our argument earlier? Or was there something else he wasn’t telling me?I wasn’t sure why I even agreed to go. After everything, after the hurtful words exchanged and the pain he caused, I still found myself heading straight for him when he needed me. Maybe I was a fool, or maybe my heart wasn’t as ready to walk away as I wanted it to be.When I arrived at Blue Bar, I spotted Albert immediately. He was slumped over a booth in the corner, his head resting against the backrest, his tie loosened and his shirt wrinkled. His hair was a disheveled mess, something I’d never seen before. The bartender gestured toward him as I walked in. “Over there,” he said. “He’s been asking for you all night.”I ignored the flutter of emotion that came with hearing that and approached Albert. Brielle POV I grabbed a towel and quickly cleaned up the broken glass and blood, not wanting to leave any evidence of the confrontation. As I finished, I leaned against the counter, my mind racing. Whatever Diana was planning, I had to stay ahead of her.The soft rays of morning sunlight filtered through the curtains, spilling into the bedroom. Albert stirred awake, his head pounding slightly from the remnants of the previous night's drinking. Blinking a few times, he let his vision adjust before turning his head to the side, expecting to see an empty room.Instead, his gaze landed on Brielle. She was curled up on the couch, still asleep. Her arms were tucked under her head, and the peaceful expression on her face softened the lines of worry that had seemed permanent lately.A faint smile crept onto Albert's face as he watched her, his chest tightening with an emotion he couldn’t quite name. He couldn’t remember much of what happened after the bar, but seeing her there, knowing she h

Brielle POV I hated being forced to feel like a guest in my own home, a stranger in my own marriage.I waited in the kitchen for the cookies to cook, my hand around a wad of papers from the hospital that I had yet to sort through. My mind wasn't even on the cookies…..I was still seething from my fight with Diana that morning. That she'd admitted to having given me drugs and was so cavalier about it was getting my blood boiling. The oven beeper brought me back to life. I huffed, picking up the papers and setting them down, before tying my mitts up and taking out the tray. A sweet, warm smell of fresh-baked cookies permeated the kitchen air, in contrast to this choking house tension.Stacking the cookies neatly onto a plate, I carefully balanced them and stepped out of the kitchen to continue on my way towards Albert's mother, who was in the living room drinking tea like some sort of monarch upon her throne. Diana was seated beside her, with a smug look spreading onto her face. I appr

Brielle POV I was not even out of the stairs when Diana's voice called after me."Brielle!"I stopped in my tracks, exhaling slowly before I turned around. She stood next to Rebecca, a veil of innocence on her face, her hands cradling her belly protectively as though she was the saint in this house."Would you be a dear and make some coffee for Mother?" she said sweetly.I missed the scornful tone in her voice. She knew just what she was doing, reminding me of my place in this household. I forced a thin smile. "Of course." I said not another word, just went on into the kitchen, my brain seething as I prepared the coffee. I could still hear them talking in the other room, Diana's voice sweetened with unspoken barbs. What was Rebecca doing here out of the blue? She never visited unless she needed something. And Diana… Diana was up to something, I could be sure.Pouring the now prepared coffee into a china cup, I cautiously carried it back. The moment I stepped into the living room, I

It's strange and I feel something is definitely wrong. I needed answers. In no time, I got dressed and drove straight to the hospital. The moment I walked into the clinic, I demanded a full test. "Because you didn’t seem to need Albert’s comfort last night when Nicholas was around."Her fingers twitched against Albert’s shirt, and I saw the flicker of recognition in her eyes. She knew exactly what I meant. She understands perfectly, I could see it in her face. Albert frowned, his gaze moving between us, sensing the tension. "Brielle, she’s just scared. It’s not a big deal."I gave him a pointed look. "Albert, this is our bedroom. You can’t possibly think it’s appropriate for Diana to cling to you like this when she has her own room….and her own guest to keep her company."Diana’s lips parted, her eyes widening as if I had just accused her of something unspeakable. "Brielle, how could you say that? Nicholas is just my cousin! I would never….""Then you shouldn’t have a problem staying with him," I cut in smoothly. "I’m sure he’d be happy

Albert’s voice boomed through the room, making both of us fall silent. He pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling harshly. "I’m tired of this constant fighting between you two.""But Albert…." I started, my chest tightening."Enough, Brielle!" His sharp tone cut through me like a knife.I swallowed hard, my nails digging into my palms as anger and frustration swirled inside me.Diana sniffled again, playing the victim perfectly as Albert continued tending to her wound.I clenched my teeth. The moment Albert left the room, Diana's entire demeanor shifted. I shot back, yanking my hand free from her grasp. "What can you do, Diana? You're nothing but a shameless bitch." I leaned in closer, lowering my voice so only she could hear. It won’t be long before Albert throws you out with your bastard pregnancy."Diana's lips curled into a sneer, but I caught the way her jaw clenched, she was barely holding herself together."We shall see who’s going to be thrown out of this house," she spat, her voice dripping with venom. She stepped even closer, her breath hot with rage. "Everything in this house belongs to me, even Albert."I froze for a split s

Brielle POV Albert opened the door, and standing there was the last person I expected to see, the man I saw with Diana at the hospital.A tall man with sharp features and a confident smirk, his hands tucked into the pockets of his designer coat. His eyes flickered to Albert, then to me. And then, he smiled. A slow, knowing smile.“I’m here to see Diana,” he said smoothly, his voice dripping with familiarity. Before Albert or I could react, Diana quickly rushed closer to the door, her face lighting up with fake excitement. “Oh, Nicholas! Her eyes darted nervously toward the hallway, where the man had just disappeared. She couldn't risk staying here any longer, she needed to get out before anything went wrong.“Actually,” she said suddenly, forcing a weak but determined smile, “I think I’m okay now. It must have just been stress.” She sighed, pressing a hand against her forehead as if she had just made a miraculous recovery. “No need for me to stay here any longer.”The doctor looked at her skeptical but nodded. “If you're feeling better, then there’s no reason to keep you admitted.
