Right before we reached the front yard, a man who looked to be in his late forties stepped outside, a hunter’s rifle in his hand, aimed directly at us.

Ash instinctively placed his body right in front of mine to shield me.

“Bruce. It’s me.”

The man didn’t lower the weapon for a long while, and I worried he might shoot. Just then, another woman stepped out. She seemed a few years older.

"Bruce, put the gun down," she said, her tone affectionate. It was clear that they shared some kind of bond—either siblings or a couple.

The man whose name I just realized was Bruce finally put down his weapon. He walked towards us.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, fury laced with his words.

“I knew you told me not to return here, but I had to. This is the only place she can be safe.”

Ash stepped aside to reveal me, and the man’s eyes met mine. But unlike the many lustful stares that usually fixated on my cleavage, he simply looked away. I wondered if the spell Agatha had put on me was still lingeri

KADIA’S POVIt was already late at night. I’d spent the hours patrolling alongside Alexander. Well, we’d done a little more than just patrolling.A slow smile curled my lips at the memory of Alexander taking me right there on the hard forest ground."We’re supposed to be watching over the pack borders," I’d reminded him as he kissed me."I’m still very much alert. I think I can do both at a time," he’d replied.I now had dirt, crumpled leaves, and a few stubborn twigs tangled in my hair. Alexander didn’t look much better, but he still managed to pull off that rough, roguish charm that made my stomach flutter. We walked to our apartment together, stopping in front of the door.“Keep looking at me like that,” he said with a grin, “and we won’t be sleeping much tonight.”“I’m not staring,” I lied, immediately looking away with a blush creeping on my cheeks. He smiled. “You can stare all you want, baby. I’m all yours.”His words stirred butterflies in my stomach. Maybe it really was going

DAEMON’S POVEarlier…I stood before the house I had set ablaze, watching as it burned to the ground.I was a fool to believe I could ever have a silent life. Part of me had craved that kind of peace, while another part longed for more—wanting to rule and, at the same time, have the girl I loved by my side. I wanted both, and that was the problem: I could only choose one.I picked wrong.I stared at the amulet, the only thing I had retrieved from the house I had set on fire.I had promised to protect her; I had promised to keep her safe and away from harm’s way, and I failed. The moment she was taken, I returned to the castle to find her, but the empresses weren’t as unwise as they had been before. They had found the strongest witches and sorceresses to cast a spell on the castle, preventing my entry. The spell was strong enough to serve its purpose, but it must’ve drained those who had cast it. They would need months to recover. But like every spell, it would fade eventually, and tha

PRESENT.I pulled my wings back, making them vanish as I stepped out of the circle."Hello, Brother," I said to the Alpha King, my half-brother.He saw me as a threat, of course, and he was right to. My gaze shifted to the second figure in the room—Jade."An old bat who just refuses to die. You're tough, I'll give you that."Jade's eyes shot daggers at him. “I haven’t forgotten you stole from me.”“It was never yours to keep.” I responded. Many years ago, I had taken the amulet from her possession, cementing my place as the Demon Overlord."This is not over," she said, pointing a crooked hand at me before turning to Ethan—or as he preferred to be called, Alexander."I've done as you asked. Just so you know, I might not be available if you reach out again," she added, then turned and walked toward the balcony. She pushed open the windows and leaped down. The werewolf queen gasped, walking to the railing to look below, and a bird flew up, its eyes the same color as Jade’s. It was no su

ALEXANDER’S POVI watched Daemon as he walked around the hall, spacious enough to contain at least a hundred people.“It’s soundproof, so this should do.”Daemon turned to me. “I’m sure Thane and Riley would be proud of you and what you’ve done with the pack. You know, I did rule for a short while—back when I pretended to be your father, Thane,” he said, a smirk spreading across his face. “It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be.”I had forgotten that—Daemon had the ability to take on different forms. My first instinct was to demand what had happened, but something told me Daemon had brought it up hoping I’d take the bait. So I held back my curiosity.“I find it strange. Most of the abilities the Empress possesses are similar to those of a demon. They can shift—move from one place to another in matter of minutes. They can take on different forms, like Cynthia did… control minds, wield fire…”“Come to think of it, that’s true,” Daemon replied. “Maybe their so-called ‘god of light

KADIA’S POVAlexander walked in with Daemon, and I had to push aside the fact that he was in our room, invading our personal space. Daemon made himself comfortable on our bed.I'd never seen two people who looked so alike and yet so different. I remembered how the Demon Overlord had stood there, imposing, wings sprouting from his back—something I'd never seen before. They shared the same piercing blue eyes. Looking at Daemon felt like looking at a darker version of Alexander. Both were dangerous and powerful, but while Alexander had been born a leader, Daemon had made himself one. There was a glint of madness in Daemon’s eyes, reminding me to stay alert whenever he was near.As if sensing my gaze, Daemon turned to me and threw a wink—clearly aimed at irritating Alexander.“How did it go?” I asked Alexander.“He picked up quite a lot,” Daemon replied, then turned to his half-brother. “You should try getting into her mind,” he suggested.“No,” Alexander growled.“I don’t mind,” I added.

Phil and Austin had been left in charge of the pack.Alexander had tried convincing me to stay behind, but if Cynthia was going down, it would be my blade that stopped her heart. No one would take that away from me.“Hold on to me,” Daemon said. Alexander hesitated, then moved closer, pulling me to his side. His hands wrapped around me, keeping some distance between me and the Demon Overlord. In the blink of an eye, we were no longer in the room.Darkness engulfed us—so thick I couldn’t even see my own hand. The only thing keeping me from panicking was Alexander’s hold on me. And then, it was over. We stood in a wide, vast land. There wasn’t a single soul in sight, not even meters away.“Where are we?” I asked.“A short distance from Aureonna City. We’ll have to travel the rest of the way,” Daemon responded.“You couldn’t just spirit us into the city?” Alexander asked his half-brother.“I would have, if I hadn’t been given rodents to feed on. As you must have guessed, their blood isn’

The soldiers let us in without issue—they’d seen us arrive with the ‘High Regent.’ I kept my scarf on, and so did Alexander. Despite everything, I couldn’t help but marvel at how he made everything look good.“We’ll have to split up,” I told him. That had been the plan—he’d go find Cynthia, and I’d go for Aliyah. Daemon had detailed exactly where her room was, so I didn’t think it would be hard to find.“We don’t have to split. We could find the Empress together, then the girl,” Alexander said.I knew he was worried about me, but we both understood it wasn’t a practical decision. By the time we captured the Empress, the alarm—or whatever system they used here—would’ve alerted everyone in the castle, and the Chosen would be heavily guarded against the intruders: us.“We’d get caught easily if we stayed together,” I told him, then paused when I noticed him watching me. “I’ll be fine.”“Be careful,” he said, and I nodded.“You too.”“I’ll find you. Go.”I took off, tracing the path throu

ALEXANDER’S POV“I have to say, you’re far better looking than I remember.” Empress Julia says, walking forward.Of course, it hadn’t taken long for me to realize that our arrival was no longer a secret.“You’ve gotten more wrinkled. Perhaps you need another dip in the Lake of Youth?”Her smile faltered. The Empresses were obsessed with remaining youthful, and that comment had hit its mark.“I know why you’re here.”“Good, because I won’t be leaving till I get what I came for.”“Brave as always. You don’t even mind the fact that you’ve just called an all-out war.”“We’ve been fighting wars ever since I took over from my father. If it comes to that, then so be it.”Julia chuckled. “You seem so confident in your pack.”“That, I am.”“You won’t find her here.” She said, I didn’t know if she was referring to the empress or…“Aliyah. You won’t find her here. She had escaped.”I studied her. Of course, it could be a lie, but something told me she was being truthful. Now, I could see the bag

DAEMON POVHer blood tasted every ounce human. I pulled back, suppressing the urge to gag. It’s been a long time since I tasted something so painfully plain—I’d almost prefer the sting of venom-tainted blood to this.“What’s wrong?” Kaida’s worried voice cut through the haze.“Nothing. She’s saying the truth—at least one truth. She’s no more than a human now.”“Now that you know that,” she said, placing her palm on her neck as if to shield it from me. The empresses had this issue with being fed from—they felt tainted, violated. The fact that she offered told me she was desperate. “Can you now listen to what I have to say?” she asked.I wanted to consider the possibility that she was telling the truth, but reconciling her past actions with her words now was difficult.“Speak.” Alexander urged.“The High Regents have taken over from the empresses. They are far more ruthless, and I fear they won’t be as hesitant as I am if they lay their hands on her.”“They won’t find her.” I said.“You

“Let me go!” the woman screamed. “I demand to speak to the Alpha.”The voice sounded familiar.“Julia?”Daemon immediately tensed. How had she been caught trying to sneak into the pack? That was the first question on my mind. The Empresses had the gift of shifting, among other abilities—it shouldn’t have been hard for her to get in. Cynthia had managed it multiple times. She looked different too—aged, not in the usual way stress might wear someone down, but like thirty years had passed in the space of a few days.“I need to speak to you. It’s important,” Julia said, eyes wide. She kept glancing over her shoulder, like she expected someone—or something—to appear out of nowhere and attack her.“I’m not letting you in. I’m not granting you access to the pack house,” Alexander replied.“You don’t understand. Do you think I’d be here if this wasn’t a matter of life and death?”Alexander looked at me. I gave him a nod. We could let her in.The soldiers escorted Julia into the dungeons—to th

KADIA’S POVThe meeting was tense. Voices rose higher and higher; it was unusual for a gathering of pack leaders to be this chaotic. Phil sat by my side, and Austin sat by Alexander. I would’ve thought it would be wiser for Daemon to be present, but if he wasn’t here, it only meant Alexander didn’t trust him enough to attend.“When everyone is speaking, no one’s listening,” Alexander said, and all arguments ceased, the room falling into silence. “There is indeed an army of the undead; I’ve seen it with my very own eyes, and so has my Luna. Creatures that even bullets made of the finest silver cannot kill.”“How do you expect us to believe in the sudden appearance of these creatures? I’ve never seen any, and with all due respect, this sounds more like something out of a fantasy novel,” Alpha Cain said.“You are a man of your word, and if you say these creatures exist, then they most likely do. But if none of us have laid eyes on them, perhaps they aren’t truly our concern,” Gamma Timo

ALIYAH’S POVThe light blue gown I wore clung to my skin, completely soaked. I was cold. I should change into something dry, something comfortable—but I couldn’t bring myself to move. My mind reeled with everything Daemon had said.Would he really have given up his title for me?Who was I kidding? He only said that to manipulate me. The title meant everything to him—at least, that’s what the more cynical voice in my head argued. But what if he hadn’t been lying? What if he really had tried to get into the castle, but the spell kept him out? What if everything he said was actually true? That was always my problem. With him, I could never tell the lie from the truth.A part of me wondered if he was still standing out there in the rain or if he had finally given up. Still in my soaking wet clothes, I stepped into the room where Ash had been kept, surprised by how quickly he was recovering. His once pale skin had started to regain its color, and his breathing was no longer labored. He l

DAEMON“You really want to know who Ash is? He’s my soulmate,” she said.A memory flashed back into my mind. Right before I killed the human girl Tasha, she had mentioned a man. I hadn’t thought much of it, not until now.“How long?” I asked. “How long have you known him?”A moment of silence passed.“My whole life.”My chest tightened with an unfamiliar emotion I hadn’t felt in a long time—betrayal. When I tasted his blood, I felt it; it reminded me of hers. It was strange, but I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that there was something more between the two of them, and now I understood why.I deserved this. I deserved to lose her. In fact, I should be thankful to Ash for saving her life when I couldn’t. But I wasn’t a good man, and I wanted her for myself. I wanted her so badly that the thought of letting her go wasn’t even an option. She believed I had abandoned her. If only she knew that she was all I could think about. Right before she walked in, Kaida and I had been picking ou

I couldn’t believe I’d never taken a moment to consider what might happen to Daemon if the venom had side effects—even on demons.“I’ll do anything for you, you know that.”“This is risky… and Sebastian isn’t even sure you won’t get hurt.”“Sebastian.” Daemon repeated the name. It struck me that he might know the man. “What do I have to do?” he asked.“I have a friend who was bitten by a flesh-eater. The venom from the bite is slowly killing him. He’s running out of time—he needs help.”“Do I know this person?”This had been one of my worries, that Daemon won’t help when he discovers who Ash was.“Yes,” I answered. Ash and Daemon did meet—Daemon had spared his life, but that was when Ash had been in his wolf form. “No,” I corrected myself. They hadn’t met in person. “He’s in this because of me. He was trying to protect me. Please, you have to help him.”Daemon only nodded before wrapping his arms around me, and in the next moment, we were right in front of Sebastian’s house.“How di

“Who are you, and state your business,” the soldiers demanded.Sebastian had brought me to the Nightshade Pack, but he’d refused to go any farther. I suspected it had something to do with the Alpha King.“I need to see the Alpha.”“What is your name?”I couldn’t tell them my real name. If I did, word of where I was could spread, and the Empresses would come after me. I had to think of something—fast.“I’m a friend of the Alpha.”“You don’t look very familiar,” said the soldier with chestnut-brown hair, eyeing me from head to toe.“I advise you to go inform the Alpha that a visitor is here to see him,” I said, sounding more confident than I felt. “I don’t think he would take it lightly if I’m kept waiting.”The soldier nodded to the dark-skinned man beside him, and the man turned to go find the Alpha.I didn’t think the Alpha knew what I looked like; the only time I’d visited this pack, I’d been inside a carriage, and I doubted the curtain had revealed much. ALIYAH’S POVAsh was covered in sweat, his body trembling. The infection had spread throughout his arm, dark green veins crawling beneath his skin.Another cry of pain tore from his lips.“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice breaking as I wiped his forehead with a wet towel. The warlock, Sebastian, had tried everything—every spell, every remedy he could think of—but nothing had worked. The injury was unlike anything we’d seen before, and we’ve had no luck finding demons.Bruce had gone back to the place where Daemon and I had lived, only to return with the grim news that the location had been reduced to ashes. For a moment, fear gripped me, the thought that those hunting Daemon had finally caught up with him. But the warlock, Sebastian, remained convinced that Daemon was still out there somewhere. The question was: where? For now, there was nothing we could do for Ash other than prepare for the worst. Amputating the arm had become the only viable option. Sebastian had to perform the pro

Daemon appeared out of nowhere, his gaze sweeping over the approaching swarm of flesh-eaters.“Perhaps I just saved the day.” He gripped both of us, and in the blink of an eye, we were gone.He stopped at the pack’s borders. He hadn’t been able to travel this far the last time, and the only explanation for that was that he had fed on someone.“Where is Cynthia?” I asked, my voice barely recognizable. “I warned you—I told you the only one who gets to kill her is me.”“Of course, and that’s why she’s waiting in the dungeons. You’re welcome by the way.”“You didn’t stick to the plan,” Alexander said, his voice calm but sharp.“But I came back.”“Yeah, that’s what’s surprising,” Alexander replied, his gaze narrowing. “Why? You must’ve figured out the girl was never in the castle. You didn’t have to save us, yet you did.”“We made a deal, and I’m a man of my word—well, I try to be.” Daemon said with a small smirk, but I could still see the disappointment in his eyes.
