I swallowed.

No underwear had been picked out by him, and a part of me knew it was no mistake; he wanted me bare beneath this dress.

I let the robe fall to the floor; his intense gaze remained on me, but he made no move. I quickly put on the gown.

It was pretty—pretty wasn't the word; sexy was the right word, and it was the most revealing thing I had ever worn my whole life. I might as well walk around naked. The silk dress was strapless, revealing a whole lot of cleavages, and it had a deep slit by the side, exposing my thighs.

"I can't wear this."

"It is beautiful."

"Isn't it too revealing? What kind of impression would I make on your parents, wearing this?"

"One they would never forget. You are a true beauty, I would love to show you off to the world."

"I am not a trophy, and I am also 'not' wearing this Thane."

His eyes settled on me, but before he could speak, there was a distraction.

"Where is my daughter? Take me to her this instant!" A voice I recognized called out; h

I wished I could take back the words I had said; it had only been a slip. I had been so angry at her; couldn't she see the sacrifice I was making? Couldn't she see that this was our only chance at being free?It would only be six months, and then it would be all over, but she didn't know that."I'm sorry," she says. "You are right; I don't know what I was thinking. I think I should leave now and go settle in my new space," she says, turning away and heading for the door."Mom, no, I didn't mean it. I'm sorry""No. No you're not, but when he breaks you, don't come running to me; I might not be able to help you.".With that, she walks away, and I couldn't help the shock I felt. My mother was loving and kind; when did she become so cold? The answer to that question had everything to do with the nightshade pack, with Thane, and whatever secret my mother held to herself.Yet I had this strange feeling like I was losing the only person who truly cared for me. The emptiness in her eyes when

"This was once called the Alpha's chamber, but Thane never did like the place," Axel informed me, but I couldn't make up a response, not when the nerves were eating me up. I was meeting his 'parents', the Alpha King and Queen. I walked in, but Axel didn't follow. The first person I noticed was Thane; he leaned against the wall looking very imposing. They seemed to have been in the middle of a conversation, which quickly ended the moment I arrived. Thane's eyes assessed me, and I could see the disapproval in his eyes—those eyes that seemed to darken the moment he realized I wasn't in the blue dress he picked out. I hadn't imagined it; his eyes did change colour according to his mood. I gave a low bow, my eyes down. I had seen Ryker's mother do this before. "Rise," the deep, cold voice called out, and I finally dared to stare into the eyes of Alpha Slade Blackwood of the New Blood Pack. Now I knew where Thane got those eyes from, though his father's were a different shade. Alpha Sla

I felt Freya’s grip on my arm the moment we were out of sight.“Come with me,” she says, her voice was raspy and barely audible, almost like she spent so much of her days in silence; she had forgotten how to speak right. I let her lead me into an empty room, and she locked the door.My heart pounded. Should I be afraid of her? There was something about her that was indeed different.“Why are we here?” I questioned“I want to talk to you,” she said, her voice a little bolder now. “There are a few things you need to know about being the Alpha’s mate." She said, and I nodded, ready to do anything to be in her good books. Her mate didn’t seem to like me, maybe things could change if I gave her the right impression. She lifted her veil and let it fall over her hair. I held in a gasp. Her face was scarred; that was why she was in a veil, why she had left no skin exposed; she was hiding the scars. I should have suspected this when I saw her standing behind Alpha Slade, her head down, but of c

I followed after him, a sense of dread settling in the pit of my stomach. He led me back into our room and shut the door. I inhaled. “Things went rough with your mother, right?” He asked, this question I did not expect. “She doesn’t like you very much.” “That’s understandable,” he says. “You know, you did well today—with my father, I mean.” “I did?” “Yes. Though I didn’t miss the fact that you had again disobeyed me, You took off the clothes—was it because of your mother?” “Yes... No. I couldn’t walk around looking like a whore.” He walked closer, and it took everything in me to stand still. His fingers traced the fabric of the brown gown I had chosen—without asking for permission, of course. “You liked being well covered?” He asked “Yes” “Just like my mother, Freya?” I think my heart skipped a bit right there. I remembered the scars all over her body, they had been the reason she left no skin uncovered. "How could you allow that to happen to her?"

"There had been a reason I wanted you in that dress, Riley; let's say I wanted my father 'infuriated'." "That wouldn't be a good thing since I was hoping to leave a good impression" "You don't understand; my father has this strange way of thinking, one I don't share with him; he believes fear is another means of power." "And you don't think so?" I asked, knowing full well that Alpha Thane was feared amongst all regions. Though he had other enviable and equally intimidating achievements capable of giving him same influence, many still ‘feared’ him. "Is different when you enforce such methods on family too. That's what he made my mother understand, he wanted her to fear him, tremble in his presence and now she had lost her own voice, he keeps her wrapped up like some mummy, I don't like that, so letting you wear something so provocative was challenging him in some way" "I thought... I.. I'm sorry" "Yet, Riley, I am glad you fought me for what you wanted." "I thought that wa

"What books did you pick?" Axel asked as we headed back to my room."Just some history books," I lied."You are into those?""There wasn't much to select from," I lied again."True," he agreed. I was glad we moved on from that topic quickly. "A maid would be here soon with some healthy food. When had been the last time you ate?""A few days ago.""Days?""I am used to it." I paused, deciding if I should tell him. "I was born an omega; I am used to staying days without food.""Omegas are to be fed too, just like every other.""Not in the Windborne Pack""It would be different here," Axel promised..A few minutes later, there was a soft knock on the door. It was 'the' maid, and she came in with a tray in her hands. She gave a deep bow, placing the tray on the table before quickly exiting the room."Whatever is in there smells really nice.""It's meat balls and mashed potatoes," he said."That seems a bit much, don't you think?""You've not eaten in days; you need as much as you can tak

The day went by in a flash, and soon it was already evening. "You should get dressed now; do you need help with that?" Axel asked. "No. I know my way around those," I said, picking out a green gown from my wardrobe. Surprisingly, all the clothes here were my size, and that was very... creepy. "The red one" "What?" "The red one would be better," Axel said, and I picked out the red gown. It was a beautiful piece, and I wondered how much it cost. I imagine it cost a lot. "You are right."I didn't do much with my hair; I was too nervous to even try, but I left it down, brushing through it a couple of times. "Thane is here," Axel announced, even before I heard the footsteps. Just then, Thane walked in, and my eyes traveled to him. "Why didn't you tell me?" I sneered at him. "Tell you what?" he asked, his gaze trailing right back to Axel, who shrugged innocently. "You told me I was to attend some party; you never told me it was some joining ritual." "You would have found out in th

Thane rose, and by his signal, I rose too. He took my hands. I knew it was all an act; I should be trying harder; we had the whole pack to convince now, but I couldn't help but think about 'the marking'. The fact that everyone here would watch us. How was this normal? Thane drew me closer to him. "Don't fight me," he whispers, low enough that only I could hear him, and then his lips met mine. The kiss was gentle at first and then demanding; he consumed me, and all I had to do was play along, even if my eyes teared at the knowledge that he would be doing this here, right now. Maybe I could just close my eyes and pretend it was just the both of us. That wouldn't be hard, right? His lips finally left mine, and I was sure my lips were swollen and my cheeks flushed. "My mate would be marked and claimed tonight," he announced, and the whole crowd erupted. I watched the faces of the people waiting to see me naked. "But it would be done in private," he says, and the applause died down. I

  • Contractually Yours, Alpha   Chapter Two Hundred and Thirty Nine

DAEMON POVHer blood tasted every ounce human. I pulled back, suppressing the urge to gag. It’s been a long time since I tasted something so painfully plain—I’d almost prefer the sting of venom-tainted blood to this.“What’s wrong?” Kaida’s worried voice cut through the haze.“Nothing. She’s saying the truth—at least one truth. She’s no more than a human now.”“Now that you know that,” she said, placing her palm on her neck as if to shield it from me. The empresses had this issue with being fed from—they felt tainted, violated. The fact that she offered told me she was desperate. “Can you now listen to what I have to say?” she asked.I wanted to consider the possibility that she was telling the truth, but reconciling her past actions with her words now was difficult.“Speak.” Alexander urged.“The High Regents have taken over from the empresses. They are far more ruthless, and I fear they won’t be as hesitant as I am if they lay their hands on her.”“They won’t find her.” I said.“You

“Let me go!” the woman screamed. “I demand to speak to the Alpha.”The voice sounded familiar.“Julia?”Daemon immediately tensed. How had she been caught trying to sneak into the pack? That was the first question on my mind. The Empresses had the gift of shifting, among other abilities—it shouldn’t have been hard for her to get in. Cynthia had managed it multiple times. She looked different too—aged, not in the usual way stress might wear someone down, but like thirty years had passed in the space of a few days.“I need to speak to you. It’s important,” Julia said, eyes wide. She kept glancing over her shoulder, like she expected someone—or something—to appear out of nowhere and attack her.“I’m not letting you in. I’m not granting you access to the pack house,” Alexander replied.“You don’t understand. Do you think I’d be here if this wasn’t a matter of life and death?”Alexander looked at me. I gave him a nod. We could let her in.The soldiers escorted Julia into the dungeons—to th

KADIA’S POVThe meeting was tense. Voices rose higher and higher; it was unusual for a gathering of pack leaders to be this chaotic. Phil sat by my side, and Austin sat by Alexander. I would’ve thought it would be wiser for Daemon to be present, but if he wasn’t here, it only meant Alexander didn’t trust him enough to attend.“When everyone is speaking, no one’s listening,” Alexander said, and all arguments ceased, the room falling into silence. “There is indeed an army of the undead; I’ve seen it with my very own eyes, and so has my Luna. Creatures that even bullets made of the finest silver cannot kill.”“How do you expect us to believe in the sudden appearance of these creatures? I’ve never seen any, and with all due respect, this sounds more like something out of a fantasy novel,” Alpha Cain said.“You are a man of your word, and if you say these creatures exist, then they most likely do. But if none of us have laid eyes on them, perhaps they aren’t truly our concern,” Gamma Timo

ALIYAH’S POVThe light blue gown I wore clung to my skin, completely soaked. I was cold. I should change into something dry, something comfortable—but I couldn’t bring myself to move. My mind reeled with everything Daemon had said.Would he really have given up his title for me?Who was I kidding? He only said that to manipulate me. The title meant everything to him—at least, that’s what the more cynical voice in my head argued. But what if he hadn’t been lying? What if he really had tried to get into the castle, but the spell kept him out? What if everything he said was actually true? That was always my problem. With him, I could never tell the lie from the truth.A part of me wondered if he was still standing out there in the rain or if he had finally given up. Still in my soaking wet clothes, I stepped into the room where Ash had been kept, surprised by how quickly he was recovering. His once pale skin had started to regain its color, and his breathing was no longer labored. He l

DAEMON“You really want to know who Ash is? He’s my soulmate,” she said.A memory flashed back into my mind. Right before I killed the human girl Tasha, she had mentioned a man. I hadn’t thought much of it, not until now.“How long?” I asked. “How long have you known him?”A moment of silence passed.“My whole life.”My chest tightened with an unfamiliar emotion I hadn’t felt in a long time—betrayal. When I tasted his blood, I felt it; it reminded me of hers. It was strange, but I couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that there was something more between the two of them, and now I understood why.I deserved this. I deserved to lose her. In fact, I should be thankful to Ash for saving her life when I couldn’t. But I wasn’t a good man, and I wanted her for myself. I wanted her so badly that the thought of letting her go wasn’t even an option. She believed I had abandoned her. If only she knew that she was all I could think about. Right before she walked in, Kaida and I had been picking ou

I couldn’t believe I’d never taken a moment to consider what might happen to Daemon if the venom had side effects—even on demons.“I’ll do anything for you, you know that.”“This is risky… and Sebastian isn’t even sure you won’t get hurt.”“Sebastian.” Daemon repeated the name. It struck me that he might know the man. “What do I have to do?” he asked.“I have a friend who was bitten by a flesh-eater. The venom from the bite is slowly killing him. He’s running out of time—he needs help.”“Do I know this person?”This had been one of my worries, that Daemon won’t help when he discovers who Ash was.“Yes,” I answered. Ash and Daemon did meet—Daemon had spared his life, but that was when Ash had been in his wolf form. “No,” I corrected myself. They hadn’t met in person. “He’s in this because of me. He was trying to protect me. Please, you have to help him.”Daemon only nodded before wrapping his arms around me, and in the next moment, we were right in front of Sebastian’s house.“How di

“Who are you, and state your business,” the soldiers demanded.Sebastian had brought me to the Nightshade Pack, but he’d refused to go any farther. I suspected it had something to do with the Alpha King.“I need to see the Alpha.”“What is your name?”I couldn’t tell them my real name. If I did, word of where I was could spread, and the Empresses would come after me. I had to think of something—fast.“I’m a friend of the Alpha.”“You don’t look very familiar,” said the soldier with chestnut-brown hair, eyeing me from head to toe.“I advise you to go inform the Alpha that a visitor is here to see him,” I said, sounding more confident than I felt. “I don’t think he would take it lightly if I’m kept waiting.”The soldier nodded to the dark-skinned man beside him, and the man turned to go find the Alpha.I didn’t think the Alpha knew what I looked like; the only time I’d visited this pack, I’d been inside a carriage, and I doubted the curtain had revealed much. But the Luna—she must know

ALIYAH’S POVAsh was covered in sweat, his body trembling. The infection had spread throughout his arm, dark green veins crawling beneath his skin.Another cry of pain tore from his lips.“I’m sorry,” I whispered, my voice breaking as I wiped his forehead with a wet towel. The warlock, Sebastian, had tried everything—every spell, every remedy he could think of—but nothing had worked. The injury was unlike anything we’d seen before, and we’ve had no luck finding demons.Bruce had gone back to the place where Daemon and I had lived, only to return with the grim news that the location had been reduced to ashes. For a moment, fear gripped me, the thought that those hunting Daemon had finally caught up with him. But the warlock, Sebastian, remained convinced that Daemon was still out there somewhere. The question was: where? For now, there was nothing we could do for Ash other than prepare for the worst. Amputating the arm had become the only viable option. Sebastian had to perform the pro

Daemon appeared out of nowhere, his gaze sweeping over the approaching swarm of flesh-eaters.“Perhaps I just saved the day.” He gripped both of us, and in the blink of an eye, we were gone.He stopped at the pack’s borders. He hadn’t been able to travel this far the last time, and the only explanation for that was that he had fed on someone.“Where is Cynthia?” I asked, my voice barely recognizable. “I warned you—I told you the only one who gets to kill her is me.”“Of course, and that’s why she’s waiting in the dungeons. You’re welcome by the way.”“You didn’t stick to the plan,” Alexander said, his voice calm but sharp.“But I came back.”“Yeah, that’s what’s surprising,” Alexander replied, his gaze narrowing. “Why? You must’ve figured out the girl was never in the castle. You didn’t have to save us, yet you did.”“We made a deal, and I’m a man of my word—well, I try to be.” Daemon said with a small smirk, but I could still see the disappointment in his eyes. We hadn’t brought back
