Lily POV
That name rang a bell, a loud one. But it was just a pinch in my memory, where I had heard that name stayed hidden in my memory. “What the hell? Why is he calling me all of a sudden?” he muttered to himself as he stared at the phone, finding it hard to make a choice . William was nervous and just as much irritated. Whoever was on the other end of the phone must have tried to wrangle his last nerve. He stood up to take the call and left the living room. I would have hoped it was business getting him so worked up. I have never seen him so pissed off. However, my mind derailed into what was more important. The headline! I grabbed my phone and began to scroll through social media. Damnit! They were everywhere. Every major blog, bulletin and news site has the same headline. Whoever was leaking this wanted everyone to know. And boy, they painted me in no clean light. “Famous billionaire mogul settles down with a stripper and a single mother.” Mind you, the titles were kept in all caps just to stress it. As if that wasn't all, they were the comments. Jealous fans who probably had expected him to settle down with one of those popular models flocked to their keyboard spilling their hatred. “That gold digger trash.” “Why would he let such a dirty woman seduce him?” “Someone get that whore out of there!” They were a lot to read, each one more relatable and hurtful than the other. I wished I hadn't even gotten myself mixed up in the whole drama in the first place. If only I had put a tape on my desires, If only I hadn't filled my head with fantasies which could never come to pass. I couldn't believe I thought me and this man would ever workout. The things I would have to deal with. Now the whole of social media is on my neck. I heard a set of footsteps as they stopped down the stairs. It was no regular walk. Whoever it was probably had a load of trouble and was in search of where to keep it. “William!” I heard someone scream. I had stayed with her long enough to know that it belonged to Aria. She hurried down the stairs in a fit like she was being chased. “William!” She screamed again and by this time she was in the living room. William rushed in, thinking it was an emergency. I, too, had jumped to my feet wanting to find out what was going on. Everyone else went down, and soon the entire house was congregated in the living room. “I thought I warned you not to bring this prostitute into this house. Have you seen the disgrace she has brought to this household?” The words broke me. At that point, everyone was against me. They looked ready to devour me. “What the hell are you talking about?” William challenged her. “If you need a decent girl to keep down as a wife, I have a ton of recommendations. Beautiful, prestigious women who would fit your status quo. You don't just go out into the streets and drag this piece of garbage and her son in here.” I wished for support but no one stood up for me. Not even Sarah, who had been acting all caring just a few minutes ago. Truly, they were all wolves in sheep's clothing. Their mother cleared her throat and everywhere went silent. She has so much authority in the home. Being that she was the only one who had agreed to hug me when I had first arrived, I thought I was going to get in her good books. “I don't like what I am seeing, William! Why is your wife bringing trouble to the company? Our investors are threatening to pull out if we don't clear up this scandal just in time.” I could feel Aria's eyes burn into me as she turned to face me. She turned to her mother. “Mom, it's high time we kicked this woman out of here before she drags us down with her. Do you want your rivals to laugh at us?” I stomached it all. It was not an easy crunch, but I took the insults and jives like a champ. I had no choice. This was my only chance to give my son as well as myself a good life. Especially my son. He would have the best of healthcare. I wasn't going to jeopardize that over the remarks of a spoiled brat who didn't know the first thing about suffering. “No one is leaving!” William said with a note of finality. He turned to Aria. “I thought I told you to stop belittling my wife. You had better apologize before you see your dark side.” “You want to beat me, William? You want to beat your sister because of a woman who is just working for you because of your money and fame?” She snorted. “You had better remember that day how you spoke to me because of this prostitute.” “Not another step, Aria!” Her mother obeyed and she obeyed. “I don't want any more of this. Damien will be coming back soon and I don't want him coming back to see whatever drama is going on between you two.” “Finally, a brother that will have my back when I need it,” Aria muttered, finally putting in a smile. “When will he get here?” “He's coming back?” William asked no one in particular. He is in no way concurring with his sister's excitement. He was particularly angry. Someone ought to fill me in here because I am lost. Who is this Damien and why is he freaking William out as well as evoking not so friendly memories from me? “Yes, William. Your brother is stopping by for the holidays and I expect that you accord him respect,” his mother scolded. William scoffed. “I can't believe you're going to let that monster back here after all he had done. The sooner you keep letting that boy off, the more he's going to become causing serious problems.” His mother retorted. “Well, what don't you tell him when you see him at the wedding!”Lily POV As soon as the room was clear of everyone except me and William, I sank to one of the cushions. My head was throbbing, edging to rip apart any second. “You should have told me your family was like this!” I muttered weakly. Don't get me wrong, I know right people can be like assholes a lot. I should have known that since I had the opportunity of being in the company of a lot of them who came around the club. But the least he could have given was a heads-up. He had spoken so calmly, I was reassured. It was a successful transaction but no one has said they would be the ”annoying sister who wants to throw you out of the house“ clause in our contract. “I would expect them to accord you with a lot of respect. I will speak to my sister!” He said as if he was taking a mental note. “This behavior is not to be condoned.” Believe me I understand that it was happening so fast. Their brother shows up with a wife and a step son out of the blues. I would be freaked out as we
Damien POVI walked around in my living room, pacing from end to end. My friend was seated on the sofa staring at me, tapping his foot on the floor. “Could you stop already? You're pissing me off with your leg tapping,” I yelled at Lyon. “Ay, man. How can I not get nervous when you're acting like the world is about to end. Seriously, your pacing is freaking me out.” Well, I can't blame him. Me being nervous was something that rarely happened. Besides, Lyon had no idea about what was going on. He looked clueless. I called him over as soon as the news got to me. As always, he showed up like the loyal friend he was. Usually, I would pop open a drink, and we would discuss work, life and the women who had been with us the previous night at the club. But this was not one of those days. There were more pressing issues at hand. “My brother is getting married, man!” I had expected Lyon to scream or match my restlessness, but he stood up and walked to the mini-bar. He grabbed a drink an
Damien POV Well, they were two truths and a lie. So far, I have been responsible. So far, I had been discreet enough not to get caught. Since my father's death, I have always tried to appear responsible for my mother and the rest of the family. They needed to be impressed if I was looking to capture their hearts. In truth, I hadn't been responsible one bit. I had only acted that way, so I could get into everyone's good books. I had completely erased my presence from clubs, but that didn't mean that I had stopped partying. The family house had been a confinement. That's why I moved out to a house of mine as soon as I had gotten married to have my privacy. Yea, I am married. But that doesn't mean that the fun I used to have as a bachelor became limited. More on that later. Under my wife's nose I still carried on with my frivolous lifestyle. While she was out at work, I would be back home with strippers and Lyon partying and turning the house into our private clubhouse. T
Damien POV Sarah returned home at a time that Lyon had gone home. Today wasn't one of those days that I would spend clubbing. I had a more important matter on my hands and the best mood I could be was to be sober. I was seated in the living room occasionally helping myself to a can of beer I had opened. Surely one can of beer was not enough to get me wasted. Okay you caught me! Three so far. It was enough to help me get through the tension of waiting for her to return. Today was the next checkup session the doctor had given us. It was the one where he would give us the way forward and I couldn't wait. Sarah took too long to freshen up but by the time she was done, I was already unto my fourth can of beer. By this time, I was dizzy but still agile and active and ready to receive whatever news they had in store for me. It was a long and quiet drive to the doctor. It felt long because we neither spoke or touched each other. Even the jazz I had asked the driver to put in the backgrou
Lily POV Life in the Carter mansion was everything and nothing I had hoped it would be. It was like living in a prison with luscious bessa and all you could want. The only thing you could and should look out for was the guards who wanted nothing more than to kick you out. The good part isn't overwhelm the dark bit that didn't mean it wasn't the reason my agreeing to this experience worthwhile. Let's begin from the mansion. Where to begin! It was huge. I had not seen or been anywhere somewhere as magnificent as this until a few days ago when William had held my shaky hand and led me in here. Down to the neighborhood, it was no place for a classless stripper and single mother like myself. That is not me being hard on myself. It was me telling the truth. What was even more pressing was the fact that I didn't choose this path. Everyday I stare at the mirror, all I see is the scar from all those years ago. The rough, untendered fingers of the man who had ruined my life all those year
Lily POV I would think the day of your wedding was supposed to be the most joyous day of one's life. The thought of walking down the aisle was meant to give a young woman like me goosebumps, make me smile wistfully. But when people who you honor as your in-laws turn out to be the ones who defeat you the most, all you can hope for is for the clock to tick by fast and hard. This was my case. I was a scared little ship fighting for survival in a town run by wolves. The more I tried to blend in, the more it was pointed out to me that I didn't belong one bit. Today is an example. I'm meant to follow the women out to shop. My mother in law came along and spiteful sister in law Aria who was blessed with a cannon of sleuth and was not in the least shy to launch off whenever and however she wanted. I believe you'll recognise that trait as rich… scratch that, wealthy people's privileges. It was a long day and I could tell. I had not gotten any itinerary so I had decided to throw on my most
Lily POV My palms were getting sweaty. I was nervous as I watched him approach. He had better chose his heavy roads carefully or I would have to force him down his throat. No one has known about my identity just yet. I mean they had known me to be a poor girl with big dreams to snatch the heart of their brother but they had no knowledge of me being a hooker. I immediately turned to the nearest shelf as if something had picked my attention. If he noticed me, that would be the end of me and I would destroy whatever credibility was left between me and them. I hid behind a pile of goods on a shelf and eavesdropped on what they discussed. “Well, I thought I saw someone I knew,” he muttered to himself as she walked toward my in-laws. Then they had formal introductions. He was a wealthy gold miner out the east. I usually didn't remember my customers but he had spent a lot that night. “What brings you here?” He asked Mrs Carter. “I'm here to get my daughter in law a phone,” she turned
Lily POVThe alarm blared at seven in the morning. But I had beat it already. I was already wide-eyed staring at the ceiling wondering a thousand ways that the day could go. The wedding bells had already gone off and the town was in a spiral. The wealthy child of the Carter family was getting married and everyone was interested in who, how l, and why all of a sudden. The picture which has been released has done a good job of keeping everyone on their toes. A lot of rumors were flying around and no one knew what to believe. Today there will be clarification. This was supposed to be one of the happiest days of my life. And yet I could barely find a reason to get up from the bed. My entire body was sore from overseeing all the affairs yesterday. Today, I was going to be married. My parents, their soul easy in peace, would have surely been excited. If not for anything, I had to be strong for them. I had always imagined this day to be filled with glitter and smiles. But I was barely e
CHAPTER FIFTY-THREEDamien’s POVI love when I set out to do one evil deed and a free opportunity to do more presents itself. I came today with no plan; all I wanted was to disturb Will’s peace a little, remind him I am still alive, and maybe remind Aria that she said she would help me inherit the company. But then heaven blessed me, and I found August outside. The boy had run to me, calling me daddy. I watched in amusement as he hugged my legs, giggling, then looked up and frowned.“You are not my daddy,” he said, puzzled.“No, I am not,” I replied with a sly smile.August giggled again. “But you look so much like him. I thought you were him.”“No,” I said, shaking my head. “But,” I continued “We are brothers.”I was amused that Lily’s son called Will's father. Lily sure knows how to make people take responsibility for things they did and did not do, just like she made me pay for... our incident. Now, she has Will playing daddy for August and her so-called unborn child, whom we are
CHAPTER FIFTY-TWOLily’s POVWill and I had successfully avoided work for an entire week, and Aria had been planning creative ways to kill me. But with Will always on my mind, I found it hard to care. Will thought I didn’t know what he was doing when he ‘accidentally’ locked my room door and lost the key, or when the maid ‘mistakenly’ dropped my laundry in his room. I didn’t say anything about it. I liked it. I liked to pretend I wanted my room, but if Will ever asked me to go to my room, I would die. Literally, I would fall and die.It was 10:32 AM on a Sunday, and August was free today. Will had his therapy session canceled so we could all go out as a family.I gently disentangled myself from Will’s body and quietly climbed down from the bed. I threw on one of Will’s shirts because I was too lazy to go to my room or find my clothes in his second drawer.Tying my hair into a messy bun, I walked out of the room to spend a little time with August alone, something that was hardly possib
CHAPTER FIFTY-ONEWill’s POVI don’t blame Aria for hating Lily. She is right. Lily is good for me.Should I be dressed and ready to go to work? Yes.Do I need to go to work? Yes.Am I dressed and ready to go to work? No.Will I go? Hell no!I had called Toby again to tell him I wasn't going to make it to work. My excuse? I’m sick. Was I sick? No, but I would be if I didn’t taste Lily one more time. Lily had excused herself to go back to her room to get dressed. I’ll have to get her things brought here, or if she likes her room so much, I can move to it. It doesn’t matter, but all this separate room nonsense is not going to work.“You’re not dressed?” Lily asked, barging into my room to pick up clothes she left in my bedroom.“No,” I said, grinning.“What?” She asked, stopping to look at me. “Why are you staring at me like that?”“I like the way you entered my room like it’s yours.”Nothing can replace the pleasure of seeing Lily blush as she quickly disappeared into the bathroom to p
CHAPTER FIFTYLily POVIt was Monday morning, and I woke up to small kisses being trailed along my neck. I groaned and sank deeper into the feel of Will.It is Monday morning and after what could only be described as the best weekend in history, I do not want to wake up let alone go to work.“Open your eyes, Lily,” Will growled. “I know you are awake.”I did not open my eyes. I did not want to open my eyes. Maybe if I keep my eyes closed long enough, I would be able to keep him here in bed with me throughout the day.“Can we not just stay?” I groaned.“Of course we can, we can stay as long as you want but that would only give Aria more reasons to hate you and make the papara—Will didn’t get any other words out as I brought my lips to his kissing him gently. Will sighed into the kiss and wrapped his arms around my back and my neck drawing me deeper in. God, I’d missed this—it had only been hours, but I missed it already. I missed feeling like we were both going to lose it if we did no
Damien’s POV“You foolish man, I thought getting drunk was my thing,” Lyon said. He had been scolding me and telling me things I did not care for.He is right though, getting excessively drunk is his thing, not mine. He was leading me to the car so we could go home I suppose.“I do not want to go home.” I slur.“I am sure. Your wife will kill you if you go home like this.” Lyon said and laughed loudly. “I thought you said you were a changed man? Change my ass man.”“Oh shut the fuck up.”Lyon laughed again and retrieved the car key from my pocket.“shit.” He cursed. “You have to stand on your own, wait while I go get the key, I think you left it on the table we used.”Immediately Lyon left me I fell flat on my butt drawing unwanted attention and Lyon's unwarranted laugh. He left me there struggling with no success to get back on my feet. He came back a minute later with the key. “Remind me to never let you drink this much ever again,” he said helping me into the car.“Fuckkk-you,” I sa
Lily's POVOne day, I would rip out my heart and throw it away. It had made it its life mission to always embarrass me when it came to William Carter. I couldn't even pretend to act cool and composed around him, especially when I was this close to him. The only thing giving me comfort was the fact that our heartbeats were synchronized, and I could hear his heart too.He was sniffing my neck, nuzzling his nose against it, and gently running his hand from my neck to my waist consistently. I wondered why. Before, when he was just a client, he would quickly go straight to the point. He made sure I was comfortable first, yes, but there was hardly any cuddling or sniffing.“You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do this,” he said.“Sniff me?” I had long ditched the thought that I would have any composure or class when it came to Will. My voice sounded like I was struggling to breathe, let alone talk, and that couldn’t be closer to the truth. Will chuckled. His voice was low, lower than us
Unknown POVWhoever said, "If you want something done perfectly, do it yourself," is a genius. It's been weeks since I told that idiot Greg to handle the matter of that new wife, and he's probably dead or avoiding me. He better be dead, because if I ever learn he's still breathing, I'll kill him myself.I took another deep inhale from my cigarette and puffed it out. I had considered killing Will's driver and taking his place, but that would make the death very traceable to me, especially considering the fact that William is obsessed with his new wife.I stood by the side outside William's house and waited. I liked to come here, to this house, and stand outside to catch glimpses of the kind of life William and his other family members lived. The kind of life my mother and I never got. I watched the news carefully when I learned that Carter was dead, waiting to see my name or at least that of my mother. I should have expected to see nothing. I should also not have been surprised when he
Damien’s POV“I need to talk to you,” I said as I barged into his office. It was just as I remembered from the last time I was here a few months ago. He didn’t let me into his office often; he treated it like a sanctuary. It was decorated with awards and medals dating back to his childhood. Father had always been a winner—in class, in sports, debates, bets, business—he always won. He was not accustomed to the word failure. William had followed in his footsteps. Those two were the boring, nerdy bookworms nobody liked. But they won in everything; they were organized, neat, handsome, tall, and strong, commanding rooms filled with people. They were the all-work-no-play types people liked to describe in romance novels.I was not like that. I was the fun, smiling, disorganized, cool one everybody liked. At least, everybody liked me when I was younger, but ever since I came back from college months ago, everyone expected me to be who I was not. They expected me to be my father or William, an
CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE Lily’s POV Nancy was still begging to keep her job when the lights in the company went out, sending the whole place into chaos. Toby had security escort Nancy outside of the building while Will led me to his office. I sat quietly, feeling useless while everyone else in the company got busy. Virtual meetings had been cut off, and numerous computers were down, causing disruption of work and weakening security. Everyone was working to figure out what had happened and to get the electricity back up. Will kept answering call after call, addressing people’s concerns about their interrupted meetings and reassuring them that everything was all right and that it was just a minor electrical issue. “No, your money is not at risk. No, this isn't someone causing a distraction to steal from you. No, the company is not closing without public consent. Yes, it is just a minor issue that will be resolved shortly. No, I have not sold the company without informing shareholders
