The door to my room is pushed open and Leah saunters in. Her gaze sweeps through the crumpled space and her nose lifts in disgust.
I scan her appearance through the cracked vanity mirror.
When she turns to look at me, she has a smile on her face, one that I wouldn't mistake as friendly.
“ I came to see if you needed anything. After all, today is your special day." Leah says, her smile not dropping. I can hear the mockery and disdain well concealed in her words though but I ignore it.
I am already used to it after all these years.
“ Thanks for your concern but I don't need anything." I reply, straightening my unruly hair.
Leah chuckles from behind me.
“ Don't get me wrong, Alora. I am not concerned about you. I just want to make sure that you don't embarrass our family out there.”
Her words don't faze me anymore. I know for a fact no one cares about me. Their reputation and family name is more important than I could ever be.
“ Don't worry. I will behave myself and not stain the family name." I reply,my voice laced with mockery. That doesn't sit well with Leah who glares at me.
“ Don't stop to think that I don't know you have feelings for my mate, Alora. Let me not see you hovering near him.” Leah warns before strolling out of the room.
***
I take a deep breath and calm my nerves as I approach the hall where the party is already in motion.
I remember my mother's words before I left the house and a bitter smile paints my lips.
“ Don't come back tonight without a man. I don't care how yóu do it. Seduce one if that's what it takes to find a mate. After all, that's what you strive best at."
Those words stabbed me straight into my heart. You would expect a mother to say something nice to her daughter, well, not my mother.
I can't remember the làst time I heard something kind from her.
“ The Lycan king of Alistair is attending the party tonight. I don't know why he is here so you must behave and not create trouble for us." Those were my father's words to me. In other words, I was supposed to do everything to please the said Lycan king ànd probably gain his favor.
I was however not interested in socializing or finding a chosen mate.
I was bidding for my time to make my escape.
To avoid any suspicion, I will be leaving with nothing except the few dollars stashed insíde my bra. Since I don't have a wolf or a distinct scent, it will be easy to escape without being tracked down. That is, if I manage to bypass the patrol warriors stationed at the pack border.
With one last breath, I step insíde the hall. I almost trip on my dress but manage to hold myself back. Stupid heels. My mother forced me to wear them tonight, discarding my comfy doll shoes. I don't know how she expected me to walk in them when I have never worn heels before.
I make sure to take calculated steps. The last thing I want is landing on my butt and doing exactly what I was forbade; embarrassing my parents.
My eyes scan the room. Although tonight was my mate selection party, every unmated female in my pack and the neighbouring packs was invited.
With so many beautiful and outstanding ladies, I doubt anyone would notice me which is a good thing to me. I don't have the energy to engage in little chit chats. I don't even know if I can hold one without embarrassing myself. I hardly attend any social gathering in or outside the pack. My parents don't let me, not like I would love to attend either. Anything to hold my peace and quiet.
I make my way to the makeshift bar at the end of the hall ànd order myself a fruit juice.
“ Hey beautiful?" I am about to sip my juice when a gruff voice sounds too close to me. I take a step away, turning around to acknowledge the person.
I am greeted by a familiar old face leering at me with lustful eyes. I cringe in disgust.
Alpha Leo. He is one of my father's close friends and a fucking asshole. Something about how the man looks at me everytime he visits the pack makes my insides crawl with disgust. What is he even doing here tonight?
Oh,I forgot. The man is now mateless after his last mate died giving birth to his child a year ago.
Rumors say that the man is ruthless and abusive to his mates. I can't count the number of times he has had a new mate over the years.
“ Alpha Leo." I say, trying not to gag in disgust from the smell of alcohol lingering in his body.
“ Why are yóu drinking juice,my dear? It's your night, let's have a drink together." He draws the words, motioning the bartender to pour him a drink.
" No, thanks. I am fine.” I politely decline him but I should have known that the man doesn't understand or stomach being refused.
“ It's not a request,my dear Alora. You are going to drink with me." He says, shoving a glass to me.
I am about to refuse when a familiar voice resounds in my ears.
" What is going on here?”
I turn around and come face to face with Leah who is practically glued on Lucas.
" Miss Leah, your stupid sister here doesn't respect me and won't agree to toast with me.” Alpha Leo whines and I fight the urge to roll my eyes.
“ Alora, you should be grateful someone like Alpha Leo is interested in you considering your low rank." Leah sighs dramatically.
I ball my hands into a fist. I turn to look at Lucas who is staring at me quietly.
“ Don't you think, Lucas?" Leah asks, drawing Lucas' attention to her.
Lucas looks away, seemingly not interested to give a reply.
“ Let's do this? Take my drink," Leah says, stuffing the amber coloured drink in my hands.
“ It's not as strong as what Alpha Leo is offering if you are afraid of getting drunk.” Leah adds with a smile.
I narrow my gaze at her suspiciously.
Leah rolls her eyes at me.
“ Do you seriously think I would offer you a spiked drink?" She asks and my insides scream yes. She can do that or even worse.
I catch a glimpse of the time on the wall clock and realize that it's about time I take my chance or I wouldn't be able to leave later.
Against my better judgement, I empty the drink before excusing myself.
I start making my way to the guest quarters where I know few guards will be patrolling at this time.
I don't make it far when my body starts heating up,an uncomfortable feeling creeping from the depths of my stomach.
I take deep breaths and curse when a rather familiar feeling washes over me.
“ No,not again. My heat just ended today." I mumble as I start hastening my steps. My eyes start failing me, dizziness washing through me.
I contemplate turning around and rushing to my room but I Know I won't make it so far without attracting unnecessary attention.
With so many unmated males at the party, there's no saying what will become of me if they come across a female in heat.
I press myself to keep walking until in my dazed state, I crash into something solid.
“ Easy there, little one." The person says with an animalistic growl. On normal days, that would whisper danger to me ànd have me fleeing but not tonight. There's nothing normal about me nor the intoxicating scent that hits my senses, making me moan in delight.
“ Help me. Please help me." Those are the last words I utter consciously.
When I regain my senses, I moan in appreciation from how suddenly soft my mattress is. The next moment, I snap my eyes open and look besides me only to come face to face with the most sea blue eyes I have ever seen.
“ You are awake." A musky voice registers in my confused mind.
I jerk up only to wince a second later when pain shoots from my lower region.
My eyes widen in surprise when the realization finally kicks in.
“ Last night…” I trail off, unable to form any coherent words.
“ You were drugged." I am not surprised by his reply. Why did I think I could trust Leah to not scheme against me?
“ I'm sorry for causing yóu trouble." I mumble before slowly trying to get out of bed only to be stopped by a grip on my wrist.
“ That's it? That's all you have to say to me?" The man growls, his blue orbs flickering dark.
I nearly jump in fright but hold myself together.
“ What do you want? I don't have anything to offer you ànd…”
" Marry me.” He cuts me off leaving my mouth hanging open.
Alonso POVI am brooding over a document my beta gave to me the previous day when I hear a timid knock on the door. The knock jolts me from my thoughts and I am not even aware when I let out an angry growl and knock over the glass cup of water on my table, and I watch as the glass hits the ground and shatters everywhere as if to equate my anger. The documents I was studying before the knock came are the documents of territory land ownership from the Young Moon pack. We have been having a lot of back on forth because of the ownership topic, so when the impromptu knock comes, my beast goes mad“Who dares to knock on my door!?” I spit, my voice filling with venom as I fumes“Good … good day …Alpha Alonso,” comes a stammering, scared, feminine voice from behind the door“What do you want!” I walk furiously to the door and fling it open. Standing behind the door is a timid servant girl dressed in the usual palace servant uniform. I instantly remember that she is the new maid I employed a f
Soon we are in the car for the long drive to the Midnight pack. When the car starts slowing down, I look out of the window and I can tell that we are almost at our destination. I start drumming on the seat anxiously and I catch Beta Leo staring at me. Although he is quiet I can tell that there are a lot of things you want to say. But thank the goddess he is not talking, the last thing I need is for anyone to talk around me. He still sits in silence even though he knows that we have gotten to our destination. Maybe he is silent because he is not ready to face me or he can sense my simmering discomfortI decide to stare out of the window instead. The pack house is beautiful. Decorated everywhere was different colours of light to add to the celebration. The car stops in front of the pack house and a service man rushes to usher me in with a bow. “Welcome how far Alonso of the Alistair Kingdom,” he says as he ushers me and Leo inI mutter a small, “Thank you,” as I take my steps behind him
Leah’s POV“Announcing the arrival of Alpha…”I roll my eyes immediately when I hear the title Alpha. A lot of dignitaries are here and they are either Alphas, Betas or their entourage. I am tired of see boring people parade in with false bravado as the announcer screams their names in the microphone“Alpha Alonso, the King of the Alistair Kingdom…”My eyes shoot open as I hear the Kingdom. King Alonso!? I have been waiting all night for his arrival. So why did the announcer address him as Alpha instead of King? This is one common mistake a lot of pack members make- addressing the Lycan King as Alpha. I hear even the Lycams make this same mistake often and this irritates me every timeOh well, that aside- the King is hereOh my goddess, my wolf is so excited. She is yelping so much. What if I get mated to the Lycan king. My father would be so proud of me. If our pack comes in alliance with the Alistair Kingdom, we would be the greatest pack ever and I would even get to be his queen.
Alonso’s POVMy patience is running dangerously thin. I have endured enough of this insufferable evening. The crowd is suffocating, the girls are suffocating, the smell of desperation is everywhere in the air. My beast is agitating already and if I don't take care it would start controlling me. I am frustrated. My eyes scan the ground hall frantically.I am practically searching for a new hiding spot. Anywhere dark, anywhere quiet, anywhere that is far away from the relentless voices and the wandering eyes of the hungry girls around here. I move swiftly but carefully in the crowd. I try to avoid any girl coming close to me. I can still feel the eyes of the other girl that I had shunned boring into me like she is going to kill me at any moment. Then suddenly, something- no, someone- collides into me with a thud like they are not looking at where they are going. I make a low growl, distinctively my fangs came out too. Then I look down to see a young woman almost crumbling at my feetHer
“King Alonso,” one of the two bulky looking guards is in my front with a stern face. I let out a low growl at their approach, and I match their energy with my own firm authority“We need to ask you a few questions,” he continues, his eyes darting between mine and the body of the girl in my hands“I'm in a hurry, so be quick,” I snarled“Fine, fine,” the first guard steps aside for the other to continue“Who is the girl, why is she unconscious and alone with you?” the second guard is speaking as he keeps looking at Alora’s weak body.I feel my beast snarl, but I control it almost immediately. “She was drugged at your Alpha's ball. I found her unconscious and I want to make sure that she is safe”The guards exchanged suspicious looks between each other before the gaze of the second landed on me in scrutiny. “How can you prove to me that she was drugged?”“Can't you see how she looks like? Can't you see that her breathing is raspy and she needs help?”“Did you drug her?” he dares to ask
Beta Leo hesitates for a while, but when he sees that I am serious he steps out with a grumble, leaving me alone with the omegaI sit beside her on the bed, watching as she turns around on the bed. Then her eyes begin to flutter, her face starts to move slightly before her eyes open up softly. That is when I really get to see them. Her iris arebrown, warm but filled with confusion and struggle“You are awake,” I say with a soft voice and I am confused if I should sound that soft with her since we have no relationship with each otherShe jerks up suddenly as if she finally understood that she was not familiar with me or the environment she was in. She winces too, her hands flying to her abdomen“Careful,” I mutter, moving closer to her as her eyes darts around wildly - meeting mine and flicking around the room“Who are you? Where am I ? What do you want ? Please don't hurt me!” her words are rushed“What? No!” I am suddenly defensive. I never thought of what to do if she wakes up and
I am shocked when I discover that the man in front of me is King Alonso, but I don't show it. I don't want to act impress for some reasons, especially not when he just sees me as something he can use. Yes, that is what I call it. Why does he not want to tell me the real reason why a king would settle for an omega? His request is unsettling in my stomach. His offer is juicy. His Kingdom is greater than my father's territory, so it would be possible that he protects me. It is understandable on my own side why I would want to marry him, but why would he want to marry me? What would people say? What would he tell his people? What reason would he give them that he married an omega- the weakest of the pack?I stay motionless on the bed as I watch the overshadowing man on his back on me, picking up his phone. I am relieved a little when his attention is no longer on me, but still I am not comfortable. Is deep voice feels the air as he talks to the other person on the phone“What is it, Leo?
I lay on the bed staring straight at the white ceiling. I am lost in confusion and I feel so much despair. Suddenly I feel my stomach growling- it is sharp and painful. I remember that I have not eaten since… I can't even remember now. I feel the ache in my stomach grow more and more, but I don't even have the energy to move. I feel so weak nowI shift uncomfortably on the bed, my hand is feeling around the bed to find my purse. But then I realise almost immediately- my purse- I don't think I have seen it since I woke up. My purse has my money in it and I think it is gone!My money is gone. I have saved it up for months in a hole I had dug in my room. It had not been easy since I rarely got any money of my own, but I started running small errands for the big girls in school - that is how I got money to save up. I have been stashing up every coin I could, planning my escape from the pack. All gone now, like it's air from cigar slipping out of my lipsI feel my body shutting down in dis
“Okay… that is Enough!" Agatha pulls something from her coat – a black amulet that looks strange. "Let us stop this!” she screams before she turns to AloraYou leave me no choice.""Oh please, shut up, mother," Alora says. "You just consistently make the wrong choices."She raised both hands, and the earth beneath us begins to tremble. Cracks appears in the ground, spreading outward from where she levitats. White energy crackles around her like lightning."Hold her!" Agatha commanded, but even she took a step back. Something was wrong. Very wrong.Alora's body begins to convulse, her eyes rolling back until only the whites showed."What's happening?" Emma whispers behind me, clutching my mother's arm. I want to tell her everything would be okay, but I cannot find my voice.“Just stay away…” I say instead. “Run away… follow mother!” I talk to her with a sense of haste and panic“No I cannot leave you here, brother Lucas…” she breaks down crying“Go… go!” I urge in urgency“No! I will n
At first, Alora bursts out of the car runningStop her!" Agatha's commands. Two of Darren's men lunge for her, but she is a bit fast dodging them severally when they try to catch her. For a moment, I think she might make it. Then three more guards appeared before she knows it, she is caught."No!" she screams as they drag her. "Let me go!" she struggles. Then seeing that her struggles are futile, she understand the severity situation and she begins begging"Please," Alora whimpers as they drag her. "Please don't do this." Her voice is getting smaller and smaller. She keeps looking at me with tears in her face “Lucas, please..." she begs anything and anyoneI turn away. I couldn't bear to see her like this- plus I also have my own problem- I don't know what Agatha is planning to do to me and my familyran."Bring her here," Agatha commanded, pointing at the spot in front of her. "And this time, make sure she can't run."They dragged her back, her feet leaving trails in the dirt as sh
"Why should I believe you?" She finally says, her voice trembling slightly. "You handed me over to them before! You are confusing me! Are you for me or against me!”“Alora! This is not the time! I will explain later!” I put out my hands in an extension to her, but she doesn't take them- instead she takes a few steps back, she is scared of me now and it stings at my heart"I'm trying to help you now," I say, my voice low and urgent.“I don't need your help!” she almost screams, but she immediately remembers where we are“Please…” I plead silently but urgently. I reach out, my hand almost touching her arm, but she raises the stick up as if to show that he would attack me. "Trust me, just this once."Her eyes soften, then it hardens, then softens again. She opens her mouth as if to speak, closes it, opens it again. I can see that she is having an internal conflict- asking herself if she should trust me. She takes half a step toward me, stops, retreats. The bends -lowers an inch, then ris
The moment Agatha's ultimatum pierces my ears, I know I have to find a way out. My sister Emma's terrified eyes doesn't leave me even as they drag her back into the car. Her silent plea for rescue is louder than even if she screams- I would have preferred she screams rather than remain quiet and give me those eyes that make guilt gnaw at me. Agatha's cruel grip on my family has always been suffocating, but now she has crossed a line that I am willing to fight against. I need to be a man and do what is right. As soon as the dizziness passes, I'm moving. One moment, I want to help Alora, the next I'll do anything to save my family. The shock of the blow quickly transforms into determination. I can hear Alora's footsteps as she escapes. I know what's at stake- it is either her or EmmaI am reminded about Agatha’s threat to Emma. One mistake, and my sister pays the price. I am so confused right now. I feel so much like a loser. I cannot protect my family and I cannot protect the one I cla
The taste of blood? Oh please, I am used to it by now. Darren's men still hold me down against the forest floor. Blood and dirt mixed in my mouth, but that doesn't even bother me one bit. My attention is fixed on Luna Agatha as she approaches the invisible barrier where the cabin stands. Her black dress seems to make her more evil, and I fight back a shudder as she reaches out to touch the protection spells."Such clever magic," she murmurs, her fingers almost going through the air where the barrier shines faintly. "An old protection spell. Your father taught you well, Lucas. But not well enough. Or perhaps you are not worthy enough"My heart stops as she nods toward the black Mercedes. They open the car boot and I watch in horror as two guards drag Emma out. My sister's face is tear-stained and she is scared – she looks so much like our father that my chest aches because I cannot protect her now. I hate the Luna!"No!" I struggle harder against the hands holding me down. "She has no
Darren notices what I am trying to do. "Don't even think about it," he growls and so I don't move.“How come you watch seven alpha's die? I heard they died so young in war and you didn't even try to save them?”"Are you stupid?" I am getting the exact reaction I want to get from Darren- he is as angry as I want him to. "You're barely old enough to remember the last war, and you think you can speak to me about sacrifice and leadership!? Do you know what I had to sacrifice!?”I force a smirk even though I am calculating the places and corners to run and escape with. I also calculate how fast I can open the door, enter inside and relocate even though I know that after relocating I will be a rogue wolf forever because I will obviously be an enemy of the pack for going directly against the Alpha's orders and housing a wanted pack traitor, Alora- that is what the pack calls her now. I look at Darren and I like the way he is heaving in anger. "Seven Alphas died under your watch. That's not

Now I am watching Daren almost find Alora and if he is as good as he claims to be, Alora is in trouble because he would be able to sense hiding magic in the area. Alora would not be able to leave because Daren would stay there until she comes out. I want to relocate the house, but the house can only be relocated when I- the key holder and the descendant of the builder is in itThis makes me remember how during the war, we were stuck in the house for over a month because the soldier sensed hiding magic. Dad had not given anyone the power to relocate yet. So the soldiers stayed outside for more than one month waiting for us to come out from wherever we were hiding. Food and basic needs were not a problem because the house provided for us. But staying indoors for over a month was mentally stressful. Dad on the other hand kept watching us, until one day he decided to distract the soldiers. He kept trying for days until one day he succeeded. Immediately he got in, we relocated to another
"I want to accept it so badly. To let her take away the pain, to let her touch me so I can feel our energy one last time. But is it worth it? Agatha's warning signs in my ears like a bad omen. At that moment, Goth walks in with a slightly bent head, he avoids my gaze because of what Agatha had made him do. Of all the guards who hit me, Agatha had made him hit me the most. I hold no grudge against him yet- well until I understand what the stakes were for him to betray me like that. Was it money offered or threats made to him? From the looks of the things in the hall, it is the laterIn the night, they come for me again. This time, they brought videos of my mother's torture- they hold her hostage since they captured her. The message is clear- reject Alora, or watch everyone I love suffer. The next morning, I do the unthinkable."We need to talk," I tell Alora- I make my voice sound cold and strange. We stand in the empty corridor before the first period, my heart breaking with every
