I picked the card off the ground and stared at it. Several thoughts came to mind as I looked at it. I turned it over but his name wasn't on it. It was just his number.

For the rest of the way I pondered over the man and what he'd said. Suddenly his offer seemed like something I had to consider. He was clearly rich. If I married him, he'd help me pay for my muns surgery.

I felt conflicted. I wouldn't just be agreeing to a contract. I'd be selling myself out. Sacrificing my morals and my dignity. Especially after I'd told the man I'd never call him.

My room felt cold and empty that night. It seemed to feel my own inner emptiness and the thoughts battling within me. I turned and turned, unable to sleep.

Around midnight, I got up for a glass of water and I ended up picking up the card again. I knew I had to make a choice. My self pride or my mother's life.

My grip on the card tightened and I looked down at it. I bit my inner lip and closed my eyes before picking up my phone.

I dialed the number and waited for the call to be answered on the other end. The phone rang and rang but he didn't pick up. I tried it again but it was the same.

Perhaps he was sleeping. It was already late afterall.

I went to bed with a sense of determination. I'd do whatever it takes to save my mother.

Early the next morning, I called the number again and again and again, but there was still no answer. I didn’t know the mans name so there was no way I could track him or even go back to the hotel to look for him.

A few days passed, the deadline for my mother's surgery was fast approach and I still hadn't gotten hold of the man. I began to lose hope.

It was too good to be true, he'd probably just found it fun and decided to toy with me like that. I squeezed the card and them tossed it in the bin. It was time to return to the real world.

I began to think about Harry. Could he be the only option I'd have left? I thought about the humiliation I'd face from him. Was that really the only choice I had?

I still hadn't found a new job and what little I had in savings I'd spent on mums treatment. Two days before her scheduled surgery date, I came home from job hunting and I found a letter stuck to my door.

I took it and went inside. It was a notice from the landlord. Our rent was due and to make things worse, I no longer had the money to pay for it. The landlord wasn't a kind man. I'd seen him evict people just for being a few days late on rent.

The last thing I needed was to be homeless. I was about to call Harry when I saw a text from him.

Stop being stubborn. Just apologise and we can move last all this

The message angered me and I tossed my phone aside. I was sick and tired of men thinking they could play around with me. I went to my mums wardrobe searching for an old box that I'd seen her hide severally.

My father wasn't dead. Mum said he was a rich man but she never said anymore about him. I had a strong feeling that the key to finding him would be in that box.

I couldn't find any old pictures or even names. All I got was an address. I went online trying to narrow down who he could be but it was hopeless. Nothing was working.

For the first time, I broke down. Hot angry tears streamed down my face as I shook uncontrollably. All the pain and anger and sadness from the last couple of days resurfaced.

I didn't know what to do or who to turn to. I was completely alone. Completely alone.

I cried myself to sleep.

The next morning I went to the hospital to see mum again. She was still weak and she could barely speak but I had to try one last time.

“Mum… please tell me about my father. He can help, please”

“N-no… don't”

“I can't just sit back and watch you die. I'm going to find him”

“Honey no… you don't… understand”

“But mum”

“Promise… me. Don't search”

I couldn't go against her wishes so I agreed.

I stayed by her side the whole day. I didn't know how much longer I had with her. I didn't leave the hospital till late that night and I called a cab home.

I reached my apartment and went in. Before I could close the door, something pushed me back forcefully. I looked up, stunned. There were two men staring down at me. They looked like thugs.

“You have been a bad bad girl” One of them said

“Who are you people?”

“We're just here to get what you owe”

“But I want what you owe and more” The other man spoke, locking his lips as he stared down at me.

I tried to run but they pulled me back, slamming me onto the couch.

The one who'd been eye raping me came and sat next to me, stroking my hair. “A little birdie told us you haven't paid your rent. Why's that?”

My eyes widened as I realised my landlord had sent them. I'd always heard rumours that he was gang affiliated but this was my confirmation.

“I'll pay I swear but please just leave me alone” My voice was shaky, my heart pounding in my chest.

The man's hands trailed up my leg as he rubbed my thighs.

“No… please. Let me go!” I screamed as I struggled to break free of his hold. But he pinned me down further and climbed on top of me.

“Don't be a bitch. Just cooperate and we'll give you a little extra time to pay up” He smiled down at me as he toyed with my blouse.

“Lock the door, Jimmy” He motioned to his companion who had been observing with a dirty smirk. He moved to the door but before he could lock it, the door was kicked open and Jimmy was sent flying back.

Everything happened so fast. In one minute the man was dragged off me. I looked around and saw two other men in black suits beating up the thugs.

I was still struggling to understand what was happening when someone else strutted in through the door.

It was him.

After days of trying to reach him he'd finally showed up at my door to save me. “Are you hurt?” His rich voice cleared my thoughts as I stared at him, totally transfixed. I could muster up any words yet so I simply shook my head. “Come. These men will be taken care of” o didn't protest as he carried me in his arms and took me to his car. He set me down in the passenger seat and fixed my seat belt. I was still in shock. Still processing. The man drove for about a half hour and stopped in front of a grand mansion. He helped me out of the car and led me inside. I kept looking around. I'd thought Harry was rich but this man redefined the word. A small flicker of hope sparked within me. Maybe, just maybe I still had a chance to pay for mums surgery. The man took me to the living room and dropped me on the couch. A maid came soon after and offered me a glass of water. Anita felt suffocated by the demands in Nathan's household. Despite the mansion's wealth and size, every room felt cold and menacing. Eleanor's frosty glares, Stacy's covert barbs, and Harry's overt manipulations were regular reminders that she was not genuinely welcome in this environment. For the most part, Nathan kept his distance. He was still present, but their chats were brief and their exchanges mechanical. A contract. A business arrangement. That was what he had promised her, yet the space between them felt like an abyss. She couldn't help but wonder: was there more beneath the surface? Was Nathan's indifference a shield, or did it reflect his actual feelings? Her days were filled with the humdrum responsibilities that come with being the wife of a billionaire: attending galas, pretending to be interested in charity events, and dealing with Nathan's family's continual judgement. It was taxing, but Anita had learnt to excel in her profession. She appeared to be the ideal wife,

She was beginning to long for a more profound relationship with him, one that went beyond their transactional, icy relationship.Anita had a new perspective on him one evening when they went to a gala together. The ensuing days were a jumble of frigid silences and fleeting meetings. The tension between Anita and Nathan was obvious, heavy as a storm about to break. Each time their paths met, the weight of unspoken words hung heavy between them, and Anita's need for more—more from him, more from their marriage—grew stronger, chewing away. She had attempted to understand and adapt to his world, but now there was a sense of dread that made it difficult to breathe. But she wasn't only concerned about Nathan. Anita's thoughts concerning Harry got increasingly uncomfortable. He was a continuous thorn in her side, mocking her with innuendos and unrelenting attempts to influence her. He had made it apparent that he did not consider her a true member of the family, and the way he tried to irritate her put her on edge. What was his endgame?A week after the event, the first indication of anything very alarming appeared. Anita sat in her own study, reviewing some documents Nathan had given her c

As Nathan approached the door, his shadow against the hallway light, Anita stood in the darkened living room, breathing heavily. Her heart pounded more loudly, thumping with uncertainty, but the harsh sound of the doorbell continued to reverberate in her mind. Who might it be? There had been a delicate quiet between them, and who ventured to break it? However, Nathan seemed unsurprised. He wore a strained expression and clenched his jaw in a rigid line. He arched his shoulders slightly, as if he was bracing for something dreadful. Anita felt a flutter of worry that she couldn't identify. Perhaps it was because he hadn't appeared this stiff in a long time. It's probable she was aware of the instability in their relationship. With his back to her, Nathan whispered, "Stay here," and went for the door. His voice bore the weight of an unstated order despite being clipped, just above a whisper. He grabbed the door doorknob and yanked it open before Anita could react. She had hoped she wi

Standing at her elegant mahogany desk, Anita felt the weight of the power she suddenly possessed pressing down on her chest. The future would be shaped by every choice she made going forward. Standing upright in front of the board, she had already demonstrated her worth, but that was just the start. She was startled out of her daydream as her phone buzzed on the desk. When she noticed the caller ID, she paused her fingers as she reached for it. Daniel. This was what she had anticipated. Everything was silent. Too silent. As the last echoes of the explosion vanished into the darkness, Anita stood at the edge of the flaming debris, her body shaking. The structure that had once stood for Nathan's empire, his legacy, and his castle was now reduced to a charred skeleton of ash and twisted steel. She was unable to hear the distant cries of emergency sirens. Smoke spiralled into the sky like mourning veils, and all she could hear was the harsh, uneven sound of her own breath. He had returned for her. after which she was barred out. Her voice was hoarse from yelling his name, and her palms were scraped raw from beating on the sealed exit. He never did, however, open the door.Since he never meant to. She muttered, "Nathan," as though the wind might take her words back in time, past the debris and the fire, to the man who had given all up. Security, firefighters, and medical personnel moved around her, but she remained still. The edges of the world were blurred.

She was followed by the smoke. Smoke clung to her skin, her hair, and her thoughts even after the building collapsed, after the sirens screamed, and after a guard who was only devoted to Nathan pulled her from the turmoil. It felt like the world stopped. As Harry stood in front of them, his smile far too familiar and wide, Anita's pulse pounded in her chest. There was a dreadful feeling of déjà vu, like if the ghosts of her past had come back to haunt her, even though the gun was aimed directly at her heart.Nathan stepped between them, his weapon still raised but his full focus on the man who had once been family. "Harry," he growled, his voice low and menacing. "What the hell are you doing here?" A mocking smile twisted Harry's lips, and his eyes briefly shifted to Nathan before returning to Anita. Time was running out. With the storm outside roaring like war drums, Nathan stood in front of the glowing screens in the guarded control room of Grant Enterprises' exclusive headquarters. His fists clenched as he remembered her face from earlier, battered and smeared with tears. This was personal to the architect. They would now understand what it meant to jeopardise everything he held dear. Anita lingered silently across the room, gazing at the hostage film that had been halted. All of it weighed on her as if gravity had tripled. With a hollow voice, she finally whispered, "They're coming for us." "And nobody is leaving clean." Something delicate flickered behind Nathan's stony gaze as he turned to face her. "We'll. I swear to you, Anita. Nobody else has the right to harm you. She laughed, a weary laugh with a hint of bitterness. "I was born into a war, so
