Chapter 13

Stacy

Years of following my dad into these kinds of meetings had trained me to spot the boss from a mile away.

In this room filled with four stout men with smart tailored suits, I couldn’t find a single one with that quiet confidence that comes from knowing that everyone else in the room would jump at your command like the one Vincenzo has.

None of them even resembled a Clyde Cummiskey.

Vincenzo must know that too because he wasn’t being nice to any of the guys who were trying a little too hard to make him believe they were in charge. He simply brushed them off with curt nods and dismissive glances.

Well, even if Vincenzo doesn’t know it, I’d made my mind to avoid saying anything that would draw attention to me more than this damn collar and cuffs were already doing.

These men might as well carve out my captor’s eyes and hold it up in a stake for all I care.

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a guy leaning against the far wall, his gaze fixed on us with

I had always found a twisted sense of belonging in these places, a perverse comfort in the shadows. But not right now. Now, I was hunting.I moved through the narrow passage quietly, the scent of dampness clinging to the air, mingling with the acrid stench of gunpowder from the recent firefight. The bastard had escaped through a hidden door—a clever trick, but not clever enough. I had ways of finding people, even in the most rundown and crude places. As I approached the end of the corridor, faint voices and hurried footsteps reached my ears.Good. They hadn’t gotten far.I reached the end of the hallway where the passage split into two. I took the left without hesitation, trusting my instincts. The voices grew louder, more distinct. I cou

The flame from the match briefly illuminated his face, casting shadows that danced in his eyes. They were sharp, glinting with amusement, as if he found this entire situation entertaining. This fucker’s enjoying himself.I took a deep drag, letting the smoke fill my lungs before blowing it out slowly. The wind, cold and biting, whipped the smoke away into the night, leaving the scent of burning tobacco mingling with the stench of blood and death.“Funny,” I said in an emotionless tone, the words burning my lips. “You must know so much about me, ye

It’s been a week since that damn incident with Vincenzo and his Irish bastards, a week since I thought I’d die thrice in the same day, a week since I survived that damn crash— and my body still feels like it was wrung out and left to dry. Aurelio might as well have smirked at me while driving us into that wreck; I’m still convinced the bastard did it on purpose. A little “oops” to keep me in line, silenced and out of the way.Well, mission accomplished. By the time I woke up that day, I was back in Vincenzo’s little slice of hell—a room so perfect it makes me want to scream. The bandage on my head was tight enough to make my brain throb, but what really got under my skin was the collar still around my neck, his name etched into it like I’m som

I swallowed hard, slipping my hands into my pockets to hide the trembling. “Just putting away some clothes,” I lied smoothly, but I could almost hear the doubt in the way his eyebrows lifted suspiciously. “What clothes?” “None of your business.” I returned in irritation. “Why, are you afraid I’m going to escape through the fucking closet?” I scoffed, “Then you must have such little faith in your henchmen.” His gaze lingered on me for a moment longer, as if he could see straight through the flimsy walls of the closet, straight into the depths of my thoughts and right through the ruse. And for a split second, I wondered if he knew. But instead of pressing further, he merely nodded, a tight smile playing at the corners of his lips. “Alright,” he said, turning away to pour himself a drink. “Finish up your food.” As he moved across the room, I slipped my

My fingers trembled as I felt the crumpled paper seeming to throb with its own kind of energy. A part of me wanted to tear it to shreds, to forget it existed, but the other part—the part that had been desperate for freedom—couldn’t resist. Unfolding it carefully, I scanned the words, my pulse quickening with each line: “Went to much trouble to get this to you, princess. What do you say about a mutually beneficial meeting at the alley tonight?” The words were scrawled hastily, as if the writer had been in a rush, or perhaps afraid of being caught. A mix of excitement and dread swirled within me, but it was quickly shut off by the voice in my mind. This is a trap. “Or it’s just someone genuinely trying to help me.” I countered. Yea, but who would want to? My thoughts immediately jumped to the ch

I reached into my pocket and handed him my credit card. “Sorry for my manners,” I teased. The guy collected it with eager hands, but one looked at the card and his eyes bulged in their sockets. He opened his mouth to pronounce the name but I put a finger to my lips, shushing him with a flirty wink. He must like that because I could see the visible tent beginning to form in his pants. I smirked, “Am I your type?” He swallowed, then flushed, obviously unsure how to answer that. “I— I don’t want to get involved in whatever this is.” I gave him a disappointed look, “Why? And she’s been throwing things, capo. A lot of things.”I smirked. “Let her throw them.”“She also hasn’t eaten much,” he added, ignoring my dismissal. “And considering the flash drive you left her with, I’m guessing you know why.”That stopped me. I turned to face him, one brow raised. “Are you suggesting I should feel bad about that?”Vito held his hands up, a rare flicker of amusement breaking through his usual stoic mask. “Not my place to tell you how to run your house—or your woman. Vincenzo sat beside me, silent as ever, his cigarette burning down to the filter. The smoke curled around him like some ominous crown, and I swear, if silence were a weapon, he’d be wielding it like a pro. Did I think he was some priest in an old, echoing cathedral, ready to absolve my sins? Hell no. But I also didn’t expect him to sit there like a grim reaper deliberating over whether I deserved a swift death or slow torture for the heinous crime I’d committed at fourteen. His eyes bore into me, sharp and emotionless, like he was trying to solve a murder mystery where I was both the victim and the suspect.“Just say it already,” I snapped, my nerves fraying.Still nothing. Then again, she’d always been a master of theatrics, draped in humor and an unapologetic tendency to make you feel like the idiot in the room. But like many perceptions I’d had of her, this one seemed to be about to change. She sat beside me, stiff as a board, she’d drawn her knees up, they now hugged to her chest like she could somehow protect herself from whatever memory she was struggling to suppress. She’d been talking in fits and starts, her words stumbling out like a drunk who couldn’t find his footing. I listened, silent, smoke curling around my face, waiting for her to give me something to work with.“It was a science project,” she said finally, her voice very low. “Something about chemical reactions—whatever. It doesn’t matter now.”“Sounds thrilling,” I murmured, flicking ash into the water. “Bet you were the star of the class.”Her lips twitched like she wanted to laugh but couldn

This morning, I felt like I’d been hit by a truck—then reversed over for good measure. I stretched lazily, yawned for the longest time and stretched again, then pushed the covers away only to discover I was completely naked. I shook my head at that carelessness. Well, thankfully I remembered to lock the door as soon as I entered the room. Not like Vincenzo couldn’t come in even if he wanted to, but he didn’t. I let my eyes trail lazily across the room, it wasn’t necessarily a prison, though it might as well have been. The space whispered opulence, with its dark wood bed frame, soft-as-sin sheets, and a faint scent of something expensive and citrusy in the air. Subtle, tasteful, and just arrogant enough to scream Vincenzo Mancini owns this place. I didn’t linger. The bathroom called, and I answered like it was salvation. Under the punishing spray of the sho

The jet ride, Allesia’s labor and childbirth, the emergency services swarming around Allesia and her baby—all of it was still sharp in my memory. But what lingered most was the image of Stacy, kneeling on that blood-soaked floor, her hands trembling as she worked to save Allesia’s life.Despite my reservations about Russel, seeing him like that—a father—was almost surreal. A part of me wondered if I’d ever experience something like that.No. That kind of life wasn’t for me.It had softened something in me though, watching Stacy like that. For Russel and Allesia, no less. A woman who lived by manipulation and games had, for once, done something selfless. It made no sense. Stacy Salvatore wasn’t supposed to be someone who cared. And yet, tonight, she’d been that person. Now she sat beside me, her head tilted against my shoulder, her body slack with

He was alive. Allesia was alive. Somehow, we’d done it.I placed the baby on Allesia’s chest, my hands trembling more from relief than exhaustion. Her tears flowed freely now, her expression a mixture of pain, relief, and joy as she clutched the child to her.“My boy,” she murmured in a broken voice. Vincenzo was staring at the infant in total disbelief, he bent down cautiously, like he was peeking at a ticking time bomb. When Allesia, smiling through her tears, lifted the baby slightly so he could get a better look, he instinctively took a step back like the baby might lunge at him. When Allesia laughed, Vincenzo scowled, clearly feeling stupid. “I thought he was supposed to be a girl,” he muttered, incredulous.“I know,” Allesia agreed. “The ultrasound said it was a girl.” She grabbed the b

I stood at the edge of the cabin, arms crossed, glaring out the window into the beads of clouds we were zooming through. Allesia wouldn’t let them help her to the damn bed, insisting it was making the pain worse, she was hunched over, gripping her belly like it might explode, her groans were getting louder with every second. Not my problem. None of this was my problem. But to think I’d have to endure this for nine agonizing hours. Russel was pacing like a lunatic, muttering something about how this wasn’t supposed to happen here and how he’d never put her in this condition ever again if she survives this one, while Vincenzo stood still behind Allesia, arms on the ready to grab her if she allowed it. He was so calm about it that you’d think he was the husband. And then Allesia screame

The executioner was sitting right beside me, gripping the steering wheel like he wanted to twist my neck instead.Vincenzo insisted on driving. Of course, he did. Control freak. He hadn’t said a word since after the room episode, didn’t even have to tell me to get into the passenger seat after him, all he had to do was glare at me and I was scrambling inside.
