Natalia walked around the large banquet room, sipping her drink. She didn't care for alcohol but would drink a glass of wine at social engagements. She ignored the stares of others who didn't have the nerve to approach her as they mingled while waiting for the dinner to start.
"How are things at NC?" She turned toward the familiar voice. It was Clifford Judd. He was one of the men she worked for when she was interning. He constantly flirted with her but wasn't as aggressive as others.
"Hi, Cliff. They're going great." Natalia smiled slightly at the heavyset balding man with a large belly. His grey suit seemed to be bursting at the seams.
"That's good to hear. I want to discuss something with you regarding a company we've been trying to get under contract. I think they may be more up your alley." She didn't think it was unusual for him to share this information. There have been several occasions he had sent companies her way that wanted to be saved rather than bought.
"Okay, tell me about it." She took a step closer to him, and he shook his head.
"Let's go talk somewhere privately. I don't want anyone else eavesdropping." He started walking toward a hallway near the back of the room where the offices were located. Natalia hesitated before following him. She didn't like going anywhere alone with men, but she felt Cliff was harmless.
He led her to a small office with a desk, two chairs, and a couch. After she walked in, he closed the door. Natalia didn't walk more than a few feet into the room before turning around.
"So tell me about this company." She said, feeling slightly uncomfortable being in a confined space. Why did he need to shut the door? There was no one else around.
"What's the rush? You know I've had my eye on you since the day you started working for me. We'd never had such a sexy, smart intern before. You were different than the rest because you didn't try to get into anyone's bed to climb the ladder no matter how hard we tried." He walked closer to her, and she backed up until she bumped into the back of the couch.
"Tell me about the company." She looked toward the door, but he was blocking it.
"You owe me for helping you and not forcing myself on you back then. Now it's time for me to collect." Natalia tried to rush past him, but he grabbed her arm and pushed her over the back of the couch. She landed on her back and immediately jumped up, backing further into the room.
"Get away from me. I don't owe you anything." She spoke firmly, trying to back toward the side of the room so she could make her way to the door.
"Come on, Natalia, all I want is what I should have taken four years ago. I promise you'll enjoy it." Cliff lunged for her, but she was faster and slipped away. He reached out as she tried to pass him and grabbed her arm.
"Let me go, or I'll scream. Do you want everyone to know you tried to force yourself on me? How about your wife and kids?" She pulled on her arm, but he wouldn't let go."You're not going to open that pretty mouth of yours and tell anyone anything. I'll ensure everyone knows what a tease you are. I can make it look like you brought me here to entice me to give you a lead on a business." He pulled on her trying to take her over to the couch.
"Get the fuck off of me, or I'll call the police." Cliff laughed as he continued trying to get her to the couch. At the same time, he was unfastening his belt so he could get his pants undone."Stop fighting. You know you want this. Be a good girl, and let me have what you owe me." Natalia suddenly stopped trying to pull away and walked with him willingly. He looked over at her in surprise with excitement in his eyes.
"You're right. I do owe you. Now close your eyes while I take off my dress." Cliff thought he'd hit the jackpot. He didn't think she would actually agree. He felt his erection grow in anticipation as he closed his eyes and felt her put a hand on his shoulder. Just as he was getting ready to take a peak, her knee came up into his groin so hard he fell to the ground.
"Hey, why'd you do that?" He said with a red face while he was on the floor. The door to the office was suddenly opened, and when they looked over, they saw it was Hayden. He took in the room with a smirk. Natalia looked back toward Cliff and leaned down to his face.
"Why did I do it you asked? I just gave you what I owed you. You were going to rape me. Well, let's see how you walk after that." She shoved him backward as she walked past him, not looking at Hayden as she went.
"You still owe me bitch. I'll ruin you." Cliff yelled as she headed for the door.
"If you touch me again, I will cut that thing off," Natalia said as she walked out of the room toward the restroom. She was trying to keep her composure, but she was shaking so bad her teeth were chattering.
"Are you alright?" Hayden asked as he caught up to her. He had seen her disappear with Cliff, and after they hadn't returned, he went to look for them. When he walked into the room, it didn't take a genius to figure out what had happened.
"I'm fine." All she wanted to do was go home and take a shower. She wanted no reminders of this night on her.
"Let me take you home." Hayden could see she was shaking as she tried to keep it together.
"I have a car service that's waiting for me. Do you know if there's a back way out of here? I don't feel like walking through the crowd." Natalia wanted to cry but refused to do it in front of this man. She liked to seem tough with her business associates, but she had never been more scared than in that room with Cliff.
"Yes, come with me. I'll take you to your car." She was about to object but decided she didn't want to walk outside alone after what happened.
"Thank you." Hayden led her out the back door, and she shivered. He took his suit jacket off and put it around her shoulders. Natalia thought she should give it back, but she found it comforting and pulled it tighter around her.
When they got to the front of the building, she texted the driver telling him she was ready to go. They stood in awkward silence while they waited. Natalia was trying to hold herself together until she got home. She refused to look vulnerable in front of one of her competitors.
Hayden was trying to think of an excuse to see her again. However, he knew now was not the time to hit on Natalia. He wanted to say something to make her feel better, but he could tell by her demeanor she didn't want to talk about it. The car pulled up within a couple of minutes, and Hayden held the door open for her. Before she could get in, he took a chance and pulled her into his arms. She struggled for a second but then stopped when he started speaking.
"I'm sorry I didn't get there sooner to see you take him down. You don't have to act tough all the time. It's okay to ask for help. It doesn't make you seem weak." Natalia couldn't hold her tears anymore. She began crying on his shoulder as he held her.
Hayden felt his heart breaking, feeling her sobs. They had just met, but he could tell she was trying to appear strong and untouchable. That's one of the reasons she got the nickname ice queen. He also knew that she needed to let some of her emotions out and not hold them in, or she would break down later.
Natalia didn't know why the kind gesture of a stranger made her sob uncontrollably, but it did. It had been a while since anyone had hugged her while she cried. Actually, she knew it was the day she left Pheonix when she hugged Cara four years ago. She and her friend had grown apart, just as Cara had predicted.
When she had sex, there was nothing loving or comforting about it. They were both just getting their needs taken care of. Having someone hold her in comfort with no expectations of anything more had made the tears spill over uncontrollably.
After she dried her eyes and pulled away, she looked into Hayden's face. Natalia would be forever grateful to him for these few minutes and for letting her cry on his shoulder. She wanted to remember his handsome face because she might never see him again.
"Thank you, Hayden," Natalia said softly before getting into the car. She rode home, looking out the window in silence. She felt better after getting her crying out of the way. She glanced down and realized she was still wearing his suit jacket.
Hayden watched the car disappear with a smile on his face. He would be making a visit to her soon to get his jacket back. He was ready to go home but had something to take care of first.
He went back into the building and headed straight to the bar where Cliff was drinking. Hayden pulled him by his collar and punched him as hard as he could in the face. He felt Cliff's nose break from the impact of his fist.
"If you touch her again, I'll kill you." Hayden punched him in his swollen gut, making Cliff fall to his knees.
Everyone in the room watched in astonishment, wondering what was happening. Hayden wasn't one to fight with anyone. For him to hit Cliff like he did, they knew he most likely deserved it. Hayden walked out of the banquet hall without another word. He only had one thing on his mind, Natalia.
The following morning Natalia was lying in bed staring at the ceiling. She had a busy schedule today, but after what Cliff had done, she didn't feel like getting out of bed. Why did men always think a woman owed them? She had worked for him at one point but never asked for favors or special treatment. She didn't owe him anything. Natalia didn't believe in empty threats, and if he had raped her, she wouldn't have hesitated in filing charges. She groaned as she got out of bed and headed for the shower. She had taken an hour-long shower the night before to get any trace of Cliff off her. Even so, Natalia felt like she needed another one. Thinking of how Hayden had put his jacket around her and hugged her as she cried made her feel humiliated. She didn't like making anyone see her as a damsel in distress. She looked around with a smile as she walked back into her bedroom. She loved this apartment. It was larger than what she needed, but it was the only one they had available th
Natalia was on edge the rest of the day after agreeing to dinner with Hayden. She thought about canceling a hundred times but stopped by reminding herself it was a business dinner and nothing else. Patrice had brought the suit jacket back about an hour ago, fresh from the cleaners. She was supposed to meet him at a rooftop garden restaurant at six. She'd never been there before because her typical dinner was take-out. She sometimes was at the office until after ten and came back first thing in the morning. It didn't leave much room for a social life. She thought about running home to change but decided against it wanting to wear what she would wear to a business meeting. At five-thirty, she received a text that her car was downstairs. She grabbed her briefcase, purse, and Hayden's suit jacket as she walked out. Everyone else had left for the day around five, so she locked up after turning off the lights. The ride to the restaurant took about twenty minutes in traffic
After their dinner, Hayden saw Natalia to her waiting car before walking home with a spring in his step. He enjoyed his time with her. She was intelligent, funny, and easy to talk to. It had been a long time since he had appreciated the company of another person as much as he did with her. As he was walking, lost in thought, he felt someone tap his shoulder. When he turned around, he instantly became annoyed. "What do you want, Shania?" He asked, shaking her hand off him. "I saw you inside, and I wanted to know if you wanted me to come to keep you company tonight. We haven't seen each other for a couple of months. I thought maybe you were ready to take me back." She tried to give him what she assumed was a sexy smile as she tried to take his hand. However, to her dismay, he looked at her in disgust and pushed her hand away. "How can I take you back when we have never officially been together? You need to stop this, Shania, and get a life. We will never be together." H
After they finished breakfast, they began walking in the direction of their homes. Neither wanted to end their time together. Hayden didn't want to push her too fast, and Natalia didn't want to encourage him that she was open to more. He took her hand casually as they walked, and she felt her heart race. When they got to his building, they stopped. "This is where I live. Do you want to come up for some coffee?" Hayden wasn't ready to let her go. He held her hand a little tighter, liking how it felt. He had never been the hand-holding romantic type, but with her, it felt natural. "I should get home so I can do some work," Natalia said reluctantly. She had fun with him this morning but was hesitant to go into his apartment. She didn't think he would try anything, but she was scared to get any closer to him. What if she got hurt again? "Then how about I walk you home and make coffee there while you work?" He said with a smile, and she laughed. "You want to come to my
After the second deep kiss, Natalia pulled away and looked up at Hayden with a smile. She hoped he wouldn't trample on her fragile heart. After the second deep kiss, Natalia pulled away and looked up at Hayden with a smile. She hoped he wouldn't trample on her fragile heart. After the second deep kiss, Natalia pulled away and looked up at Hayden with a smile. She hoped he wouldn't trample on her fragile heart. "Are you sure you want something more than a casual relationship? Typically I'm with men who have no idea who I am, and it's a one-time thing." Natalia slid her hands over his t-shirt that covered his well-muscled chest and abdomen as she looked up at him. "Honestly, I've always been the same way. I only slept with women casually because I never wanted anything more with them. You're different, Natalia. You make me feel alive, and the thought of you being with another man fills me with rage. I couldn't stand only being casual with you. I want a lot more than that
Natalia went against her norm and did not return to her office to work. Instead, she decided to continue talking with Hayden. She wanted to make sure she was making the right decision to get involved with him before they went any further. Hayden felt like he had just won the lottery when Natalia said she would give them a try. He hugged her tighter and felt a sense of relief. "Do you have any family?" He asked her. "My parents were killed in a car accident when I was eighteen. They were hit by a drunk driver and died instantly. I have no siblings or any other family." Natalia kept the tears from falling. She missed her parents every day, and it still hurt to talk about them. "I'm sorry about your parents. If you didn't have anyone, how did you take care of their affairs, funeral, and everything else?" He couldn't imagine being eighteen and suddenly alone with no one. Even though Hayden disagreed with his parents on many things, he wasn't alone. "My parents
Natalia quickly finished the fantastic meal Hayden had made her, with excitement growing in her belly. She wasn't new to sex, but she had to admit that each man she'd been with hadn't been worth mentioning after they were done. It was always quick and unspectacular. When Hayden said he wanted to show her what making love was, it made her anxious to see what she'd been missing. Hayden watched her with amusement as she finished her dinner. He planned to do things with her that he'd never done with anyone else. He wanted to bring her so much pleasure that she was going out of her mind. He scarfed down the rest of his food and headed to the kitchen to clean up. "You cooked; why don't you let me clean up?" Natalia asked, joining him in the kitchen. "It will be faster if we clean together. Although, I did say I would be your butler for the day." She smiled and opened the dishwasher that she had never used. "I think faster is better." They quickly cleaned up and put the
Natalia woke up Sunday morning and stretched. Her body was sore. Who knew having so much sex was more of a workout than going to the gym? She was wrapped in Hayden's arms and rolled over until she faced him. He was softly snoring and had some stubble on his face, making him look even more handsome. As she watched him sleep, she was conflicted. What if all they had was one amazing weekend? Would he come to his senses on Monday morning and realize he doesn't want anything more with her? She frowned as she thought about how fast things escalated between them. Was she too quick to give her heart away? "Hey, what's wrong?" Hayden woke up and saw the sadness on Natalia's face. He leaned down and kissed her hoping to cheer her up. She was smiling when he pulled away. "I was thinking that you may wake up tomorrow morning, go to the office, and decide that you were wrong about wanting to start anything with me." She was always honest about what she was thinking. "Tomorrow
Three Months Later Natalia finally had the casts off her legs and was working with her physical therapist, Hannah. She was able to take a couple of painful steps before having to sit back down. It was slow work, but it would be worth it in the end. Hayden came to every appointment with her, much to the delight of Hannah, who had an obvious crush on him. Hayden avoided her as much as possible while staying near Natalia. It made him uncomfortable each time Hannah accidentally touched him when there was no reason for her to do so. Natalia laughed it off, telling him he should be used to it by now with how handsome he was. However, Hayden was getting seriously annoyed and was close to saying something to her about it. "How soon before Natalia will be able to walk like she used to?" Hayden asked Hannah, rolling his eyes when her face turned red, and she fluttered her eyelashes at him. "It may be months. So you may have to come here for a while." She answered, pretending to accidenta
Nick, Colby, Teo, and Kyle sat in the van across the street from the apartment building, waiting for Simon Allegri to show up for work. It was close to seven in the morning, so they expected him soon. They were upset about not being able to take out Jon before the authorities got him, so this was a way for them to redeem themselves. A few minutes before seven, they saw Simon walking toward the entrance. He was carrying a duffle bag they were sure had his gun hidden inside. They weren't going to make a move while he was in the apartment building. Instead, they would follow him when he left and take him off the street. It was time for the hunter to become the hunted. They didn't move all day while they waited. The four men got ready for quitting time so they could follow the hitman. When he walked out of the building, Teo and Colby hopped out of the van to follow him on foot while Nick and Kyle stayed in the van. As they followed him, the four men were conscientious, knowing Simon
"I never thought they would sink that low to kill us because we got their daughter locked up. They have taken this too far." Hayden pulled out his phone, ready to call the Blacks but changed his mind. Natalia had been right. The pain medication was helping his pain, and now he could think clearly. "What do you think we should do?" Natalia asked, noticing that he was no longer grimacing with every move. "We need to talk this through. I was going to call Simon Black and give him a piece of my mind. However, I don't want him to know we're on to him. We need to make the hitman disappear and then give proof to the authorities of who hired him." Hayden looked toward Dorian, who was nodding in agreement. "We at least know he's got a job here in the building, and he starts tomorrow. We also know what he looks like, so I can have my men take care of him. Let me work on getting something to hand over to the police about Simon Black." Dorian sent a message to his men and aske
"You've got to be fucking kidding me. Who would hire a hitman to come after us?" Hayden said with fury coursing through his veins. Hadn't they been through enough? He looked at Natalia; her face was void of emotion, as though she couldn't process this information right now. "I don't know who, but I'll see what I can find out. In the meantime, he'll be working in the building, so we need to be on high alert. He'll find whatever way he can to get to his target." Dorian sometimes hated that he was so good at doing what he did because it made him the bearer of bad news more times than not. "Do you think Jon would go to these lengths?" Krista asked, looking around at everyone. "I think he's more hands-on. It's not about us being dead for him. He wants to experience the killing for himself." Natalia spoke in a monotone. She felt as though she was ready to break. Why would someone hire a hitman? Her life was turning into something of a bad movie that seemed never to hav
Hayden and Krista helped Natalia into the restroom. Actually, Krista helped while Hayden supervised. He couldn't stop the nagging feeling as though someone was watching them when they went for their walk. When they returned to the living room, Hayden looked at Dorian. "Are you able to tap into the cameras outside the building?" He asked his cousin, who looked at him in confusion. "Yeah, were you looking for something specific?" Dorian asked as he turned on his laptop. Krista sat next to him, plastered to his side. It was their favorite way to sit together. He had never been in love before, but he knew that's what he felt for her. He just hadn't had the nerve to say it yet. They'd only been together for about a week. "When we were walking, I felt like someone was watching us. I may be paranoid, but I just want to be sure. We've had enough surprises." Hayden glanced toward Natalia, who was staring at him with concern. He hoped he was wrong. They had enough to worry
Todd got comfortable across the street from Natalia and Hayden's building. Those who hired him originally only wanted Natalia to be killed. After seeing how connected she and Hayden were to each other, they decided it was better to get rid of both of them. Todd was a hired hitman, and the people that hired him had a lot of money. He didn't understand why they wanted this young couple dead. From what he'd read about them, they were decent people. However, they seemed to have someone constantly trying to tear them down. Todd didn't need to know his employer's motivation, but he liked to have the background of those he was hunting. He knew Natalia had no family and had built her business from the ground up. After being pushed in front of oncoming traffic, a serial killer started hunting her. Hayden was from a wealthy family whose business had been struggling until he took over. Neither of them seemed to have many close friends, only acquaintances. From what he found, neither had bee
Sofia was so sure that she was going to cause a scene that she crossed her arms and leaned back with a smirk. However, she saw Hayden and Natalia look at each other before they started laughing. "You thought that was going to be breaking news that caused Hayden to suddenly want you or something? First of all, I know Hayden has never spent all night with anyone besides me. Even if you did sleep together, I'm sure it was a one-and-done like every other woman he'd been with before me. You were obviously not good because he doesn't even remember you. So if you thought this would cause some type of conflict between us, you're mistaken. Hayden and I both have pasts, and we're not jealous of them. Unlike you, we look to the future." Natalia had a fire in her eyes, causing Sofia's face to turn red as though she'd been slapped. It was then that she realized Hayden was on the phone. "Hi Paul, this is Hayden Sumner. I need to talk with you regarding Sofia Spurling." Sofia felt sick as she
Sofia looked between Hayden and Natalia wanting to bring up the fact that she was with him first. She wanted to break their happiness and have it for herself. However, the longer she waited, the more her nerve started to fade. Seeing how Hayden was with Natalia, she knew talking about their few minutes of sex that obviously meant nothing to him wouldn't matter to either of them. "What did you want to say?" Questioned Natalia with a small smile. "I just wanted to say that I am going to do everything I can to have Jon sentenced to death. He has killed too many people to skate by, with life in prison. I want his head on a platter." Sofia spoke with conviction as she pulled out a pad of paper from her briefcase. She was still going to get around reminding Hayden of who she was, but she decided it would be best done in private. Maybe he would see her out when she was leaving. Natalia looked at Sofia, not believing she was being completely honest. It felt as though she had
Jon sat in the interrogation room across from Andy and Dennis with a smirk on his face. He hadn't asked for an attorney yet, but he would eventually. He knew there really wasn't a point in having an attorney when he flaunted all of his crimes online and even bragged about them. "Do you have anything you'd like to say?" Dennis asked, letting his disdain for him be heard in every word. Jon shrugged. "What's there to say? I killed a lot of people. I think about killing people all the time because I get off on it. Think about the best orgasm you've ever had and multiply it by a thousand. That's how it feels when I cut those whores into little pieces. Although when I get out of here, I think I won't only kill women. I'll kill men, too. After all, blood is all the same color no matter who you are." He started laughing like a maniac as Dennis and Andy stared at him with disgust. "You were good at disguising yourself. Even walking right in front of several officers as a w
