I changed my dress with one of his T-shirts that was too big for me, the hem of the T-shirt dangling five inches above my knees. The scent of detergent and a hint of his cologne still lingered on the shirt I wore. I left the candle next to the bed still burning; after the attack incident, I never slept with the lights off again for the past year. The large and comfortable bed quickly induced my tiredness after a long day, and five minutes later I was already drifting off.

***

I heard his heavy breaths in the darkness. "Shut up, you bastard."

His head covered with a mask hovered a few inches in front of my face, whispering those words again, "Shut up."

I wanted to scream, but my voice was choked in my throat. One of his hands reached for my covered abdomen. "S-stop..." My tears flowed along with my sobs. "Please, stop."

His cold and rough hand moved slowly upwards; I closed my eyes and pushed his body off me with all my strength. Suddenly, he wrapped both his wrists around mine, gripping me to prevent me from struggling. "You'll pay for this, darling, with your body."

I could almost smell the alcohol on his heavy breaths...

***

My screams shattered the silence of the night. That dream appeared again in my sleep. I opened my eyes in the darkness, pulling myself to sit up and look around; the terror from my dream was creeping back. For a moment, I couldn't remember where I was until the door at the end of the room slammed open loudly.

"Eleanor!"

That dream had only appeared once before, when I was in the hospital with Nicholas. And now, it resurfaced again when I was with Nicholas again. My heart raced so fast in my chest that I felt slightly dizzy.

"Eleanor, are you okay?" I heard his footsteps approaching. I hugged my knees tightly to hide my trembling body.

"Just a b-bad dream." I answered with a dry and shaky voice. I could feel a trickle of cold sweat running down my spine.

"You dreamt of it again?" his voice sounded cautious.

"Only when I'm with you." "I'm okay." I muttered.

I felt the bed next to me move, then I felt his arms wrap around me. He was still wearing the same shirt, perhaps the same clothes as last night. Then, the next moment, I felt my back against his chest. The warmth of his body made my shivers subside. He held me tightly for a full five minutes without saying a word.

"Do you want to talk about it?" he asked softly. I shook my head, "I just want to go back to sleep."

He shifted so I could lie back down. But Nicholas didn't leave; instead, he dropped his body next to mine. "I'll stay until you fall asleep again." His comforting voice made me feel a little better.

"You don't have to do that."

"Ssshh." He whispered, "Do you want me to hold you?" he asked a few moments later.

"I'm fine." I replied, trying to look at his face in the darkness.

"But I want to." He pulled me into his embrace until my head rested on his chest, I could hear his fast heartbeat from this close. I didn't know his heart was also beating fast when he was near me.

One of his hands gently stroked my back, before I realized it, I started telling him about what happened that night. My voice still trembled as I recounted it, but I didn't feel as scared as before. There was only a sense of safety.

His body tensed as I spoke, but his hands didn't stop stroking my back. He didn't interrupt my story, he just listened, although I occasionally heard the sound of his jaw clenching tightly.

When I finished talking, he was still silent, I didn't dare to look up to see his face again, and I couldn't see clearly in this darkness. His heart still beat loudly in my chest.

"So are we going to pretend not to know each other again tomorrow?" I asked in a low voice. His hand on my back froze instantly. I didn't know where this relationship was going, or maybe it would end again.

Gregory's warning from a few hours ago echoed in my head again.

"I don't want to hurt you." His voice was slightly hoarse as he answered, I could hear a hint of anger in it.

"I'm not that fragile." I whispered back.

"You're human, Eleanor."

I pushed him slightly so I could look up at him, even though I couldn't see clearly, "Then what?"

He snorted then added, "You're even afraid of me."

I placed one of my hands on his rapidly beating heart, "Yeah. I thought so too. But lately, I realized that's not what I'm afraid of you for. I'm afraid because I'm starting to really like you, and one day I'll wake up and you'll leave me. Like the others. In the end, I'll be alone again."

"Eleanor..."

"I'm scared of the pain and loss that comes with it." I continued with a little laugh, "But you'll leave me in the end, won't you?"

"Eleanor."

"You're right." I started pushing him away, "We should stay away. I'll leave as soon as possible tomorrow morning—"

"Eleanor!" He pushed me until I lay on my back, his hands on both sides of my head. I could see his silhouette moving above me. "Stop talking."

I looked up at his silhouette in the darkness, my heart began to beat fast again as I realized we were alone in this house, and we were hugging on his bed. Maybe just being near him was enough to give me a heart attack because my heart always beat fast.

Suddenly I felt sad, not meeting him for a year and not hearing his voice alone made me feel this sad. I wasn't sure I could survive in the following years if this was the last day we met.

Could I forget this man?

I lifted my right hand to touch his face in the darkness, my fingers tracing his cheek and jawline slowly. He responded by pushing his face slightly into my hand.

"Why can't I be with you?" I asked in a whisper.

"You're talking again." He warned with a softer voice.

"I—Am I not good enough for you?" I knew I wasn't like Alice, and sometimes I could be a bit annoying. But seeing him tonight, seeing him wanting me as much as I wanted him made my hope return.

"Eleanor..."

"What should I do, Nicholas?" the moment his name left my lips he pulled my hand away from his face and held it above my head gently.

"If you go, Eleanor, don't look back." He whispered with his hands still holding mine.

I didn't know what to say to him, I didn't even know what to feel right now. But from his tone, it sounded like a bad memory.

"I don't know what to do." I almost heard despair in my own voice. His fingers stopped moving on my skin. Then a moment later, he released my hand from his gently.

"If that's the case, then go. And don't look back."

"Go?" I repeated in disbelief. He's asking me to leave?"Or stay with me. Whatever your choice, you can't do it halfway. If you decide to leave, I'll make sure we never meet again. But if you choose to stay..." his voice deepened, "There's no turning back for you. You belong to me."My heart pounded harder upon hearing his last words. He sounded dead serious as he said it. "What will happen if I stay?" I asked."You belong to me," he repeated, his tone slightly cold. "I will hunt down that woman, and I won't stop until I've killed her.""Kill her?""I will eliminate anything that threatens what belongs to me, Eleanor," he replied seriously. "And if you belong to me, I will never let you go, even if you beg me to." He said before walking towards the door, "I'll give you a week."His words echoed in my head even after he left the room. I understood the reason behind his cold attitude towards me. He didn't want to influence my decision, or more accurately... He didn't want me to regret i

San Francisco has never looked as gloomy as it does now. Or more accurately, my mood has never been this gloomy before. For the umpteenth time, I sighed while staring out the window of my office. Being an assistant manager afforded me some perks, one of which was having my own office, albeit very small, but still better than sharing cramped cubicles with other employees.Today marks exactly one week since I met Nicholas. Today, I should give him my answer. I couldn't close my eyes at all last night, and this morning, Mr. LeBlanc's tasks diverted almost all of my thoughts away from Nicholas. At the very least, I should call him tonight to tell him my answer. But until this moment, I still don't know what to say to him.I can't ask Lana for advice. It seems Lana is suffering just as much as I am. Ever since we returned from Manhattan, Lana always changes the subject whenever I mention Gregory Shaw. So far, Gregory hasn't shown his face again. I don't know whether to feel relieved becaus

Apartment Greg, it feels strange that only I call him Gregory, as large as his apartment and Lana's. Some unopened boxes were stacked in the corner of the room. I slowly surveyed the entire room; all the furniture looked like it had just come out of an interior design magazine. Although a bit messy because he had just moved in.The dominance of gray and black colors, as well as stainless steel and granite, made this apartment look expensive. I imagined Greg only needed to point to a design model he wanted, and a few hours later, his apartment would be ready. Money makes everything easier. How much did they pay Mr. Osborne to give up his apartment? I frowned as I thought about it. He couldn't possibly leave his job in Manhattan. Maybe Greg would just visit Lana every weekend, maybe this apartment was just temporary... my gaze moved to Nicholas, who was standing a few meters in front of me, one shoulder leaning against the wall next to him, both hands in his pockets. And he was watching

I was too tired to walk home today, so I took a taxi. All I needed right now was a glass of warm milk and my bed. I paid the taxi when it stopped in front of my apartment building and went inside. Lana should have already gone home; maybe she's watching TV with Greg right now. I rummaged through my bag to find my keys while yawning, and I heard faint laughter coming from inside the apartment. I closed the apartment door and walked towards the source of the laughter in the kitchen. They were sitting at the dining table chatting—Lana, Greg... and Nick. He turned around when he heard me enter and smiled at me. Nick was wearing a light blue shirt, no tie, and no jacket. His eyes looked warmly at me. "Eleanor."I didn't return his smile; I hid my surprise and took the remaining seat beside him. Lana didn't cook tonight; she and Greg ordered Chinese food, which was now half eaten on the table."Hey, there's dim sum! Thanks, Lana. I'm starving." I smiled at Lana, who was laughing. Greg looke

"Nick..." I called out to him as he had just returned to my room. Nick had changed into pajama pants and a t-shirt belonging to Greg. He turned towards me, raising an eyebrow with a questioning look."Are you going to sleep here?" I asked, looking at him and then at my bed.Nick placed his phone on the small table next to my bed and turned back to me. "Do you mind?"I shook my head and shrugged. "Greg never used his apartment, and now you neither. So why did you guys rent it?""Greg needed a place for his things." Nick sat on my bed, still looking at me. It felt strange seeing him in my room—or on my bed. He didn't seem to fit with my lilac-colored bed cover. Not to mention, I was used to seeing him in his formal suits; seeing him in pajamas and a casual t-shirt made me—"Eleanor," he interrupted, "are you going to stand there staring at me all night or join me?" He pulled a corner of his mouth up, forming a slight smile. His messy brown hair framed his handsome face. I returned the s

The adrenaline pumped through my veins, making me more aware. So did the pain that followed, although I could barely feel my legs at this point. My gaze was still fixed on the metal, only a few inches from my head. Drops of blood fell onto my hair and face.Greg's blood. My lips trembled as I called his name. But no sound came out of me, no sound in my head except for a loud buzzing. Hot tears quickly wetted both my cheeks, making my vision slightly blurry. But Greg sacrificed himself for me, and now he was dead because of me.The pain, the trauma, and the shock made it hard for me to breathe, and slowly my consciousness began to fade.***"Eleanor."My eyes snapped open, my breath racing as if I had just run a long distance.Nick. I almost couldn't breathe. The heavy footsteps were getting closer, and I held onto my phone tighter. I hoped it would slow down the pounding of my heart too."If He finds you..." Nick's voice sounded almost growling, "Run."I wanted to answer, but I bit my lip hard to stop myself. I wanted to ask where He was, I just wanted to hear His voice speaking. Anything to lessen the fear gripping me right now. I pushed my body into the corner of the cube, into the darker part. I hid myself under the table, barely visible. The only way He would know my hiding place was by checking each cube on this floor one by one."Alice... you take the lift. I'll check the emergency stairs," Nick's slightly out-of-breath voice sounded again, it seemed like He was running. A little relief eased my fear."El—Ella?"My heart almost stopped when I heard the voice echoing on this floor."Ella, I know you're here..." He repeated, but His voice sounded scared."Ella, please... When I woke up, I found myself in the same place as before, lying on the floor of a room covered with carpet. However, the intense pain that had almost killed me was gone, as was the burning sensation I had felt before. I couldn't feel anything, but I also couldn't move my body. The only thing I could move was my eyelids as I blinked.Another uncomfortable issue I faced was that my throat felt extremely dry. It was like I had just eaten a bowl of hot, coarse sand. I couldn't open my mouth to scream, even though I wasn't sure I had a voice to scream with anymore. For almost three hours, I could only stare at the ceiling above me and blink. I didn't know if it was morning or night. My body was still in the exact same position as before I lost consciousness. Everything happened so quickly. The sound of the bell woke me up from sleep, and I felt the bed move as Nick got up. I didn't know what time it was, so I closed my eyes again, but the next silence made me open them and look at the digital clock next to the bed, which showed 2 a.m.The next moment, the sound of something breaking outside followed by Nick's angry shout. My heart felt like it leaped in my chest when the sound of shattered glass was heard again; in the darkness, I got off the bed and put on my sleeping coat."I will kill you if you touch her!" Nick's threat made me slow down my steps, my heart pounding hard as I opened the bedroom door. Nick stood with his back to me, his body tense, wearing only his pajama pants. But a strong killing aura emanated from his body, making the fine hairs on my body stand on end. He clenched his fists tightly, and my breath caught as I saw the shards of glass and fresh blood flowing from the palm of his hand."Mr. Shaw, we will only ask once.

"Having offspring is very difficult for Volders, sometimes one has to try several times with different partners. Usually, a Volder's goal in taking a Leech is to have offspring." Alice paused for a moment. "And that is why Nicholas is very eager to kill Alastair."But... "Alastair changed me not because he wanted to have offspring.""I know. But Nicholas sees it differently, and he will always see Alastair as a threat." Alice smiled wryly at the expression on my face. "And not only that, Eleanor, a Leech is the property of the Volder who changed them. They are bound until one of them dies. In short, Alastair's blood and power are more dominant in you than Nicholas's, no matter what.""What will happen if Nick kills Alastair?""If he kills Alastair? His clan will retaliate, of course. Two hundred years ago, nothing was more important in my life than power. Two hundred years later, the only thing that matters most in my life is a woman. If I could go back in time and tell my younger self about Eleanor, my younger self would probably just snort and forget about it.But now...I slip my right hand into my pants pocket, my fingers touching the soft velvet surface of a small box. It took me a long time to choose it, to the point where I had to be late coming home. But it was all worth it for the ring in my pocket right now. It's a ruby stone that I finally chose for Eleanor. Even since the first time I saw it, I knew this ring would be perfect for her.I didn't plan any of this at all; marriage is not the most important thing right now. No, as long as I haven't gotten rid of Alastair, Eleanor is not entirely mine. But lately, Eleanor seems to be drifting further away from me, no matter how close she is next to me, I can feel her mind is far from me. My eyes opened wide."Lana?" I murmured, looking at her standing in front of Nick, her hands clenched tightly. Greg stood not far from her. "What are you doing to Ella?" She sounded somewhat hysterical as she asked Nick, who seemed too surprised to answer."I'm taking her home," he said, walking past the frozen Nick. Lana's blue eyes looked very angry... and they were focused on me. But just a few steps later, Nick quickly turned around and grabbed Lana's hand to stop her. The next moment, Greg grabbed Nick's arm. "Let go of her," Greg's voice made the fine hairs on my back stand up."You can't take her back," Nick completely ignored Greg's warning, his gaze fixed on Lana. The three of them looked ridiculous in their tug-of-war. Although I knew the atmosphere in the room had become tense, I couldn't help but stifle a small laugh. My mood had drastically changed upon seeing the three of them. I guess this is one of the effects of pregnancy."Of course, I can," Lana retorted sharply bef

When Nick said "home," I thought he would take me to his home where he lived with Greg. But his car turned towards a building I knew very well. I didn't ask until we stopped in the basement parking. Perhaps Nick planned to bring some of his work home; I could imagine how long it had been since he worked. "I'll wait here." I said as he opened my door."You'll be waiting here overnight, Eleanor." Nick lifted the corner of his mouth. He looked messy yet handsome at the same time. His jawline with stubble and messy hair contrasted with his usually neat appearance, although his eyes still looked as serious as ever.I wanted to kiss him."Eleanor?" He raised both his eyebrows, waiting for me to get out. As I stepped out, I wondered how many women like me had fallen for his charm. No, I don't think Nick ever intentionally flirted with women. Greg was more likely; the two brothers were like polar opposites. Nick led me to a smaller basement lift and took out a black card. I only then realized

My gaze was fixed on the sink in the pantry. Dark red thick liquid clung to some of its white ceramic tiles, then my eyes shifted to the bottle in my hand. This was the third time I tried to drink the blood Greg brought, and the third time I vomited it back up. Was this blood expired?I placed the bottle on the counter and turned on the sink faucet to wash away all the blood that stuck to the tiles. I rubbed my stomach while reaching for the phone Greg had given me earlier, then sent a short message about the blood supply he provided before returning to bed. I knew the early stages of pregnancy were very risky, at least for humans, so I had to request a fresh blood supply as soon as possible, even though I wasn't feeling very hungry yet. Alastair's blood was still enough for a few hours, or more. I closed my eyes as sleepiness crept in. Where was Nick now? Was he looking for me? That was my last thought before sleep overtook me.***One advantage of my transformation was that all my s

Erik and Greg are searching on the other side of Manhattan; I haven't met them since Eleanor disappeared this morning. Twice. Twice in 24 hours she has disappeared, and this time, Alastair has truly kidnapped her. I don't know how none of the three of us noticed the intruder's presence. I won't stop until Alastair pays twice... no, three times over for this.My cellphone, lying on the passenger seat, vibrated. I glanced briefly at the unknown number flashing on the screen and ignored it. I pressed harder on the accelerator, speeding through the deserted streets, which had been empty since morning until now.

I thought I would see Nick's angry blue eyes behind the door, but when a pair of dark blue eyes, filled with panic, met mine, I froze in place. "Greg?" I wiped my tears with the back of my hand and blinked as I watched him walk towards me.He pulled me behind him until I was behind his back, protected from Alastair. "Are you okay?" He just glanced back slightly, then his gaze returned to the man sitting across from me. Where have I heard it before?"Thank you, Clea." The voice spoke again. I forced my mind to focus and remember. Where have I— I struggled to open my eyes. A dimly lit room greeted my eyes. Alastair. It was Alastair's voice."Eleanor? Are you awake?" He spoke again from beside me, but my vision was still slightly blurry."Nick..." I murmured, my voice unclear."Unfortunately, he's not here right now."I blinked my eyes a few times, even though it made my head hurt. A light blue room greeted me when my vision cleared, I was in a hotel room. It's the same hotel as when I first came to Manhattan a year and a half ago, before I met Nick. Alastair sat next to my bed, looking at me with a hint of concern. "Are you feeling better?" he asked."How—""I kidnapped you," he replied without wait
