“Not this pest again,” Davies mumbled underneath his breath when he heard the unwelcome voice. Kylie’s expression wasn’t pleasant either. For she knew all too well who was behind them.
Behind Davies was a blond haired lady with model good looks and an enviable figure. Loose strands of her luxurious hair straddled her swan-like neck, and a few more cascaded into her low cut blouse. Her floral skirt gave her an elegant appeal. Her brown eyes carried the grace of one who was placed above many others; one whose birth was celebrated by the stars themselves. She was gorgeous woman and a familiar figure to Kylie and Davies. This girl was Sam, a constant pest in Davies and Kylie’s side.“What did you say?” Sam frowned in displeasure with her eyes glued on Davies. Although Davies spoke underneath his breath, his clear voice was difficult to miss.“What does it matter what he said?” Jack turned to face Sam and asked. Although he pestered Davies and Kylie most of the time, he never looked down on them. The three had a tacit understanding between each other and knew what exactly to expect of themselves. So Davies and Kylie knew that although Jack usually followed them around and was always disturbing them in one way or another, he never meant any harm. The same couldn’t be said about Sam though. She never hid her disdain of Kylie and Davies. And whatever chance she got to embarrass or harm them, she took it. There were many times both Davies and Kylie had fallen into Sam’s traps. However, of the two, Kylie had been victimized more than Davies. There were many instances of such moments. But the most recent one would have to be when Sam somehow was able to intercept an email detailing the schedule of tests and exams meant for Kylie and had sent a slightly altered one in its place. Although the days on the one Sam sent were the same, the times were slightly different, ensuring that Kylie would be an hour late for each test. This had caused her to almost fail a quiz. Fortunately right after that paper Davies confirmed that what she received was false. And both were able to pinpoint the entire ordeal to the gloating Sam. As for why Sam was always bullying Davies and Kylie, it was because of Jack. As the only child of one of the richest men in the region, Sam didn’t lack anything. The pampered princess grew up getting everything she wanted. And for her it was unusual to find something she liked that she could not get. Unfortunately for her, that was indeed the case. There was something she liked; yet it fell under the empty list of unattainable fantasies. This object was Jack but the burly boy wasn’t interested in Sam at all. For Sam this was very new because boys usually followed her around like flies. She was beautiful, intelligent and wealthy. She was a dream for most men. But for some reason Jack wasn’t charmed by her. Maybe it was because Jack’s family wasn’t the least bit inferior to hers, but it was still strange. And this led Sam to believe that it was because of Kylie that Jack wasn’t interested in her. She always saw Jack laughing around Davies and Kylie, something he didn’t do around her, and assumed it was because he was having a much better time with them. She didn’t know that he was mostly teasing them in such instances.“Well, with your background someone like this pretty boy shouldn’t be badmouthing you,” Sam crossed her thin arms and said. Her words caused Davies to frown, but he chose to remain silent. His family was wealthy, but it didn’t have the history Jack and Sam’s families had. Before such deeply rooted families, his family’s money wasn’t worth much. But there was someone who wasn’t going to allow another to insult her friend.“How does background determine how a person should speak?” Kylie stood up and asked. She was slightly taller than Sam, so when she stood she had to tilt her head just a bit in order to look the rude girl in her eyes.“You are not worthy to speak to me either, Kylan,” Sam waved her hand nonchalantly as though Kylie was some sort of stain in her clothes.“You…” Kylie’s eyes blazed in anger hearing how Sam addressed her. Sam knew how to get under her skin, and she never lost the chance to do so. Kylan was a man’s name, but Sam addressed Kylie in such a manner just to annoy her. Because of Kylie’s great athleticism, many of the girls teased her behind her back. It was mostly due to jealousy because Kylie was talented in pretty much everything. Added to the fact that she was pretty and intelligent, the others all felt done in by the one who created them all. If there was a God, most of them wondered, why did he give all the good stuff to just one person and leave them with pieces of what was leftover?“She isn’t worth it,” Davies shook his head and said to Kylie seeing that his friend was close to losing her temper. Then he held Kylie’s hand and dragged her away.“Don’t speak to them like that again,” Jack frowned and went after Kylie and Davies. As for Sam, Jack cared little for her, especially because of how she regarded others.“Wait!” Sam exclaimed and chased after Jack.“Don’t you dare follow me,” Jack turned back to face Kylie with a blue glow in his eyes. His face was twisted into a menacing scowl and Sam found herself taking a step back subconsciously.“Do not let me remind you of who I am,” Jack added before finally exiting the lecture hall. As for Sam, she stood there stiffly for a while before being dragged away by a few of her friends also.“Don’t let her get to you Kylie. You know how she is. She just loves to get a reaction from you.” Outside the class Davies was trying to comfort Kylie. His words helped somewhat, for she was much calmer now.“I know,” Kylie sighed. “I can go to my room by myself Davies. There is no need for you to escort me.” Kylie informed Davies before hastening her steps. But Davies was quick to catch up with her.“I want to send you back,” he offered.“No. I would rather be alone. Please listen to me.” Kylie pleaded.“Very well. Are we still on for this weekend?” he asked.“Of course,” Kylie smiled before giving Davies a hug and leaving him behind. Davies watched Kylie’s figure for a while until she disappeared round the corner. When he couldn’t see her anymore, he sighed wistfully before turning to go his way.“Argh!” Davies screamed, startled by Jack’s figure. “Why did you sneak up on me like that?” Davies complained while clutching on to his chest.“Sorry. I didn’t mean to.” Jack apologized.“Wait a minute. Did you just apologize to me?” Davies asked as his eyes widened exaggeratedly.“I did,” Jack chuckled with his hands in his pockets.“That must mean that you want something,” Davies squinted his eyes and said. Jack scratched his head embarrassingly when his true intents were exposed.“I do,” Jack admitted.“It concerns Kylie, doesn’t it?” Davies showed why he was one of the class’s top students with his accurate guess. Jack nodded his head in reply and said what he wanted to say.“Why does the name Kylan annoy her so much? She is usually very calm and rarely gets upset no matter what happens to her. So why is that name able to bring out her wrathful side?”This was what Jack wanted to know. For Kylie wasn’t one prone to anger. And he didn’t believe that it was because the girls teased her saying she was like a man that got to her. He felt that there was something he didn’t know.“Knowing you, you wouldn’t stop pestering me if I didn’t tell you. And it will only be a matter of time before you approach Kylie herself you insensitive bloke.” Davies grumbled. Jack didn’t bother about the insult Davies hurled at him. He nodded his head to show that what Davies was saying was indeed true. His persistence was well known to Davies. In that respect, Jack and Sam were very similar.“I don’t know how Sam found out, but the name Kylan is very important to Kylie,” Davies sighed. A strange sadness filled the lanky boy’s frame all of a sudden, and Jack found himself being immersed in his friend’s emotion.“Why?” Jack wondered.“Because that is the name of her brother – her deceased brother.”Kylie cut a downtrodden figure as she made her way back to her hostel. Her eyes were unfocused, her body moving on muscle memory alone; for her head was filled with images of one she held dear; one who was here before but was no more. She missed her brother and best partner. She longed to see the one who ruffled her hair every time whilst cackling in gracious laughter that she was his honeybee. “Sigh. I miss you Kylan. I wish you were here. This world is so much more difficult to understand without you here to walk it with me. You promised you would always protect me remember?” Kylie smiled forlornly as she looked into the late afternoon sky. Her eyes caught the retreating figure of the sun as it descended behind the clouds and slowly gave way to the night. Her brother was like that celestial object. He came and shone in her life, giving her eyes vision and her life hope and he disappeared just as quickly; but unlike the sun, he didn’t reappear. Her lost mind couldn’t help but fiddle
It is said that dreams are a subconscious to the soul. And that one can hardly dream what one hasn’t thought of. Many dreams are manifestations of the things we deeply desire and nightmares are the exact opposite – manifestations of the things we greatly fear. Very rarely does one dream what hasn’t been thought of. But are dreams always dreams? Visions are said to be sights into the unknown – whether that be the hidden past or the unpredictable present and future; but visions can also be linked to the one who saw them. For in visions we have two types: the visions that are given unto us and the visions that are born from us. How does one differentiate visions from dreams? And how can one tell whether something is a dream or a vision when what is seen has never been thought of before, nor pondered over even in passing? The answer to all these questions is time. Time tells all these things. And time definitely reveals the authenticity of visions. Kylie was facing a strange situation. A
A loud howl rang through the forest and forced its way into Kylie’s delicate ears. “Something’s here!” Kylie’s eyes lit up like Bunsen burners as she tried to make out where the sound came from.“Come on, howl again,” Kylie prayed silently. And as if responding to her prayer, the creature howled once again. *Awoo*The howl was strong and powerful, indicative of a healthy beast. Even an idiot could tell that whatever that was, it was no sheep, and that staying away was the wise choice. That creature was very possibly a wolf. And who wanted to garner the attention of a wolf? For even if the wolf was a lone one, it was still capable of ripping an unarmed human apart with relative ease. But Kylie wasn’t thinking straight. “There!” Kylie’s sharp ears picked up the location of the howl and she sped towards it. The sound was coming from her left! She moved with the grace of a deer, evading the sly branches that threatened to trip her and leaping past trees that stood in her way with subt
“What was that?” Kylie was curled up in her bed with her large blanket wrapped around her like she was a burrito. She stared right ahead, her image in the mirror reflecting a downtrodden figure. Her unfocused eyes suggested that there was nothing she was actually looking at; for her present yet "un-present" mind kept drifting off to the strange events she had seen in her dream. The half-moon sticking out her window suggested that it was still night time. The light of the stars were quite illuminating this evening, and part of Kylie’s room fell under their graceful banner. And that part included the section with the clock which indicated that it was barely half past 2 am.“If felt so real,” Kylie mumbled with a shaky voice. How long had it been since she was terrified like this? The last time she had felt fear was when her brother went missing. And for those months that her mind kept feeding her terrifying images of what might have happened to him, she felt great fear. However, after t
Aiden travelled swiftly. He showed his peculiarity by the route he chose for his travel. For while others were comfortable with their feet to the ground, Aiden was an admirer of the air. The handsome youth moved from rooftop to rooftop. And his movement was so graceful, his feet so nimble, that not a single sound was made. There was no disturbance or noise. There was only peace. His movements were best described as illusionary and his speed best matched by a specter of the night. He moved with great purpose and nothing could distract him.Anchor University was the name of Kylie’s school. It was a top notch university and only accepted students who were not only brilliant, but possessed peculiar traits as well. Anchor University was not only one of the top three universities in the country, it was the one with the largest campus. It was situated on a giant stretch of land, and each building was several thousands of meters high. However, neither the tall buildings nor the huge amount of
Once the order was given, the two women to Elder Sand’s sides sprang into action. The red glows in their eyes intensified as their legs propelled their bodies forward. They spread their fingers out to allow their sharp nails the freedom to do damage and extended their arms for a sweeping attack. Like perfectly synchronized dance partners they moved and attacked together. And in less than a second they had closed the gap between themselves and Aiden. “Roar” Aiden unleashed another powerful roar as his knees bent slowly to accommodate his body weight. The shoes he wore were blasted apart as his feet enlarged and his toenails transformed into powerful claws. His exposed teeth morphed into the dentition of a lion, and his gaze was as sharp as the king of beasts. With great force he propelled himself forward, barreling into Eva and Marie!Aiden opened his arms wide like an anxious boyfriend who was eager to hug his girlfriend whom he hadn’t seen for the longest time with all the love he c
“Well, would you look at that,” Elder Sand’s hiss with feigned displeasure. “The cub becomes a man,” he giggled loudly in a voice that infuriated Aiden so much that if he had the strength he would have gone after the elder instead. However, fate dictated that his adversaries be the two women who stood before the elder like a wall of ice.The three kept sizing each other up. Aiden kept giving out low growls as his eyes alternated between Eva and Marie who were slowly widening the distance between the two sides. It seemed that they were creating enough space between themselves so that Aiden wouldn’t be capable of attacking both at once. But their decision was exactly what Aiden was looking forward to, for the two of them together was a pain he wasn’t willing to deal with. And once they had opened a suitable gap between themselves, Aiden sprang into action. *Whish*Aiden displayed speed greater than what he had previously shown. The winds spurred him on as he moved, and soon he was befo
Elder Sand, Marie and Eva travelled leisurely down the street. They didn’t seem to be in any particular hurry. They looked relaxed, like they were on their way to a special dinner, and they sounded relaxed. Well, one of them sounded relaxed, for Elder Sand whistled the entire way. His tone was jovial and upbeat. As for the young man they had left wounded, that didn’t seem to affect his mood in any way.”This is it,” Elder Sand stopped right in front of a large building as he reached into his pocket. He pulled out an old looking compass and tilted it slightly. The needle of the compass moved along with the Elder’s movement. However, the direction it pointed to was the same one it was pointing to from the beginning. It was indeed leading them to the building in front. “Oh? That’s odd.” Elder Sand's vision was glued to the fence right next to him with his eyes slightly squinted. Although his face remained concealed, one could feel the surprise in his tone. His eyes glanced briefly at th
Kylie had another dream. Well, at this point, she spent more time dreaming than she did staying awake; however, this dream was familiar. It was an image she had seen before and one that she did not miss. She did not think she would see this again, but here she was once again, her spirit stranded on this worn-down planet. The red sun in the sky bore down on her and transmitted great heat, for although this was a dream, Kylie could feel the burning fire of the sun. The Legacy candidate of the Lion King tribe tore her eyes away from the sun and cast her eyes to the only figure present on this planet. Unlike her meet dream of this place, there were no enemies today. And unlike the first time, the protagonist of this dream was staring at her.A figure that seemed familiar yet eerily unfamiliar. It was as though she was holding a dystopian mirror before herself, for the person Kylie was looking at was an alternate image of herself. Same face, same figure, same complexion, and the same heigh
“What...is...that?” Razor asked with widened eyes. His arms which held Philip trembled strongly as his transformed skin failed to cope with the scorching heat now present in the hall. Yet even though his fur sizzled and burned, Razor could feel nothing. All that went through his mind was the shock of seeing Kylie in this new form.“Did you know about this?” Jack turned to Davis and asked. “No. Of course not. This is my first time seeing something like this” Davies replied. Both men were stunned by what they were seeing. Jack was using his spear to absorb the heat that threatened to reduce him to ash, for his spear’s origin was related to a creature that loved flames. As for Davies, he was using Jack as a shield by standing as close to him as possible. His response to Jack was not marred with lies, for he indeed had no idea what was going on. He had never seen Kylie in this form before, neither had he seen her radiating so much fury. No...wait. He had seen her show this much anger be
“Those eyes that were formerly lost, are now filled with conviction. They have figured it out.” Bloodlust muttered to herself silently, the pretentious crazed look she had mustered fading into nothingness. Her eyes still held her rage and her quivering from the loss of her brother did not cease, but her hidden wisdom had been pushed to the surface. This change was easy to discern. After all, it was easy to tell when an opponent had suddenly turned cautious.“Don’t worry about her ability to regenerate!” Kylie screamed, not telling the others that Davies held the key to defeating this monster; such a decision would cost them their element of surprise.Unfortunately for Kylie, Bloodlust was keen and sharp. She was unlike her brother. The moment she saw Kylie and Davies exchanging looks and noticed that his demeanour had grown emboldened, she was confident that the two were plotting something. She didn’t know how they had communicated without saying a word, but she would be arrogant to d
Kylie frowned as she watched Bloodlust rapidly approaching. Razor was engaged with the Blood Daemon, keeping her at bay with his powerful blows and tearing her apart with the blades that adorned his arm. Unfortunately, his victim could be so careless with her actions and her attacks. Her swift attacks and careless nature made it difficult for Razor to be as brazen as he usually was, affecting his fighting style. Thankfully, Razor was not alone. Jack was there as well.As someone who had trained more as a marital artist than as a beastman, Jack was more suited to a battle like this. In a battle that required more caution than brazen obliteration of the enemy, Jack was a better fit. Phillip had also crawled out of the wall he had been struck into. While he was not as strong as Razor or as skilled as Jack, he too was used to a more reserved fighting style due to the fact that he had been fighting against opponents stronger than he was for the past few weeks of training prior to the missi
Dark Shadows’ eyes fluttered close as she embraced death. She didn’t think she would die like this but alas, when did she become the decider of her fate? Her greatest delusion had been to underestimate the beastmen because they were young. If she had taken them seriously from the start and actually drawn up a strategy to handle them, even if she had lost, she would have taken half of the team with her. It was unfortunate for the one who ruled these parts to come to this realization while standing on death’s door; however, her death was not filled with only regret.Yes, she had failed to lead properly and caused Slender and Muscles’ death by sending them after opponents who were much too ready for them. Yes, her foolishness and carelessness had led to the death of Breaker, meaning that even if she had survived, the Blood Daemon family would have killed her for her error. And yes, she had brought Bloodlust to tears and broken the spirit of the once reserved girl. These were all things s
For as long as she could remember, she and her brother had been together. From the moment of their birth to the time the family decided that they should go on their pilgrimage, they had been together. That was the life she had grown accustomed to. Her brother’s presence had become a part of her. He was an extension of her image, a mirror that reflected the part of herself that was always suppressed. Her strict nature and bridled character could be maintained because he was free for both of them. Hs carelessness and free spirit made up for her lack of either one thereof, making it easier to reach the level she had reached.Daemons were special. Each one was highly valued, and the Daemon families were powerful in their own right. Much like the Beastmen’s influential tribes, Daemons were the influential families of the Undead, and their elders came from these families. From Speed Daemons to Rage Daemons and Blood Daemons, Daemons were a force to be reckoned with; a force that not even th
“Sh*t” Dark Shadow could not help but swear when she saw Breaker’s head rolling helplessly across the floor. Her eyes flashed coldly as rage and fear overcame every fiber of her being. It was unusual for the two polar opposite emotions to share the same space, but that was exactly what was happening right now. Her eyes sought the figure of the assassin. She wanted to see the one who had been so brave as to venture into her den alone. After all, she didn’t believe that all the beastmen who had been sent this time were assassins. Yet she could not catch a glimpse of the assassin. She roared in rage as she stamped her foot onto the ground, but her rage would not last long. For in no time, a large figure broke through the door of the throne room, blowing it to smithereens, and barged inside with an insidious smile on his face. This person was a beastman covered in spikes. His shaggy mane was reflective of his clan and Dark Shadow knew immediately who was behind this.“The Lion King tribe!
Dark Shadow sat silently upon her throne. Her eyes gazed calmly upon the large chandelier hanging from the centre of the ceiling that had been unused since the time she started living here. After all, what need did an Undead have for light. Whether it was sunlight or artificial light, it did not have a place in their land.“It feels quiet without them here,” Dark Shadow muttered, sighing tiredly.“If Slender and Muscles heard you say this, they would be very pleased,” said an Undead who had just walked into the room.Next to this Undead was another of his kind but of the opposite sex. The two approached Dark Shadow’s throne and knelt before her, offering their respect to their mistress.“Bloodlust greets Mistress Dark Shadow.”“Breaker greets Mistress Dark Shadow.”Looking down upon her two subordinates, Dark Shadow chuckled lightly and gestured for them to stand. These two, Bloodlust and Breaker, were the other two 4 Star Undead under her command. Bloodlust and Breaker were both Bloo
Psycho opened his eyes to the unfamiliar sight of daylight. He squinted naturally, as was expected for a creature more accustomed to the shadows and began to squirm uncomfortably. He wanted to get out of the light and into the darkness. His eyes rapidly sought for shade or shelter, anything that could grant him respite from the scorching heat of the sun that threatened to suck him dry.“Why am I here? And where is the captain?” Psycho wondered as his patched and cracked lips refused to part to even allow him to speak. He didn’t know why he couldn’t move as freely as he wanted, for his eyes were struggling to adapt to the piercing brightness of the sun. He could not see properly. His body just felt unusually heavy. Almost as though there was something keeping him bound. The last time he felt this way was right before he awakened as an Undead. For before he opened his eyes to this world that he knew, his body would not listen to him. Since then, he had clawed his way through the bittern
