Isabel scoffed. “Just admit that you’re upset. Don’t pretend to be a good sport. There’s no one else here. Who are you acting for?”

That comment was a bolt out of the blue to Mona. What did Isabel mean by acting? Was Mona not supposed to offer well-wishes? She guessed she could never do good in Isabel’s eyes.

“Ms. Graham, I’m here to collect my final paycheck. Spare me details of your personal life.”

Giving Isabel the cold shoulder, Mona made a beeline to the finance office.

“Victor, why did you come so early to pick me up?”

In the back, Isabel’s shrill and biting voice suddenly turned soft and tender. Mona got goosebumps. She looked back and saw Victor with a bouquet of flowers. God knew when he arrived.

Paying him no mind, she hurried to the finance office to collect the paycheck.

“Suzy, hold up,” Victor called Mona from behind.
