Chapter Five

All the time he spoke softly to her, reassuring her the way he would a child, when he finished he sat on the bed and looked at her,

‘You don’t know do you?’

 She blinked up at him frowning,

‘Know what?’

She replied and he smiled,

‘So you do speak then’

‘Of course, I do, I, I, well I’m just not used to people’

She looked down pleating the sheet with her hands,

Dr Jacob Lawson was a Rogue, he had been a Pack member but his desire to heal people rather than kill them was at direct odds with his Alpha. He had been forced to choose so he chose medicine, he had been ostracised immediately. Frog marched to the boundary line without even being allowed to say goodbye to his family, not that it mattered they had all turned their backs on him the minute he was cut from the Pack.  It had hurt, going Rogue the pain had been so bad it had almost killed him but he had survived and he loved his job at the hospital. He had a lovely apartment, a wide circle of friends, and a human girlfriend but you are never truly free of the Pack. Wolves are naturally Pack animals, they don’t do well alone and they can scent another of their Species instantly.  

‘What’s your name?’

He asked the frightened girl softly and she eyed him warily before answering cautiously,

‘My name is Lumi’

‘The snow girl’

He whispered gazing at her intently, something niggled at the back of his mind but she said nothing else,

‘Well Lumi, you got hit by a car, mine to be precise, you kind of walked right out in front of me. I was the one who brought you here.’

He smiled at her but she did not return it,

‘Am I hurt?’

He frowned at the question,

‘Well, we thought you were, you had some bruising and x-rays showed fractured ribs, or at least we thought they did.’

She cocked her head to one side and looked up at him through her dark lashes and he had to fight his arousal, she was the most stunningly beautiful woman he had ever encountered,

‘I don’t understand, am I hurt or not?’

She asked and he shook himself,

‘You are not hurt, when we checked you this morning before you came round all your bruising had gone and we did another x-ray and there is no damage to your ribs’

‘Good, if there is nothing wrong with me then I can leave.’

She made to stand up,

‘Can I have my clothes please?’

She was wearing a hospital gown and he said

‘I’m afraid your clothes got quite damaged when you fell, if you give me the number of your family I’ll get someone to call them and bring you some clean clothes.’

He was shocked by her answer,

‘I have no one, if you do not have my clothes then I will just have to use this’

She tugged at the gown and walked to the door,

‘Thank you for helping me’

She said politely and would have left,

‘Wait’

She stopped and looked at him,

‘I’ll find you some clothes from the lost property, do you have anywhere to go?’

He saw her hesitate and then shake her head,

‘Don’t worry about me, I can look after myself’

She flinched away from him when he reached out to touch her,

‘Let me help you’

He said softly but she would not look at him,

‘Why?’

He caught her chin and turned her to look into those incredible blue eyes,

‘Because I understand you, I know what you are and I can help you. When it is your time you will need someone who understands.’

She was about to refuse when Tyka came forward, she had not heard from her since the fight and now she said softly,

‘I think that I trust him, go can with him’

Jacob saw the brief flicker of gold in her sapphire eyes and knew his instincts were correct,

‘Okay, What do you want me to do?’

She looked up at him then and her eyes were mesmerizing, they were so blue he wanted to drown in them,

‘Doctor?’

He had to shake himself again,

‘I’m sorry’

He smiled at her,

‘I’ll get the Nurses to find you some clothes, I finish my shift in an hour and I’ll take you home with me’

She nodded and went back to sit on the bed,

‘Okay,’                                                                                                                                                               She replied trustingly smiling shyly back at him. He moved quickly, telling the Nurses to find her some clothes he completed his rounds wrote up a few notes, and returned to her within the hour. She was dressed in jeans and a pale blue shirt, in a cute pair of dark blue ankle boots with a fringe on them. Her lovely hair was brushed into a ponytail and they had even found her a jacket,

‘Are you ready?’

He took her hand and she followed him silently out of the hospital and into his car, he drove out of the main city into the suburbs and pulled up outside a pretty three-story house. Inside was light and bright and he started to take her up to his spare room, well that was his plan but Lumi had never seen stairs and she stopped at the foot of them and looked at him puzzled,

‘What are they?’

He was stunned and then remembered the rumors he had heard about the seven ‘dwarves’ bringing up a young girl, no one had ever seen her and the miners had kept tight-lipped when questioned refusing to confirm or deny. They were so protective of their home that they had placed CCTV cameras and a fence to keep people out, it had also served to keep Lumi in. It had not been difficult to persuade her it would be dangerous for her to go beyond the fence, she was a child and she had trusted them.

‘Lumi they are stairs, it's so we can reach the upper floors. Come on you are perfectly safe.’

He took her hand and very gingerly she followed him up when he showed her the room she looked around wide-eyed and for the very first time she smiled shyly,

‘I can stay here?’

Jacob grinned back at her, when she smiled her whole face lit up, and if it was possible made her even more beautiful,

‘Yes, this is your room. You are welcome to stay here as long as you want.’

She looked back at him steadily and then shocked him further,

‘You will not come into my room without being asked or follow me into the bathroom will you?’

‘No, of course not’

He responded instantly horrified at her suggestion but he saw the relief in her eyes,
