Sitting next to Noah in the taxi, Serenity’s skin prickled. The pair of demons had been quieter this morning at breakfast, but no less intense. She’d caught Noah watching her on more than one occasion and while she’d usually flipped him off; she suddenly liked the attention. Thorne had left before them, making sure the witch’s house was secure and had messaged when it was.
The cab pulled up outside a small bungalow in a leafy suburb and Noah paid the driver. They climbed out and walked up the path, the door opening as they climbed the steps. Thorne stood in the doorway. “Took your time.”
“Go fuck yourself.” Noah growled, pushing past him and the darker demon turned, watching him. Serenity stopped next to Thorne, and he looked down at her.
“He okay?”
“He hasn’t spoken since you left. The traffic was terrible, and he was silent the whole way.”

Owen scrambled to his feet, smoothing his hands over his shirt and pants, his hands diving into his pockets for only a second, before they came back out, devoid of rings. “There, see, I can’t hurt her again.”Noah watched closely, as Owen stepped closer to her and held out his hand.“I’m sorry, my dear, I need only a small drop of blood.”Serenity’s gaze shifted from Owen, to Noah, then to Thorne. The dark demon nodded, and she looked back at Owen. Sighing, she put out her hand and Owen smiled, guiding her toward the table.Noah was close behind her; an ever-present comfort and she looked back to him for a second. He was not happy. She could see it in his features. His gaze shifted to hers and he frowned. All he had to say, was he didn’t want her doing this, and she would scurry behind Thorne and they could leave.Serenity looked back to Owen as the witch pulled a hat pin out of a bowl on the table an
The bags were packed and sitting by the door. Thorne was pacing, his phone in his hands. Serenity sat on the sofa, her leg bouncing as she watched the demon walking back and forth in front of her.“Where is he?”Thorne shrugged, but didn’t look at her, continuing his pacing. She rolled her eyes and sat back. It’d been almost two hours since they’d left Noah with Owen, the witch. The demons were adamant he was a fake and Noah had gone after him and the hat-pin Owen had used to take some of her blood.Thorne’s phone pinged and he stopped, looking down at it.Serenity climbed to her feet and walked over to him, leaning over, and reading the message.Get out!The phone disappeared into Thorne’s coat, and he looked up at her. “Grab your bag. Now.”She raced to the three duffle bags and grabbed the smaller one, as Thor
Serenity’s hand gripped Thorne’s tighter and the demon squeezed hers in reassurance. At least she was safe… with one of her guardians. The thought of Noah being in danger slammed into her mind and she stopped, her hand slipping from Thorne’s. He stopped and turned back to her. The red lights were barely enough to see what he was signing. “Serenity.”“Is he okay?”Thorne’s head turned to the sound of fighting, before he looked back to her. “Yes.”“Are you sure?”“Serenity, Noah is fine. Trust me.”“How can you be so sure?”Thorne stepped closer, his figure imposing and for the first time since she’d met him, he was intimidating. “Because I’ve known him for over a century. He’s fine. He’s one of the most dangerous individuals I know.”Serenity blinked
Dodging past the angels as Thorne had started to fight them had been easy.Running to the other end of the corridor had been easy too.But what hadn’t been easy was leaving Thorne behind, to fight the pair of angels. Especially when she heard the renting screams which echoed down the corridor behind her.Bursting out into the open, Serenity slid to a halt and stared at the carnage which met her.Blood, bodies, and the damaged car, which was supposed to take her and Thorne to safety. The angels had slaughtered the demons which had been waiting. Flies were starting to hover over the carcasses, and she didn’t know if she wanted to stick around for long, especially if the sirens in the distance, were coming this way. She’d avidly avoided the police when she could help it.Skipping to the side, she skirted the blood and bodies and started to run toward the pen road, her mind on only one thing. To run and hide and try to get hold
“Serenity?”Noah’s voice pulled her from the nap she’d drifted into and Serenity snapped awake, jumping to her feet. "Noah!"The pair of demons were near the end of the alley and they stopped at the sight of her. She ran down the alley and threw her arms around the demon’s neck, hugging him and Noah’s arms wrapped around her, holding her for a moment. “Hey, it’s okay. We’re here.”Serenity stepped back, looking up at the blond. “I thought you were—”“Whose blood is that?” Thorne signed, stepping closer and Noah stepped forward, his hands going to her face, tilting to the side, pushing back some of her hair, then looking down over the rest of her, bfore his hands came to a rest on her shoulders.“Are you okay? What happened? Whose blood is this?”Serenity looked down at her soaked shirt and jeans. She was caked in blood, as if she ha
Serenity waited for Noah. He was in the motel office, paying for a room. She was hiding down the side of the building, keeping out of sight.“We’ve got a ground floor room for the next two days. It’ll be enough until Thorne and Patrick find us something.” Noah handed her the key and took her bag. They moved quickly down the path and she unlocked the door, slipping into the motel room.It smelt of old soap, cheap wine, and something… musty.“Great, it smells like a cheap hooker in here.” Noah closed the door behind him and put her bag on the only bed in the room. “And it’s only got one bed. Fucking wonderful.”Serenity turned and watched the demon as he walked through the small door and into the bathroom. Soon the sound of running water and he returned, tipping the bag onto the bed.Jeans, shirt, underwear…Serenity frowned at the sight of the underwear and Noah’s head
The factory Patrick had found was not what Serenity was expecting.Lined with lead and looking run down from the outside. The inside was vastly different.Separated into three stories, the base floor held a training area, a small garage, and a weapons room. The middle floor had a kitchen, bathroom and living area and the top floor had three bedrooms and a small nook, which held a multitude of bookshelves.“Noah said you like to read.”Serenity looked to Patrick, as his hand ghosted over spines of the books and she nodded. “I like to know what I’m up against. What is in store for me.”Patrick chuckled, as Thorne walked past, arms laden with boxes. “You’re not going to find it in these, lass. Believe me.”She frowned.“You’ll find about half of what’s going on. The rest, you’re going to have to wing, with these two lummoxes.”Noah flipped Patrick off, a
“From here onward, we’re going to train.” Noah picked up the staff and twirled it in his hand. “You’ve got to be able to fight both physically, and mentally.”He stepped forward and handed Serenity the staff. She took it, aware of its weight and the steady gaze of Thorne, sitting stiffly off to the side. He would only supervise her training, not engage in it himself.“First lesson will be basic self-defense, with a staff.”Serenity turned her head back to Noah, just as he lifted the hem of his shirt and peeled it off, over his head, and reached for a staff. The black fabric dropped to the matting and Serenity blinked at the toned muscles which greeted her vision.Taut pecs, spotted with dark nipples, smooth planes of flesh which turned into washboard abs, which in turn, dipped into the waistband of his grey tracksuit pants.“Hey, Skin Writer. Eyes up here.”Serenity’s gaze sna
“I’m not so sure about this…” Serenity’s arms itched in the linen gown she’d been dressed in. Thorne and Noah flanked her, still in their own clothing, looking comfortable, while she itched like crazy. “Why don’t you two have shitty gowns to wear?”Neither of them spoke, and Serenity huffed.“This is bullshit.”The three of them followed Claudette and the guard which had guided them earlier, back up the steps of the catacombs, through the Ministry and to a large hall. Stepping inside, she felt the pair of demons bristle at the sheer number of people in the hall.“Claudette…” Noah warned, and the woman smiled, showing brilliant white teeth.“Come Noah, surely you would remember the need of witnesses? Six-hundred and sixty-six, if I’m not mistaken?”Serenity looked around the hall.Six-hundred and sixty-six hunters… “Noah
Claudette was a stunning, waif-like creature with pale skin and dark hair. Her eyes were moss, bordering on lime green and she dressed like Morticia Adams in a skin hugging black dress with long flowing sleeves. Her presence was undeniable. An impression of pure power, in a small vessel.Noah stopped just shy of the woman and her gaze slipped to him, mischief playing in her green orbs. “When I next saw you, I was hoping for something with a little less clothing, Noah.”Serenity’s face heated and she looked away as Noah replied, “You know that time has long gone, Claudette. It’s never going to happen.”Serenity looked back to the pair, as Noah stepped back from the with and turned his head, looking back to her. “This is Serenity.”Claudette’s now cold gaze shifted from Noah, to her and Serenity all but wilted under her gaze, wanting to hide under Thorne’s funnel coat. The woman loo
The further into the Ministry they ventured, the sicker Serenity felt. The halls were lined with doors, leading to god-knew what and Serenity stopped thinking about the torture which may be happening behind the closed doors, after the tenth.Noah was by her side, still holding her hand, Thorne was behind them, a hulk of a guard who seemed to radiate a calm she did not feel. this place was disgustingly... fridgid. There was a air to it which had her skin prickling with fear. The guard which had seen to them at the door, led them through the Ministry’s main rooms and deeper down into the catacombs. The limestone walls were grey with slimy green mold growning on them. A scent of water hung in the air, wet and sour and the underlying scent of copper made Serenity's stomach churn. It was the scent of blood...“Charming place. Wonder where the skeletons are kept?”” She muttered under her breath, earning a chuckle from Noah. Serenity
The Ministry. The one place in the entire world, Serenity didn’t want to be.But there she was, squashed between two hulking demons, driving through the wrought iron gates to see a witch. At any other time, she might have laughed—right now, she was terrified.Noah put his hand out, taking hers and she looked up at the demon in surprise. “It’s going to be fine, Serenity. Claudette knows what she’s doing.”“It’s not her I’m worried about,” Serenity hissed. “It’s the fucking Hunters who work for her. You know, the ones who have been hunting me since I was a child?”Noah’s lips pursed and he turned his head, looking out the window at the grey and black stone cathedral which towered over the countryside. It looked out of place in the bright air of L.A and was closed to the public. Most people thought it was an eccentric billionaire’s mansion, some thought it
Feeling a little better, even though her muscles ached, Serenity ventured out of her room and down to the kitchen.Thorne was standing next to the bench, his back to her, his coat hanging open. She didn’t say anything, just watched as he picked up a cup and moved it to the front of him. When it returned to the counter, it was empty. The coat buckled closed and Thorne turned, his gaze meeting hers.“Does it hurt?”“What?”“Eating and drinking the way you have to. When was the last time you tasted food?”Thorne shrugged. “I can’t remember.”Serenity bit her lip and Thorne’s gaze dropped to her mouth, before lifting back to her slowly. She tilted her head to the side. “I’m sorry, for earlier. For putting you to sleep.”“I’m glad you did. It was starting to hurt. It’s becoming harder and harder to replace the
It had been well over six hours since Thorne had shown her why he wore the coat and Serenity was still having trouble comprehending it. Wandering through the apartment, she searched for her pair of demons, she still needed shit clarified. And she wasn’t going to let them fob her off this time.Climbing the steps, she stopped on the landing for the bedrooms and listened. Maybe they were asleep…“Hold still, jeez.”She headed toward Thorne’s room and strained her hearing.“I know it’s uncomfortable, and waving your fucking hands at me, isn’t going to change it.”Serenity blinked as she heard a grunt and stepped back.“For fuck sake, Thorne. I can’t get it in—”She pushed open the door and stopped at the scene in front of her. While she didn’t quite know exactly what she was expecting… seeing Thorne on his back on his bed, while the blonde held a
Serenity couldn't keep quiet any longer. She had to ask Noah, the question which had been eating at her for the last few hours. Why Thorne was like he was and who was the man/creature who did it. “Who is Archon, and why did he sew Thorne’s mouth shut?”Noah froze, his eyes widenening as he stared down at the book in his hands. He finally lifted his gaze to her, eyes still wide and asked, “He told you?”Heat raced across Serenity's cheeks and she shook her head. “No… he showed me.” She said, moving across the room and threw herself down onto the sofa. Thorne had left the factory, telling her he was going on patrol. Honestly, she thought it was because he didn't want to be around her, anymore. “Why did Archon do it?”It was a few minutes before Noah replied. “Archon is blood-thirsty.”That wasn't the answer Serenity wanted and she peered at him. “All angels are blood
“So, what are you?” Serenity leaned against the bench, coffee in hand and looked at Thorne. Noah had gone out for food again. She didn’t know why he couldn’t just get groceries. She knew how to cook.Thorne narrowed his gaze at her. “A demon.”She rolled her eyes. “I know that. But what kind of demon? Are you a regular demon, or a imp, or an incubus?”The last one was said a lot softer than she intended and Thorne rose and eyebrow. “We’re not incubus, if that’s what worries you.”Serenity frowned, trying to keep the disappointment from her face. She almost hoped he said they were. Not that she would willingly let them do… hell, yes. She would. And she hadn’t even seen Thorne’s face properly. Her gaze lifted to Thorne and she stood straighter, stepping closer to him.“Being one of my guardians…You have to do what I say?&rd
The following couple of hours after the training, had been fairly quiet. Serenity had been reading, Thorne had been sitting quietly, and Noah had gone out...Secret squirrel stuff he had put it.Thoren had clarified that Noah had gone to meet with some of the Gernerals of the Horde and not doubt would come back in a foul mood.He was right.“Well, Deri’amas isn’t impressed.” Noah sank into the sofa opposite her and Serenity looked up from the book. He was brooding.... again. It seemed to be a perpetual state Noah was in.“About?”“Owen.”She looked at Thorne. He hadn’t moved in hours. Just sat on the sofa opposite her and watched her read. While for the first little while, it’d been weird and annoying, she’d quickly gotten used to it. “Owen was my fault. I didn’t check him over properly.”“Yeah, he said that
