Alissia POV

Jake drops down onto the couch, his eyes narrowing at the piece of paper filled with lists. He picks it up, reading over it, and a small laugh escapes him. “What is all this?” He looks at me, shaking his head.

“Oh, you know, just a list of random people who could kill us that Alissia wants to shadow for a week,” Jenni chimes in with a chuckle.

Jake raises an eyebrow, turning his amused gaze back to me. “Right, okay. Sounds fun. Why am I here?”

“For that reason, Jake. I need your help,” I say, my voice more serious than I intended. His eyes flicker with curiosity.

“Help with what?” His expression turns cautious.

“I need to find out how to get on the dark web and talk to people there,” I say, holding my breath, waiting for the laughter.

And he doesn’t disappoint. He laughs so hard his head tilts back. But when he looks at me again and sees my expression hasn’t changed, his smile fades. “Shit, you’re being serious?”

I nod. “Yeah, I am.”

Jake stares at me like I’ve grown a second head. “Why the hell do you want to be on the dark web?”

I explain everything to him—the book, the research, the wild idea that’s been growing in my mind ever since Jenni’s offhand joke turned into my next great plan. I spill the whole thing, hoping he’ll understand.

He listens quietly, but the disapproval is etched across his face. “Alissia,” he says slowly, “this is a crazy idea. The dark web isn’t like the normal internet. You’ll see some disturbing shit there, stuff you can’t unsee. It’s not exactly a place to browse for inspiration.”

“I know,” I say, leaning forward. “But I need to do this. I can’t write another book that flops. This... this is going to give me the authenticity I need. Please, Jake. I’m begging you.”

He sighs, leaning back against the couch and rubbing the back of his neck. “You don’t get it. Asking to shadow a criminal, any type of criminal, on the dark web is a huge red flag. Even if you’re careful, there’s always a chance someone could trace your activity. People could figure out who you really are. It could come back to bite you in ways you don’t want.”

I bite my lip, my stomach churning at his words, but I don’t back down. “I understand the risks, Jake. But I need this. You know I’ve tried everything else.”

He watches me for a moment, then sighs again, running a hand through his hair. “You’re insane. Absolutely out of your mind.” After a beat, he nods. “Fine. I’ll set it up. But I’m telling you, this could go bad. Really bad.”

My heart jumps in my chest as he pulls his laptop from his bag and sets it on the table. “Okay,” he says, plugging in a USB stick. “First, I’m downloading the Tor browser. That’s your gateway to the dark web. It routes your internet traffic through layers of encryption, bouncing it off random servers so it’s hard to trace. Think of it like an onion with layers of protection.”

He clicks through a few settings, setting up the Tor browser on my laptop. “Next, I’m connecting you to a VPN.” He types rapidly, pulling up a screen I don’t understand. “This makes your connection more secure by masking your IP address. Think of it like a disguise. It won’t make you invincible, but it’ll hide your real location.”

I nod along, trying to absorb everything he’s telling me, though most of it goes over my head.

“Okay, now you’ll be able to access dark web sites. They usually end in ‘.onion.’ But this isn’t like regular browsing. You need to know the specific addresses to find anything worthwhile.” He glances at me. “Don’t just go clicking around on random links. Trust me, there’s some really dark stuff out there. Stick to what you’re looking for.”

He clicks through a few more security settings, installing an extra layer of encryption. “I’m trying to make your connection as secure as possible, but nothing’s guaranteed. You still need to be careful. This is dangerous territory.”

Once he’s finished, he leans back, giving me a hard look. “There. You’re in. But remember what I said—no matter what you do, there’s always a chance someone could break through your system and figure out who you are. This isn’t a game, Alissia. Never give your real details.”

I swallow hard, the weight of what I’m about to do sinking in. “I understand, Jake. I’ll be careful.”

He shakes his head, clearly unconvinced, but doesn’t argue further. “Good luck. You’re going to need it.”

Jake walks off with Jenni, leaving me alone in the living room with my laptop. The sound of their footsteps fades as the door clicks shut behind them. I take a deep breath and turn my attention back to the screen, the glow of the dark web forum casting an eerie light in the dim room.

I scroll cautiously through the posts, being careful not to click on anything with attachments. I’ve heard enough horror stories about the kind of things people post here—graphic images of dead animals or worse. I’m not here for that. I’m here to find inspiration, but my gut twists as I read a few of the posts. The casual mentions of violence, the dark humor. This is... bad. Really bad. But I’m here now, and I can’t back down. I have to do this.

I click “New Post,” and a blank form pops up on the screen. My fingers hover over the keyboard for a moment before I start typing the title.

Looking for one of the following.

My hands are sweating, but I push through, hitting the content box and starting to type again.

Author here! This is going to sound like some crazy-ass request, but I’m at a loss, and I don’t believe all criminals are evil—not entirely anyway.

I pause, rereading the line. It sounds ridiculous. It is ridiculous. But I can’t stop now. I keep typing.

So, here it is. I want to write a dark romance story. After many flops—not because of my writing, more like people just aren’t interested because my books aren’t different enough—I had another idea.

I want to shadow one of the people listed below. I know that sounds crazy, but to write a dark romance with a character who leads one of these lives isn’t easy. I want it to be accurate.

So, yeah. If anyone can help, that would be amazing. I promise total secrecy—nothing you do will be brought up in the book. All the situations will be fictional, but I will draw upon my time with you as inspiration.

Please don’t find me, stalk me, kidnap me, and murder me thinking I’m some weirdo trying to... well, I don’t even know.

BTW, I’m Nova 😉, which is my pseudonym for my books. Here’s the list of who I’m hoping to contact. Even just one would be amazing!

Torturer/Interrogator

Kidnapper-for-Hire

Underground Fighter

Mafia Boss

Cartel Leader

Serial Killer

Black Market Dealer

Stranger Stalker

I tag a few extra words, plus some usernames that seem like they might fit, just in case any of them are genuine. My heart races as I read over the post one last time. This is insane. This is... so insane. But it’s out there now.

I hesitate for a split second before hitting “Post.”

And just like that, it’s done.

I stare at the screen, my heart hammering in my chest. Holy fucking shit. I’ve done it. I’ve actually put out a request to shadow real criminals on the dark web. I can’t believe I’ve gone through with this. The post sits there, glowing on the forum, like an invitation to chaos.

What have I just done?

What if this post is the beginning of something that gets me hurt—or worse? My gut twists again, and I feel the weight of my reckless decision settling in. But despite the fear, there’s an undeniable thrill that rushes through me. This is exactly what I need to stand out, to write the story that could finally get me noticed. No turning back now.I watch the screen, my heart pounding in my chest as pings start echoing through the silence of the apartment. New guards are hard to find, ones who stick to the rules and live long enough are even harder to find. I consider it, sighing as I shake my head in disappointment. “Such a fucking waste. He was a good little guard,” I mutter, stepping over the mangled body parts, the smell in the air is like metal and rot. “Little guard?” Tony, my personal butcher, chuckles, wiping his blood-soaked hands on a rag that’s already stained. His usual smirk twists his face. “This guy had more meat on him than anyone you’ve ever brought me. You call that little?” He kicks part of the guard like it’s a slab of pork.I sigh again and nod, crouching down to pick up one of the hands. “True, but look at these hands.” I toss it to Tony, who catches it mid-air with a laugh. The fingers look like sausages, bloated and useless.“Fuck, could he even hold one of your guns with these sausages?” His wor

Probably because I cut out his tongue a while ago. The sound is just a sickening gargle, thick with blood and desperation. He’s begging for his life, but it’s too late for that now.The thing is… I wasn’t planning to kill Paul. There was no meticulous plot, no months of stalking or calculating every move. Hell, I barely know him. We’ve spoken a few times, shared a few thoughts on the dark web. I sometimes get hired to kill, but usually, I pick my own victims—ones that spark something inside me.Unlucky for Paul, today he said the wrong thing. Mentioned the wrong name.Nova.And here we are.I sigh, patting his shoulder like we’re old friends. “I’m sorry, Paul. Blake’s POVThe dark web is my playground, a hunting ground where I find the darkest, deepest secrets of my obsessions. It’s a place where anonymity rules, and I can hire just about anyone to dig up whatever I need on my next victim. The thrill of knowing every intimate detail about someone before they even realize they’re being watched—that’s where the power lies.My victims are chosen with precision. There’s no randomness to it, no impulsive picks. Most of the time, I don’t even need to touch them. The true thrill comes from the psychological torment. Watching them unravel, seeing the fear in their eyes when they notice the small, seemingly innocent changes in their home. That coffee cup moved slightly. The window that wasn’t open yesterday, but now is. The sense of being watched without proof—it’s better than any physical violence. My method is meticulous. Every victim must follow a strict routine. They need to work a standard schedule, so I have time to infiltrate their space with

Blake POVI’m patient. I’m careful. I make them doubt their reality before they ever realize what’s truly happening. That’s why my method works so much better than anyone else’s. Most stalkers want the rush of the chase, the quick gratification of a confrontation. They can’t resist the temptation to show their hand too soon. But me? I enjoy the slow burn. I take my time, watching their lives fall apart from the inside, all while they’re looking over their shoulder, trying to figure out where the danger is coming from.By the time they realize the answer, it’s already too late.Well, that was how I do things.Sitting here, I read Nova’s message again and again, like she’s calling out to be stalked. To be chased, to be hunted. It’s not how I usually find my victims, not how I play my games. But there she is, practically offering herself up on a silver platter. She wants to know what it’s like to be a stalker? Maybe I should make her my next victim, just to show her what it really means.

Alissia POVI wake up early—five o’clock early. Who in their right mind wants to meet at 6 a.m.? Last night, Jenni told me it’s likely because it’s quiet—easier to kill me without people seeing or hearing. That lovely thought clings to me as I lie there, staring at the ceiling, wondering if I’ve completely lost it.Everything in my mind is screaming at me to stop. To shut this down, to not meet these people, to walk away. It’s insane, and any rational person would probably run. But I can’t. There’s this part of me, the part I admit is fucking stupid and not sane, that keeps whispering, Think of the book. Think of how popular it’ll be when people find out the truth behind it.I know it’s crazy. And yet, here I am.I drag myself out of bed and stand in front of my laptop, staring at it like it’s the enemy. Last night freaked me out. Someone hacked into my laptop—my laptop! Blake POVThe backyard is alive with laughter and music, a celebration buzzing with life. Today is Zane’s third birthday, and he’s tearing across the lawn, his little legs pumping as he darts between the tables. Not far behind him is Elijah, toddling as fast as he can to keep up with his older brother, his green eyes wide with excitement. I watch them both, my chest tightening with pride and love I never thought I’d feel.Demitri’s over by the grill, chatting with Axel while flipping burgers, and Lucas is putting up the last of the decorations that Alissia decided we “needed” at the last minute. As for Alissia, she’s cradling Keziah in her arms, bottle-feeding her while keeping a close eye on our two sons as they play. The whole scene is something I never dreamed would be mine—kids, family, this sense of belonging that goes deeper than I can put into words.Alissia made sure it was as close to a regular kids party as possible, no overly priced locations, just something simple at home

Axel leans against the door, arms crossed, his expression one of quiet amusement, a glint in his eye that tells me he’s up to something.“What, Axel?” I murmur, keeping my voice low to avoid disturbing Keziah.“Nothing,” he replies, though the smirk says otherwise. I narrow my eyes at him, and he finally chuckles, unable to hold back. “You know she’s three months old now, right?” he says, raising an eyebrow.I frown, not quite following. I grab my coffee, nodding for him to follow me as I head out of the kitchen. “And?” I prompt, confused by his insinuation. He shrugs, his grin widening. “I was just thinking… after Zane was born, you three were so caught up in the whole baby frenzy that you kinda… forgot a key point about Alissia. In the center, an elaborate medallion design is inlaid, drawing the eye and adding a touch of artistry to the already lavish setting. Along the walls are portraits in gilded frames, each one depicting figures from history or perhaps ancestors I’ll never know. The sconces beside each painting cast a soft, ambient light, illuminating the dark wood paneling that lines the walls and lends an air of timeless elegance.I stand there, awestruck, and feel Demitri’s hand rest lightly on the small of my back, guiding me further inside. “Welcome home,” he murmurs, his voice gentle, yet filled with a pride that’s unmistakable.Turning to face him, I still can’t quite process what I’m seeing. “This… all of this… it’s ours?” I whisper, my voice barely more than a breath.“Yes,” Blake chimes in with a grin. “A real home for all of us, and a place where our family can grow.”Lu
