Her eyes never closed that night she kept them glued to the ceiling. The following morning she felt as if they didn't belong to her. They were swollen and dark circles were outlined underneath. But her eyes were the least of her problems. Her mood was down, she was no longer vibrant or happy. She fought hard to get out of bed. She felt like someone stabbed her multiple times with a bread knife in her stomach. She was famished and her stomach felt like it was infested with tiny insects.

"Aurora!" Came her mother's weak voice. "There is a package outside for you darling."

Her sluggish eyes grew wider and anger invaded her body. She Sprang off the bed and rushed to the other room where her mother and sister awaited her presence. But her headache intensified and she slumped to the floor holding her throbbing head.

"Aurora!" Ella ran to aid her sick daughter. Her blue orbs welled with tears when she noticed how exhausted Aurora looked. She was overwhelmed by guilt and shame. But she was unwell and feeling that way couldn't resolve their issues. "You look unwell."

Aurora managed to pick herself from the floor and planted a reassuring smile on her face, though her mother saw beyond that. "I'm alright mother."

"You should stay home today Aurora. You work too hard."

"I'm alright mother."

"Oh please," Violet mumbled rolling her green orbs before storming out of the room with an aggravated look.

"What did you say about a package." Aurora was quick to change the subject. She wanted the attention to be diverted to something else other than her wellbeing. A smile crept onto her mother's face for the first time in days and her dull eyes lit up with excitement.

"We're you not going to tell me about that mystery man of yours."

Auroras eyes widened with shock. "Mother what are you talking about."

Ella grabbed her hands and pulled her into the kitchen where a huge bouquet of red roses where placed in a vase on the oak wood table. Aurora gritted her teeth in embarrassment and her cheeks turned a deep shade of red. Her mother thought she had a secret relationship. But Aurora was neither interested in relationships nor men. She was more fixed on building her self-esteem and morals as a strong female. Men only pried on females for one reason, to fulfill their desires. Men were naive, possessive, and selfish. Aurora had much on her plate to handle than to pick add more than she could manage.

She knew who the man was that sent the flowers. It was the same gentleman that visited her at the flower shop the previous day. He had been stalking her for the past few months by visiting her workplace and dropping off gifts at her home. Aurora had managed to scare off many men but this one in particular always came back. She thought he would have lost interest in her after a few weeks like the other men. But she was proven wrong. She would specifically search for him and give him a piece of her mind. She bawled her tiny fists and gritted her teeth.

"The man was even nice enough to buy us food." Her mother continued to say.

"I don't want any of it mother." She grabbed the flowers from the table harshly. " Where did you put the food?"

Ella hesitated for a minute finding with her fingers. "We were unable to eat a proper meal for the last few months Aurora and it would be rude of us to return it."

She rolled her eyes in annoyance and her grip grew tighter around the vase. "What are you trying to say, mother? That whatever I provide for this family isn't good enough?"

Ella opened her mouth to speak but no words came. She was scared her words would only worsen the current situation. The last thing Ella needed was for Aurora to think wrongfully of her.

"Where is the food mother? Give it to me I'm returning them."

"Aurora!" She took in a deep breath. "It would be an insult to the young man. Take a minute to think this through."

"How do you think I feel about a strange man giving did to my family without my permission."

"Don't be a spoilt brat Aurora. You should appreciate the fact that a man still takes interest in you after what you did." She scolded pointing her index at Aurora.

"Whatever I did save your life be grateful." Her heartbeat accelerated and her jugular vein was prominent to the naked eyes. Her grip on the vase tightened more and more until it smashed into tiny pieces. She winced as splinters bored deep into her skin. The once spotless floor was filled with her crimson red blood. She was puzzled as to why the vase was able to break in her grasp. Maybe it was faulty she thought.

Her mother looked at the girl's terrified expression and reluctantly aided her wounds. Ella was horrified about what was happening to her daughter but she didn't allow it to get the best of her. She managed to dress all Aurora's wounds but she was still feeling excruciating pain.

Ella handed her a mug with a dark-looking liquid. "For the pain."

"What is this?" Aurora scrunched her nose in disgust after taking the first sip. She felt like throwing up after taking the first sip. Not only did it look unpleasant for ingestion it also smelled and tasted bad. She stopped her breath and gulped the remaining. In an instant, all her pains subsided and her eyes opened. She felt energetic and alive. "Are you going to at least tell me what this is?"

"Tea."

"Well, this must be some special tea." She examined her left hand that was wrapped in a bandage. There was no way a simple tea could take all her pain in a split second. She felt as if her mother was trying to hide something.

"It's going to rain today." Ella looked up at the dark angry clouds that began to form in the sky. "I think you should take a day off, Aurora." Aurora wrapped the cloak over her mother's shoulder and shrugged knowing her mother's suggestion was not effective. Her employer was stingy and selfish and he would happily deduct a huge sum of money from her small wage and as a punishment the man would force her to work overtime. Ella pinched the bridge of her nose and said. "You work too hard darling. I'm sure your employer won't mind if you do take the day off." "It's clear you don't know what my employer is like, mother." Aurora clenched her fist as images of what her boss tried to do the previous day flashed in front of her vision. "He's an old friend of mine, Aurora. I'm sure he wouldn't mind you skipping a day." She crossed her arms and peered at her daughter intensely. "Is something the matter with you?" She swallowed a lump t

Violet sprang from the bed as if it burned her skin a scowl embedded on her face. Her cold gaze landed on Aurora."What do you mean by it's not my time?""I mean your significant other will find you when the time is right." Aurora shrugged trying to find the right words. She did not want to upset her older sibling any further, knowing she could easily turn into something vicious in a matter of seconds.Violet frowned deeply. "I'm almost twenty-one years old and no man has ever glanced in my direction twice." Her voice was weary as she spoke. she slumped onto the edge of her squeaky bed and released a breath."That's not true, Violet," Aurora said as memories of how Felix placed his undivided attention on Violet. The boy would trail behind her like a lost puppy hoping she would notice him. But Violet was too preoccupied with her beauty to take notice of the boy."Tell me the name of one man that ever noticed me." She folded her arms and puckered

Aurora thought hard about what she was told by her sister that morning, all the way to work. She felt as if her head was about to explode any minute. Still, she was unable to make sense of anything.Maybe she was overreacting. The situation couldn't be that bad. But by just thinking about the disappointed look that masked Violet's face, she knew her sister didn't take the situation lightly. She felt horrible because men never ran from her after she introduced herself. On the other hand, she envied her sister for even having the ability to let men run from her naturally without her having to find alternatives to scare them off. Thus, she wished she were in Violet's position since she didn't want to be in a relationship. She was still left in the dark about Violet's situation. She could tell her sister was hiding something from her. But she couldn't stick around any longer to find out what it was. She had to ensure she arrived at work early to get her creepy

He pulled away from her and straightened his posture when the bell dangled above the wooden door. Aurora used the distraction as an opportunity to scurry as far away from her perverted employer. She rounded the counter and plastered a fake smile on her lips as she greeted the customer.A woman who seemed to be in her late fifties strolled into the tiny shop. A broad smile plastered over her lips. She was oblivious to what was taking place. She even failed to take notice of Aurora's discomfort. Her gaze landed on her employer."Mr. Rogan." She said smiling over at the man."Mrs. V." He smiled over at her. "Looking as young as ever."She giggled like a schoolgirl and her cheeks turned a shade of pink. "It's all good food and great exercise, my dear. You should try it out yourself." She eyed him up and down but her smile never faltered but his smile did. He excused himself afterward when an awkward silence fell between the two.Aurora wanted to

°Flashback°"Grandma!" Aurora had a huge smile spread across her lips as she ran to greet her grandmother. She picked up the little girl in her arms and kissed her forehead. "Grandma bought you a gift.""Really!" Her face lit up and she smiled showing her missing tooth. "What is it, grandma?" She asked."Not so fast Aurora." She chuckled. "You will have to guess this one"Her grandmother always brought her gifts from her adventures. They were often of no use to the girl because she didn't know what they were used for. But she was always ecstatic to receive her grandmother's gifts."Is it a dog?" She asked her grandma since she always wanted an animal to play with. She was often lonely and had no one to play with most of the time. Her only friend was their neighbor's son Felix. But Felix gathered her sister's company than hers."No, try again.""Oh." Aurora is that you?"She promptly closed the cellar door and scurried around to the veranda where her mother stood anxiously with a cloak covering her shoulders."Yes, mother I'm home." She said rubbing her arm up and down to put some warmth into her body."Where the bloody hell were you?" Ella placed her hand over her chest with a frightened look on her face. " I was so worried about you."Aurora thought of a lie to feed Ella but she couldn't think of one that made much sense. Telling Ella about the incident with Mr.Roger would cause a huge problem. So she decided to be honest but not completely." I arrived at work super late this morning and I decided I wanted to work overtime." She said leaving out the part in which she was forced to work overtime. Ella engulfed her in a bone-crushing hug."I'm just glad you are alright. Don't scare me like that ever again." Her voice wobbled as she spoke. "You are soaking wet. Let's get you

The huge animal growled at Ella. Aurora could feel the growl of the large animal vibrating in her chest. She was both scared for Ella and herself. She brought the huge animal into their home and not only that, but she also placed her family in great danger. She stared at the drooling animal that was pinning her mother to the floor. Adrenaline coursed through her stomach, speeding up her heart rate. At that moment she didn't know what to do. Should she try to kill the animal? Or should she stand and watch as it made a meal out of her mother? And then make a meal out of her and use her bones for a toothpick.'oh dear lord' she gulped. She swallowed the lump that formed at the back of her throat. "My lady I beg you to reconsider." Fredrigo pleaded. "This part of the village is not safe. There aren't a lot of masculine in these parts. I can offer your family the protection you need."She cringed inwardly at the thought of her staying in Fredrigo's house. She was too wise to fall into his trap. She knew it was harsh to falsely accuse him of forcing that animal to attack her. The idea even sounded vague to her all of a sudden. A sensation she knew too well as guilt over came her. Staring at him she noticed how troubled he looked. Could it really mean that he was concerned about her family? Or was he using their vulnerability as an advantage to steal his way into her heart?Knowing men all too well she decided to stick with option two. Men would do anything in there power to get a woman's attention. She learned that through her readings. Her thoughts drifted back to when she was harassed by her former employer. She couldn't afford to face that faith again. It was too much for a

She heard talking but it sounded so muffled. She couldn't make out what the voice was saying. A grown left her lips when she tried to move her hands. Pain coursed through her body and her head felt like it was being hammered. She tried to open her eyes but her vision was blurry. Was I dead? She thought to herself. There was no other way to explain the agonizing pain she was feeling. She was expecting to feel the coldness of the ground and complete darkness but what she felt was warmth and comfort. She could also see fractions of light from under her heavy eyelids. Another groan left her lips and she grabbed her pounding head and forced herself to sit up. "She awake!" She heard the surprised voice of her sister before she was embraced with a hug. "Thank goodness." Ella sighed and rushed to aid her sick daughter. " Relax honey, you bumped your head pretty badly." Her eyes fluttered open and she was greeted by her mother's dull, lifeless eyes. A worried expression clouded her face.

Aurora sat beside Violet on the bed. She caressed ber shoulder and gave her a side hug."I don't think mom approves of anything, Violet. " She said.Apart of her was hoping her sister was in love with Felix. Felix was the only man that knew Violet's worth. Other men would only go after her, because of her good looks. Men only cared about women that looked appealing in their arms. Most men were egocentric thus Violet would be treated like a puppet on a string. She wouldn't be granted her freedom. Aurora wanted what was best for her older sister. And she knew Felix was that good she needed. Females in the village relied heavily on traditions and Aurora knew it was what held them back. Females believed men should rule their lives while Aurora on the other hand thought otherwise. She knew her mother had to be paid a good sum of money since she insisted on marrying off the youngest child first. Normally it was the oldest that went first. No one wanted to leave their oldest child unwed, th

"Have you tested the waters before you start complaining?" Aurora furrowed her eyebrows and asked Felix. He lifted his shoulder and dropped it. Uncertainty was as clear as day on his face. "Violet wants a better life than the one she's living and I cannot give that to her." He said with a sigh. Aurora knew what Felix said was true. Her sister wanted a man that could give her pretty expensive stuff. Felix's small wage couldn't do much but Aurora thought that maybe Violet would open her eyes and notice that there was someone who still notice her. Aurora didn't know where her sister got that silly idea of hers. If men were running away from her, why was Felix still there? Why won't she notice him? "You do have a point but you are doing more harm than good when you conceal your feelings." Aurora said. She was never in love but she knew a thing or two from the books she read to know that love was a dangerous feeling. It is good in many ways but in some circumstances, it can be a danger

She managed to eat the rice but burned herself in the process. She didn't see her mother that morning before she left for work and she was thankful, she couldn't face her after what happened yesterday. "Or should I make one for her?""She's just a child you know." She wiped the tears that flowed down her cheeks with her worn-out handkerchief. She knew Aurora would not forgive her if she forced her to go through the marriage. And maybe even in the future when she found out the reason, she still wouldn't forgive her."No child behaves the way Aurora does and I would be an idiot to let her slip through my fingers."
