Chapter 9 - Hollyn

I awoke in the dark even though light was pouring into the room. It crept towards my feet as I watched. I wanted to pull away. Wrap myself in the blanket someone had thrown over me and jump from the top of Thane's building.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid, Hollyn. I couldn't believe I'd shared that much of my life with him. I must have looked like such an idiot, cowering between his bed and a small set of drawers. Why he needed three drawers right next to his bed was another question, but it could wait until I'd climbed from the pit of boiling shame that was currently my life.

I rolled towards the light. Even my unconscious mind must have felt the crippling embarrassment, otherwise I wouldn't have managed to be completely under the massive bed. As soon as the fresh air of the chilly room settled over my skin, I bounced up to my feet.

I caught the towel as it slipped from under my arms. My lips twisted in irritation at having to use it. But I wasn't going to give Grumpy any more of a reason to grump at me.

A sheet of paper on the nicely made bed drew my eye. HOLLEN: I've gone to work. I've left my phone number on the pad in the kitchen. Please call me when you wake up. THANE.

I smiled at my misspelled name and gave the man a pass. It was an odd name, and he'd done the best he could. I wasn't sure what a phone was. And did he expect me to yell at him? If he was already at work, and I didn't know where he did that, I could potentially be yelling for hours before I found him.

Near the bottom of the page, in scribbles I had a hard time deciphering, it said: Clothes on the chair by the shower. Enjoy the rain.

A huge smile pulled over my face as I ran to the bathroom. Dropping the blanket, I made sure to keep the towel so I could use it when I was done. I stuttered to a halt when I saw the handle of the faucet, my heartrate picking up a bit.

"You did it last night. You can do it this morning, you big baby," I muttered to myself. I examined my fingernails again. Not a single hint of black. Maybe it was just the metal at the Oaks that I was allergic to? I shrugged as I spied the clothes Thane had left me. I put my towel on top of them and danced into the water room. The shower, I reminded myself.

First, I turned the knob to make the water fall from the ceiling. Then I turned the handle to get the temperature just right before I stepped into its sultry torrent. A moan purled from my lips as the water sluiced over me. I would go splash in mud puddles if it meant I could stand here ten times a day.

A hard knock interrupted my bliss. "Hollyn?" one of the men called.

I almost fell over, I jumped so high. "Y-yes?"

"It's Tove. Thane called, wanted me to check on you."

I laughed as my heart unstuck itself from my ribcage. Then his words dawned on me. "Wait! Don't leave." I slapped at the handles and knobs. Darted out of the shower and ripped the door open. "How do you call him? How did he call me? I didn't hear anyone yelling."

I made sure to stay in the bathroom so I didn't get Thane's floor fabric all wet. That could get stinky fast, and I wasn't going to be an ungracious guest.

Tove was just staring at me. Well, my body at least. I don't think he'd looked up to my face yet.

"Tove? Up here." I reached out and lifted his chin with my wet fingers. "My boobies can't talk to you."

He chuckled. It sounded a little strange. "Are you sure? Pretty sure they wanted me to lick them."

I laughed even as I heard a faint yelling. "Oh. Is that Thane calling me?" I reached down to the chair, grabbed the towel and wrapped it around me, up to the armpits. These boys were weird. "Why can I barely hear him? If I didn't know he was calling out for me, I wouldn't be able to hear him at all."

"THANE! I'M IN THE BATHROOM!" I yelled out towards the living room. At least, I think that's what Thane had called it.

Tove burst into laughter. He shoved a small black rectangle at me. "Here. Hold this up to your ear. Thane is calling you on the phone." He helped guide the phone up to my head.

"HOLLEN! I'M HERE!" Thane's voice yelled from the little device before I got it all the way up to my ear.

"HI, THANE. GOOD MORNING!"

Tove fell over, he was laughing so hard. Tears streaked down his cheeks as he held his belly.

I nudged him with my foot. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Hollen. You don't have to yell anymore," Thane answered.

My eyes widened. "It sounds as if you're standing right next to me. And I was talking to Tove. He's crying on the floor."

"Is he bleeding or otherwise in danger of dying immediately?" Thane asked.

I looked his replica-dang it, brother-over. "No. Not that I can tell."

"Then he's fine. Let him get it out of his system. How are you doing?"

I smiled. "Very well, thank you. Greetings and morning salutations, Thane."

"Good morning, Stretch. Did you sleep all right?"

I nodded.

Thane was quiet for a second. Then, "You need to speak, honey. I can't see you."

"Oh. How odd. Yes, I did sleep all right. Thank you for your hospitality. Did you sleep well?"

"I did. Do you remember last night? When I frightened you?"

I nodded. "Yes. You were very kind to me." I bit my lip. I needed him to forget everything I'd said. If they found out that I'd told anyone else what happened there, I could get these nice men in a lot of trouble. I shuddered as the results of the last person to leave slid through my head in sickly waves of fear. Maybe I should leave. I didn't want to repay Thane and his rep-brothers back with angry zealots.

"Can you discuss what happened?" Thane asked, pulling my attention back to the present.

"I can, but I won't. It's better for everyone."

"Everyone who, Hollen?"

"Oh. It's spelled with a Y not an E." I ignored his question.

"I'll make a note of that. And it's a very pretty name. Everyone who, Hollyn?"

I curled my fingers into a fist. "I can't tell you that either. Maybe I need to go. I don't want to get you guys in trouble. They say I'm a magnet for trouble. Which I don't really understand, but since everyone said it all the time, I guess it must be true. You know how sometimes other people can see things about you, but you can't see them? No matter how hard you try?" I nodded. I should go. "Could I borrow those clothes you gave me? When I find some new ones, I could give them back to you. I'm not sure when that will be, though. Would that be okay?"

"Hollyn, take a breath," Thane said in a strong, calm voice.

I inhaled noisily, my lungs burning in relief. "You really are a god. How did you know I needed to breathe? Are you sure you can't see me?" I turned in small circles, looking for the man who saw too much. I narrowed my eyes. "Are you hiding in your closet?"

"Hollyn," he said.

"Yes, Thane?"

"Stop searching for me. I'm at my office. About five miles away. Tove is the only one in the house. It's his day off."

"Day off of what? Does he go crazy on his off day? Do I need to be prepared? I can defend myself. Not always really well. Sometimes it comes and goes, but I defended myself against Grumpy. I could do it again." I shook my free hand. Hoped like the stars that I could produce Elektra again. That was the only spell I'd been able to master, and it had taken me close to thirty years. None of the other spells I'd memorized did anything. Ever.

Tove climbed to his feet, his expression somber. "I won't hurt you, Hollyn. I promise." He laid his hand over his heart like Thane had. "Day off means that I don't have to go into work. That's all. Like a small break every week."

My eyes widened. "But what happens to the work? Does it stop?" I would've loved to have had a small break from my work back in the Oaks. Sometimes, they wouldn't let me go relieve myself because there was so much work to do.

Tove shook his head. "It's there for me when I get back. Is Thane still on the line?" He pointed to the device next to my ear. "The phone line."

Oh. "I knew that." I nodded.

Thane chuckled in my ear, giving away my lie.

I narrowed my eyes.

Tove reached out for the phone. "Can I talk to him again, please?"

I handed him the phone. "Yes, of course. HAVE A GOOD DAY, THANE. I'M GOING TO GO GET BACK IN THE SHOWER."

Tove's face flushed red as he bit his lip. "For the love of your stars, keep the towel on until you close the door. I'm begging you."

I felt my shoulders sag. These men had serious hang-ups about nudity. It was probably good that I was leaving. Hopefully not everyone would feel the same way in Triport.

"She's not leaving, I don't care what you say," I said as soon as the bathroom door closed."I agree with you. But we need to get her acclimated to living in our world. People are going to notice if we take her out in public. And we can't keep her locked in our apartment."But, damn, wouldn't that be fun, though? "Mind out of the gutter, Tove. We need her to trust us. Wherever she's from, some bad shit must have gone down. She freaked out last night when I went into my room. Like melting into the wallpaper, freaked out." I could hear the growl in his voice. The underlying edge of violence that crept up anytime a woman or child was in danger. I pushed the resulting memories away. We all dealt with what happened in different ways. "What have you gotten from her so far?" I asked. "I can start doing some digging.""Apparently her name is spelled with a Y, not an E. I would start there. I can't imagine there are too many Hollyn's running around the world. Also, start looking

"Pick up your damn phone, Tag," I muttered as I struggled not to race for the elevator. One of the owners of one of the biggest telecommunication firms in the world does not run around the office like he's a chicken with his head cut off. Even if he feels like his heart is being ripped from his chest. I could almost hear my mother's voice whispering in my head. Now my heart really did feel like it was being ripped from my chest. I slapped at the elevator button and tried Tag's phone again. He wasn't the head of our security for nothing. "Call me immediately," I growled down the line when his voicemail picked up again. I called Tove. He answered on the first ring. "Okay, I hacked the building's security. She somehow made it out the front doors. She's wearing boxers and a black wife-beater. Where the fuck did she get that get-up? Anyway, she headed east towards the offices. Not more than twenty-five minutes ago."The elevator was moving as slow as molasses on a winter's day.

The pounding in my head was what woke me. That and the blinding light. It felt like someone had snuck under my eyelids, doused them in alcohol, and lit them on fire. I blinked until I could see shapes. Kept blinking until colors came into sharp relief. After the last round of blinking, Thane was there. His handsome face worried and pinched at the corners of his mouth and eyes. I blinked again. No. That couldn't be right. His eyes were fully fire? But that didn't make any sense. "Hollyn." I saw his lips move, even heard his voice. But it wasn't him. Or even one of his brothers. "Hollyn, it's me, Thane." I shook my head. "No, it isn't. My Thane only has a little bit of fire in his eyes. Yours are all fire." I shrank back in the lumpy bed. Tried to cover my eyes with my hands. Tried to make the nightmare go away. Something yanked on my arm. I gasped, wrenched away. Or tried to. Whatever it was had been sunk beneath my skin. And little lines of black were branching out in

"Who can find us?" I asked as I walked through the door of her hospital room. "And why are you whispering?" The small bouquet of flowers I held caught Hollyn's gaze. A huge smile stretched her mouth. "Are those for me?"I shook my head. "No. They're for Thane." I shot her a sad smile, handed the little bunch of stems to my brother. "Here." Her smile wilted like flowers left in the sun too long without water. I immediately felt like a jerk. "I was kidding. Yes, they're for you." I extended my arm. She shook her head. "No. If they're not for me, then you shouldn't give me your brother's present." Her eyes were wide and her gaze was open and honest. Now I just didn't know what to do with myself. I looked around the room awkwardly. Prayed for a roaming nurse to come save me from myself. A small snort had me turning to look at Hollyn. Her bottom lip was caught between her teeth as her chest bucked. "Give him a break, Stretch. He's probably going to start crying," Thane s

We stood across the street from the hospital waiting for a car that Thane's assistant was bringing by. The mad dash through the emergency room had been interesting. Thane and Tove growled at everyone who tried to talk to me as they squeezed me between them. Once we got outside, the feel of the sunshine on my head and face had me itching to take my clothes off. Not that they weren't lightweight, but they just felt off. Like they were tamping down something inside me that needed to be free. That needed pure air and unfiltered access to the sun. I backed up until I could stand on the little patch of grass near the sidewalk. The dirt rose between my toes soothing the ragged edges inside me. I pulled that peaceful energy up into my body and thanked it for its healing presence. As I opened my eyes, a shiny black car pulled up to the curb. A man got out from behind the driver's wheel. For some reason he looked familiar. His dark blonde hair and his light blue eyes. I could have sworn

I looked over the woman's shoulder. Raised one eyebrow. "Come again?" He couldn't have said what I thought he just said.He repeated it. Word for fucking word. Damn it. I shook my head. "No. No. There's no such thing as magic. Not like that anyways." I looked at my brothers. They shook their heads slightly. Well, shit biscuits. Why the hell didn't you tell me you hadn't told either of them that we're magical? I snarled mentally. And when would this auspicious conversation have taken place exactly? Thane raised a single eyebrow. Hollyn was staring at me as if she could see into my head. Read my thoughts. Scan my memories. Hear my waking nightmares. I dropped her hand and stepped back. "You won't get me to believe in anything like that."Hollyn's mouth twitched up at the corner. "Would you like to make a bet on that?" She lifted her hand out to me again. I scowled at her. Snagged her smaller hand in mine. "Hit me with your best shot." My grin was a little savage.

"By the stars, please let this work," I muttered as I fell to the ground next to Tagan. Guilt wracked my body. I knew I shouldn't have let him pull on my magic. Magic does nothing but cause pain and sorrow. "Stella vulnere remedium," I chanted over and over as I tried to pull even more magic from my body. Barely a trickle of magic crossed between us. I shook my hands out, prayed to the gods I hated, and laid my palms back on Tagan's raw and bloody back. "Stella vulnere remedium." This time I shouted it. Brilliant light shot from my hands into his body as his ribcage shuddered under my fingers. "Come on. Come on.""You have no right sharing your magic with him. With any of these men," Matt said as he grabbed a fistful of my hair. He wrenched my head back, a knife in his hand. "Your magic belongs to us. The Faithful. We have served and served, all to no avail. The gods have deserted us. And now, you-the Deserter-are wasting your powers on these bastards? No. Not while I'm here

"What the fuck is happening, Hollyn?" I shouted at her as her body swayed. Tagan's body was a bloody broken mess on our living room floor. The woman who'd crashed into my life had her hands lit up like spotlights against his wound. And neither of them fucking said an eternal damned word. I was about to go insane. The heat and rage of seeing one of my brothers wounded right in front of my eyes was scorching through my body, consuming everything in its path. Belly-weakening fear rolled over my mind. I couldn't lose him. Not either of them. I'd already lost too much. We all had. I reached out, touched Hollyn's shoulder. Her eyes were closed, her lips were moving, but I couldn't make out anything that sounded close to English. As soon as I touched her, she toppled over to the side. "Fuck, Thane," Tove said as he pulled her head into his lap. He wiped at the cut over her right eyebrow. Smeared his fingers under her nose where more blood was slowly oozing down to her mouth. Eleven Months Later"Give me my babies, Grumpy. I carried them. I get to hold them." I held out my arms. My tired and noodley arms. I didn't care if I could barely hold them up. I was going to snuggle with my three girls until we all fell asleep anyways. He slid the one wrapped in purple into my arms. "So bossy, cheeks." He kissed my sweaty brow. "I love it. But I'm still the boss." My daughter's blonde hair and dark purple eyes were a startling combination. Her dusky skin made her even more exotic looking. I blew a raspberry at him. "That's what you think. We've got you outnumbered now."Tove carried over the little girl snuggled in pink. "Yes, you do. We're all going to be wrapped around your fingers. Hell, I already am and I have no problem admitting it." With her citrine eyes and black hair, she was just as pretty as her sister. Thane smiled. He laid the little bundle of yellow on my chest. One month laterI looked at the little computer screen. Squinted. When that didn't help, I rubbed my eyes. Blinked. Looked at the screen again. "Are you sure?" I asked. The nice dragon smiled at me. "Very sure, my lady."I grimaced at the name. But no matter how many times I told people not to call me that, they continued to do so anyways. I shook my head. "I still don't believe you.""Cheeks, you're pregnant. You can't tell me all the crazy mood swings and eating us out of house and home has been lost on you," Grumpy snapped at me. His face was basically plastered to the little screen. I glared at the back of his head. "If that's so, maybe I should go live with Drace and Finn. They won't bitch at me."He turned with a snarl. "Try it and see what happens."The dragon healer chuckled, the sound a little uncomfortable. "Perhaps we could all calm down. New mothers, especially dragon carriers, need to be calm and happy." I raised my eyebrows in victory at Grumpy. "Yeah. No m

"Where is she? Where's my granddaughter? Hollyn, he was lying. He was lying, baby!" Ari raced up. Tears and fear soaked her voice. "I would never do that. Not ever. You're mine. Just as your mother was mine. I don't trade one for the other. I'd never do that." I looked up at Tove, his blue green eyes smiling down at me. "Think I should talk to her?"He nodded. "You know you want to. I can tell." He gave me a cheeky wink. I narrowed my eyes at him. "Watch it, mister."He smacked his lips to mine. "You just smashed Merlin into light particles. I'm pretty sure you can handle a discussion with your Grams."I smiled hugely. I had smashed Merlin into light particles. His bitchass was no more. My eyes widened. "Shit!" I pushed Tove off me. "We've got to get out of here. Merlin's gone. The Valley could collapse at any second."Ari crushed me into her body. "He was lying. He was lying. I swear to you he was lying." I still rushed forward. I would do whatever was necessary to help her win this. To get her back. To bring her home. Literally blind, I plowed into someone. She gave a hoarse oomph as we smashed to the ground and rolled. "Batman," she whispered. Then she settled her lips on mine. Two more heavy bodies crushed down on us. She inhaled sharply. "Can't...breathe."With a grunt, I forced myself to my hands and knees. Made a cage of protection over her. My brothers rolled off to the sides. "Sorry!" Tag said as he popped back up."Damnit, Tag," Thane snarled. "You good, sweet girl?" I whispered. She nodded. "As long as you're all here, I'm better than good."Soon, she was in our arms in another Hollyn burrito.

I saw his smug stupid face as he smiled up at me.He raised a hand. The energy crackled like pale pink lightning in his palm. His lips moved. The stores of my magic that had been topped off with Chaos' boost bubbled and writhed as I filled them with starshine. There were no longer any stars in my bright Autumn sky. None. Save for one. The sun. Using a thread of Chaos' magic, I linked up to the shining orb that rested high above our globe's heavens. The power shivered and danced through me. An unbreakable link that let me see far beyond what my eyes were capable of. The hint of pink shot from Merlin's hand, straight at me. I steadied myself. Prayed that my magic would hold me true. That I wasn't going to be the reason everyone in my life, in this fucking Valley, died. Just as the spinning, crackling sphere of pure energy neared me, it burst into a rainbow of motes. I hurtled towards the earth and an idea began to form. I had no idea if it would work, but I was out

As we raced up the final small hill, I saw her dart down from her spot in the sky. We thrust through the line of Wardens as she angled herself like an arrow at the man who had caused all of this. She was with Grumpy. They were both wearing the clothes we'd arrived in. The backdrop of the picture showed the hollowed out remains of the Village. Body and pieces of creatures dotted the ground."She's gone. You said yourself that she was gone. Cheeks told us." Grumpy squeezed her arm. Ari's gaze darted over his shoulder, back to his face. Her blue eyes were wide, scared. She shook her head. "You don't understand.""NO!" I screamed and thrashed against his hold. My heart stuttered in my chest. "No!" She was just like everyone else.
