The drafting table was finished. But there was a problem. It was too big to fit in Ryder's room.
"Didn't you measure it beforehand?" Henry asked his daughter while she stared at the drafting table in disappointment. He was changing the light bulb, tripping over his own foot, and then he even dared to say he wasn't clumsy.
Ryder frowned, the furrow between her eyebrows deepening. "I followed the measurements in the blueprints."
"Well, we can always just sell it. A friend of mine was planning on buying one. How about I ask him if he's interested in buying it?"
It was a nice opportunity, but Ryder wanted to keep the drafting table for herself. She had worked hard on it and spent so many hours creating something from scratch... it hurt to part from it. Still, it would be sad to just keep it in the garage and never use it. In the end, Ryder sadly nodded. "I think I will fix my current desk into a somewhat drafting table."
Henry chuckled at his daughter. His eyes wandered at the junk around the backyard, his hands resting on his hips. "Why don't you sell the things you do online? You can even take orders... it's a nice way of saving money."
Ryder considered it for a moment. She made a lot of things, most of them just for the sake of the "making" process than the end result. A lot of the things just gathered dust and nothing more. Selling them online wasn't a bad idea. "Mhm." Ryder smiled.
"Okay then... clean the backyard first."
The smile disappeared with no trace. C-clean then backyard? "Dad...."
"You don't have school tomorrow, and you also need to sort out the things that can be sold. So clean the backyard. Your mother gets depression every time she sees it." Without giving his daughter any change of objection, Henry walked inside the house, firmly closed the door with a grin on his face as if he had achieved something to be praised for, and rushed to his wife to collect his praises.
Ryder looked around at the backyard and then at the time on her phone screen. It's already eight pm. How could she clean this whole place alone? For sure, her parents wouldn't help her, because they believed in "you made it, you clean it up" and they always went to bed at ten o'clock since they had to wake up early to go to work in the morning. She was left alone with her mess.
Damn it. Should have invited Jasmine to sleep over. That way she would have forced her into helping.
With no way out of this, Ryder started to clean. To avoid any possible encounter with a random demon or ghost, she played music on her phone, this time just sweet melodies of a piano or violin. With her current state, with trauma from the movie still lingering in her heart, the usual rock or rhythmic music wouldn't be much of a help, so classical music it is.
While she was picking up some wood pieces from near the fence, humming along with the melody, a voice sounded from above. Now there are a lot of things to be taken into consideration. First of all, it was late at night, the sky was as dark as it could be, there was no moon, and if not including the piano music lingering in the air, the place would be dead silent. Secondly, the girl was still thinking about the horror movie. Casually imagining scenes that made her body shiver. On top of that, out of nowhere, a male voice spoke to her right above her head.
Needless to say, Ryder almost had a heart attack. And so her response to "You changed the light bulb." was a scream mixed with a cry as she fell on the ground trembling like a beaten kitten.
"What the fuck is wrong with you?!" She roared in a hushed tone so her parents wouldn't listen, even though the possibility of that was pretty low. Once those two fell asleep, unless it were an earthquake or fire, they wouldn't wake up. And their bedroom was on the other side of the house, the farthest from the backyard. "You scared me to death."
Angrily she threw one of the pieces of wood to the fence before standing up.
The young man, like last night, was wearing a dark hoodie. It covered half of his face and all Ryder could see, be there a working light bulb or not, was just a fair-skinned chin and two pink lips like two soft petals of a rose.
"You really like to be mysterious, don't you?" Ryder glared at the hoodie. She walked a few steps back from the fence to keep a safe distance from the stranger and then spoke again. "Why did you come back again?"
The young man placed an arm over the fence and rested his chin on the crook of it, a faint soft smile hanging on his lips. "I bought ice cream while I was passing by and thought to share it with you."
He probably hit his head somewhere. Mhm. That's it. He's damaged in the head. Who did he think Ryder was? A four-year-old kid that could be tricked with ice cream?
"You finished it?" The stranger flicked his chin slightly, gesturing at the drafting table.
Ryder glanced at her just finished project and nodded. "Yeah. I'm going to sell it." She bent down and picked the wood pieces, going on with her cleaning. Maybe if she ignored him, he would leave. But even after ten or so minutes of ignoring him, with the only thing breaking the silence being the melody of the piano playing, the young man didn't leave. He actually looked as if he was enjoying looking at her working, that soft smile still on his lips.
After a while, Ryder couldn't take it anymore. "Why aren't you leaving?"
"I like the atmosphere here."
Ryder snorted, picking up the heavy Medusa head that had fallen a few hours ago. "What is there to like?"
"It's quite romantic."
The cognac eyes of Ryder widened, almost popping off her skull as the Medusa's head fell from her hands, almost breaking her foot. This was the second time she almost hurt her feet because of this guy. Frustration mixed with embarrassment bobbled up as she scorned him. "Stop talking nonsense."
She rushed to her phone to stop the music as her cheeks reddened.
On the other hand, the young man took off the lid of the ice cream tube and merrily dug a plastic spoon in it. "Are you sure you don't want some?" He asked Ryder when he noticed she was glaring at him. The already red cheeks turned scarlet. Ryder looked away without responding to him. "What a pity... I bought it for you."
"Why would you do that?"
Under the dark hoodie, the ears of the stranger turned red. "I felt like it." Ryder frowned, but before she could say anything else, the young man hurried to change the topic. "Do you only make tables?"
Ryder shook her head and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "I do whatever I feel like doing."
"For example?"
"Drawing, painting, sculpting, wood carving, have tried making stuffed animals... a lot of things... but I'm not very good at it."
"Jack of all trades, master of none." The young man chuckled.
The corners of her lips lifted. "Something like that."
The eyes of the strangers softened under the hoodie as he bit the tip of his thumb "Have you tried writing?"
Ryder didn't answer right away. She straightened her back and stared blankly at the dark sky for a moment, thinking about it. She had written essays. Tons of them. For some reason, teachers love those. She had tried writing poetry but the results were so embarrassing Ryder refused to admit something like that came out of her mind and was written by her hand. As for stories... there was one time when she had tried writing a short story... again, the end product wasn't satisfactory enough.
"I have, but I prefer reading more." Suddenly she remembered something. "What you said last night... Sometimes tears can ease the pain in one's heart... Where is it from? I know I have read them, but I don't remember in which book."
The stranger hid his mouth behind the crook of his arm and stared at the girl in front of him. The corner of his lips twitched. He thought of answering, considered lying... in the end he just kept his lips sealed.
Seeing that he wasn't responding, Ryder snorted again. What's so fun in acting so mysterious? "How old are you?"
"Young enough."
Tired from cleaning and talking, Ryder sat on the ground, her legs crossed as she pulled blades of grass that were already in a miserable state even without Ryder attacking it like that. "Are you still running away from life?"
The heart in the young man's chest suddenly felt heavy. With a voice that didn't reach Ryder, he muttered at himself. "More like hiding from it."
The question was too personal and Ryder knew he wouldn't answer anyway. "Are you going to show up again?"
The young man was taken aback by such a question. On the other hand, Ryder thought it was a very reasonable thing to ask. He had come three nights in a row, always showing up at the same time, at midnight, and for what? To talk? Is this guy so lonely that only Ryder is willing to talk to him? That is so sad...
"I don't know..." The young man answered.
Hearing that, suddenly Ryder felt like she was losing something. Were three nights enough for her to get used to this kind of situation? Isn't that a bit stupid coming from her?
"I think you shouldn't."
The eyes of the stranger were like a storm, covered in the dark clouds of a raining sky. To hide the frown from the girl sitting cross-legged on the ground, he bit his lower lip. "Why?"
"Because I don't know you. You won't show me your face, tell me your name, or even where you know me from. You might not be dangerous with bad intentions, but it still makes me feel uneasy."
The stranger chewed on his lower lip for a bit, and hiding the desperation in his tone, he asked. "What if I give you another hint?"
Ryder widened her eyes, not expecting the stranger to say something like that. She was convinced that keeping his identity a secret was really important to him since he has refused to give any proper hints to her. Ryder didn't expect for the guy to offer hints as soon as she tried to shoo him away.
"And why would you do that?" Ryder narrowed her eyes at the guy whose face was covered by the hood. "You want to come again?"
The stranger hesitated a bit, then shyly nodded. Ryder was bewildered, even a bit scared, but she couldn't sense any danger or ill intent coming from the young man.
"Why?"
A sigh flurried past his pink lips and the stranger bit the tip of his thumb again. "I like talking to you."
"I..."
"We have never talked to each other before... it's... it's nice."
"I still don't know your name though. It feels a bit weird for me."
"Then how about you give me a name?"
This dude must really be lonely and desperate for friends. Such a pity that he came to seek friendship from a hermit like me. His voice sounded two parts hopeful three parts desperate. Ryder felt a bit helpless against that voice.
"Wouldn't that be weird for you?"
"I don't mind. People have called me a lot of names before." The stranger said as if it was nothing, casually shrugging it off, but Ryder instantly felt bad for the guy. He must get bullied a lot.
Without even noticing it, Ryder had started to think of names for the stranger. The young man looked at her pinching her lower lip as she thought and smiled a bit.
She should just name him after some book character, but after thinking about it a bit more, Ryder felt like naming him like that might sound like I'm bullying him. And so she gave up on the idea. But thinking about random names felt weird, so Ryder tried to come up with a nickname. After pondering over it for a few minutes, with the eyes of the young man on her, waiting patiently, Ryder finally spoke. "Can I call you Midnight then?"
The young man's lips twitched in displeasure upon hearing that name, but as he noticed Ryder beaming proudly like a little child, he didn't have the heart to refuse. "Why not."
"Great then..." Ryder stood up from the ground and patted her clothes in a poor attempt to dust off the grass and dirt from them. "Give me the hint."
Midnight chuckled. "Hmm... I already gave you one."
What? When? "No, you didn't."
"I did. I told you that we haven't talked before."
The answer angered Ryder whose face turned red and her cheeks puffed. "What the hell am I supposed to do with this half-assed information?" Her arms crossed over her chest. "Give me a proper hint or don't bother showing up again. I will call the police."
Midnight smiled. "Okay, okay... hmmm... let me think about it... What if I tell you my height?"
"No. I can find that out myself."
How... Midnight was at a loss of words. How could she find out herself? "And how do you plan on doing that?"
A smirk lit up Ryder's features. "You're not standing on your tip toes, or you would have gotten tired after a while and tried to rest for a bit. However, except for shifting your weight from one foot to the other, your height has been the same all this time. All I have to do is measure the height of the fence, approximately add the size of a head to that number and ta da~, I have a rough estimate of your height."
Midnight was speechless. He hadn't thought that this girl would go to such lengths... he truly didn't know how to react to that proud smirk of hers or her way of thinking.
"Tell me your eye color."
"No."
"Hair color?"
"No."
"You're being unreasonable."
"... hmmm... I'm handsome?"
Never before had Ryder felt so frustrated and annoyed by someone that she wanted to throw hands, clearly, this was a result of not having siblings. It was foolish of her to think that this young man would be willing to give any proper hint about his identity. He was just fooling around with her.
Irritated, Ryder picked up her phone from her working table and walked to the back door of her house to leave. Seeing that she had had enough, Midnight panicked. "I have a mole on my right hand."
Ryder stopped walking and slowly turned around. One of her feet was inside the house, one outside, her hand on the handle as the door was slightly pushed open. "Elaborate." She narrowed her eyes at him.
Under the hood, Midnight blushed. How long has it been since he had felt his face heat up like this? It felt like centuries. Suddenly, feeling awkward, he scratched the back of his neck. "It's on my thumb and it's very small..."
He anxiously stared at the cold and collected expression on Ryder's face. It still wasn't good enough? His hands were sweaty for some reason and he had started biting on his lower lip again. It felt like a long time before Ryder finally nodded.
"This will do." She waved at him with a small smile on her lips, gentle and soft... Midnight's cheeks turned a darker shade of red than before. "Good night then."
"Does this mean I can come tomorrow?"
Coming every night... won't this guy get tired? Even I can't stay in the backyard every night... However... tomorrow would be Saturday. She would have a lot of free time and besides, if he came again, she could fish out some other hint from him.
"Yeah... but you have to come after ten o'clock and leave before midnight." That way her parents would be asleep and she wouldn't have to stay out in the backyard the whole night.
"Is this... Is this why you decided to call me Midnight?" The young man asked bewildered. Did this girl really name him after the time of the night she would kick him off her house?
"All of the three times, you showed up at midnight. That's why." As soon as she explained, Ryder walked inside the house and locked the door behind her.

Ryder: Poor guy must get bullied a lotMidnight: .....? What? No, I...Ryder: He must be so lonelyMidnight: .....???Midnight: Actually I...Ryder: He probably has no friends *sighs*Midnight: .......?????!!!!!Midnight: I give up (oT-T)尸It was early in the morning. Actually, no, it was late at noon, but for Ryder, this was called early on Saturdays. The heavy dark curtains of her room were pulled closed, not a single ray of sunshine broke through. The bedroom was in total darkness. That is until the screen of the phone suddenly lighted up and furiously vibrated.Brrr... Brrrrrr... Brrrrrrrrrrrrr...Why do you hate me so much?Groaning in annoyance and with her eyes still closed, Ryder answered the phone. "UGH... Hungh... Hmmm." Which roughly translated into: what do you want, leave me alone."How are you still sleeping?" Jasmine sounded too energetic for Ryder who hadn't fully woken up yet. "Meet me at the café in front of the school in an hour.""I don't wanna go." Ryder sleepy answered. She had planned on sleeping until four in the afternoon and maybe... MAYBE... start a new project or just watch some anime. She didn't make any plans for today so she can't just... unexpectedly make plans out of nowhere. Where will
After that sentence, Remy's face looked as if it had been smeared with red paint and for some reason, he got so angry, that he kicked both girls out of his shop and threatened them to don't come again.Ryder didn't pay much attention to this reaction, while Jasmine was pouting, looking almost as if she was about to cry."You can't say such things so normally. He probably feels embarrassed."They were going back to Ryder's house, walking down the streets side by side, Jasmine leaning her head on Ryder's shoulder. She must have gotten worn out from all the fighting.Jasmine shook her head. "His pretty face... bruised..."Ryder rolled her eyes. Of course, this idiot would turn an ear deaf to any words of rejection. "What are you going to do about those guys? They will definitely come back again" It would be troublesome if they tried to pick a fight with Jasmine and her as well. "We probably angered them more. What if made it worse?"Jasmine shook her hand, not bothered at all. For such a
The next day, Midnight didn't show up. Ryder just couldn't understand why she felt disappointed. Did she really want him to come by? Her thoughts were already in chaos, overthinking about that weird urge to protect a man she didn't know anything about that woke up last night. Why would she harbor such feelings? Ryder wanted to know why but didn't know where to search for the answer. On the other hand, Jasmine had her own thoughts about this guy that wanted her precious daughter's attention. After Ryder saw Midnight off that Saturday night, Jasmine was waiting for her in her room. Acting as if the room was hers, she had sat right in the middle of the bed, her legs crossed, her elbows resting on her knees and her right hand holding her chin. When Ryder walked inside the room, a chill ran down her spine, feeling like she had just walked into an interrogation room.Jasmine didn't say anything as her eyes studied carefully the expression on Ryder's face. The fair skin of Ryder had turned r
Aiden clearly underestimated Ryder's capability of being as boring as a rock resting under the sun when she shopped. He truly felt like his brain would boil from boredom as the girl kept staring at two vases of flowers that looked pretty much the same to Aiden. What is there to think so much about? Just pick one already!!!When the two met after school, Aiden was beaming with confidence. Jasmine was nowhere to be seen, apparently, something had come up with Remy. Aiden didn't care that much, but he was starting to think that maybe this whole "adaptation" thing could be very profitable for his side. At least he could have Ryder all for himself and not worry for Jasmine butting her way in between them like an overprotective dog that would bite him every moment now. Little did Aiden know that Jasmine had let Ryder go alone with him thinking that no matter how all this thing with Aiden ended, it could be a learning experience for Ryder. She still would avenge Ryder if he so much as hurt h
The more time passed, the more steps she took, the more Ryder's irritation turned into pure rage, mostly directed at herself. Why didn't she run after him? Why didn't she stay closer to the door? He was so close God damn it. They were in the same place, during the day, and she couldn't steal even a glimpse at him. Ryder was furious. What up with this shitty luck? And that worker... why didn't she say anything, but played dumb? Like hell, you don't know. The guy shows up every now and then and you don't know anything about him? Who are you trying to fool? When Henry saw his daughter stomp her way into the house, he was almost scared to talk to her. That scary look in her eyes made him feel like he was looking at a grenade re
Midnight left before midnight... =_= There was nothing to do in the backyard now that he was gone, so Ryder went up to her room. Only then did she realize how tired she was. This day had been so long and it had exhausted her physically and mentally. The bed felt like a bliss descended from heaven, yet as Ryder lay down, sighing in pleasure, the phone in her pocket rang. There was no need to check who it was, for who else but Jasmine would call her at this time? Ryder threw the blanket over her body and only then did she answer the phone. "What's up?" There were a lot of noises coming from Jasmine's side. She must be somewhere crowded. Ryder could barely listen to Jasmine as she answered. "I have good news and bad news." She sounded cheerful, but her tone was somewhat strained. Noticing this, Ryder who was just starting to drift into sleep, opened her eyes, sleep flying out of the window. "Did something happen?" "Mhm," Jasmine said, the voice barely heard as it blended with the no
Since Jasmine had made it a habit to spurt out random information about Remy, it wasn't that hard to find him. But there was no way things would go as smoothly as Jasmine had imagined. Ryder had no idea how to start small talks, and Remy had no desire to be around anyone. This resulted in Ryder just watching Remy from afar, feeling like a creep, and couldn't help but sigh inwardly. Whenever it was possible, Ryder would mutter a hi at Remy, who would just nod once before going in his merry way.Remy didn't have any bad impression of Ryder. Actually, he didn't have any impression at all since he had met her just twice. All he knew was that this girl had some sense in her brain and would help him escape Jasmine's claws. As for what happened that Saturday, he didn't know what to think of it. At least Ryder didn't throw punches at random.Still, for both of them, it was a bit weird to just suddenly start a conversation. What would they even talk about?Ryder felt depressed. She was doing th
After school, Ryder decided to give the "Wooden Lord" bookstore a visit for interrogation reasons. Since she was alone, with Jasmine absent for the day, as soon as the last period ended, Ryder put on her headphones and made her way out of school. There was no one other than Jasmine who would take the initiative to talk to her, so she turned up the volume to the maximum, with no worry that someone would call her out and she wouldn't hear. This idiot, of course, totally forgot about Aiden.Aiden had been in a horrible mood since lunch. Even Greg who would never let any chance to tease him didn't dare to talk to him. Who knew if Aiden suddenly snapped and things took a bloody turn? He better not risk it.When the bell rang for the ending of the last period, Aiden had rushed to Ryder. Today the damned chihuahua was nowhere to be seen. Why was he getting so mercilessly ignored? Aiden had figured out by now that Ryder was somewhat dense when it came to feelings. She failed to notice his flir
Those three words shocked Michelle stiff. During this whole month, the drama queen's role was occupied by Henry who would wail and complain the whole time for getting his daughter stolen by a brat. However, Michelle was rather calm. Isn't it just a boyfriend? Yet only now did she realize the situation was quite serious. Where did this love come from? Wasn't it just a simple crush? What love??? No, no, no. Nobody talked about love! This is serious. Her daughter really got stolen right in front of her eyes! Unacceptable!!!!! The corner of her lips twitched. Michelle lost all desire to cook. She didn't even want to see Jake anymore. She needed time to digest all this. Wait a minute.... Does this mean she is going to meet her future son-in-law? BUT I'M TOO YOUNG TO BE A GRANDMA! And so when Henry came back, the pair of husband and wife looked as if they were facing a calamity. Who knew Ryder better than them? That damned girl didn't even make friends that easily. If she said she loved Ja
Five minutes later, Ryder was breathing heavily, her face as red as it could get. She wanted to glare at Jake but couldn't for she also felt rather shy after that kiss... Let's say... a few sounds she had never done before came out of her and now she wanted to bury herself somewhere. On the other hand, Jake had his mood improved, and turned to his painting as if nothing happened. "That wasn't the revenge I was talking about by the way." The low pitch and somehow hoarse voice sent shivers down her spine. "Jerk," Ryder muttered at him, touching her lips. Jake only smiled even more and kept painting. "Humph!" Ryder scoffed and sat back on the bed. Trying to ignore the intense blush on her face, she brought Jake's laptop on her lap. "Can I use your laptop?" "Yeah." Ryder opened the screen of it and frowned for a second. It seemed that the last time Jake had used it, he was writing something, for the first thing that appeared once the screen turned on was a document on Microsoft Word.
After Aiden went home that afternoon, what awaited him was a pissed-off father, with hands resting on his hips and a rather fierce look in his eyes. Mathew scolded Aiden for five hours straight, his voice not even going hoarse from all the talking, but Aiden's ears had gone numb and felt like they would bleed if he listened to his father's vicious scolding even for one more minute. His head was boiling from all that speech to the point he even felt like fainting, but all Aiden could do, was sit and patiently listen with his head lowered, bearing with this humiliating state. This happened four weeks ago. After that long ass scolding, Aiden didn't dare to say half a bad word to Jake, but that didn't stop him from glaring at his brother and Ryder every time he saw the two of them. As the days passed, the glares softened a bit, but the atmosphere between the three of them was anything but good. Still, Ryder didn't care at all. Ever since she and Jake became a pair, the unrestricted Mathe
Before he left in the morning, Ryder finally got his phone number. Because of some certain grudges from the past she also wanted Jake to give her his email and any other social media he was on, only to remember that she wasn't on any social media herself. In the end, she could only add him on WhatsApp. He had promised to pick her up from school, so the two of them could go out for a walk."Why are you smiling like a fool?" Jasmine asked her."Huh? What?" Ryder put her phone back in her coat pocket."Why were you smiling at the phone like a fool?" Jasmine repeated, her dark eyes narrowing at Ryder. Only now did she notice that this friend of hers looked kind of strange today. Her eyes were way too... sparkling... And her cheeks were a rosy red... and her smile was a bit too bright...WHAT THE FUCK!WHAT HAPPENED YESTERDAY?!!!Jasmine turned around, looking around the classroom. As her eyes fell on Aiden, she felt both relieved and disappointed at the same time. In the end, she clicked
"Did you go out in the garden? There were footprints on the snow." Henry asked before stuffing almost half of the toast that was in front of him in his mouth. Michelle looked at his vile way of eating as if he had been starved and clicked her tongue. Her upper lip curled up and her nose drew up and wrinkled as she shook her head, yet she still put more toasts in front of her husband. Gotta feed him well."I did," Ryder answered slowly, not sure if it was the right answer or not. There was no way her father had seen Jake sneaking out of her room, right? He would have grabbed his homemade sword and chased after him. Right?"Oh. Why?""I wanted to play with snow."Henry looked at his daughter as if she had grown a second head. Facing such a gaze, Ryder smiled foolishly. "It has been so long since I last saw snow...""Oh..." Henry said again. He didn't ponder over it too much though, as Michelle stuffed what was left from his toast in his mouth."Eat more, speak less."Having been fed by
As the kiss landed on his hair, Jake realized that Ryder had kissed him twice on the lips yesterday. He had been so immersed in his worries and fear, in that rollercoaster of emotions that he let such an important thing slide.Closing his eyes, Jake hesitantly asked. "Ry.""Mm.""Did you tell me... that you like me?"In just one second all the sleepiness vanished, and now Ryder was fully awake. Awake and blushing. Yet she still tried to remain calm, her eyes closed as if the fast heartbeat wasn't betraying her at all. "I did."If it weren't for the fact that Jake could hear her heart beating faster, he would have thought she was either sleepily admitting it or she was just that cool about her feelings. The corner of his lips lifted and an unexplainable joy warmed his body from inside, spreading from his fast-beating heart to every inch of his being."I like you too."Ryder smiled. "Mhmm. I know.""Can I be your boyfriend then? I promise I will be good and will never hurt you."Ryder c
Jake pouted. His arms wrapped tightly around Ryder's waist as a strange urge to bite into her neck overwhelmed him. "Don't make fun of me. It was embarrassing."Ryder chuckled twice, her shoulders shaking slightly. "I thought it was cute." The grip around her waist tightened even more. For a second she stopped and put herself in Jake's shoes and sighed. It truly must have been too embarrassing for him. That was the first time they met in broad daylight with no hoodies or whatever to cover his face. It was the first time they met in such a close range face to face and what happened? He was half naked looking like a kindergarten child's drawing. And he was spurting nonsense.Ryder bit the inside of her cheek and her face flushed red. He has a good body.... However, she did not dare to say that at loud. Instead, her lips pressed lightly against his cheek. "Let's go inside. It's too cold out here. You will catch a cold."Jake nodded once and stood up from the ground. Even though the air a
Soft and hesitant footsteps sounded from behind the fence. The warm cognac eyes looked away from the cold snow and fell at a certain someone who was walking towards the fence. She saw Midnight approaching the fence with hesitant steps before jumping over it. He stopped to look up at the window of her room. The light was left on, but he was biting his lip, nervously standing in front of the fence for a few minutes, not daring to go any closer.Midnight hadn't noticed Ryder in the swing seat. He was battling himself, not knowing if he should go to her room or just leave. His cold hands were trembling slightly and his lip hurt from all the biting, yet he didn't want to stay and didn't want to leave. In the end, Midnight simply remained frozen in place.Seeing him not having any intentions of coming to meet her, Ryder could only smile sadly. She raised her knees to her chest and wrapped her arms around them, before speaking. "Aren't you going to see me tonight?"The voice was low and tend
After Ryder came back home, she was completely in a daze. What happened back in Aiden's house had left her muddled. Even though she didn't show it back then, or on the way home, for she was that kind of person who would be able to calmly react to unexpected situations, like the night she first met Midnight proves, after everything was over and she was far away from the said situation, Ryder felt like her head would explode. She opened the front door slowly as if she had no power left, which almost scared Henry shitless. The strong reactions her father had seemed to have brought her back to reality and Ryder stared at her worried parents. During her whole life, there were times when she would feel lucky to have them but never had she felt it as strongly as now."I'm okay. I'm just tired." Ryder sighed and went upstairs to her room after giving both Henry and Michelle a warm smile that instead of putting them at ease, worried them to death. Once Ryder was in her room, Henry turned to his
